I was 14 when this album came out. My brother was the one who brought the music home. He would play random songs from AiC, STP, Pearl Jam, NIN all day long. I would sleep with this music playing during the day, and it would find its way into my dreams. I'm now 2 months away from 38, my brother served 12 years in the Air Force and passed away in 2014, mother died of a broken heart 2 days after valentines day in 2017 and every time I hear music of that time, of those years, I feel that any moment, I'm going to wake up from this nightmare of a life. I might be in the minority here but jar of flies is my favorite album! I love that more stripped down, acoustic approach. Loved the older, heavy crunchy stuff too, don't get me wrong! but I just love jar of flies so much, and of course their MTV unplugged show... I still respect the hell out of Jerry Cantrell for continuing on, and he is in my opinion LARGELY overlooked and underrated as a musician, a singer, and a songwriter.. I respect him for keeping on, and that new singer is very talented, breathes new life into the band.. but damn it all I wish Layne would have gotten help, got his shit together, and LIVED!! kept making music... I didn't get into Alice in Chains until somewhat recently, as an adult. I was a kid in the early 90s. I remember something my dad said about when Kurt Cobain died. My dad was old school, not much of a rocker, more into old country like Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and what not. Well when he saw nirvana's unplugged, Kurt's rendition of "in the pines" he was extremely impressed. And that's when he realized like okay this dude's legit. It's not just yelling and screaming and noise lol nirvana's unplugged made a believer out of my dad because he immediately recognized the artistry, the musicianship involved... He said something after Kurt died about damn just imagine how much great music he COULD have kept making, had he lived. My dad thought they might have CONTINUED that unplugged stripped down approach.. Well anyhow, talking about nirvana on an Alice in Chains video! Sorry lol I said all that to say THIS though: The way my dad felt about Kurt is kinda how I feel about Layne; I feel like if Layne had lived and they continued the band, Layne probably would have made more stuff similar to unplugged and jar of flies... Sad what happened to both those guys, RIP kurt and layne both ✌️✌️✌️

I was 16 in 1994 when this released and what a perfect age to be musically conscious. My dad played the old motown stuff, being raised on the classics like zeppelin, Jethro tull, Nazareth, the Beatles and stones, the who and having classic rock and motown on the radio growing up, then coming into my own music consciousness with Metallica, pantera, all those 80's bands and even the great voices of people like Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson on the radio, then BAM, the grunge movement out of Seattle hits and changes my life forever. Not to mention the Golden age of hip hop and RnB with 2pac, biggie and all the rest. I fear we may never see artists of today hit that kind of vein that bands like Alice in Chains did. But I'm happy i was a part of all this greatness. And I'll always be able to go back and listen with gratitude for what a profoundly inspired zenith of musical creativity it was.

Jerry Cantrell!! 99% of the time when a rock group uses professional classical musicians for a recording (as AIC did for this song), everything has to be written out precisely for those musicians. Jerry gathered the musicians in a room with him and his acoustic guitar and played for them exactly what he wanted. And they'd work on it together. No sheet music or anything else. And the results are a testament to his ability.
@ryand1413 жыл бұрын
That's interesting. I'm telling you. The best musicians have been self-taught and have not been able to read music. I could name some: Hendrix, Gilmour, Yorke, to name a few. Ear training is far more valuable imo.

@@ryand141 exactly. My grandfather was the same. Musically he had an eidetic memory. He played the piano as good as any clasaical pianist, could barely read sheet music and never took a formal lesson. He would listen to a song a few times and would play it brilliantly.

One of my favorites from my youth. I'm in my 50's now and the grunge era was in my early twenties. Those who didn't experience this time, and yes those who are young need to understand this music was a response to the eighties. Nothing against the eighties but it was about style not substance. To understand that statement you would have to live in that time, regardless of what you hear the 80s and early 90s was a great time to live. Period. This music from 90s time was the second coming of the 70s, meaning it was the song writer not the look. That changed when he shot himself. The moment he died the next thing I saw was boy bands.

early 90's was still glam metal, Firehouse was selling millions and Mr. Big's "To be with you" was the biggest single of 1992. So it really 1993-1996 that grunge was hegemonic. Looking back everyone says this or that in 1990 ended hair metal, but thats just a mistake looking back in hindsight. You look at pop culture in early 1992 and it wasn't that different from 1989.

Looking back to those days, it seems like AIC barely put anything out. But since rediscovering them on KZbin, all these songs I forgot about are popping up and I'm like "Yeah!" Plus, as strange as it might sound, I'm discovering songs from Facelift that I never heard back in the day. Besides "Man in the Box", I only really knew AIC from Dirt onwards. It's kinda like when Nevermind broke and not buying Bleach until a few years later. Anyway, I really miss those days. It was our version of Beatlemania. It's hard to even describe in words what it was like to put on the NEW Nirvana album or Pearl Jam album or AIC album for the first time. It almost gives me chills thinking about it now. I'm so glad I have these memories.

I worked at Sam Goody back when the Grunge music , Pearl Jam , Alice In Chains was huge. It was kind of neat working there.

Never in my 24 years has it happened to me that I can't stop playing songs from a band, there are never enough times. I love Alice in Chains too much. Layne is so missed, no one like him. 💔🇦🇷🤟

Try out Deftones :) and Radiohead’s OK Computer and In Rainbow. I think you’d like them. Hope you’re still rocking AIC . My favourite is this one, Sludge Factory MTV unplugged & Rooster on MTV unplugged. Wishing you well and may many tunes find your ears :)
