I was 14 when this album came out. My brother was the one who brought the music home. He would play random songs from AiC, STP, Pearl Jam, NIN all day long. I would sleep with this music playing during the day, and it would find its way into my dreams. I'm now 2 months away from 38, my brother served 12 years in the Air Force and passed away in 2014, mother died of a broken heart 2 days after valentines day in 2017 and every time I hear music of that time, of those years, I feel that any moment, I'm going to wake up from this nightmare of a life. To my brother and mom, still alive.

Bingo! I've always loved Jerry's playing, don't care if it's not super shred virtuouso style (Vai, Satriani) bcuz I feel it and it has emotion and weight, like Stevie's playing. I also think Adam Jones from Tool is underrated, people mention him even less than Cantrell , and his riffs and rhythm playing is second to no one. He's a a technical beast in complexity, but he's not a shredder so no one talks about him

I might be in the minority here but jar of flies is my favorite album! I love that more stripped down, acoustic approach. Loved the older, heavy crunchy stuff too, don't get me wrong! but I just love jar of flies so much, and of course their MTV unplugged show... I still respect the hell out of Jerry Cantrell for continuing on, and he is in my opinion LARGELY overlooked and underrated as a musician, a singer, and a songwriter.. I respect him for keeping on, and that new singer is very talented, breathes new life into the band.. but damn it all I wish Layne would have gotten help, got his shit together, and LIVED!! kept making music... I didn't get into Alice in Chains until somewhat recently, as an adult. I was a kid in the early 90s. I remember something my dad said about when Kurt Cobain died. My dad was old school, not much of a rocker, more into old country like Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and what not. Well when he saw nirvana's unplugged, Kurt's rendition of "in the pines" he was extremely impressed. And that's when he realized like okay this dude's legit. It's not just yelling and screaming and noise lol nirvana's unplugged made a believer out of my dad because he immediately recognized the artistry, the musicianship involved... He said something after Kurt died about damn just imagine how much great music he COULD have kept making, had he lived. My dad thought they might have CONTINUED that unplugged stripped down approach.. Well anyhow, talking about nirvana on an Alice in Chains video! Sorry lol I said all that to say THIS though: The way my dad felt about Kurt is kinda how I feel about Layne; I feel like if Layne had lived and they continued the band, Layne probably would have made more stuff similar to unplugged and jar of flies... Sad what happened to both those guys, RIP kurt and layne both ✌️✌️✌️

I was born in 1982 and it used to piss me off being told by younger people born say, 1988-94 that 90s music was sh*t because it glorified depression and suicide. Not to mention the fact that by the time these kids had the brain cells to develop a taste in music rock music consisted of nu/rap metal. I'm always glad to hear someone that appreciates 90s music. The experimentation, the dissonance, unpredictable chord changes, the wah pedal abuse, songs that were strongly riff based while still retaining depth and quality. It was great and I'm still discovering lesser-known 90s hard rock bands all the time

I was 24 years old and serving in the US Army in Germany when this album came out. After the huge success of "Dirt" this was a highly anticipated release and I ate it up. "I Stay Away" jumped out at me and grabbed my guts from the start, best track on the album. Off in Germany with no Mtv I never saw the video, just caught it for the first time at 50 years old, with a wife, two kids and a mortgage. Man, what a song. So soulful. Alice in Chains at their best.

Fun fact: the jar of flies is a representation of an experiment that is done with two jars of flies. One jar is overfed and the other is underfed; the overfed jar reproduces at an alarming rate and then overpopulates (creating shorter lifespans) while the underfed jar survives the longest. This music video and song embody everything about that experiment and the messaging behind stay away from the overindulgence and pressures from our social environments.

Jerry Cantrell!! 99% of the time when a rock group uses professional classical musicians for a recording (as AIC did for this song), everything has to be written out precisely for those musicians. Jerry gathered the musicians in a room with him and his acoustic guitar and played for them exactly what he wanted. And they'd work on it together. No sheet music or anything else. And the results are a testament to his ability.

I was 16 in 1994 when this released and what a perfect age to be musically conscious. My dad played the old motown stuff, being raised on the classics like zeppelin, Jethro tull, Nazareth, the Beatles and stones, the who and having classic rock and motown on the radio growing up, then coming into my own music consciousness with Metallica, pantera, all those 80's bands and even the great voices of people like Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson on the radio, then BAM, the grunge movement out of Seattle hits and changes my life forever. Not to mention the Golden age of hip hop and RnB with 2pac, biggie and all the rest. I fear we may never see artists of today hit that kind of vein that bands like Alice in Chains did. But I'm happy i was a part of all this greatness. And I'll always be able to go back and listen with gratitude for what a profoundly inspired zenith of musical creativity it was.

First of all: hi, I'm half-black and half-white, and Alice In Chains is one of my favorite bands, too. Second of all: the former lead singer of Killswitch Engage (Howard Jones) is black, too. I highly recommend them if you like Alice In Chains. 🤟 His voice is SO good. I recommend starting with the song "The End Of Heartache".

In 2017, it was a bad year in my life. My grandmother passed away along with my Ferret. Both within a few days of each other. This song was in my playlist back then. It takes me back to that sad time. It isn't the song that is bad. Just the time I was listening to it. Amazing the memories it triggers.

I know that somewhere else I've already commented on this song and band.. Just an amazing voice that was silenced way to soon.. Singer's like Lane stately.. I think that God doesn't want to spoil us or give us to many clues, to the wonderful sounds that will be surrounding us on an eternal basis Freddie Mercury would be another example, knowing that the voices are angelic.. An maybe to much of the greatness that awaits us all.. so, people won't want to leave to early..

It's unfortunate he's another one we didn't get to see grow old. Just imagine a Layne with graying hair and a bit of a receding hairline at a normal weight. I honestly could care less if he turned out to be preaching about Jesus when he wasn't singing if that would have kept him clean. Unfortunately he was a sad guy and paid a hefty price to bring him peace.

This is my favorite song ever. I wish I was born earlier then I was, to experience this music when it was still more popular, but none the less, I still love Alice in Chains, but this song in particular is my favorite. My mom would always put it on as I would dance around the house to it when I was younger. It will always be my favorite, and although I love artists from this generation, I will always love this type of music, because it was the music I grew up listening to. I just wish people my age listened to it more. I love all music from all different genres and artists', but Alice In Chains will always be my number one pick.

Fuck, same here. 1999 is too late. Thank god for my dad, who introduced me to this. Grunge, and just rock n' roll in general. Their songs just give me certain vibes, I just love it. The funny thing is my pops is going through the same shit right now that killed Staley, damn shame. The man had a voice of a fucking angel. I would recommend anybody to listen to AIC. But people nowadays just go with the trends, nothing original anymore. Personally, i like what sounds good to me, no need to go with some bullshit trends. People would judge me for liking this certain Genre, but i don't pay no mind. AIC will always be a favorite of mines.
