I don't know much Korean, but I was fairly certain that that wasn't Korean. Especially when I’ve played games (specifically Project Moon games) with Korean VA and they just have this… *_serious mystical_* tone that I love. I don't know why and it might be just me, but while Japanese voices have a professional tone, Korean just felt mystical (in a magical way) for some reason.

I'm still surprised that A-1 picked this up, the webnovel and webtoon community always assumes the korean stories aren't going to be as appealing to japanese audiences. For context, this setting is pretty popular for manhwa (a Korean analogue of manga) where Earth begins manifesting dungeon portals for monsters to cross over, human weapons do zero damage, and certain people awaken superpowers (usually fantasy themed) and have to do things the medievil way. It's basically the Korean version of the Isekai trend in Japan, but the issue is that some stories tend to paint Japan in a bad light as a trope and are kinda weird with China, which might be leftover cultural history from the early 20th century in action.

Solo leveling was just another copy and got lucky by being picked up first and the artist died while making it so no other manwha could get its art aswell. Ur giving solo leveling too much credit. Pandemic was starting so solo leveling got very populair and together with that manwha itself got populair. I reccomended solo leveling to a friend of mine who likes manwha and he dropped it 💀 to read other power fantasy manwha, That should tell you enough. The fact that you don't know about light novel shows u shouldn't just be spewing random bullshit. You expect power battle necromancer manwha's to just suddenly pop up because of solo levelings peak? It was actually at first a webnovel that got turned into a webtoon, but the illustrator (Dubu) sadly died, before he was able to finish adapting it. The story itself got fully completed though and is fantastic at just generating hype. I really recommend the webtoon, although after watching the first season, because I couldn't stop thinking about how much better the art looked.

yea just like manga, a lot of manhwa artist basically work themselves to death (sometimes literally.) and it sucks to see especially because a lot of times they are just doing art for the project and not the creator/writer so they have to take multiple gigs all at the same time.

@@humanoidfrog4645 That is what they were first published as. Because they were first published *on the internet.* Hell, Kakao Page, where the the webtoon was first published, calls them webtoons. Prefer to call them manwha and light novel all you want, but if you're saying that "webtoon"/"webnovel" are wrong, that's just incorrect. It's good that you could still fully enjoy it, I didn't though and it's possible that it could affect her enjoyment as well, so I mentioned it. And *I* wouldn't say the animation is 10/10, but that's just because we had a lot of quite insane animation by now. Sidenote: If anything, I'd rather call the printed version just a novel, because all the originally japanese light novels I've read had illustrations in them every now and then and I do see that as one of the distinguishing things (also I got it in hardback and it just feels different).

WOO Let's go, I've been waiting for this show since forever. *NO SPOILERS* (just what I liked in comparison to the material is adapted) I love the way they open this episode with the Jeju island raid flashback, makes the threat of it more intense I loved the animation over all, pacing was great, and it was basically adapted page for page, panel for panel and I love that. The artstyle is spot on and perfect for Solo Leveling And I love the added scenes with the bigger outside world of the hunters association I'm just so excited to see how the show does the manwha justice I know you'll love it Alicia. Love your content.

this is known as one of the best manwha in existence for a reason, and us fans have been waiting for so damn long to see it come to life. the studio that made this is A1 Pictures, the same legends that made Sword Art Online, Darling in the Franxx, Love is War, etc. they've made some absolute classics, and this one is no doubt going to go down as one of their greatest projects also i love how the SECOND anyone reacting sees the Statues of the Cartenon they immediately just go "Ah well we're fucked" like, we ALL know what a Boss room looks like that shit aint fooling NOBODY LMAO

Some interesting details regarding the worldbuilding of the series. - Lower Ranks, like E and D tend to be so poor, they don't make any impressive income and cannot afford anything beyond some very basic weapons, so these guys tend to show up in just street cloths. C Ranks tend to make enough to afford SOME gear, so they will be in a combination of street cloths... and maybe some gauntlets or shoulder plates or something. B and A Ranks make some stupid levels of money and make enough to be fully decked out in fancy gear. S Ranks are also super fancy dressed, but are also powerful enough that some don't even seem to wear cool gear. So the more "Fantasy RPG" a character looks, likely the higher their Rank. - While most Hunters seem to get "Classes" that fit them, some people get power and Classes that don't really match themselves. You could find someone powerful enough to be S Rank and they are too scared to actually be a Hunter, and you could find someone who was a professional Martial Artist before gaining their power, only to end up as a Healer, where their "Martial Arts" are effectively useless because Healer stats don't translate well to fighting ability. Also, over 90% of hunters seem to have very Basic Classes, like Healer, Mage, Warrior, Rogue and Tank, but some random people seem to have more specialized, unique classes, and some people even have very Unique "Skills" that are not normally associated with the Class they have, like there is one guy who can turn gigantic, or you could find a "Mage" who gets a "Stealth" skill, which is something more associated with "Rogue" like Classes. The Anime won't likely actually go out of it's way to inform the viewers of this, so the significance would be easily missed.

No Spoilers - Explanation details they skipped over from the manhwa/comic to fit into anime form. 1) When you awaken, whatever power rating & type your magic awakens to is it. If you are a D class warrior, you can't be a wizard, or a healer, or ranged. No matter what, your body can only support the "D" level amount of magical energy, so you can only use weapons & amours of the D class as a max also. This is the hard limit of awakening. For someone to "just barely" be an "E" class, jinwoo can only barely use the weakest weapons since the magical energy in his body is so low. (there is more to this subject, but that would be spoiler territory) 2) A second dungeon entrance is a rare occurrence but it has happened before. It should have made the authorities who check the dungeons energy levels - to assign its danger levels - see higher energy, even if they didn't know where the entrance was. The fact that the authorities saw this as a level D dungeon, and it never changed makes this second dungeon still D ranked. (again, there is more to the explanation, but spoilers)

Some clarification on some characters' actions. I think this was info given in the WN, not the WC. The reason some of the Hunters in the dungeon didnt think it would be bad to go into the double dungeon is because the dungeon ranking system is based on scaling the magical energy coming out of it. The dungeon was scaled to be D rank, and they assumed the double dungeon was part of the scaling, as is normal.

(ignore my comment if you don't want light spoilers) a short review of this manhwa: In a world where powers and dungeons appeared simultaneously, our protagonist, initially weak, turned to hunting monsters for money to support his ill mother and high school sister. The mother and sister are basically never in the story, which makes them seem more like an excuse for why he has to go hunt, even though he is still weak at this point in time. The arrival of a second power-up, let's call it 'cheat code through life,' changed him. Shortly after that, a self-defense incident in a dungeon showcased his weak-willed nature, altering his personality. Even though I can see how killing a human can make you traumatized, I don't understand why he turned to the cold-blooded personality when it was self-defense (not to mention, he defended a innocent human in this incident). The power-up, delivered by a mysterious system, lacks a clear origin, making it feel detached from the character. The system's no-risk approach to strength, along with situations made to make the main character look good, makes it seem like success comes to him without much effort. Other characters seem mere props to elevate his image, creating a narrative where everything falls into his lap without genuine struggle or growth. It's irritating how every event or situation revolves around everyone going, 'Wow, who's this guy?' It's not really advancing the story, just focusing on an arrogant character with no backbone getting a power-up handed to him, treating everyone else like props. You just need to know about MMO RPGs, and anyone could become as strong as him using that system. If luck wasn't a issue, even I could do it, making it seem incredibly simple to get powerful. There's no struggle in his training because fatigue is practically eliminated for him. I really like the Artstyle and monster designs. If you like a manhwa with good looking artstyle with whatever i described above, go for it. I hope the Anime is not like that.

The studio that picked up Solo Leveling is A-1 Pictures, same studio as Sword Art Online, I think they will deliver a lot on this anime, since their SAO Alicization project was beautiful. As for the score for the series, it is done by our man himself Hiroyuki Sawano, which you should already be familiar with from the entire AOT Seasons 1-3 score and a lot of participation on the MAPPA seasons score. As for the language, despite the series being originally Korean, the original audio for this anime is still Japanese, as all production was done by the Japanese studio A-1 Pictures.

23:02 I'm really happy to see Yoo Jin-Ho and Han Song-Yi in the first episode. My hope for this anime was that they'd flesh out some of the side characters that get forgotten in the light novel and manhwa adaptations. You've already watched episode 2, so you know that Song-Yi is friends with Sung Jinah (the MC's sister), but in the light novel there was only a single line implying that the two knew each other and might be friends, but they never had a scene together, and the manhwa didn't do much better.

Solo Leveling is so good, I definitely recommend the manhwa, it is what I like to call a Gate/Portal Story which is a genre that’s really popular in S.Korea media, along with Dungeon Fantasy where towers appear in our world and awoken need to conquer them to save humanity.
