I saw an interview with Ridley Scott when this came out. He pointed out that, at the time, the people who encountered aliens in science fiction movies tender to be either scientist/explorers or soldiers. He wanted to make a movie where ordinary people were the concerned parties - those whose experience with other living beings were thoroughly domesticated animals. His description was "truck drivers in space" - which I think fits the bill admirably.
@michaelccozens
@michaelccozens 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's a very neat step forward. Sci-fi prior to this time, like Clarke and Asimov, tended to be of the modernist, "bright shiny future", brave scientist-explorer type. Everything was nice and new and clean, everyone was brilliant and well-educated, everywhere they went was new. Be that as it may, this was about how the future would look to those who actually had to live and work in it. Much more post-modern, self-aware, and dystopic, with an emphasis on the immutable historical law that no age has been great for the great mass of people at the bottom. Management still cuts corners, and it's the poor and the workers who can't do anything about it that suffer. Tech may improve, but human nature doesn't.

My mom took me to see this in the theater when it released in 79 and I was 11 or 12. She wanted to see it but she was too scared to go alone. She said she was going to cover my eyes during the scary parts but she was so scared she forgot and covered her own eyes and I watched the whole movie. Still to this day if I ever have a nightmare it always the xenomorphs I dream about. I still love Alien and Aliens. The Xenomorphs are among the coolest, most creative and scariest aliens I've ever seen only matched by a few others like the titular Thing in John Carpenter's movie.

If you’re still having nightmares about the bugs you will absolutely melt playing as the Colonial Marine in the Aliens vs Predator games. Flamethrowers work best against the Face Huggers, and the Smartgun (with Aim Assist) against the full-sized Xenos. Trying to engage either with just the Pulse Rifle and manual aiming just makes for a lot of screaming and wasted ammo.

@@Centane It is interesting that in this movie, we normally know 20 seconds in advance that "something very bad is going to happen", and they still manage to make it scary when it does happen. The "jump scares" are typically false scares, like "it was just the cat". The only genuine jump scare I can think of that does involve the alien is near the end when we discover that it is with Ripley on the shuttle. (And even that one is not hard to predict if one knows the conventions of horror movies; OF COURSE there is a final confrontation with the monster just when everything seemed to be over.)

For me the first two are the best, you can skip alien 3, and the rest are varying quality but all watchable. Alien 3 is really the only one I would say skip, it’s just downright depressing and has some pretty bad early CGI effects. There’s some great acting and cinematography in it but that’s about it. Even the guy who directed it doesn’t like it.

Hey, Camilla! This is one of the greatest horror films of all time! You saw the original Theatrical Cut which I prefer because I feel it's paced better and lacks an unnecessary cocooning scene that contradicts the sequel. Despite preferring the Theatrical Cut for the first movie, there is ABSOLUTELY NO QUESTION that you must watch the SPECIAL EDITION of "Aliens"!!!!!!! Director Ridley Scott kept the entire cast in the dark about the famous CHESTBURSTING scene except for John Hurt. Their reactions were absolutely genuine and mirrored the audience's response! Squeamish Veronica Cartwright got sprayed by fake blood and fell over backward. They only filmed the scene twice. It remains one of the most ICONIC IN CINEMA HISTORY! The PACING is deliberately slow at the beginning to acquaint the audience with the ship's geography, to demonstrate authentic-looking space travel and maneuvers, to familiarize the audience with the crew, to establish the threat posed by the creature and to generate suspense with the mystery of the derelict craft. There's a lot of rich character humor and foreshadowing in those crew interaction scenes as well as a subtext about this future society being a corporate dystopia. "Alien" is set in the year 2122. The Swiss artist, H.R. Giger, who designed the xenomorph tapped into insectoid and reptilian features that evoke primal fear. His artwork is very bizarre, erotic and has a distinctive look called Giger-esque. The final product is an iconic movie monster that is pure NIGHTMARE FUEL! The creature's life-cycle and biology is explored throughout the series. By the way, the alien's retractable inner jaw is found in nature in a deep-sea fish! THE WEYLAND-YUTANI COMPANY is an international conglomerate involved in robotics, interstellar travel and terra-forming. They have a stake in every colony world and are basically the 22nd-century version of the British East India Company of the 17th- to 19th-centuries. They are a ruthless corporation looking to exploit or weaponize the xenomorph for profit regardless of the negative consequences. The Company is the TRUE VILLAIN of all the Alien movies. In the "AvP" films, you actually meet the company founders before their merger, Mr. Weyland and Ms. Yutani. This crew is not a group of explorers, scientists or colonists. They're just SPACE TRUCKERS hauling rocks. This was a First Contact situation they were wholly unqualified for. Hence, all the bumbling and bad judgment calls. Their chief concerns were company policy and pay inequity. Ripley was the only one with the willingness to make difficult command decisions that would have saved all their lives except for Kane's had she not been undermined by Ash. Of course, Ash was privy to a secret corporate mandate. Like most Captains, Dallas had an inherently CALM DEMEANOR. You do not want your leader freaking out in an emergency! It was also a defense mechanism. By minimizing the situation, it prevents both him and the crew from panicking. It's a 'steady does it' philosophy. You can tell he's very worried because he seeks counsel from Mother. He also acknowledges his culpability for the predicament by preventing Ripley from volunteering to go into the shafts and by shouldering that burden himself. The plan was to block off passages as he went in order to flush it out into the airlock with fire so it could be ejected into space. He accepted this task not even knowing if fire would be effective! His last act is a rather valiant gesture and I always feel bad for him despite his initial missteps. Parker is MY FAVORITE supporting character! Yaphet Kotto played him to the hilt! He's the blue collar EVERYMAN who just cares about payday and who enjoys deliberately antagonizing his superiors but ends up sacrificing himself for a fellow employee. He's also the only one who made a move on the chestburster before being stopped by Ash! Some viewers strongly believe the alien raped Lambert! This is nonsense. The PREHENSILE TAIL probably drew her closer to itself so it could mouth-punch her with the retractable jaw. Drones incapacitate victims for hosting embryos or for food. Those viewers aren't mistaken for perceiving phallic eroticism, though, as that was Scott's intent. The giant elephant-headed alien pilot of the derelict spacecraft is one of the GREAT MYSTERIES of the franchise. Was he a zoologist, a bio-warfare specialist, an exterminator, a trader in exotic organisms, a waste disposal tech or a trucker like Ripley's crew? No one knows. The prequels attempted to unsatisfyingly answer the question claiming his species designed the alien. It is revealed in the prequel "Prometheus" that the elephant head is just a helmet and you get to see the giant space jockey's actual appearance. You also see a functioning version of the derelict craft in "Prometheus". Sigourney Weaver became a FEMINIST ICON because of this movie. Ripley is one in a long line of strong female characters that have been showcased in sci-fi and fantasy dating back to Edgar Rice Burroughs' Dejah Thoris, the Princess of Mars, in 1911! There's not a single man I know who wouldn't follow Ripley into hell. "ALIEN 3" is a DIVISIVE film but it's an EXCELLENT entry in the series. It's directed by David Fincher and features Charles Dance and Charles Dutton. It's brutal, fast-paced, has some extraordinary scares and concludes the story elegantly. Please DON'T SKIP IT! Make sure you see the ASSEMBLY CUT (Special Edition with longer runtime). "Alien Resurrection" is the optional one because it's a hot mess except for one cool aquatic sequence. The ambitious prequels, "Prometheus" and "Covenant", mark Ridley Scott's return to the series but they are mostly good JUST for Michael Fassbender's performances. Scott demystifies the creature and unsatisfyingly attempts to address who the elephant-headed pilot of the derelict spacecraft was. If you're going to see the "AvP" films, then you need to acquaint yourself with the PREDATOR. The first is an action classic with Schwarzenegger. Danny Glover stars in "Predator 2" in which a link between franchises appears! Dark Horse comics ran with the crossover concept inspiring Hollywood to make two crossover films with moderately successful to excellent results. They're fun and exciting guilty pleasures with the second one, "AvP: REQUIEM", being particularly lean and mean. There is also a "PREDATORS" film by Robert Rodriguez that is definitely worth a look. The "Predator" (2018) REBOOT, however, should be avoided at all costs; it's a franchise-killer! The Alien films have a RICHER SUBTEXT while the Predator films are more ACTION FARE but they're both fun sci-fi thrillers. Below is a VIEWING ORDER and an INTERNAL CHRONOLOGY: VIEWING ORDER: Alien Aliens (Special Edition) Alien 3 (Assembly Cut) Alien Resurrection (Director's Cut) [OPTIONAL] Predator (1987) Predator 2 Predators Alien vs Predator Alien vs Predator: Requiem (Unrated) Prometheus [OPTIONAL] Covenant [OPTIONAL] INTERNAL CHRONOLOGY: Predator (1987) Predator 2 Alien vs Predator Alien vs Predator: Requiem (Unrated) Predators Predator (2018) [SKIP THIS AWFUL FRANCHISE-KILLING REBOOT] Prometheus [OPTIONAL] Covenant [OPTIONAL] Alien Aliens (Special Edition) Alien 3 (Assembly Cut) Alien Resurrection (Director's Cut) [OPTIONAL]

They did the Space Jockey (huge skeleton) set by only building one wall, then putting the Space Jockey and the floor on a turntable. By carefully choosing the angles, and keeping track of what would be behind the actors, they managed to give the impression that it was this huge bowl-shaped room without having to actually build it. The Nostromo interior sets were full 360 deg sets, that is to say they didn't have one wall missing like normal movie sets, and the crew had to film inside them with relatively small cameras. The carpenters had to re-build the bridge set mutliple times because Ridley Scott kept saying "make it lower, make it lower..." I think this was the first time a movie set was made that way. It's been done since of course, notably on the Firefly TV show. Another fun fact: the lasers used to make the blue light over the eggs in the alien spacecraft were borrowed from the rock band The Who, who were filming a live concert on another stage at Shepperton Studios at the same time that Alien was filming there. If you watch this video, you'll see them being used at about 6:35 in the instrumental of Won't Get Fooled Again: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i3XJcpd-d9l-lbM

Fun fact about the part where they are exploring the alien ship and they see the giant alien corpse. The suits the actors were wearing were extremely hot, the point that the cast was regularly passing out, as they had no ventilation. For the scene with the giant deceased alien pilot, often called the "space jockey" at the time, they use smaller suits and had the director cinematographer's children in them, they were smaller and it would make the set look bigger. It was only after they started passing out as well, that changes were made to the suit. The alien suit also posed its own problem, as the creatures tail meant that the actor couldn't sit down. They had to make a swing to accommodate him so he could rest.

Wanted to see this so bad when it came out. But didn't get the chance to. In 5th grade I bought the paperback and started reading it. The descriptions on the ship was so creepy I would not go in the house alone. The hallway was lit up and I went out and sat on the car within sight on my dad tilling the garden. Then read the chestburster scene and I put the book down and ended up giving it to a classmate. Missing it in theaters might have been a good thing. Did see Aliens in theaters. One of the best theater experience I had. People were gasping, cheering and hooting. The 2 movies are my favorites.

Hi Kamilla, this is, for me, a work of art, revolutionary in every way. You have to put it in context, it's a film from 40 years ago, when SF was changing from the way it was seen in the 60s/70s, very bright to something more in line with what interstellar travel could really be. It only had as precedents Kubrik's 2001, trying to be very, on the one hand true to what life in space can be and on the other hand with a very interesting message; and on the other hand Star Wars, which chose to follow in the wake of space adventures, Flash Gordon style. One should mention the influence of the comics on this film, and how this in turn influenced the comics and subsequent cinema; one can say that there is a before and an after of this film and Blade Runner. I won't go any further, I send you a big hug and lots of encouragement for your channel to continue growing.

I didn't see _Alien_ until a couple years ago. I knew I would enjoy it, but I assumed there would be no real surprises or plot twists, because _Alien_ is like _Star Wars,_ everyone goes in knowing what it's about and roughly what happens, including most of the spoilers, because they get referenced and discussed so much in other media. So 17:15 completely blew my mind. I had already seen _Alien: Covenant_ and _Prometheus,_ so I knew what the white blood meant, but until that moment I had _no_ clue there was a secret android in _Alien._ I had assumed androids were introduced in later films. I was so, so happy that I'd somehow never learned that spoiler, that _Alien_ was able to have a big surprise waiting for me after all.

I think it would be only for one scene in the extended cut that is early on, but that would be if you haven't seen this movie. First movie I saw in the series was Aliens theatrical cut, so I didn't know about the facehugger at all. That surprised me later in Aliens. The director's cut reveals a facehugger earlier in the movie than the theatrical cut does. I think that would be the only reason why.

A couple things that have occurred to me about this movie. First, the _Nostromo_ is a _mining_ ship, being sent on an _investigation._ This doesn't seem proper to me. Mining ships are properly sent to places that are already well _investigated_ and _explored._ You find a place that has a valuable resource, you investigate it and explore it (with _scout_ ships), you identify every probable threat and _then_ you send mining ships. Then those mining ships fill their holds _to capacity_ with that resource, _whatever_ it is. Then those mining ships focus on getting that resource straight to wherever it's needed with all available _haste._ Second, if they had the foresight to put in place the protocol to keep someone out of the ship for at least 24 hours after probable exposure lest they risk exposing anyone else, it seems to me they ought to have _likewise_ had the foresight to have designed the _Nostromo_ with two _separate_ medical facilities; one you access from _inside_ the ship and one you access from _outside;_ so anyone who's been exposed can undergo treatment without exposing anyone _else._

We can assume that she set the autopilot to take her back to Earth like she would have done on the Nostromo.
