Found this beginning of 2025. Divine timing. I had this intention, energy & sentiment when I started dating a man with 3 children. He unfortunately couldn’t believe me and turned out to be quite immature as a person. We learnt a lot about ourselves while we were together. I think the lyrics paint a simple story that isn’t always possible. I’m thrilled to see other commentators say they love their step mother and that the relationship between them is inclusive and positive. I cried listening to this song because I see myself in the lyrics. A part of me that he couldn’t see, when I was actively showing him who I was in this regard. And interesting that Edie Brickell was involved, with a writing credit. He and I look like Paul and Edie. After it ended, a friend told me that he and his broken family were not ready for my light, and I was ultimately protected from their greater dysfunction.
