Growing up in a small town in Norway during the 80s, New York was always the shining city on the hill that I dreamed of visiting. When I finally went for the first time in 2012 I had this song playing in my head all the time while enjoying the view of the 230 5th rooftop bar 🥰

Hello Alicia. The first time I heard this song something inside me changed. I have suffered with depression my whole life but didn't know it till i listen to this song. This song made me break down in tears and i couldn't understand why. That's when my life ended. I got a second chance in life and got help , learned it was depression. I guess you saved my life so I thank you for that. Whenever the depression get bad I listen to this song . Their is no help or a cure for depression and their is only one outcome.

What I love about Alicia is that she's one of the few female mainstream artists today that is a true musician. Others are singers, performers, celebrities...she's a pure, simple musician first and foremost. Something missing and highly underrated in current music industry, that is so eager to rely on shock value, controversy and and sex to sell females. We need more authentic women musicans that inspire a new generation of artists (as opposed to inspiring girls to become sluts and sell). I heard Alicia speak in a TV show about women issues the other day; besides being a wonderful artist, she's one of the most intelligent and down-to-earth famous people I've seen. Forget Beyonce hypocrisy trying to be a diva and the girl next door at the same time, forget Miley, Katy and the rest of them trying to be something else to grab your attention. Alicia is so authentic, smart and truly humble that such elements make her stand out from the crowd of pretentious bitches.

Beyonce is the worst (as you said, hypocrite) because she's all "FEMINIST" but she's always half naked and shaking her bootie, so, what's up sister? you claimed women are treated as sex objects but you seem to like it.

Ooh-ooh-ooh, New York Ooh-ooh-ooh, New York Grew up in a town that is famous as a place of movie scenes Noise is always loud There are sirens all around and the streets are mean If I can make it here, I can make it anywhere, that's what they say Seein' my face in lights Or my name in marquees found down on Broadway Even if it ain't all it seems, I got a pocketful of dreams Baby, I'm from New York Concrete jungle where dreams are made of There's nothin' you can't do Now you're in New York These streets will make you feel brand-new Big lights will inspire you Hear it for New York, New York, New York On the avenue, there ain't ever a curfew, ladies work so hard Such a meltin' pot On the corner sellin' rock, preachers pray to God Hail a gypsy cab Takes me down from Harlem to the Brooklyn Bridge Someone sleeps tonight with a hunger far more than an empty fridge I'ma make it by any means, I got a pocketful of dreams Baby, I'm from New York Concrete jungle where dreams are made of There's nothin' you can't do Now you're in New York These streets will make you feel brand-new Big lights will inspire you Hear it for New York, New York, New York One hand in the air for the big city Streetlights, big dreams, all lookin' pretty No place in the world that can compare Put your lighters in the air, everybody say, "Yeah-yeah, yeah-yeah" In New York Concrete jungle where dreams are made of There's nothin' you can't do Now you're in New York These streets will make you feel brand-new Big lights will inspire you Hear it for New York

I'm a Kiwi (New Zealand) male hemipelvectomy (complete left leg amputee as a result of my near-death motorcycle accident here in 1990 when I was 26). I always had a dream of competing in the New York Marathon as a member of The Achilles Track Club - however it never came true. When 9/11 occurred and I watched the tragedy on television I couldn't believe what I was seeing. When I first heard Alicia Keys singing 'Empire State of Mind' I thought to myself 'oh wow this is going to be a mega hit'. I FELT the song. And now every time I hear the song it always sends shivers up and down my spine. And when both Alicia and Jay-Z perform the song together - I really don't believe there is a more powerful tribute to NEW YORK. Over here in New Zealand on Tuesday 22 February 2011 at 12.51 p.m. a tragic magnitude 6.3 earthquake almost took out the South Island main city Christchurch , killing 185 people and injuring several thousand. So I guess may be both cities have something in common i.e. adversity. I read the book 'The Man Who Would Not Be Defeated' the story of W. Mitchell who is an American motivational speaker and businessman. He is a former member of the United States Marine Corps, burn victim, paraplegic, and a former small-town mayor. I totally believe in his mantra: 'It's not what happens to you, It's what you do about it'. And to me, 'Empire State Of Mind' is a song about HOPE & FAITH that no matter how much adversity you may experience in your life - NEVER GIVE UP. So although I never got to compete in the New York Marathon - in 1994 over here in Christchurch, New Zealand I set the World's Fastest Time for an A.K.A. (above knee amputee) using crutches on my one good right leg. My time of 5 hours 58 minutes 13 seconds beat the existing time of 6 hours 22 minutes by 23 minutes. My time remained unbeaten for 19 years. From 1992 to 1998 I completed 6 half and 6 full Marathons on crutches. However such performances have taken its toll on my body and in 2010 I had my good right leg hip joint replaced. Now I still exercise and currently I am 'wearing in' my new prosthesis (artificial limb) that is going to take some time. I am fortunate as I understand patience reasonably well. If you have taken the valuable time in your life to read my comment I would like to take this opportunity to thank you and wish you all the very best life can possibly offer you. Leighton S. (New Zealand)
