Great video. I've found that a couple of Woodland Sustainment pouches can extend your range if you're going out for more than a couple days. They'll clip nicely to the side of an ALICE pack.

In addition to keeping everything protected from rain, another good reason to use a waterproof bag to store all items in (albeit not very applicable to civilians) during waterborne operations the pack will float! Adding additional closed-cell foam (sleeping mat) to the hip pad, frame and shoulder straps will provide additional comfort (eventhough ALICE packs are not very comfortable) this will help with heavier loads. Tip: Use carabiners to hook gloves, extra rope etc to the outside of the pack (carabiners are also very useful for shelter building, etc.).

I have no problem with cutting out the radio pouch, my issue is cutting the adjustment out of the straps. If you use the the strap keepers properly you still have adjustment options. Go to the end of your strap and fold 1.5 in to 2 in keep folding until you are by the buckle end then slide the elastic strap keeper up over the folded bundle, the loose straps are controlled and your adjustment is still available. Shoulder straps just tuck the excess into the frame pocket of the pack body and its still available when you need to adjust for heavy winter clothing. Being in Alabama you really don' know real winter, come about 2500 miles north in January.

I watched your previous video on the Alice pack and stopped by the hardware store on the way home to get some 3/8 fuel line. I have almost everything I need now to get started. Thanks for today's video.

I'm 6'2" and had the same problem with the medium Alice pack. I am using the large now and it's much easier to distribute the weight.rerunning the straps around the pack frame as Blackie shows in a previous video helps a ton.

@@larryfoster2227 I have the medium also. After that experience I went with a real backpacking pack that was half the weight.

Enjoyed the video. You mentioned using a garbage bag for a pack liner. Personaly, I like contractor bags for that. Little heavier and a little bigger. That's what I carry to pot refuse in as well. As always, thanks for sharing.

I pack very similar to your set up. I also like water proof bags. I use different colors to indicate day one to how many days. Same goes for food, cooking in different marked bags. Rain gear rolled and put in bag vertically for easy access. (Weather reports are not reliable after first day) imo Only have one extra outer layer. Plenty of socks/underwear and base layers. Less is more, if you do not use a bag over the scheduled trip, you have to much. Water, water, water :-) Old Jarhead :-)

I use a heavy duty trash bag to line my medium Alice pack. I also attached a molle sleep system bag to bottom of pack to carry my sleeping bag, pillow, beanie, and extra socks I also line that bag with a trash bag. This allows more room in the main pack for equipment so it works well for me for winter camping.

Thanks Blackie. I have used an alice for hunt, but never in a camp pack setup. Always had trouble organizing the contents well. I would love to hear more about finding that inner liner sack. Otherwise I guess the trash bag or drum liner would be great. Due to weight and climbing limitations where I tend to hunt, I learned to cut back to a mid size to mini pack for comfort, and speed, relative to a less than overnight objective. (extra layers, food, water, light, drag rope...back up tarp, cordage, fire kit if ever needed, knife, first aid, pen, compass..) I had little idea about how to use the top cinch before as well. I have some practicing to do.

Thanks Blackie, great video and information. I've been experimenting with different pouches to add to the outside of the pack to make more room on the inside of the pack like sustainment pouches, saw pouches and a first-aid kit pouch. That's one thing I need is a lightweight down sleeping bag though. That's been holding me back. Also I would be bringing a lightweight 2 - person tent instead of a hammock. Appreciate you doing another video on the Alice. Out of the many, many Alice pack videos I've watched, I think you are only the 3rd one that showed how you pack it! Have a great weekend. 👍👍
