When it comes to Alicent Hightower its all fire and brimstone, or shall I say fire and blood? In this character analysis hopefully I'll be able to prove she doesn't deserve to be thrown into the fiery beacon of Oldtown, and that she isn't the monster many believe she is.

Alicent is the most respectable character I think. She bears a very undesirable duty with tremendous grace, in stark contrast to Rhaenyra who complains and runs from any responsibility or duty until it’s too late. The second most compelling after Viserys IMO.

We give Alicent a lot of credit for doing what her station compelled her to do when she was powerless to rebel. Clearly, it had a negative effect on her. Rhaenyra made unwise choices, but as royalty she had the luxury of making choices that Alicent did not. Rhaenyra was bucking the same system that broke Alicent. They chose opposite paths, but both of them suffered because the system was the problem.

@therealSimoneCherie Fighting the "system" here, especially in a single generation, is stupid. You think Alyssane could've changed everything overnight? She made a lot of progress given the situation and culture, and yet stuff like this still occurs, just 2 generations later You think Alicent would be able to do any better? Rhaenyra is just stupid, she doesn't care about the way things work. Even Princess Rhaenys knew how things worked, whether she liked it or not. Rhaenyra can't just upstage everything in their culture and society in a day and expect for everyone to follow suit with it, without issue...

Alicent is NOTHING like Skyler. Alicent is a girl consumed by sacrifice for duty and honour and doing everything she can to protect the ones she loved. Her husband was DECAYING infront of her and yet she still cared for him personally. Skyler disrespects Walter subtly for being a failure which is one of the reasons Walter is pushed to become something even if it meant taking the baf way. Skyler is nothing but selfish. It was all about her her her. She is all talk and the only time she was given the smallest responsibility, she cheats on her DYING HUSBAND and gives away all his hard earned money (that he earned by risking his life) to her lover. Comparing Alicent and Skyler is like comparing wood and shit just because they are both brown.

@Ntnt11 I'm not saying Skylar was a saint. Their marital problems were apparent from the start of the show. But aside from the affair with Ted, her reaction is understandable. How would anyone react to the possibility of losing their husband to cancer and being left with a handicapped teen and a baby, then discovering that dying husband is a meth kingpin and being asked to participate in his crimes. He puts them in danger of retaliation from the cartel. He gets in a physical altercation with her and kidnaps their baby. We understand Walter's motives because we see it from his POV. From her POV, she's protecting herself and her children from a threat. But because she also happens to be selfish and annoying, the audience can't sympathize with that.
@capysarah

@@hightower19I've understood Alicent from the beginning. I still like Rhaenyra more, but Alicent is more nuanced than a lot of people give her credit for. When the audience overlooks and dismisses her, they're making the same mistake as the characters. She reminds me a bit of Sansa. Both young women who have to navigate a patriarchal system without the benefit of dragons or other means of intimidation. It's easy and satisfying to root for Dany to burn her enemies with dragonfire and Arya to assassinate bad guys. Alicent and Sansa have to rely on their wits and social skills because for them, violence isn't an option. I guess some people don't find that very exciting.

Not gonna lie, Alicent hate is insane. The situation with marrying Viserys wasn't nearly as simple as many people put it. The Hand of the King (her father) and the King himself (her best friend's father) are the people in power who essentially placed her into this position. Viserys also asked Alicent that she not tell Rhaenyra about their talks... Alicent even tried to make amends wirh Rhaenyra, and is often rejected. She got her own father tossed from court, cause she believed Rhaenyra was being honest. Then she finds out otherwise, and people think that she's the one who's "unreasonable" to be upset how things ended? Blaming her? Bruh 💀

Imagine being Alicent. Imagine your father managing to secure the most favourable position for any woman in Westeros for you. Imagine being far away from home and being alone at court with no one ever seeing you as a person. She may have been the Queen, but that meant nothing to people apart from how she was the baby receptacle for the Targaryens. Imagine peddling to these people who will never treat you as their own no matter how much you've given them; wear their house's colors, tolerate their bullshit. She tried so hard! She went on and supported the girl she knew as her best friend, only for the girl to tell her 'how romantic it must be to sit in a tower, doing nothing but push out heirs.' Read: 'I know you and many other women suffer such a fate. I don't care. It couldn't be me and it will never be me lmao.' Like, Rhaenyra's father was marital r*ping her, had impregnated her, and Rhaenyra had the gall to tell her that? Rhaenyra was so far removed from the reality of most women in Westeros because she herself is able to skirt every law in place by virtue of her being a Targaryen. And to make it worse, Rhaenyra had shown that she held nothing sacred. Not duty, not honor, not even her own mother. So Alicent wore that green dress. She would not peddle to them anymore, she would not beg for scraps from a girl who spurned her compassion. She learned, the hard way, that she only has herself now. It's like watching that one nepo baby at work get promoted and rewarded for doing jack shit while you gave your blood, sweat, and tears for the bare minimum. Alicent had every right to be angry at the world, but she was never angry outright until the eye incident. She was bitter, yes, but she did her duties without fail. Too bad the Targies are so caught up with Rhaenyra that they fail to see Alicent's pov :/

Alicent may have gone too far with asking for an eye but it was viserys' job as a father and the king to enforce a more reasonable resolution that doesnt involve maiming another child. Luke shouldve been send to Oldtown as a ward/hostage of Oldtown under the care of Otto's brother, Hobart Hightower, like Theon Greyjoy in Winterfell. that way Alicent could feel safe knowing that if anything else happens to Aemond Luke will be punished accordingly. this keeps Rhaenyra and her kids in line and Alicent will be content with rhaenyra having one of her kids taken away.

Actually, having escalated with a knife in a fight they started, Lucerys should have been punished far more harshly than he was. Doing nothing sows the seed of war with injustice.

@@jt7638 given that he's a prince too I wouldn't go that far but i do agree that they just let it slide and that he was not punished harshly enough (or at all lets be honest. it wasn't even a slap on the wrist). rhaenyra literally goes "oh you silly boys getting into trouble. go to bed." like they didnt just cut someone's eye out. That said i completely empathize with Alicent. If it were my kid and it was the heat of the moment fury of a parent i would be demanding an eye too so i don't exactly blame her. but from the mind of someone who is not personally involved in the issue, maiming Lucerys may be proper legal action to take in westeros but its not the most moral action to take even if he did take Aemond's eye. as much as i dislike team black (i cant stand them) I'm not about to advocate for maiming a kid regardless of his actions. I think sending him as a hostage to live with the enemies of his mother is sufficiently scary and traumatizing for an 8 year old. We see how being a hostage affects Theon Greyjoy becoming attached to his father figure but at the same time fearing that he could be killed by him at any moment. Not to mention the damage it would do to his relationship with Jace being away from each other for years they will feel like strangers by the time they see each other again. While at the same time he will take to Daeron as a brother. this move alone would severely handicap team black losing one of their boys and his dragon potentially swaying him to Team Green.

@@Shenanakins I like your insights. My belief is that in the quasi medieval world that they lived in, the most important priority was the maintenance of civil peace witin the family. Justice in that age is not to repay maiming the King's son with a scolding or reprimand or short term banishment to New York City/Oldtown. You flog the insolent b*stard who maimed your son, you blind him in one eye, and scar his face in the exact way that Aemond was scarred. This moment was a historic turning point. Viserys did NOT think it through. Aegon's insight juxtaposed with the extraordinary reveal of Rhaenyra in calling for her half brother to be tortured/"sharply questioned" for calling out your b*stards for being b*stards earned her and her son's being disinherited, her dragon privileges forfeited, and Aegon promoted to crown prince. Great video. I think it's also worth noting that while Alicent understandably falls into a rage after Aemond loses an eye, she does calm down. At that point Otto does everything to push her away from reconciliation. Similarly at the final meal she is clearly moving towards reconciliation until first Aemond and then, accidentally, Viserys push her away from it. Even once she's committed to going all in on Aegon's claim she does it in the least bloodthirsty way she can. (Of course Alicent is designed to be one of the more sympathetic Greens I'm curious to see your take on Aegon.)

rhaenyra having children with Harwin only intensifies the belief that Aegon, Aemond, Daeron, jaehaerys and Maelor will have to be killed to secure her throne (Jaehaera and helaena would probably be forced to marry one of rhaenyras boys). Because not only is rhaenyra's claim as a woman with three brothers already on shaky ground but now she has committed high treason three times by passing her bastards off as legitimate putting them in line for the Iron throne and the Driftwood throne. If I were rhaenyra and i needed to protect my claim and the lives of my children i would kill alicent's kids too and alicent knows that rhaenyra needs to do this. viserys and rhaenyra together created a situation where peace was impossible, where the deaths of the boys of one side or the other is necessary for survival

I just started the video, but I think adult Alicent mirrors Ned Stark when it comes to trying to raise the alarm about the Crown's bastard heirs. Yes, we all know the Joffrey was a POS, and wouldve been celebrating if his head and Cersei's were on spikes, and we can idtentify that as an act of good from Ned. But what about Myrcella and Tommen? They're innocent...so how good was Ned, really? Now mirror that with Jahaerys, Luc and Geoff who were seemingly decent kids and wouldve been executed along with Rhaenyra. We could identify that as an act of evil from Alicent. Yes, Ned offered Cersei to evacuate KL, but didn't Alicent (acting through Aegon II) declare that Rhaenyra and her heirs could retain their titles to Dragonstone if they kept away from KL? At that point, the Greens didn't want to draw first blood and were offering terms. The Blacks refused, like Cersei refused. TBH I don't appreciate the level of hate Alicent gets. She's NOT Cersei, but has been manipulated and misguded her whole life. It reflects in her parenting, pollitics, etc. Thats why she dives heafirst into religion to get guidance for the first time. No one is the good guy here, but Im glad no one is technically the bad guy...except Ser Feet.

Not only was Alicent offering fair terms of safety, she was offering a place at court AND royal titles to Rhaenyra's family. The title of Dragonstone is the "heir apparent" seat and is the ancestral seat of House Targaryen. It is why it was given to Stannis Baratheon, the eldest brother of King Robert, rather than the wealthier and more powerful seat of Storms End. These are more than fair terms, but obviously Rhaenyra was too prideful to accept them.

The Hightowers are a powerful family though... they were said to be more powerful than the Tyrells in the early days because they are wealthier (although pledge to them). The Tyrells however held more power as years went by. The Hightowers after all control the second biggest city in Westeros, which is massive and have vassals of their own. They are inmensely rich due to all the trade and the bank of oldtown. They are very similar to a big house, they were almost made lords of the Reach when house Gardener was erased but Aegon finally decided to name the Tyrells instead (probably fearing the over power the Hightowers would have if he made them lords of the Reach as well). By dividing power in the Reach, Aegon secured the area from proper revolts against the crown of one of the most fertile and populated areas of Westeros. I agree with all points here and I don't like Viserys at all. I went through some stuff as a young girl in Romania (eastern European country, very poor, different mentality than America).... That question of why Viserys chose an older teenager to a younger one - even if both were kids.... I met people like Viserys in my life.... And by that i mean men JUST like him. Weak men, in various positions of power according to whatever they were supposed to preside over. Men like him, they are still predators, but unlike a predator who likes to feel in control, they are the predator who likes to feel vulnerable. The girl needed to "look old enough" so he didn't feel like he was abusing a toddler (so she needed to look biologically like a full-grown woman) but she needed to be young enough to still look up the the adult figure, at least in theory. She needed to be young and inexperienced enough to never challenge him as an adult to an adult, but she needed to he old enough to know how to comfort and idolize (at least to appear as if she idolized) him. Sure he was a widower and a man who lost his child - i would even argue that given the time period that ASOIAF is based on, no matter what he did, he would still end up as a widower who lost a child in childbirth. What haunts Viserys is not the status that he is in, but rather the decision he made - to cut the mother open, in PRECARIOUS hopes that the child might be saved. So he needed a wife like Alicent because he needed the supposed innocence of a child who might not fully understand the circumstances of the passing of his other wife, who could still feign sympathy and admiration, without any of the "burdens" of an adult wife, who might have understood what they were signing up to (aka "if the childbirth is extremely difficult, my last moments will be spent in utter agony because some meister will cut me open alive and aware). Alicent was perfect because she had the "endowments " of an adult woman physically (budding chest, period) but the supposed mentality of a lovestruck teenger like Sansa. Except Alicent didn't have the sheltered upbringing of Sansa, who could freely dream of romance stories. Alicent, even as a kid, knew what she was signing up for. She knew she was second to any child she might bear, and she knew that any "strong opinions " she might have would be fruitless, when confronted by her husband's opinions, no matter how childish those opinions were. Alicent wad a child without childhood because she was stuck between a manipulative power-hungry father and an older husband looking for comfort and nothing else besides that.

on the surface yes but not really in the broader sense, by offering her son who is a bastard to marry Alicent's daughter is a trap, like wife are like properties to their husband in westeros, so its clearly a trap like a hostage. and also to support her sons are not bastards when those claims come later in the future.

She offered a dragon egg of the next batch that Syrax may never lay. She offered non existing eggs. If you remember Luce and Jace choose an egg for Joffrey. There were multiple eggs available right now in that moment. Yet she said "If Syrax brings forth another clutch..." Which is like an insult, knowing that she has a few just laying around, but is basically saying she is withholding them on purpose. Maybe in the future.

I'm very much on team black, but I do hold a lot of sympathy for Alicent. She got screwed over by her own father, and is a victim of circumstance. She was dealt a bad hand (for a noblewoman) and tried to play it as best she could, navigating the expectations of herself by her family, society, and what she actually wanted herself. When I first watched the show I did think that she should have realized her father was manipulating and abusing her for his own gain, but I've realized that is incredibly ignorant of me considering I did not have to suffer an abusive parent like she did. While I still can never support the greens in this conflict, I do think you're absolutely right that Alicent in the show can not be passed off as an evil and vindictive person, when she really is just trying to do what's best for her family. Unfortunately, her family is made up of a bunch of greedy assholes.

I'd say Alicent is the most tragic character of the show, and I'm quite baffled by the vitriol. I won't pretend she's a saint by any means, but she was forced into a situation she had no control over and was ruthlessly exploited by opportunistic snakes like her father and Larys Strong. She just wanted to be with her friend Rhaenyra, and Rhaenyra screwed it up due to her inconsiderate actions. If anyone, I'd say Otto is the true monster of the story. His ambition was the cause of all this.

Olivia cooke already stated that Alicent sincerely did think he meant Aegon their son and honestly why wouldn't she? She DOES ask him to clarify several times which Aegon shes talking about. Viserys: don't you remember? Aegon? Alicent asking for clarification: our son? Viserys: His dream. The Song of Ice... and Fi... It is true. What he saw in the North. The Prince That Was Promised. Alicent asking for clarification: I dont understand, viserys. Viserys: The prince... Alicent asking for clarification: PRINCE aegon? Viserys: To unite the realm against the cold... and the dark. It is you. You are the one. You must do this. and he never corrects her and passes out. If she wanted him desperately to be talking about Aegon she wouldn't have asked for clarification three times. because at any point he could've stopped her and said "actually no, im talking about KING Aegon". so what is she supposed to make of that? she probably wouldve asked him again in the morning but he died that night. Also keep in mind that twenty or so years ago on Aegon's birthday celebration he did tell her about a dream involving their son Aegon being born with the conquerors crown, and that was when he was conflicted about having chosen rhaenyra as his heir and was regretting it(episode 3). It was really important to him and he was practically in tears about this dream so its not crazy that she interpreting his last words as a deathbed regret and connecting that to what he told her on Aegon's birthday. his dream was a self-fulfilling prophesy all along. He wanted it so bad that he remarried and had Aegon. Alicent is the one who convinces him to have faith in rhaenyra as his heir and he does that. After that no matter how much he fought against Aegon becoming the king, it still came true. Aegon was supposed to be on the throne so that the dance of dragons could happen.

Thanks for the video. I have sympathy for Alicent's character and it just irritates the ever-living out of me that so many people are simpletons for rhaenyra. Alicent's always followed the rules, did her duties very faithfully, and rhaenyra skirts hers regularly. Viserys was a weak king, too; putting his head in the sand to avoid confronting what literally everybody can see-that rhaenyra's kids are bass turds (youtube has a habit of auto deleting my comments and doesn't warn you on why it's being deleted so I had to censor). You could say his actions, or inactions, is the reason for this whole debacle in the first place. I dislike daemon as well, so he and rhaenyra being together to form a super degenerate team makes me not team black. I wouldn't say I'm team Green either, I just can't stand how so many people throw all reason out the window and love team black. it’s crazy to me videos like these have to be made when the show purposely depict certain events for the audience to understand the stance of front-of-the-house characters better. the moment a hate train forms, a crowd follows and are unable to come up with an opinion of their own. i fell in love with alicent when the show was still very fresh and loved her adult self even more. it’s almost like the show displayed a younger alicent and the traumas she had to endure that makes her who she is as a woman for absolutely no reason at all. these little bits of details don’t matter, they’re just inserted in the show for the fun of it. she has always been this evil little minion with the intent to sabotage everything she lays her hands on from the get go with no good intention for anyone at all. the cherrypicking is atrocious. if the roles were reversed and it were rhaenrya in alicents shoes it would only be acceptable because it were rhaenryas doing. it’s this ridiculous line between “an obvious good and obvious evil” that i keep seeing and i don’t agree with it at all. in the universe of GOT majority if not all characters have some sort of ulterior motive and are either morally grey or borderline evil. i don’t believe there’s pure good but there’s definite pure evil. i’m a green supporter (solely for alicent) but i also love daemon and i don’t think he’s evil, i believe he’s morally grey. he’s not necessarily a bad man, he certainly leans toward evil but he’s definitely not a good man either. his family is a foundation for the values he upholds and motivations for the decisions he makes (ultimately). alicent on other hand, while i believe she isn’t a pure angel because no one is, at heart she isn’t bad. it’s just as she said, she was moved about the boards by her father and is in the game, it’s too late to back out now. so all the choices she makes is also on the foundation of survival for not only herself but her family too. if we want to make a clear distinction, cersei was most definitely evil. a greatly written character, you almost sort of feel for her but nothing at all in comparison to alicents agency. she let power get to her head and became power hungry. now i haven’t read the books and with aegons reign coming to play for season 2 i’m not sure if we will get to see the same fate for alicent (i’d hope not but i would still die on a lonely hill defending her). alicent in this sense is more paranoid while cersei is just plain cruel. cersei deliberately bombs her own city, alicent unintentionally has larys murder his own family which horrifies her. one seems to have more empathy and compassion for people while the other is pretty much born evil and sadistic at heart. if we want to compare anyone to cersei, i’d say rhanerya fits that bill. in short, alicent isn’t the villain, otto is and perhaps larys to some degree. there is not a pure good side as many would like to claim the show portrays when it doesn’t really seem to and there is more grey morality than there is evil, though in the midst there is much pure evil. alicent is not that.

I see people comparing Alicent to Cersei, but it's clear that Rhaenyra was more like Cersei than Alicent was. Rhaenyra had three obvious bastard children. So did Cersei. Rhaenyra was willing to wage war to put her illegitimate children in the line of succession. So did Cersei. Rhaenyra had sexual relations with a family member. So did Cersei. The only reason Alicent was fighting was because she wanted to keep her children alive. Even if she didn't want to do it, Rhaenyra would have to kill her siblings so her claim wouldn't be questioned. Robert did the same thing, even though he didn't want to do it.

Rhaenyra disagrees with the inequality between women and men. Cersei embraces it, she just wishes she were a man so she would have the upper hand she thinks she deserves. She has self-loathing at being "cursed" with a feeble female body, is cruel and judgmental toward every woman she sees, and emulates only the cruel and toxic traits of men (especially her father). Their only similarity is trying to pass off bastards as legitimate heirs. Even then, the events that led each of them to that point aren't comparable.

@@HeatherHolt Her son being a rapist isn't on her, it's on that idiot, Viserys. Only a man can raise another man. Women can only raise boys. Viserys neglected the entire world in favor of Rhaenyra, including his two sons. Alicent did the best she could. She believed the servant girl when 99.9% of people wouldn't have, gave her moon tea, gave her a significant sum of money, and arranged transport for her to safely leave. She also slapped Aegon in the face and literally denounced him as her son to his face. This is nothing short of virtuous. Whether a young man like Aegon does it or a young woman like Rhaenyra, Alicent abhors promiscuity and unfaithfulness, especially if it comes by way of force which both Aegon and Rhaenyra did. She did the best she could in both situations. Aemond isn't any more of a psycho than 90% of the cast. He doesn't turn it against his family, and he's had the right of it all the time. He's right about Aegon, right about Luce and Jace, and got unfairly disfigured as a child in a 1v4 after doing something Targaryens have done the way he did it for eternity. Luce had that shit coming. Can't wait to see Jace and Rhaenyra follow. Forcing Rhaenyra to walk was harsh, but a just punishment for infidelity and paternity fraud. Furthermore, Rhaenyra never shut up about what a tough girlboss she was and how much she hated having children because it's apparently demeaning for women, so I'm sure walking up a set of stairs after being exposed for a hypocrite by having chosen a man to have kids with isn't the worst. Wanted to be a perpetual victim, got actually slightly victimized for the first time in her life. Justice. And funny enough, Rhaenyra got a LOT more humble and wiser after that scene. Alicent knew that the only way to show a perpetual victimhood claimant that they weren't actually a victim, was to victimize them. And it worked. Rhaenyra woke up somewhat after that. Just not enough. And yes, Alicent is certainly passive aggressive, like when she jabbed at Laenor that maybe one day him and Rhaenyra will have a child that looks like him. That is good. That is a strength. Alicent lives in a world where everyone can see plain as day all the horrific corruption of Team Black, but nobody gets to call it out because Viserys will instantly abuse his unearned power to cut out their tongues or execute them because it goes against Rhaenyra. So Alicent does the smart thing. The only thing she can do. She calls it out in a manner nobody can overtly claim is her making any kind of accusations. She exposes the truth to the realm through subtlety without risking her life. With how good she was to that wastrel Viserys, she deserved a lot better than having to mince words the way she did. But again, Alicent, unlike Rhaenyra, took all the actual unfairness of the world in stride and did the best she could with the hand she was dealt instead of blaming it all on men like Rhaenyra. Which is especially funny when you consider that Alicent's problems actually are caused by a man (Viserys), while Rhaenyra's problems are caused by nobody but herself.

The only really negative thing about Alicent imo is that she still chooses to support Aegon even knowing he is a monster. For all of Rheanyras faults, Aegon takes things to a whole new level in apathy and OTHER terrible things. She kinda forced herself into it to an extent, but she really got screwed by the system. If she wasn't so controlled as a kid, she probably would have been more rebellious and been able to get over many of the issues that cause the Dance.

HotD show Alicent is not a monster like the way she is in the book but Alicent should be hated for several reasons and I will go over each reason one by one. I agreed with everything you said in first 6 mins then you mention Viserys should have married someone else and that's when my first argument comes. Viserys was at his lowest and Alicent was the first woman who actually tried to connect with him. Now, lets forget what Otto did and think from Viserys perspective. A beautiful feminine energy is there to help him in his darkest days. Do you really think he is going to think of anyone else at that moment. Alicent indevertly seduces Viserys, just by being there and Otto knew what he was doing. So you cant blame Viserys; falling for Alicent and marry her at that moment. 7:02 Hightowers not major family? Completely wrong. 10:43 Alicent believing in her father that Rhaenyra would kill her children as soon as she becomes queen is totally wrong. How can she believe that? What would make Rhaenyra do that? Such sh!t was done by Maegor but no one ever did such things again. Rhaenyra wont be able to kill Hightowers just like that. Thats fals presumption on Alicents part. You entire Criston argument is also wrong. Rhaenyra is like 16 here and got all the power in world so why wouldn't she use it for little bit of lust? Daemon influenced her wrongdoings and embracing sexuality thing which led to her pursuing Criston. She DID NOT put Cristons life in danger. Rhaneyura just tries to seduce Criston but it was Criston's decision to bang her. He could have just left the room if he was true to his vows. Your compartion between Rhaneyra doing thing for lust and she killing Alicents children just for power is totally wrong. Also, Alicents children didn't wanna be King at all . Aegon II himself didn't care about the crown but it was Otto's ambition and Alicents' stupid fear and that absolutely lame "Aegon misunderstanding" that made Aegon II a king. Alicent believing that Rhaneyra is completely untrustworthy and could kill her children on the basis of rhaenrya f*cking around with Criston is ridiculous. How's Criston trustworthy if he broke the vow himself? Anyways, I am out. People can perceive what they want but Alicent is for sure a bad person and her belief that Rhanyra would kill her and her children after becoming Queen is ridiculous

Alicent was aware that her father was sending her as a temptress. It wasn't her choice, but she was an intelligent girl who understood what was being asked of her. But she have a choice of whether to infom Rhaenyra about the meetings. Either she or Otto decided to keep it from Rhaenyra long before Viserys asked her to. Prior to that conversation she had even counseled him on how to support Rhaenyra in her grief. She openly disagreed with his method and suggested a different way.. But when he says not to tell because Rhaenyra wouldn't understand, Alicent knew exactly what was happening and what the result would be. Her fidgeting was her anxious response to all the deceptions she was carrying out. It was a very bad thing to be a friend's main source of support during her grief over losing her mother but also knowingly being a part of a scheme to replace her mother. In the show one of the girls points out that men don't understand the language of girls. I'm telling you, in the language of girls keeping that from Rhaenyra is forbidden. So people aren't wrong to see her as evill for this act, but I agree that it doesn't make her an evil person. Where I started to see her closer to being evil herself is how she handled Rhaenyra and Criston fucking. People put too much dirt on Rhaenyra for that. A lot of it is disingenuous people trying to play gotcha about women's sexual harassment and the Me Too movement. I don't think anyone reasonably believed that Rhaenyra would coerce Criston for sex in exchange for his life or would have not accepted a firm no if he gave one. We never see her trying to have him punished for no longer wanting to do it, even though she could have gotten away with it. Especially after he smacked her fiance around and killed a guest at the wedding feast. It was definitely being careless and selfish of her, but I doubt she included Criston as part of the rabble at the play whose opinions meant nothing to her.. She chose him to protect her life, she confided in him and was interested in his life. She was attracted to the man she knew and trusted that he would keep their secret. They had spent a lot of time together, so their sexual attraction to each other had probably been mutual for a while. As you said, if someone had walked in he would be done, but short of that he was physically safe with her. And though she didn't consider the emotional weight this he would have to carry, she was willing to talk about it. He ran away when he didn't like what she was saying and put the wall up between them. However, Alicent didn't have the same respect for Criston or his position. When she wanted to know about Rhaenyra's private life she went to Criston, who was Rhaenyra's protector and bound to keep her secrets. Alicent used her position to override that bond and get him to snitch. She did so privately so that she had total control of the situation. When he confessed (that scene was so stupid, right from a soap opera) she held onto the information to see how she could leverage it. Criston expected Alicent to do the honorable thing and have him punished. Instead she also kept their interaction secret. While Rhaenyra had genuine desire and respect for him, Alicent was considering him as simply a pawn. The whole thing was made worse when she refused to let him take responsibility for murdering Joffery. Twice she saw him broken and wanting her to release him from the pain of dishonoring himself, and both times she took away his chances of restoring his honor and made him pay for it by binding him to herself. Whereas Rhaenyra believed they desired each other equally but understood they couldn't be open, she liked and wanted the whole Criston, (who she chose to be with was a reflection of herself). Alicent believed that she could use his honor against him and for her own gain. That's some straight up Otto shit. Like Alicent, Otto took advantage of Viserys's brokenness to push for the marriage with his daughter as well. And in both cases the men were worse off for it over time. She behaved similarly with Larys. She knew he was sneaky, slimey, and underhanded and willing to betray Viserys, Rhaenyra, and Melos. It was those disgusting qualities that she used to her advantage. She used Aegon's brokenness to hide that she had been teaching her children to despise their nephews, and let him take the blame for instigating the rift. I see her as an awful person because she uses people when they are at their worse to advance her agendas. That thinking may have been forced on her by her father, but she never let it go. Even believing that Viserys named Aegon as his heir was helped by him being drugged up and about to die. I personally hate people who do that. They're a kind of predator. There was also that comment about Targaryens having strange sexual habits that she threw at Rhaenyra that would have had me questioning every day of our friendship. All that time she had been secretly nursing digust for her friend's way of life. And of course used it against Rhaenyra to get the upper hand in one of her lowest moments.

What did Rhynera do so far that’s really so terrible besides lie. She watched her mom die from being made to try again and again to have a boy. She knows her dad wishes her to be a boy and is disappointed she isn’t. She’s outspoken and tomboyish. She has a crush on her best friend. She’s made heir which she knows makes people dislike her. Bad things - She made out with her uncle (which she’s a Targyerian so that’s not really weird to them), she seduces cole (wasn’t he much older than her?) which is what I believe daemon wanted her to do so she kinda got played, and was exploring her newfound sexuality, changing from a girl to a young woman (back then 15 wouldn’t be considered too young to get busy had she been married), the older Cole continued this relationship as willingly as Rhynera, she gets married to Loras (is that his name…) and knows he’s gay and says look we can do our duties to our families and have our side pieces, which he agrees to, they’re not marrying for love anyways, she does try to have his kids but she ends up knocked up by Strong, all her children up to that point were by the same man so it’s not like she was fcking everyone, she obvs loved Strong and it’s sad men and women are forced into loveless marriages while later finding love. Had Loras not been shooting potential blanks then everything would be fine. Ok so she has strongs babies, oh and she had to watch her father marry her best friend who then became her stepmom. She raises two sons who seem like nice boys - the only thing they ever did that was like “Eh” was the pig dragon scene which is just kids being punk@ss kids. Meanwhile Alicents kids are terrors and insane. Rhynera even made it to where her husband Loras could run away with his lover and live the free life he always wanted. So she could marry daemon bc she knew her right to the throne would be challenged. She left to dragonstone to get away from all the sht talking and to keep her kids away from hearing they’re bastards. Strong gets killed and that obvs hurt her. So she lost her mom, her best friend, her baby daddy, her home, she is forced to live a lie which she perpetuates (what would happen if she told the truth about her children’s parentage tho, they’d lose their right to the throne, maybe their lives?) bc she has to perpetuate it at this point. There is no alternative. Once Aegon II was born she should have just said I don’t want the throne. But I’m kinda hyped she stood up for what was hers. Visyeras said she would be queen even after he had sons which speaks volumes to what he wanted. Now whether that’s what would be good for the realm is a different conversation but he was in power and that’s what he wanted and people should have respected the kings wishes. But that would be boring! At the end of the day, up to this point where the show ends, I don’t think Rhynera is evil. I think she’s a woman put in an unfair sht situation, over and over again, with so many people conspiring against her, unable to be who she really is, she’s a good mom, her first instinct is NOT to go to war, meanwhile all the men have hard ons at the thought of slaughter and war. Otto for sure had it ready for pregnant Rhynera and her kids to all be slaughtered as soon as the king died. Wow I had way too much to say 😂😂 I left like 3 long a$$ comments Why can’t I be this thorough in real life
@HeatherHolt
@HeatherHolt 8 ай бұрын
Also I think of everything she’s lost so far - her mom and newborn brother, her dad, her unborn baby, her son, her lover/baby daddy, respect and admiration for her as future queen, her best (and only) friend, the man she lost her virginity to, daemon abuses her, her home (when she went to dragon stone initially), and right when it seemed like she might reconcile with her only friend, that friend Alicent sees to it the throne is stolen from Rhynera and given to Alicents son. In front of everyone. She doesn’t want to be the one to start a war, she doesn’t jump to bloodshed, or dragon fire. Even with daemon and others pushing her and even after JUST losing a premie baby that came out disfigured, she even wraps the baby herself instead of having the silent sisters do it, gets herself together and plans a defense. Wants her bannerman ready and those who swore loyalty to her to be just that, loyal. Her sons offer to help, she sends them and one gets killed along with his dragon. She has every reason to be diving off the deep end and I’m excited to see where it goes. I haven’t read the books but I watch a ton of lore video and explanations and alt shift x and Glidus… I love seeing people tear into the final season of GoT as much as I love seeing character videos like this one.

There's a whole lotta bs spin in this video. Regardless of the girl she was when it started, and how she came to be Queen- BE REALISTIC- in the world they're in - Alicent landed square in the best possible position with a King who is in no way the monster she would've had to deal with w so many other Targaryen kings. Her jealousy of Rhaenyra lead to her sticking her nose where it didn't belong and questioning Crispy. She's all about duty, honor blahhhhh but she let him off the hook for no reason whatsoever. Also- while personally I'm not fan of the patriarchy or monarchys- that's the reality in Westeros If the King wants something- that's that And what are you smoking re: Aemonds eye? He was trying to KILL SOMEONE HE instigated all of that He wanted a dragon so badly he couldn't give a grieving child 24 hours to grieve and try to claim Vhaeghar Alicent knowwww her son's are trash She knows Aegon is a boozy rapist She knows Aemond has some serious anger issues She's also an INTENSE HYPOCRITE - going on and on about the Targs and their "queer customs" and then marrying her children? Wtf was that? She didn't give 2 sh*** about her kids. She despisee Aegon, ignores Aemond unless she can use him to play victim, and has zero bond with her daughter who is so put off by her mother she wont let her hug het. And clearly she's constantly keeping her 3rd son her mind? NOT- she never asks about him or mentions him. Really all you have to do is look at the mother/child dynamic differences between Alicent and Rhaenyra to see who is truly trash Do you see Rhaenyra slutting up some creeps foot fetish for gossip? Do you see her sit back permissively letting other ppl kill for her? You can't be this imperceptive. I hope you were just--attempting-- to play Devil's advocate. You failed to make your case At a certain point every adult ceases to be able to use their boohoo bullshit as an excuse for bad behavior. You're letting Alicent off the hook for so many things she did as an ADULT QUEEN fully understanding her power and influence. Why I do not know. You know why Alicent allegedly ' acts based off the fears Otto has put in her mind about the fate of her children should Rhaenyra comes to power?' Because That's WHAT THE HIGH TOWERS WOULD DO, and she knows it Rhaenyra never would have done anything like that - and even if the thought crossed her mind- Aegon didn't want/expect or plan on challenging her. He was 💯 forced to do that. If Otto and Alicent weren't dead set on making a power grab- everything would have been copacetic.

She saves Cole's life and offers him what he views as the need for redemption. She saves the servant girl her son abused and sends her safely away with a large sum of money. She didn't let anyone off the hook. Curb your misandry. Just because Cole was a man doesn't mean he wasn't raped. He was. He didn't want it until Rhaenyra began forcing him. “She’s in the best possible position and her old ass husband isn’t a monster so she should be happy and grateful!” That’s what the start of your comment comes off as, nevermind that she was maritally raped multiple times, or that her husband was SO much older than her, or that she had to play nurse to him as well. As for the Criston thing, Alicent let him off the hook because she saw herself in him. Him and her were alike, both scorned by Rhaenyra (in their opinions) and hating life. She saw a companion, somebody trustworthy, somebody who could devote themselves to her as nobody else could. And Alicent was never about honor and duty and all that until AFTER Driftmark, her complete devotion to the faith after that point was her trying to make up for what she did at Driftmark, otherwise her faith was for herself. She was never super into it until Driftmark. And it’s absolutely disgusting that ur using Larys’ sexual abuse of her as a downpoint. You’re acting like she asked for any of that, he manipulated her into the foot thing, she didn’t know about Harrenhal until after the fact, and him saying he did it for her was another form of manipulation. As for her children, Alicent loves them and resents them in equal measure and I see no problem with that. Comparing Alicent and Rhaenyra as mothers is impossible considering the circumstances. Alicents children come from rape and duty, while Rhaenyras come from love. They would obviously have vastly different relationships with her children. But to imply Alicent doesn’t love them is insane. EVERYTHING she’s done is because she loves the bones of them. She married Aegon and Heleana for protection, by doing that she ensured Heleana would stay at home with her, rather than be married to Jace and off with Rhaenyra and them who she believes will kill her children when the time comes. Her love for Aemond is apparent throughout the whole show and her relationship with Aegon is rightly complicated. He was the end of her girlhood, he was the true start of her misery. But he’s also her firstborn and she loves him so much it burns her, she stood in front of a dragon for him, she did horrible things and committed treason to put him on the throne for his protection. Saying Alicent doesn’t love her kids is truly the most insane thing I’ve ever seen an Alicent anti do

“You do not mention our talks to Rhaenyra, do you?” Thats what king Viserys said, implying that this would be at least the 3rd time they have spent time together. Alicent had at least two times to tell Rhae before Viserys asked her not to say anything. My question is what was she scared of? Her father? Not being queen? Everything else you said was facts but I’m tired of people acting like Alicent was innocent in betraying her friend. Otto did not ask that his daughter be discreet, he probably would’ve preferred that the kings time with his daughter was known to the relm if not to show how devoted his family was, then to push Viserys hand into not making his daughter look sullied. It’s true that her telling Rhae might not have changed anything, but backing out of a betrothal is much harder than not spending anymore time alone together, especially for ‘Viserys the peaceful’. Then she came at Rhae crazy after she had already betrayed her. Like realistically why would I tell my secrets to someone who’s kept their own secrets from me and by doing so, shown they can’t be trusted? Also why wouldn’t I lie to my stepmother who swooped in while my mothers body was barley cold AND body swapped my best friend? Rhaenyra owed Alicent NOTHING, especially not the truth Edit: to be clear I am *only* talking about Alicents relationship with Rhaenyra. She’s a horrible friend but I’m not comparing her to Maegor.

@@jjosifovic But Rhae doesn’t expect Alicent to support her. Alicent is expecting their relationship to stay the same or eventually get there but it’s not realistic. She already showed that she is a traitor, she knew if she had a boy the realm would push to denounce Rhae. That wasn’t the only mistake she made, it was just the first time she could’ve shown her sworn allegiance to Rhae but didn’t…for weeks to months…essentially cutting Rhae out of her life. She did it again when she chastised her for being an incestuous whore, instead of talking to her like a friend, she acted like Rhae betrayed her. She did it again when she took Cole under her ‘protection’. Again when she called for Rheas children to be brought to her as soon as they were born. It wasn’t once over 16 years it was many times over 5-8 years. If we’re going to assume Ali stopped being Rhaes friend when she started courting Viserys… then it’s survival of the fittest and Ali did nothing wrong. @@wallycola5653 Asking for perfection from anyone but Brienne is unrealistic 😂 I didn’t say Alicent was evil for it I said she was a traitor, which she is. By the defense that Alicent is just a teenage girl in a complicated political situation we can also use that for Rhae with Cole. Rhae watched her best friend, the only person she was close to, get married off like a broodmare to her father…shortly after watching her mother die trying to give her father a son. Her uncle, who is the only person she felt understood her paraded her through a pleasure house with her face on display, made out with her in front of everyone and then left her to find her own way home, which seems to be to disgrace her. She assumes she’s no longer the heir as she now has a brother. She has no one. She’s intoxicated. If shes going to be sold that way too, she didn’t want her first time to be with a Lord Dondarrion or Blackwood. Rhaenyra wasn’t the one who said anything about that night, Cole was, the rumors weren’t even about him until after he flipped out. Then the next morning her ex-best friend summons her, just to accuses her of exactly what Daemon wanted people to think. Oh *and* her bestfriends dad has been spying on her for an undisclosed amount of time waiting for her to make any misdeed. Alicent knew that her father pushing her to court Viserys also meant giving him sons to contend with Rhaenyras claim. If she refuses to step down, Rhae could be killed. In some ways it’s more dangerous for Rhae that it’s Alicent over another. Alicents family connection to the faith shouldn’t be dismissed as the same pull that other families have. She’s not evil for this, just very disloyal. Viserys’ other contenders for queen were known and if it wasn’t **Rhaenyras best friend** it wouldn’t have been an issue for Rhae to know. She was evil for making Cole think his tantrum was ok and Rhaenyras fault. She was evil for forcing a mother to either part with or carry her freshly born child to Ali for inspection, like was Rhae going to swap her baby for a silver haired one??? Ali always felt like Rhaenyra pushed too many boundaries, she chastised her for it often from what we saw. I have a lot sympathy and empathy everywhere for Ali except for their friendship. I don’t even think she was out of pocket for calling for Luke’s eye or much she did after because Rhae was out of pocket by asking for sharp questioning. My problem with her is that Ali treated Rhae as if it was always going to happen from the moment she put on her mothers dress. Rhae killing her siblings is a self fulfilling prophecy brought to us by Otto & Co.

Alicent never admits that Viserys did not love her cos her father had punted her. Viserys eventually regrets marrying her reason why doesn’t regard her children as much. Evn though she does horrible things she does them with the intention of protecting her family. And there is no purer motivation than that. But whatever I accept that the fan base sees her as a villain even though they are ALL WRONG. I didn't care to watch HotD because I really hate unnecessary sequels, prequels, spin offs, reboots, and remakes. I knew I wouldn't like it. But then I started seeing all the comments comparing her to Queen Cersei so I thought ok I loved Cersei sooooooo much that I want to see if Alicent Hightower is anything like her. I watched and sure enough I hated it as a whole and the only 3 moments I liked all involved Alicent. I loved when she declared war with her green dress. I loved when she went after Rhaenyra after her son lost an eye. And my favorite moment was when she faced certain death as she stepped in front of a monster to defend her son. But I was do confused as to why the fanbase called a villain when there isn't a single moment of anything she does that can be seen as villainess. The one thing she has in common with Queen Cersei is the willingness to protect her children at all cost. I actually think Rhaenyra has more in common with Queen Cersei's negative traits like their power hungriness, their sleeping around with whoever they want, and passing off their illegitimate children as the heirs to the throne. I'm still so confused

You forgot about her relationship with Larys. 🤔 Why? She could’ve told Rhaenerya about Otto sending her to “comfort” the King. Yes, Viserys asked her not to tell Rhaenyra, AFTER sometime had passed. If you seriously think, Alicent, thought Otto, was sending her to “see” Viserys, just to be “a friend.” Get real. Alicent knew, Otto had ulterior motives. She knew the mission. He told her to put on her mama’s dress. Do you get dolled up to go see a “friend?” Alicent was no innocent. She had been raised at court. In one of the first scenes, she and Rhaenyra are speculating about another Lady at court, being secretly pregnant. Alicent is exactly, what the writers said about her, one of the 54%. She knew her friend wouldn’t approve of her, spending time with her daddy. After hours, in his private chambers. Would you like it, if your best friend became your step-daddy? Hell no. Also, make no mistake. Alicent was jealous of Rhaenyra. We saw this first, in the chapel. Rhaenyra said, she wished Viserys, would stop seeing her as a little girl. Alicent’s face, was like damn. I WISH my dad, saw me and treated me like a little girl. Later on, she was jealous, Rhaenerya got to enjoy her young life. To an extent. Rhaenerya was out in flea bottom, at the wine sinks and houses of I’ll repute with her uncle. Sewing her wild oats. Enjoying being young. (For a little while.🙃) Where was Alicent? Stuck at home, with a crying baby, a bratty toddler and a decaying old man. Whom she had to “comfort,” whenever he called.

ironic that rhaenyra's reasons for hating alicent in the first half of season 1 are childish and lame, cause that's how alicent haters are w/ her. why are you blaming the kid when the king is right there?
