I just got back from Utah. I was also at Zion for a few days. I have been to Angels Landing 11 times over the years(including once in the winter). It is my favorite hike in the park. I did not do it this time as I was backpacking the West Rim Trail. It connects with the Angels Landing Trail at Scouts Lookout. I had on a full size backpack and there were hordes of people waiting to go up the chains, so I passed this time. The Angels Landing Trail is way overcrowded. I don't view it as dangerous if you use common sense.

@@mikekuhl2658 Wow good for you, i did see some people who had no fear. I cannot look down and see the drop offs and not be afraid. And I was constantly sliding towards the edge on the sand that covered the edge. If there hadn't been a line I knew I would have to battle I would have continued. The danger is in the overcrowding of this trail, it makes you rush or let go of the chains.

Canyonlands is a good one and very remote and a tad off the radar because everyone goes to Arches.

Thousands of people hike that trail every year. 13 have died in the last 12 years or so. The rate is very low. Very very very low. I just did it and there were hundreds of ppl on the trail. It’s a “not dangerous” hike.

Last time I did this hike with my daughter a woman fell to her death. Her body striking the valley floor sounded like thunder. Sorry for that graphic image but this trail requires all your attention to safety. When it’s crowded people try to be considerate on the chains.and let go to let people pass. Don’t do that! Reach around people and always keep at least one hand on the chain! Maybe go really early in the day to beat the crowds. The bravest thing to do is turn around if you aren’t feeling it. It’s a spectacular hike but not worth dying!

People fall off that place . We heard about that sound she made. It was a big bummer and we are still mourning. People come here with all these expectations. They have to "do" Angels landing or "do " the Narrows ". Then they can post something about how brave they are.

Hi Alice. New viewer here. I’m 66 and my wife just turned 65. We hiked to Scout Lookout 2 years ago, and decided we didn’t want to die that day going up to Angel’s Landing. So we made the intelligent decision not to go beyond Scout. We had a lovely lunch up there and as we got their by 11am, we watched tons of people hiking up after us and trying to decide whether or not to go up to Angel’s. 13 people have fallen to their deaths from the AL trail since 2000. I did not want to be #14. Two more fell last year. Dead. It’s a dangerous and deadly trail. If you slip and fall, your life is over, and some poor crew of people has to clean up your remains. So, that said, I am so proud of YOU for knowing your limits and turning back, when you felt uncomfortable to go on to the top. Way to go! And you live to see another sunrise! Point is, it is extremely crowded up there, and even if you make it to the top, early before the crowds arrive, you still have to pass them all on the way down. Life is precious and you and I are not infallible. So, thank you for this wonderful and responsible video! Hopefully others who watch this video, will also turn around on the hike if they feel uncomfortable or slightly off that day. In closing, you don’t need to prove to anyone that you are Wonder Woman. You are the precious daughter of your parents and the mere thought of you falling from up there would break their hearts forever. I’m so proud of you for having the common sense to turn around and not take that risk of falling, especially when you were not feeling right that morning. Great video. Please always use the same good judgement.

FEAR is the sidekick of CAUTION. I hope it is not inappropriate to mention this: I googled incidents at Zion National Park - there have been 13 deaths from falling off The Angel trail, 2 alone this year. So your instinct and the gutsy decision was the right one. Even before you decided to turn around and before your explanation why you did so, I was already flipping out from the dizzying height - and the trail looked so frightingly narrow. But another excellent video, Alice, and your honesty and tips are very welcome. Delete my comment about the deaths if it is inappropriate. Take Care

Thank you Joseph, the deaths on this trail need to be talked about not hidden. It is dangerous and with how many people are trying to hike it, it is getting even more dangerous. There are very few places to pass, and those needing to get down while so amy are going up makes it even more harrowing.

Last week we hiked angels landing, after reaching at scouts lookout we tried the chain section for initial 10-15 minutes and our shoes started sliding down due to sandy surface.. WE TURNED BACK! and enjoyed the view from scouts lookout! We followed our instincts.. there is nothing to loose even if you couldn’t make it to the top..🙂

I completed this hike when I was 54, and I remain grateful to the two young women who allowed me to trail behind them so that I wouldn't be completely alone. The chains section was the riskiest thing I've ever done. If there was a chain present, I had a death grip on it, and I was careful to maintain three points of contact whenever possible and to be mindful of my center of gravity with each step. I can honestly say that I was less apprehensive on the trail than I had been watching videos about it at home, but maybe that was the adrenaline rush. This trail is not for anyone with a fear of heights, but your reward at the end is an incredible 360 view of Zion Canyon.

The crowds are why I have a definite love/hate thing with the national parks. You either have to go during the best seasons, along with everyone and their uncle, or you get pushed to the margins and have to deal with challenging weather, closed access roads, and potentially dangerous conditions.

@@johnalden5821 You're right about that, but there are other ways as well For example, a couple years ago I hiked to Black Lake in the Rockies and wasn't long before the crowds were left far behind, all but a couple enduring hikers, due I suppose to the length, and the hike being just a bit difficult. Same with the Grand Canyon, rim-to-rim - lots of people hike down a ways, but not many do the entire trek. There's many trails in Glacier National Park where if you're up early enough to be catching webs in the face from spiders that built them across the trail at night, and the hike is long enough, there will also be some reprieve from the crowds who visit that park. All of those hikes and so many more are about the same - just do things, and go places, where the crowds don't so much.

I walked that trail several years ago with my son and his wife. It was really crowded, had to stop many times to let people pass. It is truly one of the most spectacular views you will ever witness. But if you have any fear of heights whatsoever, I suggest you stop at Scouts lookout. I wanted to turn around right where she did, but with my son's urging I continued to the top. It actually is quite open and a big area on top. I saw several people up there that had no business being up there. One younger girl never got off her butt with Terry cloth shorts on. Poor thing was scared to death. Do just as this one did if you have any trepidation along the way stop and turn around. At least one person a year falls off this hike to their death. I applaud your commentary on this hike. Thanks for all you let us see with you.

My hands are sweating watching this video! I opted out of this one a few years back because of foot pain and also a strong fear of heights. I opted to go to Hidden Canyon, which still had a gnarly drop at one section, but nothing like this. I hope to do this one of these days. Not sure I could handle the descent or the people who have absolutely no fear of heights who scramble around you and double the anxiety! Great job, Alice, and thanks for documenting the hike!

You did the right thing. I too have had to turn around on a trail that just became too dangerous. In fact, on two separate occasions this Spring I was on a snowshoe hike, and it just got too steep for me; more of a mountain climb than a hike. I was disappointed that I didn’t finish, but like you, I had no regrets about being out in nature taking in the amazing scenery.

Just did this hike today. The family and I are from Dayton, Oh (~900ft elevation), and we are NOT avid hikers. Made it all the way to the summit, and about as far out on the point as I really needed to go to feel satisfied we’d “done it.” It is not as dangerous as we were bracing ourselves for, but I think we were lagging others’ accounts build it up pretty high. The key is common sense, communication and cooperation. Yes there are some ascending while others are descending. When you get to a point where cooperation is needed, call out “How many are you?” Communicate and agree on which group should proceed first. If both groups are already “in the pipe”, cooperate and accept that you are going to be closer to strangers than your otherwise be comfortable with, and “hug around each other”, keeping ahold of the chains. Honestly, we saw far more near catastrophes due to carelessness and the FREAKING SAND than anything else. We are completely wrung out at this point, but there are no regrets and “10/10, would recommend”.

I really appreciate your share here. I went to Zion and was tempted to do the hike, but had reservations with safety considering how crowded the park has become. It's always good to take care of yourself and follow your intuition. Great example!

Thank you for posting your videos even when you don’t make it to the summit or final destination. Like you said it does not mean you don’t have a successful trip! The dangers are very real on these hikes. A lot of people think just because it is a national park and not permitted it is safe. A dangerous mentality. Thanks for posting this! Everyone has to know their safety zone. You can push or challenge yourself, but if you go past your point of feeling safe is when you can get hurt or worse. I know several people who have recently done the entire trail; while I admire their courage, after watching the video, I know the section past Scouts Lookout is not for me. I’d be too nervous and tenuous. “Know your limits” is one of the first rules of hiking.

I think you did the right thing, especially when you’re carrying a load on your back and trying to film. What you did was amazing! And even more amazing that you got up at the crack of dawn to beat the crowd. I could feel your fear. You never have to apologize for stopping when you did. For hikes like this and half dome, a pair of approach shoes are ideal. Absolutely not sneakers. Approach shoes have climbing shoe soles on a hiking shoe or boot upper depending on your preference. Arc’terx, five ten, scarpa and La Sportiva make great approach shoes. Your entire perception of traction and sure footedness will change and you’ll be much safer.

Hello Alice - I've just come across your video series and had to tell you.....superb! I'm headed to Kauai in Sept and after seeing that video have browsed several others and find your editing, commentary and your evident enjoyment of the outdoors to be inspirational! I moved to SW Colorado a number of years ago and hike pretty extensively in CO & UT - I enjoy skiing the Rockies, and beaches....everywhere! Thanks for the warnings about Angel's Landing, I deal with exposure issues and you're right - summits are not the point (and I, too, hate loose sand/scree on sketchy trails)! Alice I honor your experience. I remember doing the first part of the chains at the summit. It was incredibly scary. The local vernacular was "hikers coming off the mountain", which means, people hurtling thousands of feet to their death. I also carried a heavier pack and I felt really top heavy. Nothing felt good, except for heading back early, and my friend and I hiking around the other side of the summit on flatter ground, and watching the epic climbers moving up the face of the nearby climbs.

Yes, it's mad. National parks now imposing quotas. I just got back from Canyonlands Island in the Sky. There was a 40 minute wait to get in - on a Tuesday! Weekends must be nuts.

I’m going to Arches this Friday and am planning on getting there at 6am to make sure I can see it. Coming from Ohio and I really love Utah. I think it’s the coolest state in the country. It’s got it all. Skiing, hiking, and beautiful scenery and the people are very nice.

With hiking becoming more popular over the past year, seclusion on these amazing hikes is becoming more and more unlikely.. This looks like an absolutely beautiful hike. Great outlook on missing those summits. The journey and the trip is what is is all about. Push your limits to where you are just beyond your comfort zone is a great feeling. With your amazing adventures and hikes that most people will never experience you have 0 reason to explain why you did not make the summit but your reasons, make perfect sense and glad you returned safe. Yup, same with the really popular tallest, most dangerous mountains, like Everest and K-2! It's a huge tourist/money making thing for the locals🧙‍♂️🧙🏿‍♀️🧙. Not smart, lots of garbage and even dead bodies up there along the way. It's too dangerous to bring them down. 💁🏽 Hmm. Instead of risking their lives to bring them down so carefully and reverently, wonder why not wrap them up good an tie them to a sled 🛷 or something, and well, let them go... they'll go down! they won't get hurt...😳 right? Long as you have a clear stretch, a straight shot kinda deal, with no trees or rocks to get hung up on. (Just a thought..) 😬 It could save lives!

Hiking is a mind set and you were not feeling it towards the end of the hike...and you were listening to your inner self...best you did ...that hike is sketchy is places...and people have lost there lifes...and if you are getting scared and nervous then it's not fun anymore....and yes alot of people hike that trail and you have to wait for people to come down safely...I don't think people know the difficulty of this hike...but it is very beautiful .

I am with you. I was there four years ago during a busy afternoon with a couple buddies. We made it to Scout's Lookout. Went across that sketchy open section but decided to turn around where the chains resumed. Lots of people and fear of heights forced us back. I do not regret it. The palms of my hands are sweaty just thinking about it.

Wanted to say thank you for this video and your other Zion recommendations. I’m currently staying at Zion Lodge and it is a great location! So I failed to make it past Scout lookout yesterday. I was feeling really good and stopped to take a couple of pictures before the chains and slipped a little on one of the rocks. I had three pairs of shoes with me and I think I picked the wrong ones to wear for this hike. But honestly there’s something about those chains that didn’t feel right. I don’t know, I’m doing the Narrows tomorrow and may give Angel’s a second shot the following day. Thanks again for this video. Mad respect for how you handled yourself when things got sketchy.

This gives me white knuckles and a churning stomach just watching it. I’ve done a couple of sketchy hikes on the Inca trail in Peru with areas of 1000 foot drop offs. Angels landing - even with chains? Never going to do it. You did the right thing!

Alice, You did so well and you made a really smart decision by not continuing. I turned 62 in Dec. and wanted to go one more time before I got too old. I hiked it on May 4 it was tough but I made it to the top. It took a long time and It was really hard this time out. I was so focused on the hike and getting to the top that I didn’t stop to see the sights. Your video and imagery is beautiful. Thank you for taking us on your adventure.

I have heard many great things about this trail. I haven't been to Utah (yet), so no parks for me! I would venture to say this is some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. No shame in turning around. You did a great job even getting that far. I'm sure I'll be just as nervous as you when I go!

The first time I went up this thing was ~ 15 years ago when Zion was not nearly as busy, so I was pretty much alone up there. The last section is so much harder when people are coming up behind you or coming down in front of you. It's scary no matter what though and when it stops being fun, it's time to call any hike!

I Keep watching this. Thank you for being so honest. I live near Yosemite and I see CRAZY people with crazy footwear, no water, wading in streams above a waterfall, selfies and crazy poses on cliffs etc, etc, and yeah, people die every year.

I hiked up there myself but did find a group of college kids when the chains came up. We chatted and joked while hiking up the last section. And before you know it, we were at the top. So never go solo, the thought about the height would get to your head, having a crowd as long helps

Just got back from Zion and my husband and I stopped at Scout Lookout. I was curious to try a bit of chains, but I have a huge fear of heights and the sandy stone made me feel very uneasy. I also didn’t want to start out and then freak out and freeze up which would have been dangerous for everyone else too. We decided not to go past Scouts and are so happy with that decision. Still a great hike if you don’t do the chain section to the summit! Know your limits and don’t be afraid to stop when you feel uncomfortable! So happy you posted this video!

Did this hike 2x, honestly the sketchiest part was the part you already completed imo. But it would have SUCKED going down when all those people were going up so prob a good decision.

This is one of the first videos I’ve watched of yours where I actually feel like I can relate, I don’t mean that disrespectfully at all! Up until about 2.5 months ago, I’d never really pushed myself to accomplish such challenging hikes solo and I recently completed a XC roadtrip to tour national parks and forests and it’s so crazy to see you complete this hike. Never thought I’d have the guts to attempt but I did and to be reminded that I saw exactly the same views you are showcasing in this video is amazing to me. I miss these kinds of adventures and your content was a big inspiration for me to commit to doing such a trip. Keep on rocking on!

So I live in Utah and have been to all of the parks, but the more crowded they get the less I want to go, lol. When the red rock is wet is really really really slippery, I usually hike with Keens because the rubber on the bottom of the shoes tends to grip the sandstone a little better. Avoid stepping on the sand on sandstone. You can also wear a harness and clip yourself into the chains and move your clips over each of the poles. It took me two times before I was able to summit. Next time, go with me :) I can show ya all the tricks for hiking in Utah! Would love to meet you.

Always trust your body. As an avid Rockies back country hiker, there are many times I’ve stopped and turned around. Not only because my body is telling me it’s time. But, at that point it becomes more of a survival feeling rather than what I hike for which is solitude. A friend once told me a phrase I live by. He said that destination you were wanting to achieve will always be there. Try again later. No shame in this. And you did great. Always 3 points of access and stay as flat footed for the most stability as possible. You enjoyed the hike you did and that is why you go. Stay safe and stay smart.

Lots of people just don’t realize just by yourself and with your friends have no different when bad things happen. I hiking about 10 years 95% by myself even very dangerous mountains like scrambling the West Lions in Lions bay,BC Canada. It’s about the ability and how experienced you can deal with technical terrain, the more you hiking different terrain the more confidence you have, and the more you feels safe.
