Guys I get it, I was wrong about The Predator. 😅This video came out 2 YEARS before that film released. And yes, Prey is the best sequel - I wish the Predator itself had a little more moment-to-moment character; think him looking around the trap and not going in whilst Arnie is yelling "come on, I'm here" - Hall's performance as the Predator in the first film just came out more. There was also a lack of gore, for me. It was nice to see lots of BLOOD, but guts and gore (and general getting human trophies) was a little lacking, plus the CG didn't help. That said, it's a great small scale, intense flick with a simple, uncomplicated story. The final fight was a little confused second-to-second, but it all came together really well. Big fan.

I didn't dislike the movie the predator all that much it was ok, more watchable that AvP. What I didn't like was how much comedy was written Into the script, way too much comedy. And let's face it, the action stars of today aren't even close to the guys in the 80s in terms of masculinity. The only writer that can recreate the feeling of 80s action movies is stallone. Rambo last blood was awesome.

One thing I love about this movie is that Schwarzenegger actually plays a *smart* character. Dutch is able to deduce quite a lot on very little information. He figures out the predator's tactics and motives, despite having no obvious analogue, and the cat and mouse game at the end where he basically single handedly sets up an anti-predator fun house with nothing more than a knife and a bit of boy scout ingenuity.
@Sifer2
@Sifer2 7 жыл бұрын
It makes sense considering he plays the commanding officer of the group. It's probably the most cerebral role you could cast a guy that looks like Arnold in, and have it be believable. Well aside from the Terminator which is smart because it's a computer. lol

I agree. IMO is maybe one of the bests (if not the best) Schwarzenegger roles ever. Although he has some memorable unintentionally funny lines as in other movies ("GET TO THE CHOPPA!!"), I also think he overall did a good acting work there.

@Sextus70

+NavySharkz One of the things that really helped to make the "Predator" character so memorably imposing and terrifying is how well done is the contrast between him and Dutch. The fact that a man in his peak physique is not able to hurt a Yautja in the slightest with his own strength tells a lot of how superior those monsters are to an human being.

You could even subtract the "happy" part. He's got the 1,000 yard stare and is not even acknowledging anyone who is around him. He's totally gutted, metaphorically. He's lost all his team, which were like his family. He's lost a good friend in Dillon. And he barely escaped with his life fighting a creature no one will believe ever existed.

Not tons of computer shit that ruins it 8.) Believable setting and story 9.) Not putting Arnold in the focus 10.) Not these kind of happy-ending-movies 11.) A cast of known actors that do not try to wipe the others out 12.) A movie you can show your girl, until even she tries to make the predator sound or remembers it when you do it 13.) What I love most about Predator is its subversion of what we expect from an action film. We have this group of super masculine, confident manly men. Body building commandos able to destory a compound of drug runners like its nothing, carrying big guns and tearing through people. And when faced with Predator they don't stand a chance. He is bigger than them, he is stronger than them, he is a more efficient killer than them. He reduces one to a terrified mess, traumatizing him. Predator picks them off one by one, but that's just because it wants to. It was clear he could easily destroy all of them, besting their best efforts to trap him. It was only until Dutch's entire team died that he was able to find a way to fight Predator, and that was through a sheer accident when he was covered with mud, giving him a way to fight back. Excellent movie, my favorite Action movie of all time.

So the predator played off their stupidity and weakness, picking them off and messing with them to drive them into paranoia, but it fucked up because it underestimated Dutch's cunning wit. Dutch was always observant and methodical, keeping a level head and figuring shit out before everyone else. Its like he was studying the creature even while it was attacking them. Thats freaking genius.

When you pointed out that a 2nd unit director handled the raid on the rebel's base, I suddenly had a realization that it might have benefited the film as a whole. Allow me to explain: See, my understanding of the Predator is that its supposed to fool you into thinking its a standard 80's action film with the musclebound heroes with big guns mowing down cannon fodder, throwing one liners, and blowing the place up. And then subverts it and gives it a twist by introducing an unseen invincible threat that suddenly turns it into a thrilling survival horror movie.

One of the things that makes Predator work for me is that Dutch (Schwarzenegger) comes so very close to losing. Despite the fact he defeats the Predator, it is tempting to call this one a draw. It's not even clear (at least to me) if he will survive his injuries. In any good story, the protagonist must struggle, and that struggle is brilliantly shown in this movie.
@KindredBrujah
@KindredBrujah 6 жыл бұрын
Agreed. If not for sheer good-fortune (the mud), he'd have had no chance at all. Even at the end, he doesn't kill the Predator with his own hand, he just injures it sufficiently that it decides to take them both out by blowing itself up.

Bruce Carroll To call Dutch and the Predator equals is asinine. The Pred wasted Hopper's team, Dutch's team, countless guerilla, sniffed out the mud camo, beat him to a pulp, toyed with him, avoided his spike trap and just so happened to stand in the perfectly wrong place. It'd be like you beating up your brother then as you walk him down to finish him, a semi barrels through your living room and kills you.

Exactly. This is why I really dislike Predator 2. That sense of overwhelming power of the Predator from the first film is severely diminished in the sequel. Danny Glover is not some hardened green beret, and yet he defeats the city hunter in hand-to-hand combat almost effortlessly and survives to waltz away on his two feet. It makes the predator, as a creature, seem like a big joke, and all sense of dread and tension, and the feeling of "being hunted" is totally absent from the movie. Instead, we get the predator mimicking "funny" lines for comedic effect, and Gary Busey wearing a tinfoil suit.

@piotrd.4850 5 жыл бұрын
@@snozzlehead92 actually, I attribute it to difference between two Predators. First one is discerning, honed, experienced Hunter. Second is young, driven by passion, ambition but without experience - that's why it chooses warzone instead of jungle, that's why it is going to rake up kills .... understand: thing that Predator I did works only once. That's why in later movie, they kept protagonists in the dark, but not the viewer.

This movie perfectly combines action, horror, sci-fi and suspense with a strong undercurrent of friendship between the characters and a superb, almost invincible villain. nice point. and I thought it was a nice pivot point for the movie, a false ending (the mission ended, but the real action just began), yes it used common action movie tropes and payoffs, but for many movie goers it paid off the ticket price right then and there, offsetting the suspense.

And I think Films looked a lot better when they were actually shot on Film, had so much richness, colour, texture, grain, Digital is just high definition but even then; it's flat and bland, Digital's like Tap Water and Film is like Gin, so start shooting with actual film cameras again folks.

This film also had the benefit of being released after other great films such as Terminator and Aliens. These type of films are and always will be groundbreaking in the since they elevated the science fiction and action genres into what we have today.

I think why people diss it isn't because it was a bad movie, but because it had soooooo much potential and didn't live up to it. Predator 2 had a great concept (taking the action to a major city to distinguish itself from the first movie), a solid cast that was very different from the first film (instead of elite troops the main heroes are 3 very underdog cops: Danny Glover's middle aged main cop, Bill Paxton's mouthy upstart cop and Maria Conchito Alonso's tough as nails pregnant cop) and an expansion of the Predator mythos. It could've easily been great if the director, producers and studio put the care into it that the creative team had put into the original.

Predator 2 is technically a very well made film and highly entertaining. However, its biggest problem is its tone - there is zero warmth or emotion in that movie. Compare it to this movie where you have scenes of the soldiers mourning their fallen comrades or just having some friendly banter with one another - it adds so much to a film. That scene in the original on the helicopter where Poncho throws a piece of rolled up paper at Hawkins (which he catches without even looking) and both kinda just look at each other and smile, says more about the characters and their kinship with one another than the entire film of Predator 2 put together does with its characters. You've got to have some human element to a film to make it resonate with people (which explains the popularity of Arnold's Predator). Predator 2's closing scene is two guys angrily confronting each other and the other calling him an asshole when he runs off. Kinda sums it up haha.

I think the reason for the film's success is the concept. For a film that's an Arnold actioner, it's completely out of left field. Sure, this could have been another cheap Alien-based knockoff, but like that film, Predator had very good characters, a good storyline, and filmmakers who cared about the film. In truth, this film came out of the blue, because for years, nearly every Arnold film had him being able to overcome obstacles without him having to do a lot of thinking. And in this film, he's challenged because not only has he been lied to by his former best friend about the mission, but he's faced with a psychological dilemma. He and his men have never encountered such a being as the Predator, and when they start dying one by one, a sense of claustrophobia begins to set in....And that's because no matter which way they turn, the Predator has a one-up on the team due to its technology, and its hunting capabilities.

I just watched Predator 2 this evening and goddamn, it's not bad when you get down to it but it is a let down. A real shame, I think: it could still been claustrophobic in the urban jungle. I remember seeing the vhs cover at my local video store, it was just Arnie and a big fuck off gun in the jungle, and the word PREDATOR. I always thought it just an army flick until I watched it when I was 11. Mind blown!

Finally, someone who can explain why this is such a good movie in a more eloquent way than my attempt to mimic arnie's scream when people say it's trash! I'd love to see you do a video like this on the first Conan film, as the commentary kind of sums up the perfect mixing of Laurentis' attempts to make it esoteric and Arnie's dry humour which pervades the piece.

While it may just be me rationalizing things to sweep away criticism, I like how the first big action sequence kinda feels like a standard 80's era Arnold movie. It makes the left turn the movie makes once the Predator comes to play hit that much harder.

Alien vs. Predator: Requiem (2007): 1 star/4 stars 5. Predators (2010): 3 stars/4 stars ... let's hope Shane Black's "The Predator" coming in 2019 properly does the original (and best rendition to date) justice.

There are few movies which you can watch over and over again yet they never get old. Predator falls into this catagory. Over 30 years later and somehow it still gets better every time you watch it. Superb acting, ridiculously awesome script, and more action and originality that may never be surpassed in another action flick. Arnold's greatest movie by far.

The cinematography was unbelievable, it was muted but felt so organic and crisp. the brightest thing in some shots was a patch of dirty skin, and some of the wide angle shots showing them moving an interacting with the jungle looked as real as they must have felt, it didn't feel like a set, it felt like un-tampered environment. I believe, though, that Bill Duke as Mac actually turned in the best performance next to Kevin Peter Hall as the Predator.

I never knew that the base fight was another director. Personally for me it’s even better that there was such a juxtaposition between the way the film was shot here to later. To me this was to lull the audience into believing this to be just another ‘action film’ but then totally changing that in the second half. It’s two films in one and that was why it always worked so flawlessly IMO. It’s also hilarious and adds a lot of fun to the film making it so nostalgic to watch years later and a classic.

Such a great insight about the 2nd unit directing the base attack scene. No lie, I have probably seen Predator more than 50 times in my life, I watched it endlessly with friends growing up. Each time that scene sticks out as slightly goofy and OTT compared to the rest which is just masterful. It's great to know why.

First saw the scene of the squad fast roping from the chopper when my cousin was watching the movie and this was around 2002-2003. I was only 10 years old. Since I was a big military fan i watched it once thrn twice and by now i probably i watched it almost 5-10 times. Its a timeless classic.

I'm glad you took the time to point out that, apart form all the other brilliant things about this classic movie, it just looks fantastic. I've always though this. Every shot is perfectly framed, lit & composed. You can tell that the guy controlling things on the other side of the camera is a true artist, and McTiernan is certainly that.

No no no bro, try to think of it this way, every one of the guys in the group looked at billy ass the badass he is and the uniquely smart tracker and all with the badass machete right. And then towards the end he does his thing with the gun tossing and cutting himself on purpose which makes his presige and badass was even more so. Then the movie cuts to him yelling showing his head being carried off by you know who. Shortly after the predator takes out Poncho right. To me this sets up and all the more makes the final battle with arnold more scary. Because you at this point still haven't seen anybody try to take it on heads up (no pun intended) Anyways thought I try to change your mind. And don't get me wrong I too would like to have seen what if any fight did Billy put up against the Predator. At least they could have made an alternate scene and put it the extras part of the movie.

I think it's a great film in showing expectations, and then driving a car right through those expectations. Everyone expected this movie to be another "Arnold shooter with big guns". Which granted part of it is just that. But it slowly peals that back and shows a taught horror/thriller movie that makes Arnold, someone who defined masculinity and heroism in the 80s and 90s, and makes him the hunted, the vulnerable target. Just a great movie with shattering expectations.

What i think that makes this movie work so well is, the team isn't going into the jungle to hunt a alien monster. They go straight in trying to rescue people then it turns into something else entirely different. Watching them going in so confident in themselves, then Watching them in confusion, horror, then helplessness. Wow! What a movie! In my top 5

I still believe there is a better cut from Black, that the studio sadly had almost completely reshot. We won't see it though, and I doubt there's gonna be a Snyder cut type support for it. I need to rewatch The Predator, but in the cinema after a couple of beers I dug most of it.

from a personal view,i think what makes this movie really enjoyable and terrifying,beside of being technically a masterpiece (acting,special effects,score,etc.),is how all of the main characters are badass smart men fighting a monster who is not only armed to teeth,but also phisically imposing,with a smart mind,who knows what it is doing the first part of the movie makes clear what the protagonists are capable,so it is difficult for the viewer to guess who is going to die next (except maybe for hawkins),it makes you hard to believe how everyone is being slaghtered one by one,considering how all of they have a strong personality (wich makes you love every single of them) every fight scene has its own level of epicness,though as the movie goes on,it makes you feel really pessimistic on how things are going to end,it makes you even doubt if schwarzenegger's character is going to survive,and how i think that dutch is one of the better designed characters ever for arnold schwarznegger,because he has to fight the ultimate monster not only with his muscles,but also using his mind,and relying with scarce resources at his disposable,and barely winning in a desperate fight wich is everything but a foregone conclusion

This may sound crazy, but I've always thought the movie would make for an excellent theater play. A central jungle theater, very memorable small cast of character carrying the entire film, and a dark villain emphasizing his lack of presence for most of the film rather than focusing specifically on action. It's more about the interactions between characters. I've seen some amazing things done in modern theater, and I'd love to see an adaptation of this. How it would offer the perspective of the predator with lighting and sound. How it would change the set to offer a sense of progression. Smoke, fog, water, darkness, fire, laser lights, bright hues and shadows. The lack of geometry aids in Predator dramatically because it removes the environment as a physical thing and more of an atmosphere. The jungle becomes bonded to the characters and not just part of the background.

Why is Predator so good? A great script by Jim Thomas and John Thomas(inspired by 'The Most Dangerous Game'), a fantastic cast supporting Arnold Schwarzenegger, Academy Award-nominated special effects, fantastic creature effects from the legendary Stan Winston(with input from James Cameron), a great musical score by Alan Silvestri, and a timeless 80s atmosphere that reminds everyone why the 80s were the greatest decade and why we desperately need another decade like it.
