Alien 3 left me cold as soon as it kicked off. The fact that Hicks and Newt were killed before the movie even got going kind of made the whole final scene(s) in Aliens pointless. Rippers went through all that effort with Hicks, got him back to the drop-ship, then after grabbing ammo and weapons, went back into the nest to rescue Newt. She battles yet more aliens, rescues Newt, makes it back to the dust-off site, is rescued by Bishop... THEN has to battle the Queen in the hangar..... So, the characters went through all of that for nothing. What a waste, and most would agree that Hicks was a pretty cool and worthy character. I think Fincher actually did well with the limited script.

+SehrBA Nope, that shit wasn't powerful. Didn't feel tragic at all, not once did I feel sad or sorry for her. They really fucked it up and especially by killing those too without nothing to affect you as a viewer. It was more of a, oh well. Sucks for Fincher since he really wanted to do something with this film and the two other guys that left especially the first one. Fuck studious for destroying great ideas just because they want their fucking money.

+SehrBA the truth is I absolutelly agree with you..I've just replied to another comment this: "The only boring stuff is that "how terrible that Newt and Hicks were killed off instantly... " I LOVE the fact that those characters were killed... It deepens the isolation... the terror, that the ones you've survived with, now are dead, and you have to face a fucking beast like that again on a dirty, rotting, dark planet, without a weapon, among murderers, rapists." however, I don't think that their death made the final scenes of Aliens pointless...cause just because they survived then, that doesn't serve as a proof that they have to survive any further. They survived until that point, and that is legitimate. Aliens is untouched by this.

+SehrBA II feel the way you do...I love all the 3 movies, and I love them the way they are...each of them has a unique personality. and yes I think in part 3 a bigger emphasis was placed on emotions... And the truth is, major part of the cast were selected from GREAT British actors. I like the way you described the three movies..couldn't agree more..
@SlyRy8 жыл бұрын
+SehrBA "I never saw hicks as a cool character. He was the most forgettable character in the series" Well, you're wrong. Dwayne Hicks was the most calm, cool, and collected Marine character. He "stayed frosty", was conscientious of others (to Newt: "Don't touch that, it's dangerous, honey" among other scenes) and was written to be a survivor. That's what the audience would call "cool" and "memorable". Also the fact we are given and know his first name is another reason he's memorable. Not to mention the enormous success of the film .... I love Alien 3 and I love the Alan Dean Foster novelization even more- I think every fan of the series should read it. I think the film gets a bad rep. I remember the way the characters look and behave, what their internal struggles or conflicts were, but even as a fan I don't remember their names because I don't think they're meant to be memorable. However, the group of inmates as a collective, as a symbol, are memorable. Saying things like they have more personality and character than the cast of Aliens is really reaching because Aliens has a vastly better screenplay.

It didn't work for only one reason. They killed everyone that was saved from Alien 2, accept for Ripley, audiences hated it from then on, no matter what they did in Alien3. Rule one, you don't spend an entire movie saving a little girl name Nute, a soldier that liked Ripley, and a android that save them all, then the first thing you do, in the next movie, is kill all but Ripely.. I second Trevock1 's opinion. I thought it was brilliant too. Not all films are for everybody (Do you know that there are actually people who hate the LOTR series?), people have different tastes, and I do admit that the theatrical version is a mess. But still I watch Alien 3 without my nostalgia goggles on and enjoy it every single time. IMO The most redeeming quality of this film is that it brings back the horror of the Xenomorph that it lost in Aliens; that it is a deadly creature tough to defeat instead of shooting them like video game enemies. To counter the biggest complaint Alien series fans have with Alien 3, the fact that the writers killed off Hicks and Newt, I think it was an excellent decision because having Hicks alive, he would steal the entire show and make Ripley a side character, and if Newt was still alive...well...I love my stories to be depressing (and man, this one surely is!) so I personally don't want her sticking around longer. This is Ripley's fight against the Xenomorphs, bound by fate. I believe Hicks and Newt would disturb that trend and turn it into another unoriginal, uninspired movie series. Alien 3 was interesting because of the lack of weapons and skilled fighters. "Amnesia: The Dark Descent", anyone? And man, dat music! Best of the franchise hands down. I also liked the idea of killing Ripley off, thus preventing the series to become dumber by the new, like other franchises have suffered. (.....until Ressurrection came along.... Even though I like Ressurrection in it's own special way. XD)

My quick ideas that could have improved this movie... -Don't kill off Newt. Due to the age difference, i can understand why the actress couldn't be in the movie. Maybe have her hypersleep-pod be put into another liferaft that ends up orbiting the prison-planet. This would give Ripley reason to try and go on and escape. -Don't kill off Hicks. He could have served as an ally to help with the 3rd idea. -Have the prisoners be much more violent and anti-social. It could have been interesting to to see the heroes of the previous film try to survive the threat from both the alien and worst of humanity. -When escaping the planet, have them attempt to save Newt, only to find out that she was the one to have the alien inside her and Ripley has to shut off her pod and kill her. Then she and Hicks, hardened by these experiences move on and maybe plot something against Weyland-Yutani... As it stands, i wasn't a big fan A3 when it came out, but it did work pretty well, if not for the script, but it had a really strong visual look. Now looking back, i can find quite a lot to like about both A3 and resurrection, but they're nowhere near Alien and especially Aliens...

@derajnitram18829 жыл бұрын
Thats what I hate about it, I hate when any film just kills off characters, because the filmmakers don't wan't to deal with them. Vincent Ward is the biggest reason why those characters were killed off, as that idea came from his initial script. The biggest problem with Alien 3 is it's not all that suspenseful like Alien, and it isn't nearly as thrilling as Aliens, it's just more violent, thats all it really brings to the table, from what came before it. I personally hate the direction Alien 3 took, but thats not what makes it underwhelming, it's everything else. I do think the performances are decent, as is the overall visual design, but the story around it is bleak, and dull. The music is probably my favorite thing about the film.
@alucard6249 жыл бұрын
deraj nitram Yep. Alien 3 had gore just for the sake of gore IMO versus the previous 2 films. The fact that the script was absolutely terrible and with all the BS Fincher was getting from constant studio interference it's a miracle anything ended up on the screen at all. There's a reason Fincher won't talk about this film to this day versus his other films he's made.
@derajnitram18829 жыл бұрын
alucard624 If Fincher hadn't directed that film, and instead some random guy did, I think hardly anyone would stick up for it like they do know. @JurassicRod9 жыл бұрын
By that logic, everything we do is utterly meaningless as we are all gonna die one day, maybe tomorrow. Newt and Hicks were not interesting characters. They existed to make Ripley more interesting. They did their job. I find Ripley works better as alone, tragic character. Losing her surrogate family makes her all the more tragic and sympathetic. As well as freeing her from the stereotypical gender role of mother and wife/gf she was put in in Aliens and making her a more independent character again.

The problem was the they started filming before the script was finished, so they had to build much of the story around the sets that were already made for previous drafts, they killed off good characters unceremoniously in exchange for prisoners who's shaved heads make it hard to tell one from the other (as well as most of them being terrible people with the more interesting/likable ones getting killed off early), there is zero explanation for how the alien eggs got on their escape pod, just making characters suffer in an extremely depressing movie, etc. Basically it's a mess.

Do you know what coherent means, or are you just spouting a catchy phrase you once overheard? (pause while you tab out to look up the definition). Maybe you didn't like the story, and that's fine, but that doesn't make it incoherent. Everything happened in a logical and realistic order within the confines of this fictional universe. This movie can be viewed as the end of a long seeming tragedy with the ultimate victory of the hero at the last second. All three movies are basically Ripley vs the Alien and in each battle along the way the Alien wins every time: in Alien all Ripley's crewmates/friends are killed, in Aliens during Ripley's 57 year cryosleep her daughter lived and died, so in a way the Aliens caused her to lose her daughter, and in Alien3 Ripley loses Hicks, Newt and Bishop, and now Ripley's carrying an Alien queen within her (like a final "fuck you" from the Alien Queen Ripley defeated). So by the end of Alien3 Ripley has lost everything to the Alien, everyone she's met along the way, and now even her life once the alien queen emerges. The grand tragedy is almost complete. But at the last moment, Ripley sacrifices herself (she's dead anyway) thereby destroying the last Alien and defeating them once and for all and also getting revenge against the Company by denying them their prize. She also very likely has saved the human race from being destroyed by the Aliens, the ultimate heroes death. I guess many might not like it because it's not your typical blazing action hero ending, but the story is still good and the ending is good. Sure it could have been done better but considering the difficulties it's lucky it turned out as well as it did. I think Ripley should have had a little speech at the end though, the little fuck you I've won over you all.

Alien 3 is disgustingly underrated. This was literally the darkest, most "realistic" film in the entire franchise. I LOVED the way they just killed off Newt and Hicks in the beginning, adding to the realism and molding Ripley into an even more dynamic character. The ending scene where she jumps into the fire was beyond epic in my opinion, and was THE perfect way to end the franchise. The Dog/Bull Alien is hands down THE deadliest creature in the ENTIRE saga and the sound track was a fucking MASTERPIECE. The REAL reason people hated this film, was because it wasn't a typical Hollywood action film like the previous installment and because Newt and Hicks were killed off from the beginning. Most people don't like serious "depressing" movies. They just want explosions, guns, and happy go-lucky endings.

I beg to differ. The way you talk about this leads me to believe that you barely watched the first two. How can you LOVE the way two very important characters to the fans and Ripley get killed off? Thats just sick. And I think Ripley not only earned, but DESERVED a happy ending. She went through so much only to have it snatched away in this clusterfuck of a film. And the dog-xeno is nowhere close to being as deadly or cool-looking as the queen from aliens.

+sparkdragon 6 "The way you talk about this leads me to believe that you barely watched the first two" - I've probably RE-watched the first two films WAY more than you have. I've been obsessed with the series since I was 6-yrs old. I own BOTH quadrilogies. The DVD's AND the Bluray. So you can shove that assumption up your ass. "I think Ripley not only earned, but DESERVED a happy ending. She went through so much only to have it snatched away" - That's life. That's the way the world works. There are millions of people around the world who fought and devoted their ENTIRE lives to a single purpose only to see it fail in the end. Happy, fairy go lucky endings are only in the movies and too predictable "How can you LOVE the way two very important characters to the fans and Ripley get killed off?" - It's called appreciating realism and embracing the bleak grimness of a truly dark Horror film. "the dog-xeno is nowhere close to being as deadly or cool-looking as the queen from aliens" - The queen alien may LOOK cooler. But it was fucking big, slow and clumsy (as portrayed in Aliens). The dog Alien was faster than a fucking cheetah, it could run on walls, fit in tight spaces and was hands down the sneakiest xeno in the entire saga, making it the deadliest.

I know it's petty and I've heard even decent arguments to defend it, but for me I've just never been able to get over the beginning. The film is a bit of a fascinating mess overall, although not irredeemable, but I just couldn't get past them killing off the other survivors in such a shitty and contrived way. (not to mention plot hole of how the alien got onto the ship, still an enormous plot hole that even the best explanations I and others have come up with still feel knee-jerk.). Yeah I know it's a silly, even unreasonable gripe but...I can't help how I feel the other survivors deserved better, and I'm fairly convinced that even if the second film tied up loose ends so damn well...that if they HAD to continue the series that there was still a better way to set up a third movie than what they ended up going with. Even if the others had ended up dying another way I just feel like there was a probably less contrived way of doing it than "they all died in the crash of the supposed escape module conveniently malfunctioning except for Ripley." And yeah I've heard the argument that it aids a narrative that suggests that the Alien (the xenomorph race in general) is unbeatable no matter what Ripley does and it's a fair point, but I still can't help but feel a bit salty about it.

I agree completely with what you said, add to that the fact they didn't even bother getting the sleep chambers right from the Sulaco. When James Cameron bent over backwards to get the interior of The Narcissus correct in every way right down to the harpoon gun still being stuck in the door, I felt there was no desire to even give that proper respect to Cameron to get the interior of the Sulaco correct. Yes, I understand about the money not being there, but there had to be something left of the Sulaco's interior to reproduce that without costing too much. And you're damn right that Hicks, Bishop and Newt deserved better. It was one of the reasons I cannot watch the film today. How callously they dealt with Newt in having the autopsy done on her.... I must be one of the few as I liked Alien3 a lot! I think a few of the effects on the Alien running and on the ceiling looked WAY to CGI, but overall it was pretty horrifying. I like the 'Extended version' better. I like the alien NOT shooting from Ripley's chest. That scene is ridiculous. I like the fact she just jumped and that's it. With what was pieced together I do again think it fits well with the other 2. But I know I'm in a small category.

Yeah, it was very edgy and truly futuristic. It was ahead of its time, this type of cool moviemaking would later become common, but it was very fresh back then.

in 1991 it was already "old". Gothicpunk, steampunk, and whatever this is (id say, dustpunk) were already overused in the 80's. This movie, in fact, seems so 1988 it hurts. And none of those stilistic traits apply to Alien and Aliens, wich were blue/dark movies closer to cyberpunk than "robe of fur and shaved head" aesthethos.

The fact that it was a development hell doesn't make it any less good. Aliens was also a development hell and some would say the first one was too. Star Wars was a development hell so was Apocalypse Now, Blade Runner and hundreds of other movies that are now cult classics. The story of Alien 3 didn't go the way people hoped and because of that it gets a bad rep, but forget Aliens, forget Newt and Hicks, just look at Alien 3 for what it is. Yes it's very dark, but everything about it is great. The music, the music, the sets, the editing and I personally LOVE the story. Anyways, I wish people would stop comparing it to Aliens and see it for what it is.
@samiamtheman73798 жыл бұрын
The problems with alien 3 also include things like having the more interesting and likable characters killed off unceremoniously (even the ones who weren't from previous movies) and leaves a bad taste in your mouth from the very beginning, and there is no explanation for where the alien eggs came from as well as why the alien didn't just burst out of Ripley in a few minutes like it did with Kane in the first movie. I do't think the movie is completely irredeemable and am sort of happy it has some fans, but the negatives heavily outweigh the positives so much that I can't really call it a good movie.
@250frederic8 жыл бұрын
The alien takes a longer time to gestate because it's a queen. As for where the egg came from, what do we care, it adds to the mystery. Just as we're left to wonder what was the Space Jockey and what was the story behind it, here we can imagine our own story like maybe the Company already had eggs on board the Sulacco before it even arrived on LV-426. We see in Aliens that they were already experimenting with facehuggers in the science lab. For all we know they could have shipped facehuggers or even eggs to Earth years before Ripley was found. We know the Company thought the Nostromo's crew was expendable and so were the marines after that, what if this whole mission was just an attempt to kill Ripley for good. And remember Bishop never gives a clear answer to Ripley after admitting there was an alien on board. We could even argue the EEV was programmed to crash on Fiorina 161 in case Ripley survived after the event of Aliens. Anyways, I'm not saying the writers went that far with their thinking, but the fact that they didn't answer those questions doesn't mean that they can't be answered.

I think Alien 4 had good parts... The bit where the aliens are in the cages and the scientist threatens them with pressing the button and they understand, that's a good moment. Yeah! I hated the fact they killed off the other characters from the start too! But what made me felt worse was that Ripley was somehow impregnated with an alien and so she was screwed too! How she was impregnated was never explained fully and seemed far fetched! Plus this was revealed near the beginning as well! taking away any hope or a surprise for a good ending! A shame! A real shame!... ... Then another cash cow, Alien Resurrection came out and made Alien 3 look good!
@Alien00000origin7 жыл бұрын
I don't mean to start a fight here, just asking... but do you mean how the egg got inside the ship with "How she was impregnated was never explained fully..." That part is retcon, no doubt about it, but they show the facehugger inside the rescue pod, they show it use acid to make it's way through the glass and (SPOILERS) it does show Ripley's face in the scan, with the facehugger stuck to her face. It is pretty much explained right at the beginning of the movie. It just may become an Easter egg to those, who get it only when then matter is revealed in the later scanner scene and they watch the first few minutes again. (Granted, it does make the impregnation time really short, since that was their only way to get the impregnation done before the crash, so they do screw over the impregnation timeline for that.)
@RuddsReels7 жыл бұрын
Yeah! It's how the egg got there in the first place? Only the queen can lay eggs, how can an isolated egg appear on the ship? I felt this part of the story was too forced! Plus the fact that Ripley's fate was sealed up right at the start of the movie, spoiled things for me! From that point on all of the characters I cared about are dead or going to be dead and so I started to lose interest in the rest of the movie.
@RuddsReels7 жыл бұрын
+albert fish You misunderstand me! I thought the ending to Alien 3 was the best part of the movie, that was a fitting end to the saga (which was spoiled with Alien Resurrection). What I did not like, (which I have already stated) was Ripley being impregnated with an Alien egg in a farfetched manner! Plus the early timing with this reveal! Ripley finding out about her impregnation too early in the film was a massive spoiler which told the audience the ending - that Ripley was going to kill herself! The final reason is killing off nearly all of the surviving characters from the previous movie, making their struggle pointless!

@jondavidson90397 жыл бұрын
You were far, far too kind to this alleged film. Vincent Ward is an idiot. A wooden planet? Really? Forgetting the fact that it would collapse under the stress of its own weight, the idea is stupid and boring. No-one wants to watch a movie called Alien that's about monks on a wooden planet. You might as well make a film called "Voyage to the Wooden Planet". Charles Dutton's character was flat and boring. He added nothing to this film. Ward's other idiotic idea was killing off the three other main characters in the film, just because he couldn't figure out what to do with them, nor cared about them. 20th Century Fox producers were morons to allow that. None of these executives learned in film school that when you have characters that have struggled and fought against death, then the audience that rooted for them now has an emotional investment in them? And that half the reason they are watching it is to see what happens to them? It would be like watching the Lord of the Rings, where the second installment has Gandalf grieving over all of the characters from the first film who are killed off-screen, except for Frodo. In space, no-one can hear a film suck. Except this one seems to defy the laws of physics. It would audibly suck inside a black hole.
@MephProduction7 жыл бұрын
Nope, killing off those characters was the best thing they could do,, sets up the dark, brutal unsafe tone of the film.. gets the audience worried for what may happen next.... it's not playschool where everyone's a winner..
@PointReflex6 жыл бұрын
Ripley already lost everyone prior to Alien 3, her friends and love interest (Dallas) got obliterated, her daughter died when she was lost in space, and what she only could get was newt, yet Alien isn't about happy endings, killing of once again what Ripley hold most dear was a reminder that the creature itself is a curse, even the nightmare that keept her awake in the night became a reality when she realized she had one of the creatures inside her body... from that point it was just a matter of time, there was no escape for her. She makes the ultimate sacrifice to destroy the creature and stop Weyland Yutani from developing biological weapons from the creature, also death was the only way she could find peace since as I said, before loosing Newt she lost so much and had nightmares from the experience. So to consider Alien 3 as lazy or the deaths of Hicks and Newt irrelevant to the plot is a reminder that you didn't watched the movie, didn't pay attention to the film or just covered your ears and eyes and screamed "la la la la la" when some of the most powerfull and intricate scenes in the franchise where on display. Sure the film had issues, yet the producers went with the desition to kill Ripley and end the franchise there, they had the balls to finish a cash cow machine when they needed it the most, for that I gave them a LOT of credit. Of course later on new producers came on and Resurrection went into production, but at the time, Alien 3 was a bold move and in many cases the right choice. Time gave the movie the recognition it deserved, as it happened with Carpenter's The Thing or Verhoeven's Starship Troopers the film got bashed (MOSTLY because of the death of two characters) but with the passing of the years the public recognized the meaning behind the film and despite it's massive development hell it is to this day the PERFECT ending to the RIpley's story, and most importantly, it ends with the redemption of a bunch of murderers and rapists when they too did the ultimate sacrifice to kill the creature.

I love Alien 3. I was able to forgive the killing of Newt and Hicks (and Bishop eventually) as it would've been a very bizarre sequel with 3-4 protagonists who were likely to continuing to survive, thus stretching credibility. The grungy, depressing and somber setting compliment the realistic, oppressive future where even heroes can die. It was a hard movie to like, but I admire the ballsy decisions the story took, and feel that the anticlimactic ending rounded off a very dark and unsettling look into a possible future.

I would dispute your assertion that the first 2 Alien movies were cheap monster flicks made without studio pressure; Ridley Scott had several producers stalking him during the filming, continually hassling him to get things done faster and cheaper and turning up at the set design and production centre and cancelling much of the work there - and the 2nd Aliens movie had a good budget due to the success of the first movie. And far from being anti-sci-fi, the huge success of Star Wars had the studios desperately looking for sci-fi projects to film - that is in fact the reason that Dan O'Bannion's previously rejected script for Alien was bought in the first place.

Screw Vincent Ward and his idiotic idea of a "wooden planet" and his even more idiotic idea of killing off Newt, the android, and having Ripley commit suicide. Good going, Ward; you killed off two sympathetic characters the audience had an investment in. What pointy headed writing teacher taught you that was a "gutzy,cool thing to do"? Why was the molten lead there? Just to have her jump into it. Hey Ward, here's an idea; don't write scripts on long flights. The air pressure seems to affect your brain; and not in a good way....
@BollocksUtwat10 жыл бұрын
You know I bet he didn't imagine a wooden planet of monks being a foundry. I imagine suicide would have been something altogether different in that version. I would have loved to see a wooden man built planet. That would be a sci fi classic unto itself, something worthy of the genre label.
@MaskedMarvyl10 жыл бұрын
Bollocks, maybe it would. In which case it should be called Monks On The Wooden Planet. But that has got nothing to do with Aliens vs humans. If Ward wasn't interested in that story, then he shouldn't have written it. And he didn't. He was a pinhead who destroyed a great character he couldn't write for. It's harder to know who is stupider; him or the studio who hired this twit.
@BollocksUtwat10 жыл бұрын
John Richardson Why can't that setting be appropriate for an alien film? It would be a perfect departure from the heavily futuristic industry we'd been steeped in up until then. It would have been the freshest thing for the franchise. Concrete and metal are cold and blue, while wood is warm and in the brighter spectrum of colours. Thematically it would have been an excellent vessel for propelling Ripley into a different mindset, especially after losing so much. Rather than rubes and soldiers now we have cerebral presumably pacifist spiritualists. Not just a horror flick or an action flick, we can now have something about a demon haunting Ripley and her struggling with how to finally be released from it. It would have been a fascinating thing to see done, with the Alien no less.
@petercampi28409 жыл бұрын
BollocksUtwat Why? Because the concept is too far Fantasy for a utilitarian sci-fi universe that has established itself as a unique brand of sci-fi that was never done before. The universe was tangible and it's characters, human and mortal. You could imagine living in that movie world because it looks very much like a possible future for our kind. Fox just didn't care when it came to 3. The original Alien 3 script had the most ballsy move possible: change the main character to Hicks. This was mainly due to Weaver not wanting part in another sequel so soon after Aliens. It also makes the Aliens more deadly than they've been depict before or even after (however, I think Blomkamp may be using Gibson's awesome idea in his script). Gibson's script also had a large space station (2 in fact!) in his script that was a large spherical station built on an captured asteroid satellite under construction. The scripts after his pretty much raped the idea by turning what was floating civilization into a wooden monastery. So you see, the whole wooden planet was not an original idea, it was a change on someone else's original idea.
@BollocksUtwat9 жыл бұрын
Peter Campi "Because the concept is too far Fantasy for a utilitarian sci-fi universe " Thats irrelevant to me. You can do whatever you want with your universe. Its not the same movie so it needn't adhere to the same tropes and styles. It needs some commonality but the idea that every movie has to look the same and function the same in the same franchise universe is untrue. If anything the cold utilitarian universe would fit a spiritual retreat that eschews everything in the universe, including the metal. Its a perfect counterpoint. Its what you don't expect and that is specifically a great way to hit an audience. Usually third films in a series suck specifically because they don't know where to go with the franchise and play it safe rehashing old tropes. That a studio has no imagination or ambition to break the pattern is nothing to do with the potential itself. From a creative perspective its a fantastic concept. Also, I don't care if it was or wasn't truly original, in fact I don't think I ever said it was. Whats that got to do with it? In the context of the franchise a courageous and brilliant move would have been to go completely off the reservation.
@CurtisAlfeld9 жыл бұрын
"Fox didn't take sci-fi seriously." That is bullshit. Dan O'Bannon and Ron Shusett had to fight to get Fox to buy the script to the first Alien, and Fox didn't budge until they saw how much fucking money Star Wars made, and they realized they could make a fuck load of money off of sci-fi. The Alien franchise only exists because Fox realized science fiction's popularity, and how lucrative it could be.

Pretty much. What more specifically happened was Star Wars wasn't expected to be as big of an hit as it was, and as a result there was a rush for the "next big space movie" and that's how Alien even came to be considered. Originally, it was turned down, and multiple times if I recall right. What happened was one of the guys in the studio read the script, then brought it to the attention of someone higher up who thought it was boring at first. The guy told him to keep reading and he'll get it, and when he got to the chest burster scene, that's when he realized why he had been highly suggested of reading the script. Of course, the original script was changed, mainly some names, and I think who died and how. It got to the point where the person who wrote it hated it, because it was no longer his own work. Then again, I could be remembering wrong about that last stuff though.

Switch the prison for an orbital refinery would work better as more people can relate to blue/white collar workers. Still kill off newt for Ripley emotion hook (I would have her as the alien host so Ripley is torn when killing the alien is given to her). Keep Hicks as the only soldier on the refinery. It *did* work. It's a depressingly appropriate ending, of Greek tragedy proportions, which absolutely fits the cold and bleak universe the first 3 Alien films take place in.

Great video but in all honesty, I love Alien 3. I think the only thing that really lets it down is the CGI, it's terrible. Other than that I think it's highly unappreciated. Also it's soundtrack is a masterpiece.

Agreed... being a huge fan of all the Alien/s/3 films, the score played such a huge part in the emotion/terror/dread of the films. I love the first two... but being stranded on a prison planet with no weapons against this creature was about as grim as you can get. Alien 3 DID work, for me. And yes, the CGI.... meh

I love the idea of a wooden planet, but it would be impossible to explain how it exists, if you cut down every tree on Earth, it still wouldn't be enough to build it and what are the chances of finding planets with Earth like trees on it to completely harvest into extinction. :S

I have two main problems with this movie. First, it did not make sense. At least in Alien & Aliens you know where the creatures come from, but how the hell did an alien get on to the Sulaco? And second, I didn't care about any of the characters. A male only community, most of whom are vicious criminals who have found God. I was on the side of the alien.

I personally feel it worked...just. I was disappointed the main characters (Hicks, Newt) died like everyone else, but that ending was powerful and sad, and the score was excellent. But they definitely should have stopped there before they did further damage to the franchise.

While I don't disagree with any points in this vid, I have to say Alien3 is my second favorite in the series (after the original). The quality of acting and the pathos in the script are unsurpassed in any film I've seen (and I've seen alot). I like the visuals and the soundtrack.

I must be one of the few people on the planet that actually enjoys alien 3.It's a far superior film to alien ressurection (which really is shite).I agree it was far from perfect - but still don't believe it deserves the hate that it does! it was original /moody well acted and well shot and in my mind tried something different and nearly accomplished it.If it wasn't for the studio interference I reckon finches would have fit it into the canon nicely - but as it is it's a lesser sequel... That deserves far more praise for trying something different and not quite reaching the heights fun her envisioned due to studio interference.But Christ - on the scale of remakes and sequels - this film gets wayy to much hate.

It wasn't totally bad, but it was not very good either. Killing Newt, Hicks, and Bishop in the first 5 minutes was a huge letdown, but it carried on...somewhat. The biggest problem with this film was that it was not developed and planned out very well. The amount of time it took to come up with a story, not to mention an ending, meant that this was not gonna turn very well. FOX fucked this up, it was all a matter of money. It lost the sci-fi touch it had from the first 2 films. The only shining light I saw from this was the effort Fincher put into this hot garbage mess. The soundtrack is also redeemable, but it just created a dark shadow on the series.

Can we also talk about how the premise makes no sense? So the alien queen that was hanging onto the drop ship managed to lay an egg into the Sulaco in the 30 seconds we didn't see her before she ripped Bishop in half. Ripley previously blew up the queens "womb" which the queen then detached from anyways, seemingly removing her ability to lay eggs for the foreseeable future. The facehugger manages to get into Ripley's cryo pod without interrupting her sleep and "impregnate" her. Ripley remains frozen but the facehugger can still be active inside the pod. Then, the facehugger exits the pod somehow and hides until it can get the dog even though it was established in the first film that they can only get one host before rolling over and dying. If the facehugger can get multiple people now all of a sudden, why didn't it also go for Hicks and Newt. Did it read the script and know they were going to die in a crash lol? This premise only makes sense if you don't think about it. The only believable way the aliens could return is from the other eggs in the derelict, assuming the derelict wasn't within the blast radius at the end of aliens.

They had the right actors in the film. Im interested to know what it would have been like if they went with the monks it sounded like it had potential. I sort of liked this film, better than Alien Resurrection

Here is why Alien 3 is loathed IMHO. Imagine going to see Empire Strikes Back only to discover that Han Solo, Chewbacca, Princess Leia, and the droids aren't in it because they die in a fire during the first three minutes of the film. Sure, it's still got Luke fighting the evil Empire, but all of the character development from the previous film is completely gone. You invested in those characters, but you were betrayed. A proper sequel to Aliens would have been easy. There was even a continuation of the story in comic book form. Kill off Hicks and Ripley at the end if you want to. Leave Newt to be the new Ripley if you want to. Continue making sequels. Same formula -- female protagonist and scary monsters (Resident Evil??). A grown-up Newt can be any actress you want -- especially since Carrie Henn chose not to pursue acting as a career (probably wise). Alien 3 is a not a bad movie but it is a HORRIFICALLY BAD sequel to Aliens -- a film which I consider to be a masterpiece.

Star Wars is a far fluffier series than Alien which is horror and quite nihilistic in the first and third. Having Han and Chewie etc die like that would not suit the more family friendly and commercial tone of Star Wars.
@RepublicAgent9 жыл бұрын
Mark Warbington I agree with Toy Box. The Star Wars films never had the tone of the Alien films. Ripley was always a sole survivor, that's her story. Every time she comes back, she is on her own. Much fitting to be more like the first, original film that redo another Aliens. I get why people want an Aliens 2, but running and gunning it not the point of the story. Ripley's tale is dark, lonely, and horrible.

I here all the real complaints about the problems that went into making this film. But much like you've said I think its watchable and disagree with the hate that gets placed on it. I think the performances from its cast are really good and you get to see a young David Fincher showcase his talents with a property that had so many issues. Now this cliché argument that people have about two out of three characters dying at the beginning of the movie(I'm not counting that damn robot he has no soul) really isn't a problem for me. The child actor who played Newt was terrible and didn't do anything after that. And as much as I like Michael Biehn as Hicks the story has always been about Ripley. Sigourney's sense of loss is expressed perfectly in the film. I have no problem watching all three as a complete trilogy Alien, aliens and alien trois. Now the one after 3 and Prometheus are complete dumpster fires.
@getin3489 жыл бұрын
marcwa74 i disagree, i think Prometheus was good and would be regarded better standing separately from the Aliens series. looking forward to the sequal - but for me Alien & Aliens were excellent - 3 was average and its all down hill after that ;0)

I think considering how it was a very troubled shoot with studio meddling they did a great job. Okay, I liked Hicks and Newt, but c'mon killing off main characters is done all the time in films. It just makes Ripley's character all the more tragic and sympathetic. I like the more art-house Gothic horror approach to the film. It gives it a different tone to the rest of the series. It's not as good as the first two but it is still a decent sequel to the Alien series.

Your movie analysis is greatly appreciated. I did not follow all the behind scene activity of Alien 3 so lot of this is new to me. It is redundant to state that Alien and Aliens are two of best sci-fi/horror movies ever produced. Unfortunately everything went downhill from there, including the disaster called Prometheus.

I'm one of the minority that loves Alien 3. While I acknowledge it must've been hell to make given the studio interference, the end result is somber, depressing yet beautifully shot and very well acted. Not perfect by a long shot, but I still find something interesting about it.
@999SickBoy6667 жыл бұрын
Granted, _Alien3_ has its problems but I still find it vastly superior to _Aliens_ . This is not to say that Cameron's installments is bad: it isn't, but it's a "dumb" action/sci-fi movie: it has memorable sequences, great performances and iconic moments, to be sure, but (much like "Terminator 2" did with "Terminator") it took what was a dark, gritty, theme-laden horror concept and turned it into just another action flick that's in no way challenging to the viewer, at all. _Alien 3_ pretty much forces the audience to relate with characters that are really difficult to relate to. It dares put its main character in some very bad, very dark places and, in doing both of these things, it brings back the thematic richness that was intrinsic to the source material, while still having action and thrilling sequences. I'd honestly rewatch _Alien 3_ over _Aliens_ any day.
