I've been a huge U2 fan since 1982 when I first heard of them as a 13 yr old Aussie kid....and then in '83, 'Under a Blood red Sky'...bloody amazing. I watched Live Aid...live, as a 15 yr old - just to see Queen and U2.....I've seen U2 live in concert a few times and I was lucky to see Queen live at Wembley as well, when in the UK playing cricket a couple of years later. I saw U2 on the Pop Mart tour in Brisbane in 1997, when they dedicated this song to Michael Hutchence and yet this may still be my favourite version of this song...MJB is amazing....really, what a bloody voice mate....

Late to the party again. Damn it! She is great! Great song. And Mary makes it that way. You are all correct. Every comment. And she has questions in the song. Meant for us all. What are our answers? Each one of us has an answer. Great words in this song. Love is a higher law. Love is a temple. We're one, But, we are not the same. Except for ONE thing. LOVE! If we can blame someone for our shortcomings, well good for us, right? The lepers in our heads may disagree. You got to do what you should. Carry each other! ONE! That is what we have. Like it or hate it. You can't escape it. We are all One. When you see it, your family just got really large. Despite differences. Such as Religion, Race, Ethnicity, Social Class. We are still all One. The true beauty of this song. Oh yes anyone can reject it. It is the truth. The truth is never popular. Jesus is mentioned in this song. Did He leave a bad taste in your mouth? If so, I know why. Religion. The message was corrupted by religion. No one knew that the temple represented Love until now. Well some did. So what about you?

Well at least somebody in he comments actually gives credit to the band that wrote the song. Yes I love Mary but after reading the comments you would have thought she wrote the damn song. It’s a little easier to sing a classic song rather than write a classic. Just a tiny tiny bit easier.
@naitch16 Жыл бұрын
Bono wrote the lyrics
@MikeKBar137 ай бұрын
@@jbzooropa72 For me the song & lyrics were inexplicably lost from my memory (despite their indisputable brillance), until Mary brought it to another place and infused it with so much life & soul. But re-tracing the story of the song itself (there's a documentary on KZbin about the band arriving in Berlin to record Achtung Baby in dire need of inspriation), and Mary's later discovery of the song asked to sing it in tribute to Bono (forget the occassion), and her agreement to do so, makes this collaboration seems like a series of miracles to me, for which I am grateful! And I agree the lyrics are spectacular. The use of questions to explore the pathos of the divide and takes ownership (at least in part) - "did I disappoint you? Or leave a bad taste in your mouth? You act like you never had love, and you want me to go without. Did I ask too much? More than alot? You gave me nothing, and that's all I got", and the declaratives pointing to a better mind set: "we're one, but we're not the same, we get to carry each other, carry each other, one" For me Mary carried this song to a place that the original version only dreamed of. No wonder Bono sent her flowers! This collaboration is the very quintessence of the song itself: "We're one, but we're not the same, we get to carry each other ... one"

Muchas gracias MJB.

Her frentic energy leafing up to that section signifies the work intentionally traumatized people must concoquer in so called "civilized" barbaric Western systems of landlessness & debt/wage slãvery.

Did I imagine this.........?.......Did Bono sing the opening better than the original ?........... and then Mary came into the song and helped make a classic song truly immortal. I don't think that I have ever heard this song done better than this.

Some people think U2 is(was)always too pretentious. The fact that they think enough of her and know great artists enough to remake a great song into something even greater reinfoced my opinion of them. One of the best bands of all time and especially since the 80s. Them or REM or Talking Heads or The Pixies

I've loved this song since it first came out, but now, when I'm singing to myself, in my mind I'm hearing MJB. I never thought this song could be better than it was until her. There some slight differences but there are also major moments that blow my mind.

Completely agree. The serioius of miracles that brought Mary J to this almost forgotten song to do what only she could, is something I am grateful for. She takes a beautiful poem and infuses it with so much passion and soul!! I can't even imagine this song without her version, and all the wonderful covers that it inspired and continues to inspire. Such a beautiful collaboration!

When Bono is your backing vocals, and you sound really strong, and Bono let you have this song as your own. And the results are like the video above. Bravo ...
@MikeKBar137 ай бұрын
So agree. There's a humility that Bono exemplifies. I think he realizes that opportunities to collaborate with someone as special as MJB are all too rare, and her singing their song and the way that she elevated it, is the very quintessence of the song itself. "We're one, but we're not the same, we get to carry each other, carry each other ... one" No wonder he sent her flowers! So much gratitude for the series of miracles that brought this video into the world!

I love how at the end "St. Bono" kisses MJB's hand. There's love and respect in that gesture. Love that.

@@boogieeck Yes Yes Yes!! Attitude and Mind Set Shift. Intention over Obligation. I feel the same way about this song. Lyrically it seems like a masterpiece. Questions to explore the pathos of the divide and takes ownership (at least in part) - "did I disappoint you? Or leave a bad taste in your mouth? You act like you never had love, and you want me to go without. Did I ask too much? More than alot? You gave me nothing, and that's all I got", and the declaratives pointing to a better way forward out of bitterness and hate. When I research the way the song came about, Mary heard about it and got involved, it feels like an absolute miracle to me! So much gratitude!
