@Jack Hayhurst When looking at tickets sold after the opening weekend, the first two Alien films sold 48 million tickets. The last six Alien movies have only sold 40 million tickets. That's an interesting fact, not an opinion, that testifies to the strong word of mouth that the first two Alien films had over the last six Alien films, beginning with Alien 3. The drop in tickets sold after opening weekend for Alien 3 fits what happened to Star Trek V compared to the 1986 sequels Aliens and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. This occurrence of several dreadful sequels with down ticket sales that all attacked God from 1986 to 1992 all point to the last scene of Poltergeist since both Psycho and Poltergeist had dreadful failed sequels in 1986 with similar subject matter. Psycho points to the last scene of Poltergeist, a scene that could very well change the world for the better. You are entitled to your opinions on Alien 3, but the more relevant numbers and facts all point to something bigger than the Alien franchise. Besides, who is going to argue for sequels like Jaws: The Revenge, Psycho III, and Poltergiest II when compared to the original movies of the same movie franchises?
@rigelbellatrix84105 жыл бұрын
@Jack Hayhurst I never said anything about movies with great opening weekends. I mentioned the ticket sales AFTER opening weekends. The ticket sales AFTER opening weekends may not be a 100% surefire way of judging a film's quality, but it IS more accurate than other ways of pricing a film's worth, such as listening to a few random voices on the internet. Looking at ticket sales AFTER opening weekend is a more reliable way of looking at a film's quality compared to films of the same franchise. I strongly disagree with your statement that the box office has absolutely no relevance to the film's quality. Everything I wrote in my first reply to your message still stands. The end of Poltergeist can change the world for the better.

Alien 3 is massively underrated. For me, it's the last great film in the franchise. Depressingly dark, yet retains a special place in my heart. Imagine what would of happened if we had William Gibson's Cold War/Xeno contagion script, Vincent Ward's weird but enticing wooden planet concept, or worse, Eric Red's crap script that felt like the writing of a gore happy teenager.

Vastly underrated sequel which was a return to form for the Alien series. I remember the first time I watched it and how much I hated it because it wasn't like the first two in that it wasn't horribly scary like the first movie and it wasn't the roller coaster thrill ride that Aliens was. It was more of a mystery/ prison drama type of film with quick bursts of horror and a few thrills here and there. It was more about Ripley this time as a human being rather than the strong survivor we watched her portray two movies before. The older I've gotten and the more I've read into the film's sordid production the more I actually appreciate it. It's not for everyone and even I myself do not just pop this one in if I just want a quick, fun Alien experience. Alien 3 is more of a film to be for lack of a better phrase best enjoyed when you're feeling kind of hopeless and angry much like the characters in the film. I've really only watched Alien 3 when I'm either really depressed or just trying to watch the whole series. But it is a film to be studied. It is a prime example of what happens when a studio takes away a director's creative control and tells them exactly what to make instead of just letting them do their job. Having said all that, Alien 3 is a hauntingly beautiful film and one of the series' surprising high points. It's a shame more don't appreciate it.

The score to Alien 3 is the closest thing to an artistic achievement that can be said of any other aspect of filmmaking for the likes of the failed sequels Poltergeist II, Psycho III, Jaws: The Revenge, and Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. * But I still maintain that the first two Alien movies had better scores than Alien 3, a movie that regardless of anyone's opinion, failed at the domestic box-office in 1992. And there's making no mistake of where the makers of Alien 3 decided to go in terms of subject matter.
@vlada1313 жыл бұрын
@@rigelbellatrix8410 OK, sorry for using 'dumb', I was being impolite for no reason. Apologies. As for 'Alien 3', my personal opinion is that it's a great movie, maybe even a masterpiece, but only if considered as a standalone film. As a part of the Alien franchise, it fails on many levels - a giant plot hole with the alien eggs on Sulaco, killing off Hicks and Newt (and then even showing an autopsy of Newt), and Ripley dying for no reason at all because her clone was later created in 'Alien: Resurrection'. If this movie had really ended the trilogy, then it would've been a great finale; the way it turned out, it's just something that should be retconned one day by some new and fresh entry into the franchise (something that's hopefully neither a new 'Prometheus' sequel or some new Alien+Predator crossover).

Things happen for a reason, such as the subject matter of Alien 3 and of those other dreadful sequels from the other movie franchises that I had mentioned. I believe that through the success of Aliens in the crucial year of 1986, the Alien franchise ultimately points to the end of 1982’s Poltergeist…a scene that could change the world for the better. @rigelbellatrix84106 жыл бұрын
Actually, the movie deserves less than a 5/10, but the IMDb ratings are skewed by outspoken folks aware of this movie's subtext who gave this movie an exceptionally high rating to raise its average. The most honest way to determine the movie's quality is to look at the number of tickets sold after opening weekend. Aliens sold 20.2 million tickets compared to the 8.7 million tickets sold by Alien 3, kind of like what happened to Star Trek V after the successful 1986 sequel Star Trek IV.
@dependencyonlove87516 жыл бұрын
Just because something sells more tickets and is popular doesn't actually mean it is better in anyway! You must be a fucking idiot to assume that logic. See Rigel, Sounds fucking stupid doesn't it? We have a name for the masses who buy tickets for junk, We call them *The Lowest Common Denominator*
@rigelbellatrix84106 жыл бұрын
Well, I'm not talking about Jerry Springer. I'm talking about movies of the same franchise. I'm talking about tickets sold after opening weekend, not just tickets sold. True, it's not the purest way to look at a movie's quality, but it is one of the more honest ways compared to internet ratings, which can be skewered and manipulated by outspoken people aware of the movie's context. I'm talking about dreadful sequels from five movie franchises between 1986 and 1992 that all made the same mistake, that all did poorly at the box office after opening weekend, and that all point to the last scene in Poltergeist. A scene that undermines the likes of Jerry Springer, Kim Kardashian, and Caitlyn Jenner. Also, Close Encounters Of The Third Kind sold more tickets than Plan Nine From Outer Space. Jaws sold more tickets than Jaws The Revenge. And E.T. sold more tickets than Mac And Me. They sold more tickets because they were better, even though the compared movies had similar subject matter.
@rigelbellatrix84106 жыл бұрын
True, the lowest common denominator happens quite often. Like in 1996 with the dreadful blockbusters Twister and Independence Day, or the recent wave of 18 comic book movies. So it depends upon what you're looking at whether it sounds stupid. Sometimes the lowest common denominator comes into play, like they do with recent movies, and sometimes quality comes into play, like with what happened between 1986 and 1992 with those five movie franchises. Anyway, there's more to what I believe than just the movie franchises with dreadful sequels. There's also the 32 unlikely movie similarities between 1982 and 1993 that have everything to do with indisputable facts and absolutely nothing to do with the lowest common denominator. But the censors here at KZbin won't allow me to post those 32 pairs of facts.

I am one of the very few who LOVED alien 3.. I feel like it stayed true to the alien franchise “feel”. Yea it was a bit depressing but that’s what makes it an original in my opinion.. alien 4 just sucked and shouldn’t have been made hahahaha

I Love the Score, love the movie and our German synchronization especially Brian Glover's German voice is saying "die Überlebende (Person) ist eine Frau" (Survivor is a Woman) while this theme is playing in the background 😎🫶🏻

This movie really doesn't get enough credit I loved every minute of it! Yes it's dark and depressing but it's a perfect ending to the whole franchise until fox ruined everything with resurrection. Alien 3 is a perfect alien movie that can stand on its own while also fitting into the franchise in a very fulfilling way and I will continue to appreciate it and watch it for years to come.
@rigelbellatrix84102 жыл бұрын
Actually, this movie is getting a lot of credit from plenty of fans here at this KZbin page. It should be enough considering other relevant facts that show Alien 3 is when the Alien franchise went off track. * "So what makes you think...?" ...the first words from Sigourney Weaver after mentioning the first two Alien movies in Alien 3.

First time I watched this movie thought it sucked cuz Ripley died. As time went on and the more I watched it again and again I learned to love it despite the problems it faced getting made it is underrated but a classic unlike the others that have followed in its wake.

Whether it's Xenomorphs or Anne Rice's Vampires, you can't deny that Elliot Goldenthal is a master of his craft.
@DrQuagmire1 Жыл бұрын
agreed!!! as much as I love James Horner's "Aliens" soundtrack, with the "Bishop's Countdown" track being my absolute favorite, I think this track is near equal to the creepiness to Jerry Goldsmith's opening for the original "Alien"
@richman16617 жыл бұрын
If someone told me to describe "Gothic Nightmare" in musical form then this piece of music would be the answer. It's perfect on every level. I am not sure why Goldenthal hasn't done more movies. If I was a director I would approach him for sure.

alien 3 just goes to show us how hopeless it is to fight the aliens. The aliens are extremely intelligent and hard to kill even with guns. The alien in this film aquired the attributes of the dog it came out of (Fast like a dog). I really wished they would of used the royal facehugger (it can facehug two things instead of one, one with a drone and one with a queen).
@darkmage72809 жыл бұрын
I respectfully disagree. Xenomorphs appear to function primarily by instinct, and while they appear intelligent, they are obviously not "extremely" so. They don't appear to be hard to kill with guns, since they're gunned down in their dozens in Aliens, and it's not hopeless to fight them at all: we just steer clear out of the planetoids they inhabit.
@MrRepoman1979 жыл бұрын
darkmage7280 well even after 4 movies we still dont know alot about the aliens. When it comes to survival i believe they are extremely intelligent. for example alien 3 and avpr.
@auralexperiment9 жыл бұрын
Yes I agree they have a good degree of intelligence which is also shown in Aliens, when Ripley and Newt enter the nest. The Queen bargains with Ripley, telling her soldier aliens to back off somewhat implying "if you leave my eggs alone, I will spare you" :)

I'll say an unpopular opinion: if you see the "director's" cut (in inverted commas as Fincher disowned the film) and make peace with Newt and Hicks dying - as if Aliens never took place - I find it one, if not *the* most solid sequel of Alien. The atmosphere, the sense of helplessness, the score, the visuals... You really feel it's a descent into hell

Does anyone know what that synth beat or base at 0:24 is called? I hear it in a lot of movies and I can't figure it out what it is.
@XXensational8 жыл бұрын
It's the sound of the steel cello, which is an intrument invented by Robert Rutman. Goldenthal used it in some of his scores. I always thought that it was a synth sound, but it's totally acoustic.

@giovannyalpizar53514 жыл бұрын
Lexington Deville84 Apparently, Hicks was moves out of the dropship and put with the rest of the ship’s sleeping quarters. Somehow, some grunt made it on the ship along with the rest of mercenaries and it was raided by aliens. I don’t like it either, but eh. Hicks made it out. We can’t really tell if that was really Hicks since the machine is the one that tells who’s in the tube. Something went wrong and the machine thought it was actually him and in reality it wasn’t him. Either one is dead because of Wey-Yu’s “crew expendable”.

Alien 3 is brilliant. Not sure how the extreme hate for it got started. I can see why David Fincher was left frustrated by the whole experience but he should still be very proud of the work he did on it and this Goldenthal score is arguably better than Goldsmith's for Alien and Horners' for Aliens. Resurrection was donkey balls though. Just like its infamous Ripley clones its a bit of an abomination.
@TheHeartlessHero6 жыл бұрын
I liked resurrection (don't ask why cause I don't know why) but Id have to say that my absolute favorite was Aliens.... My mom and I would laugh when the queen took the elevator as she chased Ripley & Nute. We didnt laugh because we thought it was bad or anything.... It was because that would be a moment were, if we experienced, we'd just be like "😧Really? Thats really how this day is going to go?"

Agnus Dei, Latin for Lamb of God, John the Baptist upon seeing Jesus proclaims "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world." Lt. Ripley, having beaten the Alien twice, now becomes the lamb for which she will sacrifice all that she holds dear, the Human Race. She sacrifices herself, and the Queen Alien, to prevent it from ever reaching Earth. The Title track is significant, for, in the end, she is taking away the sin of all mankind for attempting to achieve and control a power that man could never have control over. Ripley was the lamb.
