There are numerous types and brands of diapers. Choosing the right sized diaper is key to keeping your baby comfortable and preventing leaks. As your baby grows, you'll need to purchase larger sized diapers so they continue to fit comfortably and work properly. There are several ways to determine when it's time to go to the next size in diapers. I’ll discuss the Top 5 ways to determine how to correctly fit your babies diaper size and when to go up in size.
Know your baby's weight. Most diaper manufacturers size diapers based on a baby's weight. Knowing your baby's exact weight can let you know if she’s outgrown her current diaper size and is ready to move up a size. Your doctor can let you know how much your baby weighs when you take her for checkups. You can purchase your own baby scale, but if you want to save some money. You can also weigh yourself on an adult scale and then weigh yourself while holding your baby. The difference in the two weights will let you know how much your baby weighs. Then check the box for weight that they recommend for your baby.
2. Check the fit of the diaper. If the diaper fits like a bikini or pulls to one side, it's likely the wrong size. A diaper should be straight and symmetrical. The waistband should fall right at the waist to prevent leaks and blow outs.
3. Inspect your baby’s waist and legs. Look for signs her current diaper is too tight, such as red marks or rashes around the legs and waist where the diaper is too tight against the skin. Even if your baby's weight is appropriate for the size diaper you are using, if the diaper is irritating your baby's skin, it might be time to move up to the next size.
4. When you put on the CLEAN diaper make sure the flaps go around the waist without pulling or tugging on the velcro part and that it goes over the baby's belly button. Once the diaper is wet the diaper will lower to be right under the belly button and then you know that's the correct size.
5. Pay attention to how well the diaper is working. If you notice the diaper is leaking through to your baby's clothes each time it’s wet, it’s likely that the diaper is too small and you need the next size diaper. While you can expect occasional leaks, a diaper that is too small will produce more frequent leaks.

I was so preoccupied talking to the nurse about the formula shortage that I completely forgot to ask what my son's weight was at his first appointment. He weighed 7lbs 7oz at birth and only wore N size for about a week. Size 1's still fit him well at almost 6 weeks but I decided to order a giant box of size 2 and just finish what he has left of the 1's bc I'm fairly certain he won't be in them for much longer.

The newborn sizes seem to be leaving red Marks on my baby's thighs but then the size ones still seem too big

I would try size 1 and see if they leave red marks, if not, that might be the better size.
