@lemonadelemon1960 it's because Rheanyra knows she is getting away with multiple crimes and her father is so willing to overlook her bullshit that she can almost have Aemond tortured and Alicent executed in this very scene and all over her own lies and negligence to even cheat properly. Had Aemond or Aegon folded in the moment and admitted it was their mother Alicent would have been killed and if they said nothing or gave an insufficient answer Viserys may have allowed Aemond's torture which would have led to him telling and Alicent's death, and a president for cruel torture and execution for anyone who dare speak the truth on her children. Leaving Driftmark and the Iron Throne open to being taken by bastards and house Valerion being outright usurped by Targaryen/Strong leniage. I absolutely love the duality and contrast they have set up here. Rhaneyra is the princess, first born and HEIR. Her entire life should be like Alicents, a slave to duty and tradition, furthering the family line, etc. Instead, she refused all those Lords who wanted to marry her, refused to just be a woman on the sidelines, fought to be the heir, and then still flouted her duty by having premarital affairs, extramarital affairs and doing whatever she wanted. Alicent has been an obedient tool for her father and then husband her entire life. Yearning for the freedom Rhaneyra has. Alicent hates her own life and finds it unfair that she has done everything expected of her for her family while Rhaneyra gets to do whatever she wants without consequences. This was hinted at in episode 4 or 5 when they are talking and Rhaneyra says "I don't want to marry an old man, and be locked in a tower forced to birth sons until I die". It was quite obvious that line really hurt Alicent.

0:15 you can see the exact moment Alicent snaps. The moment she realises that no matter what Rhaenyra does (committing high treason by passing her bastards as legitimate sons, asking for her 10 years-old brother Aemond to be tortured after he just lost an eye, etc), Viserys will *always* have her back. You can see before that Alicent is paranoid, yes, but she doesn't make moves against Rhaenyra, doesn't train Aegon to be king, nothing. Part of her still hopes. But at this precise moment, she realise it's useless. Viserys will never protect the children she carried. Worse, he even calls her Aemma even though she took care of him all these years. He doesn't care about her, doesn't care about their children. So she *snaps*. She has a public breakdown, she acts in desperation, not in anger. She's terrified, you can see it. She begs Viserys to do something, lays down everything in front of Rhaenyra, basically begging her to realise that not everyone can be as free as her. But it's useless.

I would not see it as that rhanerya actually tried to be on defensive after she learned her son called her son bastards which if got out of hand can be dangerous and she has to protect her children,and plus aemond was being dick by mocking the children on their dead parents and literally tried to kill Jace with a rock,Luke only cut his eye out of defensive and fear for his brother after getting beaten,(also I actually feel sorry for all characters in house of the dragon evens alicent except Otto I blame him for all of this)
@LadyDreamfyre2 жыл бұрын
@@lukebegg7114 He didn't try to kill Lucerys otherwise he would have immediately started to bash his head with the rock, instead he slowly lowers it. If you look at the fight, he raises the rock and looks at the others but doesn't hurt Luke. He's clearly trying to scare them off considering they've ganged up on him *four vs one* and beat him up. Even Baela and Rhaena call out for Jacaerys when he grabs his knife. They're basically telling him to stop, and that it's going too far. So no, Aemond isn't wrong for defending himself. I get that Rhaenyra's afraid for her children but a) *she* decided to have obvious bastards in a society that hates bastards so that's on her and b) kids yell insults at each other all the time, and Aemond, being 10, probably doesn't really understand how dangerous it would be for Jacaerys and Lucerys if they were officially recognised as bastards. Plus, by being so defensive of her children parentage, she's basically proving everyone right. If she had acted as if they were just insults kids throw at each others all the time, she might have protected them more efficiently. Also if Aemond is a dick for claiming Vhagar (which he isn't because dragons aren't inherited + Vhagar wouldn't have accepted Rhaena as a rider), what about Rhaenyra and Daemon banging literally three hours after Laena's funerals? That's messed up. Plus, in the end, that doesn't disprove my first point of Alicent snapping and why. Aemond didn't deserve to be maimed forever over a dragon because he had already earned Vhagar by proving himself worthy of her. Only Vhagar could set a price for claiming her, not humans.
@LadyDreamfyre2 жыл бұрын
@@C-eo1rt If it isn't treason, why doesn't she publicly present them as her lover's son? Oh right! Because it is *still* treason. He's not lord of Dirftmark yet, and the others Velaryons have a right to their inheritance. Plus, in the end, that doesn't disprove my point of Alicent snapping and why. Aemond didn't deserve to be maimed forever over a dragon because he had already earned Vhagar by proving himself worthy of her. Only Vhagar could set a price for claiming her, not humans. He’s a Prince too?! Viserys is gonna execute his wife for wanting justice for his own son?! Huh?? What kinda weak King does nothing while his own seed gets his eye poked out by a couple of bas-terds? He was more worried about protecting Rhaenyra’s illegitimacy than his son. Ppl really acting like if some kids did that to your 10yr old in the sandbox ya'll just gonna be like "oh word? Kenny's the middle child. So no biggie.” A mother’s rage, while unhinged, is totally understandable. The king shoulda handed out a more reasonable punishment before it even got to eye for an eye. @@Elegantwoes I never said or assumed that you know nothing, I was pointing out that there was a difference in the wording used between you and Rhaenyra. It is fair to take what Rhaenyra said as a euphemism considering, yes, it is Westeros. This world can be bloody and violent on anyone, no matter the age, but it is also fair to take her suggestion to "sharply question" Aemond literally as well. It's the consideration that it is not within the scope of her character, as she's shown many times her restraint in outwardly hurting her family (i.e. torture, slain, etc.), regardless of whether she likes them or not. Actually, she's never shown restraint because she's never even been seen to have that intent in the first place. So her saying "sharply questioned" really could have been meant literally. But if we're to disregard her character study, logically speaking, suggesting to have a child - especially one of the King's children who also happens to be your own half-brother, regardless of you being older and being the heir which gives you way more power - outright tortured in front of all those people would not set a good example on how you'll be as a ruler. It says you'd be ruthless, and if they've lived in peace for years, no one wants to have a ruler who's already got blood like that on their hands before even wearing the crown.

By not doing so he not only showed clear favouritism but also made it clear that a Targaryen can harm another Targaryen unpunished, breaking the taboo established by Jaehaerys. I’m not on the green side myself, Aemond had it coming, but Viserys should’ve been fair (gouging out Luke’s eyeball is too extreme, but SOME punishment). Notice how Viserys and Rhaenys even though both had claims on the throne, never crossed their minds to kill or go to war against eachother and still loved themselves as a family. I’m aware is mostly Alicent’s and Otto’s fault, but Viserys failed miserably in not teaching his family the value of filial love (the exact same value his grandparents, Jaehaerys and Alysanne taught all their direct descendant, Viserys and Rhaenys included).

Seeing all the debates in the comments about 'questioned sharply', it is interesting to note that the show actually reverses the order in which Rhaenyra and Alicent make shitty demands. In the book Alicent is the one to first demand Luke's eye, and Rhaenyra responds with the suggestion to question where Aemond heard her sons were bastards. Basically, "HMM since you want to cut my son's eye out ALICENT, I WONDER WHO told Aemond my children were bastards, maybe we should question him sharply, what do you think ALICENT". It's an example of the show taking a line from the book without considering the context - Rhaenyra was reacting to Alicent threatening her child. Alicent, to be fair to her, was reacting to her son's injury, but she didn't need a second threat to react to. It does give the scene a more dramatic escalation, but its not really fair to Rhaenyra - it makes her the aggressor in a situation where she was just reacting defensively in the book. Even in the context of the show scene however, Rhaenyra was still reacting to a threat. If Aemond is calling her children bastards, that means Alicent is raising her children to coup. Aemond casually mentions that Helaena will be Aegon's queen on day in this episode, so we know this is the case. Since the rumour is now being spoken aloud, it is politically savvy to take control of the narrative and get her father to publicly solidify his support for her sons legitimacy, while backing Alicent into a corner. Again, the reversed dynamics make Rhaenyra come across as more aggressive, but it is a rumour that could threaten her children's lives (remember how Otto's first coup proposal is 'kill Rhaenyra and her entire family'). Complain that the rumour is true all you like, but the truth isn't a virtue in of itself if it gets innocent children killed. And to those who say "well she should have thought of that before she had bastards" - what parent in the world would go "welp fair enough, my bad, guess I'll just roll over and let them endanger my kids"? What exactly do you expect her to do? Plus, she didn't ask to be forcibly married to a gay man. In the book she argued against it because she knew it was going to be a problem when it came to producing heirs, and only agreed because Viserys threatened to displace her as heir. In the show, the marriage is a consequence of her having consensual premarital sex - something Viserys and Daemon got away with all the time when they were her age without consequence (and Aegon gets away with much worse). She still does her duty, marries the man her father commands (she never had a pick-your-consort option at all in the book by the way), she produces heirs to the best of her ability in the situation her father put her in, and she faces her fear of childbirth (which killed both her mother and grandmother). So there's the duty and sacrifice. Finding happiness with Harwin doesn't negate that.

She basically did ask to be married to Laenor. She refused every single offer she was given and then tried to fuck Daemon which essentially forced Viserys to put a stop to her bullshit before Daemon became next in line for kingship again. She risked everything by fucking Crispin (including Crispin’s life), and is extremely lucky she didn’t get pregnant. She didn’t even resist her marriage to Laenor, because she thought him being gay was actually a positive to her. She was not pushed into a corner, she was just irresponsible. She was given more freedom than could ever be expected for someone in her position, and she made awful decisions at every interval. Moral of the story: monarchy is stupid, because expecting irresponsible dipshit teenagers to make rational decisions that ultimately affect the lives of millions upon millions of people, is a bad idea.

I wouldn't say asking for ger little brother to be tortured is acting defensively regardless of when she did it. Also nothing you suggest negates the fact she shouldn't have had bastard children with a non valerion. So she really didn't commit duty and sacrifice in the show, and only achieved one of the viruses in the books.
@sheepstealinggreatgreatgrandma11 ай бұрын
@@fightingmedialounge519 honestly, I don't think Rhaenyra genuinely aimed for or expected Aemond to be tortured (in the show no one seems to consider it a genuine possibility) - her goal was to back Alicent into a corner by establishing Aemond's words as treason and publicly asking where he got it from. Still messed up, but in the context of the book it is in response to Alicent physically threatening her children. If its understandable for Alicent in the show to flip out and demand violence, then its understandable for Rhaenyra. Add that the fight between the kids goes down differently in the book. In the book it starts because a 10-year-old Aemond shoves a 3-year-old Joffrey (to shut him up so he can claim Vhagar in peace), and 6 and 5 year old Jace and Luke come to their little brother's defence (Baela and Rhaena are only 3 and are not there). Aemond of course easily beats them because they're half his age and size, and he is quoted as having 'savagely pummelled' Jace before Luke came to his defence. So Rhaenyra in the book is also reacting to her 6-year-old getting beat up by a much older kid, with much more serious injuries. No kid deserves to lose an eye, but book Aemond is so much more of a bully that the accident almost serves him right for beating up little kids! Its understandable that those same little kids' mother would be hostile towards him. But again, 'questioned sharply' is really aimed at Alicent - and in the book this is also with the context of book Alicent bullying her stepdaughter since she was 9. The Rhaenyra that said that line in the book had a very different life than Rhaenyra in the show.

The King does nothing when Rhaenyra asks for Aemond, his own son and her half-brother to be tortured even though he already got maimed and has been tortured enough. Then, he just has the nerve to favor Rhaenyra and her sons over his other children with Alicent. He never loved Aegon or Aemond or even Helaena and just straight up neglected them for his precious daughter. I completely understand Queen Alicent’s frustration here because now, it’s kinda confirmed that her husband will always have Rhaenyra and her sons’ back and never have her or her own kids’ backs at all, even though it’s them who are in more danger than Rhaenyra is because once she ascends the throne, their lives will be forfeit. Not even Helaena is safe since she is to wed Aegon and have babies with him. And Viserys won’t do anything about it and just favor Rhaenyra over his other kids, even though it’s his bad parenting that caused all of this and how Aegon and Aemond end up the way they are. Calling Rhaenyra’s children bastards is more serious than you think. It would have meant the death of her kids and herself being disinherited, maybe even killed for treason. It’s one thing to know her children’s true parentage but another thing entirely to make the accusation public. It’s a death sentence, for the accuser if they make such a claim without proof and death for the children if they can prove it. Not saying that Aemond loosing an eye isn’t serious or that there shouldn’t be consequences. I’m just saying that the consequences for Alicent’s children calling their nephews bastards is more serious than people think.

Alicent’s mistake was trying an over hand attack, those tend to be easy to stop. She should’ve went with a lunging thrust which has the force of the whole body behind it (making it harder to stop, and easier to parry. But there wouldn’t have been space to parry). Since Rhaenyra was in such tight quarters surrounded by the Sea Snake and his men, and no one was able to stop Alicent before her attack. It’s safe to assume that a thrust would hit its mark. And the whole war between green and black houses could’ve been avoided. Yeah Alicent would’ve been sentenced to death, but the king is too weak of will to have his children with Alicent killed. Once Rhaenyra is gone, Alicent’s eldest would’ve become next in line. And yeah I know killing Rhaenyra would bring trouble from the Sea Snake, but the king has more dragons and Daemon. So they might have gone to war, but the Sea Snake would ultimately lose that war.
