I use the metal cups from Walmart. I use a measuring cup and add 1/2 cup of water and mark it with a magic marker. I do the same for 1 cup, 1 1/2 cups and 2 cups. I use the round cut off wheel on my Dremel and lightly make a mark where the increments are then wipe out the original marker. It's easy to see inside the silver cup. Nice videos! Thanks!

This was an outstanding tutorial on how to upgrade an alice pack! I have set up quite a few of these and I have carried them many miles over the years. They are a timeless classic and still a good pack to own. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and suggestions on this brother.

Char cloth is best made w/ 100% cotton. I use old shoeshine cans to make my char cloth (1 w/ small hole in the top and placed on the coals of a fire until it stops smoking out the hole, and another to store the finished char cloth in.). Great vid!

i will keep my cheap ( not in price) nylon tent as i can zip it up the keep the blood suckers out. if i am cold in my bag i just wrap all up in my wool blanket. but at 65 i do not do much tent camping any longer. but i do have two or three of them out in the garage. i like the bed in my rv best. but YES keep ALL sources of heat AWAY from nylon tents, even your cigarets. there was this seen in the movie omen.. or was it omen two? been a very long time. might volute utubs rules so will not say more, but if you know the part it gets the point across.

Old Charcloth will also become less and less able to ignite carbonized cotton. I find using Punk wood instead of jeans as char-material.

The ring in the chimney cap is for pulling the chimney assembly up and off the top rim of the globe in order to provide clearance for tipping the globe open. The assembly is spring loaded and will lower itself back onto the globe rim when you let it down. The wire bail is for general hanging. I recommand parrafin based fuel for indoor use. It smells less than kerosene, does not soot as bad, and produces less CO2. You still must ventilate for oxygen. If you like the smell of jet fuel in your gear, use kerosene. But NEVER use kerosene in one of those old Coleman catalytic heaters - EVER. If you have one that you got from a garage sale, put it an enclosed space like the back of a truck with a CO2 detector. Burn it over night. Toss it if it fails. It means that someone burned kerosene in it and destroyed the catalytic material, which is asbestos. These old design lanterns probably burned down a barn or a cabin or two back in the day, but if you obey the rules there is minmal danger of a fire outside the globe. They are windproof, they are pretty stable on a flat surface, and don't get so hot that a touch of fabric will light off without at least a minute of contact to the chimney parts - which do get hot enough to hurt. A dry paper towel took one minute to begin turning just a hint of color when I tested it directly against the hot chimney vents. I've used mine many times in camp and in the tent and truck canopy - not for heat, but for just enough light. Heating a tent or canopy with a lantern takes a long time. my method is a single burner propane bottle-top stove, which heats the place while making my morning coffee before I roll out. An accessory for a lantern might be something Coleman made a long time ago: A metal can that fits over the top and adds thermal mass beyond the lantern sheet metal's ability to produce.

I keep a small silica moisture absorber in my char tin. I think flint and steel works as easy as bowdrill or anything else short of a lighter. I can find plentiful chert around here and made my striker from an old file.

I use an altoids tin to make char and char cloth and keep it in a small zip-lock bag to keep it dry. When I was a Boy Scout I earned my fire making merit badge and how to use flint and steel over 60 years ago. I used a carbon steel boy scout pocket knife to strike the flint. Old Boy Scout Handbooks and Boy's Life Magazines taught us a wealth of outdoor skills back then. Some times you can find them in second hand bookstores.

Good tutorial. I think half the reason guys carried a pistol was to start their fire and why you look at late 19th century and early 20th century guys always carried matches. Best flint and steel today is a lighter. 😛

Blackie, Great Video on Flint and Steel information, How To. I am wanting to know about Light Gray Flint color we have a lot of it just North of Paris, Tennessee in West Tennessee . My mother in law grandmother farm just down the road from where I live on my farm . There is a place where light gray Flint is everywhere ,lots of arrowhead points, scraper , spear points lots of chips. I don't have access to the land anymore. But I do have several pieces left . God Bless Y'all You and Mrs. Blackie and Family.

Amadou [ horsehoof fungus ] off of birch trees , boiled in a solution of water and birch wood ash [ lye ] for an hour , and then pounded and flattened ; once dry , is a tinder superior to char cloth , its coal is hot and tends to burn longer than the char cloth . Amadou comes off of trees in nature and was free for the taking unlike cotton or linen cloth . Rotting wood that has become spongy [ punk wood ] and can be squished between your fingers and springs back when you let go , also makes great char in your tin ; as well as cattail tops when it's still tight and brown , excellent for the char tin . All these are free for the taking and work just as well or even better than char cloth

we have a fungus here that grows on birch but is not tinderfungus but will catch a spark and does not require it to be dried and cured first
@DanielBelliveau-y5x
@DanielBelliveau-y5x Күн бұрын
@@BLACKIETHOMAS Here we have Chaga and horsehoof fungus both on our birch trees , they'll both take a spark without complicated processing ; but if you process the horsehoof fungus as described it enhances its ease of catching the spark because it's been flattened out and has absorbed the lye ; it takes on a suede like leather consistency and you simply ruff up the surface with a sharp piece of flint and cast your sparks into it and get an easy ember . It burns for longer and hotter with a thicker ember than char cloth , better for winter or damp conditions . I think this method was discovered by early Europeans or Asians pre-dating the Vikings , though they used it .

I took a leg off a worn out 100% cotton jeans material we got at Goodwill. Took one of those Pirouette cookie tins, the straw shaped thing? Trimmed off the hems etc, rolled it up good and shoved the whole thing in there. I mean it was a ROLL of heavy denim😂 Set it on the fire with a hole punched in the lid and cooked it till all the gas and everything off. Sat it off to cool, and I'm here to tell you it took a minute😂 That stuff was great, rip off a chunk, frayed carbon threads? BANG!

Hello Blackie. I've got the 3rd canteen pouch that you showed in this video, the one made from nylon from the late vietnam era. I use it for the nalgene canteen plus the stainless steel cup with lid. The lid fits if I stuff it vertically at the side in the pouch. My question is: Now that you have the Dave Canterbury canteen with its butterfly handle cup plus lid, does this system also fit in this US late Vietnam era pouch? Thank you and best my regards from Germany
