Thanks for supporting me on Patreon: www.patreon.co... The Alico Summits are good old-fashioned full-grain leather hiking boots made by the Italian company Alico. They feature Norwegian Welt construction and quality materials throughout. In this video I explain the main features of these hikers, share my expectations of ownership, and give my impressions of how these boots have started breaking in. I expect they'll be well worth the time to break in, so stay tuned for updates!

Thank you for making this video and putting a spotlight on a truly wonderful crafted boot. I own two pairs of summits, ordered a pair 6 years ago, and like them so much I bought a second pair a month later with a coupon given to me with the first pair. One pair is barely broken in on standby in my closet, used for casual events. The other pair are being used for what they're meant to do, stomping waffle patterns up a mountain. After six years of wearing mine mostly on hard-packed dirt and gravel, I would say the Vibram soles are about 50% worn. I would recommend ordering obenauf's leather oil, and apply two light coats to help with the long break in process, and protection against water. I would recommend not over saturating with obenauf's leather oil, because you do not want the leather to become too soft and lose its natural support. Due to the Norwegian welt Construction and lack of seems due to a single piece leather upper I've had zero leaking issues. Just a warning there a bear to break in, but so worth it afterwards. The white calfskin fully lining the boot pretty much eliminates any hotspots on your foot. Using Peter Limmer hiking boots as the gold standard, at a rating of 10, I would give these a solid 9. If you don't mine a heavier boot that will take some time to break in, I would highly recommend these boots.

I've used my Alico boots for over two years, hiking twice a month, and through the Ohiopyle Cucumber Run frequently, and all the breaking in is done, and waterproofing and comfort is there. Excellent boots for day hiking for sure, should last easily for years, two years so far for me.

Bought a pair 3 yrs ago. Broke them in by wearing them to work for 6 months. No blisters but ankles were a bit sore the first week. Treated them with SnoSeal . Past two winters I've worn them hiking and clearing snow. The water test was hiking out of a ravine for 45 minutes in 3-4" water on a shale bottomed stream last February . Feet were always dry. Tough boots but not light. If you can't handle a heavy boot look elsewhere but if you can, these are near indestructible.

I have 2 pairs of Italian made Treemme boots triple stitched, 3.8mm, E. Gallusser Swiss leather (model 194 & 137 ) and they are without doubt the best hiking/mountain boots that I've ever owned and I've had a lot over the years, not that well known but a superb brand that I would recommend to anyone wanting bombproof mountain boots built the old fashioned way to an unbelievably high standard. Mine just showed up. Only been wearing these for 2 days. So far so good. They are slowly getting more comfy, and I can slowly feel the insole/midsole giving in to form to my foot. Once it's broken in, I intend to get a set of Running or Work boot Spenco's to really finish them off. They feel true to size, and with mine, there are ZERO flaws in the leather or construction. Extremely well made. I highly recommend them. Not for the weak though. These are old school, and require time/patience and work to properly get them broken in.

So the soles needed cushioning!
@Condor1970
@Condor1970 8 жыл бұрын
Believe it or not, I could have gotten by with the supplied insoles, but only with tons of break in. As they break in, the sweat from your foot will soften the leather inner sole and mid sole to form fit the bottom of your foot. For most people, this may be fine. However, I have some fairly high arches, and need a little more support than any natural forming of the inner/mid sole will provide. So, I wore the boots for a few weeks with the provided insoles, then upgraded. As I noticed the boots breaking in and softening up, I then upgraded the insoles with a set of Spenco Walker/Runner insoles, because they have more arch support, more cushioning, and come in wide widths to fit my boots. I ordered the 11.5EE boot, and 10-11W insole. The boots are true to fit, and have ample room in the toe box, which I really like. After I installed the Spenco insoles, their thickness took up a little room in the boot to snug the fit, but are not over tight, and are now just about perfect to wear around all day long. If you want a good heavily cushioned insole with better arch support, I really do recommend the Spenco Walker/Runner insoles. For a mere $18 on Amazon, they are a great addition to this very high quality boot.

Been wearing Alico boots for nearly 25 yrs, both Summits and Guides. Before that Raichle and Vasque so very old school hiking boots for me. They run true to size but a bit narrow and be sure to leave room for a thick wool sock. Yes they are somewhat more expensive, heavier and take longer to break-in properly but better in so many ways vs modern synthetic boots. You get use to the weight, I’ve done 10 miles in them no problem. Great ankle support and leather breaths much better. Even with Gortex Synthetic boots seem to not breath as well. Take care of the Alico’s and you can get 10-12 years out of a pair easy. I wear mine everyday like shoes so I had to resole my last pair but it was worth it. On only my 2nd pair in 25 years so that’s pretty good. Danner makes good stuff also, their USA made boots while pricey are excellent. My wife loves Danner boots because they make true women’s fit. With proper care all these old school full leather hiking boots will last a lifetime. Buy quality first, cry once. Oh and Sierra Trading Co. is a great company to deal with. They’re about the only place I found that sell Alico

I have been using the Alico Summits for regular hiking and mountaineering in the Andes for over 10 years. They fit true to my standard American foot size (U.S. 12-D). I immediately replaced the factory insoles with a pair of Superfeet. Beyond replacing the laces and regular conditioning (mink oil) and weatherproofing (beeswax), they have not been serviced (though will be replacing the outsoles soon), and look great. I have not experienced hotspots, nor has water found my feet. The Vibram outsoles work well in my conditions -- bunch grass, scree and massif rock -- and are predictable, so I am a fan. Personally, I find the heavier, stiffer leather mountaineering boots, such as the New Guide, too inflexible for the demands of the steep volcanoes of the northern Andes, so the lighter Summits are a nice compromise. The Alico Summit is my go-to boot when not on a glacier, when I shift to plastic (Koflachs) that provide better stiffness for crampons as well as warmth for the extreme conditions at high altitude. Following a decade, i felt it was time to share my well tested opinion of these fantastic boots...

Great video, I have the same boots. I love my Alicos. I have yet to get my feet wet while wearing them. I have had mine since 2012 and are going strong. Maintenance on these boots is easy. I use sadle soap to clean the mud off them, then let them sit overnight. I then use a good brown wax buff and ready to go. I think this year I will be getting another pair before they stop making the this style. It never fails, you find a shoe you just love and when you go back to buy another pair that shoe is no longer made. Again, great video. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the great review..I'm waiting on a pair of the Alico New Guides to arrive. I'm very excited to be going with the old school Traditional build that can be serviced and if taken care of will break in beautifully and last for years. My last pair of Asolo's were a serious let down. It's pretty sad when a $300.00 pair of boots are given a shelf life of 3 years, you have tread left, leather is broken in and in great shape but the glue and midsole are crumbling and falling apart. Going by the reviews the Alico's were the right choice for an incredibly reasonable price. Happy Hiking!!

Well constructed boots in traditional method, but unless you are a professional mountain climber, much cheaper boots using single stitched sole and vibram sole also are just as good for casual mountain trekking. The professional hiker that wrote the besteselling walkers guide to outdoor clues and signs and walked from Glasgow to London in his youth over hill and dale used a cheap pair of trainers for that extensive hike without issue.

Personally I wear a pair of Salomon Quest 4D 2 GTX boots. God what a mouthful, but I love them.
@retardno002
@retardno002 5 жыл бұрын
For light weight and performance the Quest 4D is the way to go. For some people they don't last long enough, or even if the boot itself does, the outsole / midsole definitely wears out fast. This happens for leather boots as well, except you can change the sole on welted boots, unlike the Salomons. So you can either spend $300 on a pair of well made leather boots that you can resole for cheap every year or so, or you can shell out $200 per year on Salmons. Depends on how much you hike, how much you value the light weight aspect of the Salomons, and how much money you're willing to spend on boots every year. A well broken-in leather boot that you've been wearing for 10 years is the most comfortable thing you can hike in, and even has sentimental value to some. Can't say the same thing about Salomons. Check out some videos about 20+ year old leather hiking boots and tell me that's not impressive.

I have a pair of Alico's I've worn for about ten years, walking the woods and beaches near where I live. Maintenance isn't that big a deal and it's worth the comfort of leather. They are a great all around boot. Leather boots are really difficult to find and the modern construction of a synthetic "sock" glued to a hard rubber foot bed just doesn't work for me. Gore tex is a terrible material for lining a boot, and the fact these don't have any gore tex in them was what initially attracted me to them. My only complaint is that the model I bought would be better if it came with a thicker Vibram sole, but it's easy enough to replace the sole on these things. Try to do that with injection molded space boots that most people wear.

La Sportiva Nucleo Hig GTX.

Nice boots and video! I used Obenauf's LP on my Red Wing boots, and they got pretty dark. Is there any way to lighten them up, or do I just need to give them time to dry?

Hi, I know you posted this 18 months ago but I wanted to know how these were doing? I just got a pair from Sierra Trading Post and they look great. You mention a few times about maintenance. How do you maintain these boots because I'd hate to change the color since it is so beautiful. I know I'd be brushing them off with a horsehair brush but do use any oil or cream? - Thanks!

Leonard Levy I hiked the Camino Santiago de Compostela the boots did great! They confirmed to my feet and held up great over the Pyrenees going into Spain. I used snow seal on them before I went and did great hiking during rainy days. I walked in these boots seven to ten hours a day. No blisters and great ankle protection. Good luck

+Leonard Levy they've been holding up well. I use mink oil and occasionally a brown shoe polish and the color has been pretty close.

How does a boot "approach being waterproof" (by applying waxes)? It is or it isn't. These oldstyle boots are not waterproof and never will be. They have no insulation either. Why would you go hiking/mountaineering in them? Same with the long tedious (and often painful) break-in: in the 21st century that's juts a con. The brake-in always was just bad thing, a nuisance that people simply had to put up with because there were no alternatives of reliable materials for boots. Going for this long break-in thing like it's something special is like still wanting to do farming with a scythe. Tbh there is no reason to wear boots like this in the 20/21st century unless someone has weird liking for paying extra to torture themselves.

Lithian Haim because you get a quality boot that will last for years, sometime decades. Gortex boots are just sweat boxes for my feet, and the liner inevitably breaks down. As per the waterproofness, one does not need a perfectly waterproof boot (in which case one should be wearing rubber boots) unless you plan to just stand in water. I have a pair of zamberlans that are leather with no gortex and I’ve never had wet feet in them.

have used all the modern expencive brands (Meindel, Asolo, Sorel ,Scarpa to name a few) with their mushy synthetics that fail at the worst moment and have gone back to the quality long lasting traditional boot. best move!

@@stuartensor6999 New boots that rely on PU and glues are simply unreliable and these boots are designed to be used in pretty demanding environments that you really do not want soles falling off. Love the old reliable styled Norwegian weldt boots👍
