Wow, this has always been one of most cherished songs I’ve ever heard. I might sound lame, but it literally would send chills down my spine sometimes when I would hear it. I hadn’t heard about the inspiration to this song, but OMG, I’m tearing up hearing about how AK who didn’t even know Aaleeyah personally, felt such a deep connection to her loss and was so inspired to write this one night after she heard. Such a beautiful song that captures the essence of true love, the ephemeral nature of life, the suffering and joy all in one, what it truly means to live and what to live for. And to top it off she took a basic I - ii- iii- IV progression and wove an ornate tapestry of sound which encapsulates life and love itself, distilling it from the ubiquitous materialism into a simple yet powerfully true meaning. I’m in awe, almost like hearing the song for the first time again. I can’t thank you enough Mrs. Keys, a true artist, she doesn’t just entertain, she moves you to deeply feel something very real, and that is as priceless as the “you” in this song.

I started playing piano just under a year ago as you were one of my most inspiration‘s to start this however I am 42 and I have had RP all my life which is a retinal disease I am now losing my vision and my instructor dropped me and I love losing everything I love to do because everything I love to do requires eyesight I still have some site remaining and I practice 6 to 7 hours a day however unfortunately there is no instructor that is willing to teach someone in my condition I wish I could see your hands however I am listening closely to what you were saying and applying everything I can to try to duplicate the beautiful, inspiring sound you put out. I will not give up on the piano I will succeedNo matter how many times they tell me I can’t I’m going to continue to practice all day every day thank you four just being someone who understands that playing instrument can bring a happiness someone has never felt before and I wouldn’t have known about it until I heard about you.

I remember seeing Alicia Keys for the time ever, on a so so def show, when she was 15 years old, braids in the hair, playing little drummer boy. I fell in love with her, I fell in love with music. I was 16 at the time.
