The Layne rip-offs drove us insane in high school during the late 90's early 00's. Godsmack is literally an AiC song. The word "away" was just abused with no feeling behind it. Layne did it right, Kurt did it right. In my opinion

All of my friends and I hated Godsmack so much. We'd see these kids a few years younger than us wearing their tshirts and be like "look at that f%@king poser!" AIC is one of the reasons I started to play guitar almost 30 years ago. Layne was one of a kind and probably the most talented rock vocalist of my lifetime. I wish he was still with us today.

The name Godsmack was a literally rip off of an AIC song. It wasn't just ripping their shit, it was trying to emulate them in the most cloned fashion. It's no wonder true Alice In Chains fans shunned Godsmack. Also, good point, when it was done right, it wasn't forced copied or tried. Aesop Rock said it best; Isn't it funny how it's a fad to bite your idols, When the whole reason you liked them, Is because they're shit wasn't recycled.

For me, and I've heard them all, Alice in Chains was the greatest band to come out of the Seattle/Grunge era. Bands like Mother Love Bone, Alice in Chains, Green River and even Soundgarden (among others) were the first bands to break out. Pearl Jam I will always cut a pass because because they were born from Mother Love Bone. And, Nirvana made history by taking the scene worldwide, and many bands that followed, bands like Bush, Oasis, Candlebox and tons of others, owe Nirvana a tremendous debt for opening many doors. Still, above it all, I believe that Alice in Chains will always be the greatest band to ever get on any stage.

Facelift was a killer debut album. I only first heard of Alice in Chains through pro wrestling (Tommy Dreamer's entrance theme was Man in the Box), and by that time Layne had already become a recluse. Looking back, Facelift sounded like nothing else that was being recorded in 1990 and it set the stage for what was to come.

*_I_* didn't...back in the day, back when grunge first came out. And all the 'wanna be' bands that sounded just like him drove me absolutely crazy (I still cannot STAND Pearl Jam). It was only years later when I really started listening to their music, and studying their songs and lyrics, did I come to truly appreciate the amazing uniqueness of Layne's voice, and the equally unique harmonies he had with Jerry. Layne's command over his vocals and his voice were unlike anyone else EVER, and anyone trying to copy that fell short...with a thud. AIC is now one of my all time favorite bands, and Layne is probably my all time favorite singer. But it took me awhile to discover this!

While 'Facelift' is easily their most sonically "accessible" album, 'Dirt' has massive versatility as well, & hits deeper with certain cuts. Tbh, 'Dirt' - 'Dog' AIC was them at their creative peak, but also most depressing. You definitely can't play any post-'92 AIC at a party 😅

I'm rereading David de Sola's book and watching your AIC videos and every time I think, "Yup, that's what I read too." No shade, its good to see AIC spread as far and wide as possible. Facelift will always be my favorite AIC record. It was literally the first CD I bought ever - when CDs were a brand new thing. The 2nd CD I ever bought was Dr. Dre's The Chronic. I was in eigth grade. Still listen to them both on a regular basis. What I want to know is where is the good music of the past 15 years though?

@@Banana_Split_Cream_Buns Fuck yeah. I'd love to see that. I'll look into it. Certainly sounds interesting. As a drummer I really relate to your comment about the local audience and scene being a huge factor. In the early 2000s I was living in Miami and joined a band I saw and liked. I just walked up after a show and said "I like what you guys are doing but you need a better drummer wink wink." We were doing stuff in a vein of The Strokes/Interpol/Oasis. I loved all the great rock from 60s to the 90s. I considered myself, even back then, a guy who knew exactly what to play to not only help create but also bring out the best in a song. The guitar player (who reminded me of The Edge and Eddie Van Halen combined) was a really talented dude and shared the same musical influences as me, so we were easily able to crank out great songs. Our singer was more of a front man than a singer, but he wrote decent lyrics. We were well recieved. We were even voted best original local rock band two years in a row by readers of the local rag. But there just wasnt enough of that kind of music scene at that time, in that place. We never drew really large crowds. There was no momentum, we were just kinda doing our thing. Plus it was at that weird time when the internet was starting to take over but not quite there yet. So when we sent our demo off to the labels and didnt hear anything back that caused a good deal of frustration. After maybe three years together we just kind of imploded. Sad story but great memories and I still enjoy the music we created.

What do you mean Layne's voice was wrong?! Layne Staley's vocal range can run rings around any other grunge singer (including Chris Cornell) in MY OPINION. Layne could sing the phone book and never hit a wrong note. Even at the end of his life, with no teeth and a lisp, his voice, wit and humor were all still there. Layne's voice and vocal range was so powerful he did NOT need auto tune or pro-tools until he lost his teeth and had a lisp around 1998, and even then he still killed the vocals. As much as I think Layne sang better than Chris Cornell. Chris Cornell said that Layne sang like an angry angel. Barrett Martin (who played with Layne in Mad Season) said that when he stood to the side of the stage, he could hear the sound of Layne vocal resonance come out of Layne's chest LOUDER than it did coming out of the speakers, Layne's voice was that powerful.

I really hate the “grunge” label that gets put on these early 90s bands. If there were a band that really personified that term though it was AiC. The sludgy guitars, dark lyrics, ambient rhythm section, and of course, Staley’s haunting vocals. I love this band. Their 3 albums, 2 EPs, and Unplugged were my life’s soundtrack when I was 15.

Absolutely agree, Andrew Hale, about that despicable term. I've always called it "Northwest Folk Punk." I know, a lot of syllables but to my mind, more descriptive. We had the Folklife Festival which was free and volunteer run and touched everyone's life growing up in Seattle. To me the 'folk' part was the high quality of songwriting in the songs, the craftsmanship both musically and in storytelling. And the punk part, well that was the edge; it was how the audience was encouraged to participate. Most people from outside who only experienced our local music in recordings forget --or don't know-- about that part, that it was a sort of participatory rock experience. Getting my nose broken in a mosh at a Mudhoney show sucked at the time but I can also wear this true story like a badge of honor. It speaks of the importance we placed on getting involved, not just standing around. To me 'punk' is also more collaborative than rock, more inclusive, on every level. I was always proud of how collaborative the Seattle musician scene was in the 80's and 90's rather than what you might find in a competitive scene like L.A. Musicians that found success pulled their compadres up with them rather than cutting the competition down in some sort of ego way. And lastly, to me, 'punk' is progressive; it's self-aware; and it's worldly.

If you want to know just how weird of a place the guys were in come the Dirt sessions, read up on the things Layne had in the vocal booth with him. Occasionally stopping to go pick up that sweet black tar in the middle of the LA Riots, and then continue tracking with pickled fetuses and snuff visuals taped on the wall. It's such a beautiful thing to be where they were recording Facelift and with Jerden's/Butt Nugget's support. Two years makes quite a difference.

To me seem's like almost everybody has been doing a bad Layne imitation-When I heard "Man in the Box" I instantly knew the greatness there.Just like when I heard "Hands All Over" the year before I knew That SOUNDGARDEN was destined to rule the World.No disrespect to the other Seattle bands which some I love but SOUNDGARDEN & AIC were Worldbeater's & bigger then what would be termed as GRUNDGE.The thing also with Soundgarden is there music was variety-filled that they were uncatergorizable-where by BADMOTORFINGER & SUPERUNKOWN could reach the masses yet never compromised musically...
@liquidbraino
@liquidbraino 2 жыл бұрын
Holy shit... hands all over... I lost my fucking mind the first time I heard that song. I wouldn't say that Soundgarden were uncategorizable though, not like King's X which was definitely hard to pin down - to such a degree that it damaged their career & they didn't get as much radio play as the bands which they later inspired. Soundgarden can be categorized as a straight forward hard rock band because of their obvious influences - Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Neil Young, Jimmy Hendrix, the Beatles. They just put all of that those influences together in a way nobody had heard before and it was the variety of influences and the way they combined those influences that made their sound so unique. I also remember the first time I heard the song "Black Hole Sun" I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing. I was sitting outside the Richland mall in Waco Texas waiting for the bus; had made a long trip to the mall just to but that album. The song came on just before the bus pulled up and I IMMEDIATELY recognized the Beatles influence in it - I thought "Wow, this is WAY different than anything else they did before it". I thought "this is like the Beatles but on LSD" and then I thought "oh wait... the Beatles WERE on LSD"! They even wrote a song about it "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds". Listen to that song - then listen to "Black Hole Sun". Black Hole Sun is like a darker version of Lucy in The Sky with Diamonds.

Facelift is a metal album. It's a really good metal album, but it's a lot closer to Warrant than Nirvana. AiC started as a metal band, and when grunge broke, the recorded a grunge album. Btw, the Melvin's did drop D before AiC, and buzz credits "some metal kid" with showing him the trick. The whole purpose was to keep the better tone of playing in e flat, without having to carry another guitar for the tuning. Let me know if you need more info for your channel.....

Can you please tell me what is the name of the stock track playing at 00:52 ... I've heard it elsewhere, and I really like it! It would be great to sing over for me. Cheers for all these well-done, poppy videos. Nice work :) "LiL'JpD."

I realize AIC is fat better than Creed, but I totally blame AIC for spawning that stupid chunky guitar deep voice vocal shit from the early 00’s.

I'm from Boston and I hate Sully. Guy totally ripped off a classic aic song that could've and should've been a single. But the drug use references killed that. I won't lie I listened to Godsmack in late teens early 20s when nu metal crap took the reigns after an early exit of grunge. Grunge should've lasted longer. I'm still in my flannel aic shirt loose jeans crappy shoes. Scruffy face and long blue hair at 41. Seattle music shaped who I am today. I have other musical inspirations. But AIC Soundgarden nirvana and Stone Temple Pilots with Scott changed me from a boy to a teen to a young man. The thing I love about aic is only true fans of Aic and mad season know how special Layne Staley is. He's not just a musician or singer. Guys an angel who's saved my life many times. So many times I wanted to just push that huge shot in my arm. But I'd put on nutshell, down in a hole, put you down, hate to feel. And so many other songs. It makes me wanna give it another chance so I shoot half the shot and that still makes me see death almost. So a full shot is suicide. I don't wanna die. But I think about it so much

First saw them open for megadeth at hammersmith odeon UK. Had never heard of them or any of their music. Halfway through the first chorus of their opening number( man in a box) we all left our newly purchased beers on the bar and went running into the hall........hooked from then on

@7:13 Bands that ripoff Laynes singing style.... Ummm yea, GODSMACK!!!! I thought it was an F'n Layne project at first. They even stole their nake from an AIC song! The lame story of "he had a cold sore and made fun of it... a few days later he had one. We called it a God smack" Surrrrreee guys! I really believe that one. You sound like AIC, don't wanna say u ripped the name off plus the taboo that would be around the band admitting that got the name from the AIC song would have a huge drug tie in for the band.

For a plethora of reasons, Facelift* is an🤭 exactly that brilliant at exactly that era in time. ✨ 🌙 ♓️ 🌊 ♌️ 🔥♈️ 🔥♊️🤷🏻‍♀️🌙✨ The stars aligned, and magic was made. p.s. My very favorite AIC song will forever be ‘Love, Hate, Love.’ For Layne and Jerry, I thank the Rock ‘n Roll gods & our Father God in heaven. No one has ever before sounded like Alice In Chains, and no one ever again will. 😢😭💔🖤❤️🖤❤️🖤

Facelift is good but uneven. I do think Dirt was a better album, and definitely the pinnacle of the Layne Staley years. I actually find their newer stuff quite excellent and I hope people don’t turn away from it just because Layne isn’t there anymore.

As someone who grew up in the area and has recorded at London Bridge, I wouldn't say it's in the middle of the woods. In 1990 when AIC and others recorded there, mail sent there would have been addressed to Seattle, as the city of Shoreline hadn't incorporated yet. Not that there's any shortage of trees out there.
