Humorously, 'Ranking of Kings' did the exact opposite; with how they initially presented Queen Hiling as a villainous stepmother who hates (or at least prefers Prince Daida over him) Prince Bojji. And then she jumps out of a tall tower without hesitation to protect Bojji, and suddenly, the audience's perspective of her is completely flipped. Compare that to Dio, who was more than happy to incinerate Jonathan's dog out of disproportionate retribution.

Since this is the start of the journey, I'll try to reference the many music and other references araki put in his story writing (mostly music) for each of the episodes you watched ^_^ Dio's name partially comes from the heavy metal singer Ronnie James Dio, founder of the supergroup "Dio" Erina Pendleton's name is possibly a reference to the Clive Nolan band Pendragon The concept designs of Jonathan and Dio came from Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger, whose films were popular at the time. Jonathan is vaguely influenced by Kenshiro from Fist of the North Star. Dios surname is possibly named after the actor Marlon Brando. The name Jonathan came from a local restaurant called Jonathan's that Araki used to visit frequently.
@SaviTheGamer Жыл бұрын
oh and Dio means "God" in Italian, lol, but that might be just a coincidence.
@a442 Жыл бұрын
Erina's first name is a reference to the song Eleanor Rigby from The Beatles Also Jonathan's name doesn't come from the restaurant as Araki said in an interview from the book JoJoveller Q: You chose the name "Jonathan Joestar" because your meetings were held at the family restaurant "Jonathan's", right? Araki: What? Jonathan's? (Laughs) Kabashima: Didn't you want to make the name "JoJo"? Araki: I wanted to have an alliterative name like Steven Spielberg, so the acronym would look like J.J. or S.S. But the family restaurant we had our first meeting at was Denny's. It wasn't until later that we started going to Jonathan's. Q: No no, you've mentioned it was Jonathan's elsewhere (laughs). You stated, "Because it was at Jonathan's." Araki: Ohh, that was more of a "Sure, Let's go with that" type of answer. (laughs) Kabashima: It's better for these things to be interesting, right? (laughs). Araki-san likes legends. He thinks it's better for it to be interesting than for it be a fact. That's likely the root of this. Araki: Legends are a requirement for the horror genre. Q: Then the name "Jonathan" is...? Araki: It was just to make the J.J. alliteration. I didn't really take it from anywhere in particular. Kabashima: It seems the origin of Jonathan has also become something like an urban legend, but it was definitely a Denny's at first, and then we switched to having meetings at Jonathan's somewhere during the middle of serialization. It was convenient because it was close to Araki-san's workplace at the time.

Interesting thing with how Araki wrote Dio for this first part of JoJo's, childhood trauma and abuse has been shown to link towards sociopathic, narcissistic, and anger management issues later on in life. You may hate how Dio is acting, and for good reason, but while exaggerated, this is a pretty realistic outcome for someone suffering from childhood abuse and is unable to get the help needed. And since this takes place in the 1880s, mental health treatment was non-existent.

I love how Alicia's like "dio's pretty justified" and then she sees Dio kick the dog AND everything he does with Erina. At least she gave him her own "fuck you" with the mud thing. JoJo starts off kinda....not the best, but as you've seen in the second episode now (judging from your description) he gets a HUGE glow up in both character and build. And yeah, if there's one thing about JoJo that can be divisive, it's its lack of subtlety most of the time. At least in terms of villains. But as long as you don't let it bother ya, it can be VERY cathartic seeing the heroes beat the shit out of the absolute scumbags that exist in this series. also, something removed from the manga: the butler DOES open the oven....allowing the viewers to SEE danny's burning body as it jumps out of the oven. That's probably why they removed it. Dio is popular mainly BECAUSE he's such an over the top, unsubtle BASTARD. Like people find him to be entrtaining because he's just so OUT THERE in terms of jsut how NASTY he is, while somehow remaining kinda charismatic in spite of that. He looks down on EVERYONE because he wants to be better than literally EVERYONE WHO EXISTS and so he sees their lives as trash to be sacrificed in his name, to prove that he IS better and he doesn't care WHAT he does to get there, no matter how vile and petty. He's jsut a classic, classic ASSHOLE who exists to get punched in the shnozz. Also in the flashback I belevie Dio and JoJo are like....12? or something?

To let you know the first season this is NOT representative of the whole show. This, is beautiful. Ant's observation of them all being JoJo is also cool because its exactly what makes it so special. Other franchises with the MC's name in the title of course treat them with extra care but with JoJo, since its about a family and not the one character, you can focus on multiple characters, letting you end one character's story and start a new one. TL:DR they're doing Boruto correctly.

To put it into context, Dio is basically the Green Goblin. Man has a god complex the size of the sun and sees other people as pawns for his own success. He feels the world owes him for his suffering as a child and lashes out at everything and everyone around him. And when Dio/Green Goblin finally meets their adversary Jojo/Spider-Man, it's not just about power anymore. At some point, it starts to become a sick game of breaking the hero mentally and physically.
@ero-senninsama1734 Жыл бұрын
Nice reaction! A few things to note. A few things from the manga were omitted and/or censored. (Probably due to having to do everything in very little episodes. Idk maybe they thought a show from the 80s that just now got an anime would probably flop) One of the things that got censored was that the butler actually opened the furnace when he heard the banging quite fast actually, but what happened next was very graphic so they just made the butler freeze up and leave it at that. Jojo can get very graphic, but its also very cool, not just to keep you on your toes and do stuff that we know as anime tropes now, but it was actually a first timer in many things way back in the 80s, when it first started. The endings are actually real songs that are part of the author's playlist (Name is Hirohiko Araki) I know you want to see the flamboyant stuff, but just give it time. It takes a bit of time, but you will for sure notices the show slowly get "gayer and gayer", lol. The people who make the "fanart" *wink wink, nudge nudge* know that. And well, yeah Dio is very over the top, but hey, even if its exaggerated, Im sure you know that you dont even have to know some people for them to want to tear down your life, for the silliest reasons.

Ah wanted to also comment an early 'rule' of jojo's your going to have to get used to with the series. "Talking is a free action". Basically in Jojos, no matter if say a bomb is gonna explode in 3 seconds, a character still has time to think out his thoughts to monologue for 2 mins before the bomb will blow. Usually when this happens in other series it can be off putting, but in Jojo's it is the only series i watched that can get away of it because of out out of pocket the series already is and bizarre. Its my favourite anime and cant wait for you guys to slowly fall in love with it as well. As some people have said already, Part 1 is considered the 'worst' the the series, but this doesnt mean it is bad. Its story writing is very 'old' but sets a solid base for the story of this series to push off against. Most of the tropes you may see from other animes you will see in this show was actually originally invented/originated from Jojo's. It is a grandfather to anime basically, just like how Dragon Ball is a grandfather to most shonen action series like Bleach, Naruto and One Piece. Also alot of memes will be recogniseable form Jojo's, such as the "To be continued" you recognised at the end lol. Jojo is a bank of memes that you will sure find out how surprising how many jojo memes you recognise. Also reason why a common phrase from jojo fans is "Is that a Jojo's reference?" to ALOT of things.

If it helps to contextualize why it's written the way it is, the original manga at this time was written in the '80s and the first part draws heavily on stuff like Fist of the North Star as well as Western action movies of the time. Araki was still very much trying to figure out who he was as a writer back then. The series very much reflects that evolution and doesn't take long to become a very different animal.

Dio is an example that not all villains are complex and sympathetic. Some are just 100% pieces of shit with zero redeeming qualities.

Liking dio as a character is a lot different than liking him as a person. Dio is a fun character because he is pure evil down to the bone. Other villains in the story have great and interesting motivations, but dio just fucking sucks.

"He yelled at you, don't like him". It works for Jotaro. Also Dio has no reason for his evil. He just simply is evil. The creator himself wanted Dio to be as hated as possible as a villain. That's why he kicks dogs, fights dirty, assaults women, etc. Ain't no Steven Universe song gonna fix this villain. People are fans of Dio because he is a villain amongst villains. Dude makes Frieza look sane amd merciful.

23:25 in the manga, the burning dog actually jumps out of the furnace after he said that. It was too graphic to be shown so they cut it.

It's funny to rewatch episode 1 reaction, when they hated everyone and wanted everyone dies, and look at them now: "I don't want anyone die" part 4 "bites the dust"
@temocred7400 Жыл бұрын
I don't think anyone actually likes Dio in the literal sense. Dude's an absolute villain in every sense of the word and he makes it very easy to root for Jojo when he beats his ass. At the very least that was my driving force to watching Jojo, just wanting to see Jonathan beating his ass and overcoming him. Lotta people say that part 1 is slow or bad but I think Dio carries part 1 because you just wanna see him eat it so bad.
@sarafontanini7051 Жыл бұрын
I say Phantom Blood isn't BAD, jsut VERY fast paced to a fault and not featuring the best fights in the franchise, mainly because its way more...standard than later (but that'd be spoilers if I said too much)

JoJo's uses songs from the west for its endings instead of making new songs. It's because Araki, the mangaka, loved western culture so much that he names so many people, powers, etc. After songs and bands he likes.

Just wanted to comment to say that the Netflix subs tho are good, they will not feature the musical references that is prevalent in names in future 'Parts'. For Part 1, it is relatively fine (except for 1 name change but it isnt too 'big'). But once you reach future Parts it becomes more and more prevalent
@UberWraith Жыл бұрын
Luckily the Japanese dub let's you know that the names are, in fact, quite different from what it is written. Although there is a lot of 'Engrish' you can quite hear 'Polnareff' or 'Aerosmith' for example.

So, the thing to keep in mind is that JoJo's as a series thrives on being campy and over the top, that's the selling point.subtlety is not just thrown out of the window, it is sent into the shadow realm then into the abyss, and then into a black hole. Also early parts are written during 80s, so it does feel dated a bit, araki was still finding the balance between camp and series stuff. Part one feels like it is unintentionally campy most of the times and it has a charm to it, but part 2 onwards the perfects on what direction it wants to go and it's soo good. Also, as the series progresses, we also see araki's journey as a writer and how he evolves to the point that everything becomes so nuanced and interesting while also retaining it's trademark campy overthe top fun. It's so unique

Started this show recently too and honestly that's the reason why I liked Jojo, I wasn't expecting anything but memes and it's so disgustingly over the top that it makes me laugh so the more evil Dio is for no fucking reason, the happier I am. Yeah, the author likes to make it very clear that a character is evil to the core by having them kill a dog. Since, for the author, there is no bigger expression of evil than hurting animals, especially dogs XD.
