According to legend (and there's no way to know if it's true because he has too much class to ever try taking credit for), Jerry Cantrell wrote that bassline and taught it to Mike Starr. I believe it's in David De Sola's AIC biography where this is revealed. It was either one of the producers, engineers, or studio techs who worked with them on 'Would' said Mike Starr had a rough idea for it originally, but it didn't have the same oomph, bounce, or movement in it until Jerry took it over and improved upon it and taught it back to Mike in return. Mike didn't have a problem with Jerry doing this because he was becoming increasingly distracted around this time. This was also when the band first started having issues with Mike Starr because he seemed to care more about banging every woman he saw (Mike Starr was a pin-up model and hunk during the Grunge era), and was now beginning to show up to the studio exhausted, unprepared, and lacking a clear mind. The band didn't know it was heroin he was using yet, they just knew it was *something.* Something was affecting his mental clarity. Mike ultimately conceded that, yes, his bass line could be better. So he turned to Jerry and sought his input. Regardless, it's hard to say how much of it is truly Mike's bassline versus Jerry's. The producer was only sowing the seeds in reader's minds for why Mike Starr would be dismissed from the band the next year. He wasn't trying to trash him or anything. He was just giving readers the backstory for what was to come with Mike.

There’s plenty of it, but it ain’t on the radio. A few modern alt bands I’ve been listening to over the last couple of years: Helms Alee, Kowloon Walled City, Grails. The Melvins invented grunge when they were already 5 years old and they haven’t slowed down for a second in 40 years. I believe Mastodon is the best band of the last 30 years. They’ve also toured with AIC a few times and play Friedman amps. Torche is another good one. Relapse Records’ roster is a good place to start finding good heavy music.

Was she living on her own? Did she start using while under your watch? , what age was she when she started using? Sorry for your loss but I’m curious. I have a 10 yr old and I’m already getting her up to date on what drugs do to people especially women. No way she gets near coke or heroin or even pills as long as I can draw air. God , school and family that’s what I’m teaching her right now. I told her there is a time for everything and knowing the time to graduate school, date for at least two years and then marry and start a family (without breaking that order) is the key to a happy life. Wish you a quick recovery from your loss and God bless

Not really true. Cornell matched him in his own way, but as far as someone sounding just like Staley, look up the song "Seasons" by Chout. That's the closest I've heard anyone sound like Staley, and it's a near 95% or so match. Then look up Brendan Maier (the vocalist from that band) on KZbin as well. Also look up "Sober" by Skorned. Same vocalist.

As a vocalist singing for 30 years i can hit the notes and grittiness of the vocals while singing this song, but it is so so fucking taxing. Layne was effortlessly good and insanely talented, his vocal chops are rare as hell with how easy he makes it sound. Also to be able to sing like this you need to be balls to the wall LOUD as hell even without mics and p.a. systems, I bet he pissed off a lot of neighbors in his time haha. RIP Layne you were one of a kind and an inspiration🙏

Went to the one in Ohio. I really can’t recall who went on before Alice but this storm rolled in so the band left the stage. Everyone went to seek shelter, the wind came whipping in, it was very dark and ominous. The moment was not lost on Alice. They came out, right when the sky opened up and came out playing Rain When I Die. I knew, at 16 that this is a moment you will never forget and I never have. I attended many many concerts, including the Blind Melon one at St Andrews where the girl jumped off the roof but, 93 lollapalooza remains my favorite.
