Yeah I didn't catch what she meant by that until Aura started talking about how Frieren only showed up 80 years ago or so. That's when it clicked; another deception to help sell the "low mana" lie. A thousand year old elf with low mana would be suspicious, but one that's only lived for a hundred years? Well Aura was fooled pretty easily.

Flamme didn't tell her to live in obscurity so her name would live on once she defeated the demon king. She tells her to do this so the demons don't see Frieren coming. If she has lived in obscurity until she is ready to take on the demon king challenge then every demon the party comes across will assume Frieren is some weak nobody mage.

I will the demon's advocate, literally, and say that Aura was not, by any means, weak. She was one of the Seven Sages of Destruction, and you have to be very powerful to get that rank. And even when she was brainwashed by her own magic, she was still conscious and even tried to resist, meaning that she was strong-willed. But of course she would lose to someone that's two times older than her.

Does it matter how big the magic difference between the winner and the loser to their ability to resist? Or not? Because for her it was a risk to have soldiers that can resist, but we know that she always seems to have TOO much mana compared to her opponent, but STILL they have resisted before, and she saw it an enough of a threat so she started cutting their heads. In that case, she is VARY weak, since even nearly-magicless knights have been able to resist, so it has nothing to do with how much magic you have, but your will, while she wasn't able to resist much, only slow down a little.

Not sure if its ever mentioned, but i love how the architecture, technology, and clothing is different during the Flamme flashbacks. Her robe isn't just for character design, its literally what everyone is wearing. Their using scrolls instead of books. The buildings are straight out of Greece. I have no doubts that if it was easier to do, they would have the language or speech patterns be different as well.

It's also so dismissive. Frieren didn't have to lift a finger against Aura. She did some dodging, cast dispell magic once, and stood around having a chat. It's "You're a demon general, and you're still not worth my effort." Then, when Aura is controlled, Frieren's KYS is yet another dismissal: "You're not even worth keeping alive as a slave"

Yeah, Frieren tries to be an ice queen but every now and then she displays heavilly emotive behaviour through subtle gestures, like poetic justice, quoting her friends or blasting that ghost monster a few episodes ago (i really like this one, her combat style revolves around using the least ammount of magic possible to end every fight as fast as possible but when the monster mimmicks Himmel she just nukes 5 football stadiums worth of land in his direction)

Frieren did say she wasnt gonna show mercy last episode. So her going Savage mode this episode isnt a surprise. I love how we got more flashback than fight this episode. Mother Flamme gave frieren 4 things 1. Mana supression technique 2. Combat spells and skill 3. Flower field magic 4. The orignial desire for strange spells

@@gagecoalbrace3 it looked like Flamme wore them as pierced earrings. Frieren seem to be wearing clip-on earrings. Also, Flames necklace matches the earring. Frieren might be wearing Flamme's jewelry, or maybe there was a jeweler making those a thousand years ago. And Frieren bought a set because they reminded her of Flamme.

God the memes surrounding this episode were great. Also the outrage that Frieren had Aura off herself instead of keeping her around as a cute demon waifu was particularly funny. But what I liked is the aspect that Frieren's lived her entire life as a nomad avoiding making a name for herself. She conceals her immense mana because if any demon realized how strong she actually was every single one would flee. Instead, since she conceals it she lures them into a false sense of security and kills them. Since none survived their encounters with her nobody knew her name which is why Aura was saying "she first appeared 80 years ago." The way Frieren dealt with Aura makes complete sense as well. With the scales effectively putting Aura under Frieren's control there was no real reason Frieren had to deal the final blow herself.

I mean, not keeping someone as strong and connected as Aura on her side is a massive tactical loss It only makes sense when you realize that having her around would be a threat to Frieren's anonymity- her biggest trump card against the remaining demons

@@Lazypackmule regardless, they don't need an enslaved demon following them around. Anything that Aura could take down, Frieren could solo. Not to mention traveling with a demon could cause more trouble for them down the line even if Aura was forced to follow all of their commands. Better to kill her than to potentially complicate things down the line

It'd be like having a 'roided up lion that's trained by way of wishing with a Monkey's Paw; it will fuck shit up huge given the barest mistake. She'd have to precisely micromanage every action the demon is tasked with in order to prevent them from doing warped shit- for the rest of the demons CENTURIES long lifespan. Frieren did nothing wrong here.

@@Lazypackmule Alas the spell to control people is imperfect and Aura would've been a threat even under the mind control. She got around this by decapitating people at once and keeping them as mindless puppets. Frieren was never interested in such. Also the author wasn't interested to keep around a cute looking mass murderer as part of the main cast.

This was probably one of the coldest moments I've ever seen in a show. Just the sheer calm and steadiness with which Frieren says, "Aura, Kill yourself." No emotion, no inflection, no repetition, just a single flat order. She's already won and could have killed aura in any number of ways, but that was nothing short of rubbing Aura's face in it for her final moments.

Demon King is not racist imo, he is rational analysing. There is no good/evil in the world for demons, only survival. The demon king goes for the biggest threat=elves. They are longliving like demons and have strong mages, what makes them natural competitors to demons in the mage game. By killing them only humans, dwarfs are left. They have exeptionell mages like Flamme here and there, but you saw how powerful Aura really is if you dont have a mana monster like Frieren to kill her. Aura can outlife all humans and dwarfs with her mana pool.

Yup, freiren is more racist towards demons, but for a good reason. They're basically psychopaths that have no reason to learn empathy since they can live by themselves since birth, anf thus, they grow and seeing things in q "logical" manner, which is kinda problematic to all other life. As we saw with that young demon a few episodes back, they might find solutions to problems that include killing other people, and have no problem with it, they can even live without eating humans, but they chose to if they're hungry. So okt of need for survival, humans would eradicate every last one of them, the same way they're trying to eradicate most dangerous races them, like elves, which is the reason why elves are nearly extinct by now

He didn't need to think about that. His chief advisor was a Demon with future vision magic. He didn't know for sure but he knew enough about the threat from the elves. He only went down when Humanity got a Hero could counter his power with his own vision. The man titled Humanity's Strongest took him and 3 sages down in an epic 1 vs 8 battle. He went down knowing he paved the way for next hero to kill the Demon King, Himmel the Hero

i dont know if it is explained somewhere or even if it is the case, but by my understanding, Frieren tells Aura to off herself not because it is more brutal or demeaning or anything like that. But because she doesnt want to use magic to kill if possible. If you notice it anytime she is to use a spell to do harm, she tries to either do it quickly or like ask Fern to do it or Stark etc. I think the scene between her and her master where she is asking if Flame regrets teaching her her magic, because it is used for revenge and killing, and then Flame immediately proceeds to tell Frieren about her favorite spell and that is a spell that creates life (flowers) , all that is a way to try and "cure" Frieren's heart from hate and revenge. to remind her her love for magic. and i suspect this is also a big reason as to why frieren collects spells that seem very useless.

Huntermad is right, she usually has Fern or Stark do it because she wants to help them grow which is why she never helps them in their battles she has zero qualms using magic to absolutely butcher demons, she could’ve killed that demon boy in the earlier episode but opted to cut off both of his arms and start strangling him first before blowing his face off, she absolutely could’ve just instantly decapitated him

But even if they underestimate them, they need the strength to use that gap to finish it if they are indeed weaker. Being underestimated doesn’t necessarily mean your stronger then them, but that your stronger then they estimated you to be. So it’s still possible to be underestimated and still be weaker. Though I doubt this applies to Frieren as she’s an absolute beast

When I first watched this anime I wondered why the city that Frieren and her master walk through looks like ancient Rome. Time flies so fast for an elf. Frieren could have just nuked the entire army in one attack, but PURPOSEFULLY provoked Aura specifically for that moment just to dunk on her. She may be baby, but she her bloodlust towards demons is scary. Edit: Yes, I know that she was also holding back to not damage the bodies as well. Still, she could have instant-killed Aura with a direct attack or dispelled way more soldiers at a time than she did. Fireren was essentially pulling her punches two-fold to drag the fight out.

Not really. She didn't blow up the army because Himmel hates that. She probably did that the last time they fought Aura and Himmel seems to have scolded her. Himmel hates it because the army consists of headless of bodies of the dead. They should be respected.

Aura literally has the army specifically as shields for her, and to exhaust frieren magic. And while she wouldn't have lost any significant amount of magic, she wouldn't have been able to release enough soldiers to attack aura before aura activated her magic, nor would she have been able to attack her without harming the soldiers bodies. If it was past frieren, she might have just devastated the area and finished off aura in seconds.

...did you miss or just refuse to care about the part that Frieren literally said if Aura used her army she'd be in trouble. Like it seems her entire plan relied on Aura using her spell early because she knew she couldn't win in a drawn out fight or at the very least it'd be very close , hell even though Aura could see Frieren's mana was "low" she still had some of her army exhaust her.

@@brodybenton-haskins9720 what? Her mana was NOT low, AURA thought it was, which is why she wanted to exhaust it to make sure it was guaranteed she wins. And frieren would NOT have lost or had a "close fight" because of rhe army, it would only take longer. Because she CAN release all of the soldiers, it would just take a while, and i am not sure of aura has and significant offensive magic other than her soldiers, but if she does, it would be a little troubling for frieren, if just to make it harder to release enough soldiers to create an opening to attack aura.

Stuff like this is why Flamme told Frieren not to put her name in the history books until the Demon King is defeated, as a another way to fool the demons. That's why Aura was like ''She only appeared in public records 80 years ago'', as Aura thought Frieren wasn't very old.

I hope it is confirmed in a later season (avoiding the manga in this case cause I sure don't wanna spoil this anime for myself) that there was some sort of prophecy told to the Demon King that an elf would kill him. So he ordered his armies to kill every elf they encounter to prevent it. But it was self fulfilling because it got Frieren's village wiped out, giving her huge motivation, and got her recruited by the sneakiest milf in history.

Yep one of the big reasons Frieren and her party had a higher chance of success is because she lived in obscurity until it was the right time. If the demon king or demonkind in general had heard word of a powerful mage constantly suppressing her mana. They would be far more cautious with even weaker mages. I imagine the demon king would have ordered a lot stronger demons to seek them out. Don't forget that Qual had to be sealed as he was too strong for their group until his magic was fully understood and countered. If say word had gotten out then Qual teamed up with say Aura or one of the other sages it might have all ended in disaster.

12:00 - The reason she was told to live in obscurity is so she had one more way to make the demons underestimate her. For instance, if she had been making a name for herself before defeating the demon king, Aura would have been more cautious instead of assuming Frieren was a relative nobody.

So in my mind there is a parallel to be drawn from this anime and JJK in terms of power scaling. The entire world changed when Gojo was born, because he was so ridiculously powerful, many enemies and curses kept to the shadows so he wouldn't end them. Him flaunting his power all over forced a shift in power scaling of everyone, they all wanted to become more powerful to defeat him. This led to a lot of things being so powerful any other sorcerer was basically useless against them, like Jogo, Dagon, Mahito, and Hanami only really being able to be defeated by Gojo, Yuji, or Sukuna, and Yuji needed help with basically every fight. Frieren on the other hand had a boss ass bitch as her mentor, where Gojo really didn't have anyone. She was taught to suppress her mana to deceive demons, but also so the Demon King wouldn't know she was becoming powerful enough to defeat him. This in a way kept demons power as high as any other demon, instead of them trying to keep up to and match or exceed Frieren. Had she made herself known just willy nilly hunting demons they would all know her and seek to become more powerful, but in her suppression came a kind of idleness. Obviously we see Aura has become more powerful, but only powerful enough to use her ability on normal humans, who would never be able to compete with her. Frieren's obscurity is not only a solid story component, but a power scaling choice. Also, side note, demons leadership is basically Orks, who ever is the most powerful is da boss, changes in leadership follow changes in who is the strongest.

Flamme told Frieren to never leave her name in history not because it would be a better way to be remembered after killing the demon king, instead she said it because that would left Frieren as an "elf mage that just recently appeared, without any amazing feat" so the demons would underestimate her.

The whole bit about not making a name for herself was to keep demons from knowing of her power before it’s too late. Once she beat the DK, it won’t matter anymore. Though, after living +1000 years in obscurity, how hard would it be to suddenly be talked about across the entire continent, eh?

The only thing I think Frieren could have done better in this episode is, instead of straight up ordering Aura to kill herself, she could have ordered her to kill every single demon she knows or can find in the order from weakest to strongest without ever harming, hurting or killing a single human, releasing all her undead human followers herself, and once she doesn't know and can't find other demons, killing herself if she haven't died by that point yet. That way, she would have still made Aura kill herself, but she would kill a lot more demons than just her still releasing the undead humans from her control.
