So let me get this straight...the protomorphs can impregnate a host through spores and have an extremely short gestation and growth period. How is it that the original Alien is an improvement on the design?

That one point I thought was handled poorly. To me the spores, and the neomorphs seemed scarier and deadlier or at least as deadly as the protomorph/xeno. It didn't make sense to me, that David adding the need for eggs and facehuggers and such, was really him perfecting what was already there, as much as a convoluted excuse for him to 'create something with shaw'. Maybe if they showed the xeno kill the neomorphs, or do something beyond their capabillity it would work for me. I actually think the xeno should only be seen as an egg/facehugger embryo in the end and then in the next film, they could show the missing link: David connecting the biological alienparts with the mechanical and then making perfection: bio-mechanical life, the xenomorphtype from Alien 79.

Aeternuss I think the reason the first prequel was called Prometheus rather than, say, Alien: Prometheus was because they realised it was too far removed from the previous movies to be identified as an Alien film. Prometheus was more about the crew and the Engineers; the aliens were just a side-note as a weapon the Engineers had created. It made a lot more sense to me having now watched this one.

You pretty much summed up every problem I had with the movie. The 2 biggest that I had was 1. the captain just blindly trusting David like you said, and not having any problem with this cave of creepy eggs? And "hey, I can totally trust him now. Lets take a look in this egg." And 2. The David/Walter switcharoo.OMG it was so blatantly obvious. And Daniels just blindly trusting him too? Seriously, after everyhing that happened I would be keeping an eye on everyone that was on the planet with me. I was waiting for her to ask him a question that only Walter would know the answer to. It's too bad for her she waited for that moment until she was completely vulnerable and his his will/mercy. I still liked this movie much, much more than Prometheus. But this one took a bunch of stuff from the previous Alien movies, but didn't do them as well as the earlier entries.
@garysmith30377 жыл бұрын
Thinking about it, there was no real reason for the switch. If David hadn't given himself away so much on the planet, he could have left with them on the colony ship. He still could have had the facehugger embryos hidden on him and use them later. It would have been just him and Walter on the ship, and he could have taken out Walter easily, then done whatever he wanted to.

ALIEN: COVENANT sucks. No one is angrier than I. What happened? Did Scott ghost-direct this film? It feels like fan-service. It makes Prometheus both better in contrast and worst in how it destroys all groundwork laid in that previous movie. The music, the plot beats, even whole scenes, appear stolen from better films in the series. The effects are shockingly bad in places, the story was entirely predictable, and most the characters were utterly useless. There was so much potential; I had read what Scott had intended with “Paradise” (the original name of the film), and none of that can be found here. This is not just a bad film for the franchise; it’s bad film for Ridley Scott-I’m talking White Squall bad. Love it or hate it, but Prometheus had a point; it asked questions. It didn’t answer them all, but I was invested in the idea that that may be addressed later. With Alien Covenant, it’s not only as bad a follow-up as Alien Resurrection, it's also bad in a Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen sort of way, where you start to think the writers had a stroke at some point during production. And for the first time, an ALIEN film concluded in the worst way possible. The entire audience saw it coming twenty minutes earlier. There was no excitement, no satisfaction, just a depressing exhale like stabbing a whoopee cushion and letting the air leak out without a sound. Alien Covenant does nearly everything wrong, making me question any longevity in this license. I was ready to defend it against the detractors, but they are unfortunately correct. It’s bad, and I’m still angry.

SPOILERS: This movie had so many problems: -Why is there only 1 shuttle for a 2000 person crew? -Why go down to a planet in the middle of a storm that blocks communication? -Why not wear spacesuits on the planet when you don't know anything about the biology down there? -Why not map the surface of the planet from orbit so you can see where to land? -If they had mapped the surface, they would notice the Engineer city from orbit. -Send a probe first, not people! -The idiots on the planet breathe in alien plant spores, DEEPLY! -Everybody turns into yelling idiots as soon as the aliens infect people. They deserve to die. -Why did they assume they were safe as soon as they went to the city? The alien could still follow them, and it did. -David created what we know as xenomorphs. WTF! -The captain trusted David to show him something downstairs. -The captain trusted David when he got a facehugger to the face! -Why did Danny McBride no longer worry about the pathogen infecting the rest of the ship when he went down to the planet? -Why bring up the captain was religious? Was never mentioned again. Bad screenwriting. -Why were the engineers anticipating the engineer ship returning? They were looking up and reaching their hands out. Why? The more I think about it the more I dislike this movie. Too bad. I wanted to like it.

YES!! -Why did they land 8 kilometers away? -Why did they land in the water and not the land that was about 100 feet away? -Why did they not do a flyover of the signal sight? -When did David swallow the embryos and how did they fit perfectly in with the others? -How was it that the weather was terrible 40 kilometers above the storm but no rain or wind on the land towards that end of the movie.. I was also hoping to love it. There were only a couple good scenes in the movie.

I'm really worried for the Blade Runner sequel now. It's scary to think that for almost 4 decades, Ridley hasn't known exactly _why_ people liked the original Alien. I seem to recall him saying some time after Prometheus something to the effect of "they want the bloody Alien? I'll give them the bloody Alien." He just does _not_ understand his own film. He apparently has some sort of concept ("Jesus was an Engineer, don't ya know...") to shove down people's throats (get it?) and this time he really just screwed the whole thing up by cramming a campy horror sci-fi "romp" into the mix. He's definitely in his George Lucas phase now. Apparently, nobody can tell him what to do and now we are reaping the "benefits". I just can't wait for the next film now. Ugh... I almost wish he wasn't allowed to do it and they just stopped. Cliffhanger notwithstanding... :/

I agree with how they rushed using the xenomorphs. They could have introduced the facehugger earlier in the film like David secretly drugging one of the crewmembers and giving him a facehugger that would become a xenomorph later in the film. In my opinion, the film should have focused on the Prometheus storyline. Arguably, one scene that kinda ruined the film for me was girl slipping up on the blood from the neomorph. It's felt like a slapstick so much that it made me laugh. A horror film shouldn't do that if it takes itself too seriously. And based on the ending, I really hope that they won't kill off the characters we were introduced to in Alien: Covenant.

Didn't feel as shockingly stupid as Prometheus, but the more you think about the movie the worse it gets. Why didn't they scan the planet for cities or structures? Took them 3 weeks to get there, why rush down in the middle of a storm? Just wait out the storm in orbit and then go take a look. WHY didn't they take the slightest precaution with an unknown ecosystem? Environment suits would have ended the threat before it began. Why was Tennessee having so much trouble keeping the flying crane ship stable? Even before the crane was released he was all over the place. I got more but that's enough.
@jasonblalock44297 жыл бұрын
Another thing is, it's possible to have characters in a horror movie make bad choices without it seeming like bad *writing*, but it needs to be well-established. Like Aliens. Cameron set things up immaculately in the first act. The Colonial Marines are legitimately badasses with so many successes under their belt that they've gotten lazy and cocky. (Even Apone is pretty lax.) Then they get a completely inept LT who clearly thought this would be a milk run. Bam, you've got a fine explanation in place for why, when the shit really hits the fan, the squad falls apart. It had been so long since they'd faced true danger that - without a competent leader - they panicked and got destroyed. It makes perfect sense, under the circumstances.
@MrCaptnrex7 жыл бұрын
1- The storm was all over the planet, if they couldn't communicate they weren't going to be able to get a in detail scan 2- Because if its a SoS they didn't want weeks-months more to help whoever was down there (as david said they last a long time) 3- Because it was VERY earth-like, and honestly its a movie and whose to say the spores wouldn't have gotten into their suits anyway? I wouldn't want to watch a movie where 1/3-1/2 the movie they are in stupid suits. 4- Turbulence?

I did like the film, though I do understand your reasons for why Alien: Covenant didn't deliver. I was disappointed at how the Prometheus story-line about the Engineers was kind of thrown aside. I'm not sure how true this is, but I read something about how Scott had a totally different idea where he wanted to go after Prometheus, but because fans complained so much about Prometheus lacking xenomorphs and due to how poorly the film was received, Scott scrapped his idea and gave the fans what they wanted (no thanks to executive meddling once again too). Would have been interesting to see just where he wanted to go.

The whole switcheroo with David was obvious. Why didn't the spores from the pod plants kill the infected crew immediately? Assuming it was a similar strain, it wasted the Engineers in pretty short order. Why the need to morph into a less effective, more complex organism? Or were the plants more of David's creations as methods to transmit the spores to wildlife? Why was David's access code still valid on a ship (and operating system) built years later with no knowledge of his survival or whereabouts. How did David manage to change clothes, cut off his hand, and ingest 2 embryos so quickly? Why did Tennessee have such a tough time flying the cargo shuttle? The weather looked pretty calm when Daniels runs out into the plaza with all the corpses. So many questions...!

Seriously, UGH. I cannot believe they went that direction with the story. IMO, this is well into midichlorians territory, in terms of "explaining" something that didn't even need to be explained in the first place in a completely stupid way that just makes things worse. All the mystery surrounding the xenomorphs has been destroyed, and replaced with such trite BS that it feels like it trivializes Alien and Aliens by extension.

Okay, I have two knee jerk reactions to that idea: Either David is lying to give himself some sort of credibility, or he only modified a version of the Xeno that didn't start as a chestburster. I only say this because Prometheus already contradicts his own explanation, and I REALLY don't want this to be the canon origin of the Xenomorphs.
@StrikeTeam997 жыл бұрын
I really hope the xenos in the movie are just a new strain based on the chestburster being fully shaped not a snakelike one. Also xenos were on the mural in prometheus. Finally the spore thing seems almost like an idea from one of the older alien three scripts that had space communists. Also in the novelization of covenant david admits his xeno are based on a egg he found on the engineer planet and that he didn't really invent them explaining the wierd chest burster that came out of the captain.

There were two things which I loved about this movie. The scene where Walter was teaching David how to play the flute was very well done. It was the best scene in the movie. Michael Fassbender interacting with Michael Fassbender (of course the acting would be great) but it was very impressive to see this all in one long take. I can only guess that one of the Fassbenders was a double and Mike was superimposed on top of him. I'm sure I remember some blurry edges around the Fassbender on the right side of the screen. If this scene is explained in the special features/commentary of Covenant then I may have to buy it. I can't think of an example of the same actor interacting with their self in such a way before, including Dead Ringers. The second was a lightning strike in the background and we didn't hear it until a second or two later without the time difference being mentioned by a character! Seeing lightning and hearing it at the same time always disappoints me (I'm a sound engineer), but not enough to make a difference to the film.

I think they showed the breakdown of Orin mentally, albeit not always on screen, but him laying face down in the mud after his wife is killed/talking to Daniels, plus in the beginning they showed his strange inability to lead straight from the first scenes, butting heads with crew and claiming to be thought of as a fanatic for having "faith". I agree with the faster gestation time, but I also think that has to do with the infancy of the alien life form in the proto state, which makes sense when the neomorph gestation time is much faster. This is potentially the first time that the "big chap" has been borne, david saying that the one thing he lacked was a host. This is all conjecture really, but it made sense to me in a way.

I can't help but get a bit of the BvS sort of feeling that there are huge junks of the movie missing that could have fixed many of the issues with it. Maybe when it hits BR we'll see a director's cut that improves it? I really think a few extra minutes of film could go a long way in terms of the pacing.

I agree, convincing the audience that there is one alien in the beginning and later with several aliens would have been a great reveal. DISCLAIMER: I haven't seen the movie. How about, making it a murder/mystery where Daniels has to piece things together? Daniels, revived by Walter from cryo, discovers some of the crew had woken up from earlier and have been murdered/killed. practically every room on Covenant is a crime scene. Ships logs tell them they've stopped by a planet and took off again. Maybe Daniels decides to wake up some more of the crew to help but the computer only allows certain people to be revived? after hearing Daniels out, maybe some of the crew don't believe her. Maybe there's a decision to change course and head back to this planet they landed previously; perhaps find more answers. Maybe a reveal can be that some of the revived crew are infected with xeno embryos? It'll be a slow burn with lots of panicking and dire moments until people start chestbursting. I dunno, I'm just trying to be creative.

It seems that Ridley was tied to two hours when for me it needed to be 2:30 at least. I liked the movie but the cgi bugged me. Use practical effects please

not sure why people were so upset at your first review. I watched that yesterday and went to see the film today. I agree with a lot of what you said. I guess the one confusing aspect was saying there weren't many aliens in it so I didn't expect as much as there was. You cleared up what you meant here tho.

I'm just thankful Franco died early. Also David didn't create the alien unless they scrapped the Alien lore from the first film and Prometheus which shows an engraved wall with a alien queen, face-huggers, and egg openings. My guess or hope is that David "learned of their ways" and simply copied or reverse engineered their technology. It might be possible that the Engineers from the film before are themselves engineered by their creator to colonize/seed other worlds with life like themselves as they do at the beginning of Prometheus. I believe that they later rebelled just as David did.

I might've given them some props for killing off a star if I'd known it was James Franco and had seen his character before they decided to torch him in the opening 10 minutes. I only saw it was him when she was looking at a video of him afterwards, and even then, I wasn't 100% sure it was Franco who was the captain, or the other dude in the video with him.

Quick question for David. Uhm, how is an animal with no self preservation skills, inability to reproduce on it's own, and super aggressive (as in it just kills everything with no mean to have hosts to reproduce.) the perfect organism? As silly as it is, the Predator making them as the ultimate game makes more sense then this.

Did it bother you that the film was titled Alien: Covenant instead of just "Covenant?" and did it bother you the synthetics name was Walter, instead of starting with an "E?"

Personally for me, despite it being two hours, the movie moved so fast. At least it felt like it. And while the only character that felt really fucking stupid was the captain/ first face hugger victim there were some "really" moments in there. Even though there was a crew of fifteen it seemed that some of them just died off screen, no impact, it really didn't feel like thirteen people died. Also who the fuck decided to have shower sex after eleven of the crew died, wtf Is that shit.

I had a problem with the captain following David to his murder basement when I saw it. I felt like the guy who would be screaming, "don't go with him you idiot!" But then I thought about it. The captain was a man of faith, he was tired from the impact of stressful events (which were serious), David was a synth, and he was absent during the alien shootemup. He had no reason to be suspicious of David. He may have a different perspective, when we all watched David communicate to the neomorph. We all watched it knowing that David was full on creep. He watched David, as a synth, trying to calm an unknown creature (not an engineered killer), and then trying to explain something to Billy scientifically. We all know how people generally respond to scientific explanations. A reminder, we all know the synth David, but Billy doesn't know that. Most of his interactions with synths might be with Walter. I think the biggest problem was the captain-billy's death. He was a good solid Character, and would have made a great lead to the scifi movie. If Scott moved away from a female lead formula, Billy would have been a great role for the movie. I say it was the biggest problem because Dany, it felt like, was lazily put as a checkmark. And we knew she was going to be the lead, because of all the marketing material (that's a big goof from their marketing team). On the other hand, Billy had a better development. He was trying to make good on the crew. The death of his partner was more heartfelt. He made a call, but regrets it later. He had a good three acts structure. His resolution was his death, sadly. Your review had 2-3 good points. a.) Incubation time, b.) alien ripoff, c.) sloppy. But your review was weak, and I expected a review, not a hatchet job. It felt like you were just out to get the Alien Covenant film. I'm saying that because you barely pointed out the real positives of the film, which makes the core of a really good film. 1.) Exhilarating music when David proclaims his creation, 2.) the return of the hypersexed overtone, 3.) David trying to figure out how sex works, 4.) SYNTH v. SYNTH A'la Blade Runner.
@PrydePierceFilms7 жыл бұрын
I'd agree with your points about the captain except for the fact that the captain specifically stated and acted suspicious of David "I saw the Devil once as a child" - *points gun at David* ie he feels that David is the Devil. After that level of suspicion, then the creep factor as you see David manipulate the black goo and discuss how he has been engineering these alien killers, it is amazingly hard to believe anyone would be stupid enough to plant their face over any alien egg that just opened up. That is regardless of what you think/know is coming out of it. The only normal thought process would be "Whatever comes out of that thing cannot be good." A believable route would have been for David to somehow knock out/capture the Captain and then have forced his face over the egg.
@streampunksheep7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that would have been believable. The movie was just sloppy and rushed.

I went with an open mind into this and since I didnt have too high expectations I must say I kinda liked it. It has very good cinematography and Michael Fassbender is awesome as always. This movie also has a very cold and creepy atmosphere as well as some gory kills. The characters have zero depth and the story has some questinable plotholes but all in all I dont think its the worst in the series and I slightly liked it better than Prometheus.

Echoing my thoughts exactly, I've never been so disappointed by an Alien film and that includes Resurrection.The complaints - 1. One of the things I went in with was the assumption that we were going to get to explore the engineers. Instead we get literally nothing, we don't even know what connection this world had to the aliens. 2. People site similar mistakes were made in ALIEN however it's made very clear that the miners in ALIEN weren't given any choice. Their reasons were very logical, investigate or lose their jobs. In Covenant a colony ship of thousands chooses to investigate a John Denver song on the radio. It wasn't even a distress beacon. No one in their right mind would risk thousands of lives to investigate a radio anomaly. 3. The big mistake in Prometheus was early on in the film and would have worked better if a scene wasn't cut. In Covenant the mistakes are coooooooonstant. I mean like every 5 minutes some one does something stupid. Abnormally stupid. This phrase is uttered "I gotta go wash up" "Don't go far" and you knnnnnnnnnow they're dead and the captains mistake is probably the worst, but certainly not the only. On top of all the stupid mistakes It was just a weirdly bland movie. There's no payoff at any point really. Nothing interesting happens. I'm not sure why Ridley thought anyone would care about such a minor evolution. All that so we see the white alien be black. Why should we care? I've officially lost faith Ridley Scott after this, I don't see myself paying for another one of his movies ever again. I'm so frustrated that Neil Blomkamps Alien project was shut down for this.
@Bigwayne19847 жыл бұрын
to be the devils advocate, you don't really know the time gaps of gestation. for example, once they got back on the main ship, daniels is fast asleep when she gets called....and David is clearly bored just throwing rocks at the captain. call it poor pacing, but it could be 4 or 5 hours between.
@JR-er4qv7 жыл бұрын
Dude love your reviews and 99% of the time my opinions are in line with yours i.e. Batman v Superman director cut being good. I do think the pacing of this movie was a bit off, but I just want to say that if you were expecting this to be the original then I think you were going into this movie with the wrong mindset, it's a sequel to Prometheus and if you think about what David was programmed to do, and what he might have done to Shaw, then there is plenty of continuity with Prometheus. Anyway, give it another go when it hits DVD and try to ignore the bad title, which I agree is misleading, and don't let preconceived notions get in the way of an overall good and entertaining movie. Also, The fact that people freaked out in high pressure/intensity situations made it feel more real to me, but I can see why that has annoyed some people. Anyway, your videos are awesome and even when I disagree you still get a thumbs up. Keep up the killer content, one of my favorite channels.

I'm really trying to understand the films right now. Like if david made the xeno from selective breeding and what not then sure, I'll go with it, but when did ze goo turn into sentient spore pods? and why does the neo come from spores yet the goo hyper evolves things into xeno zombies or falic snakes? what gets me even more is why the engineers already had murals of the xeno if the neo was all they knew about? but if the goo turned into the spores then how did they even know about the neo in the first place?? I have so many questions but can't get any answers from re-watching. sorry if I sound like an idiot but the Alien franchise definitely explained a lot more of the xeno, prometheus just flipped everything I knew on its head.

As you say it's all about personal tastes bud, I watched it last night and loved it, I thought it was a lot better then Prometheus (which I liked) had lots of decent horror/action scenes and I right enjoyed it, as did most of the people in the cinema judging by the comments I heard after it had finished. Compare this to say AVPR and you might see it in a better light lol Not the best Alien film in the franchise but it's definitely not the worst either (3rd best for me after Aliens and Alien) Keep them coming pal, you're one of the few channels I'm subscribed to that haven't spat thier dummies out and stopped uploading after the ADpocalypse lol.

I liked it up until they got back on the convenient. I really liked the first 3rd of the movie. The back bursting scene was frightening. Ironically when the xenomorph finally shows up, that's when I started to feel like the movie was going off the rails.

Jaw Knee alien convenient, now that is a fitting title for how convenient is was for david that the crew of the covenant were dumber than the spacetruckers from alien
@bturner9997 жыл бұрын
The biggest problem of all is that had the crew had the common sense to wear some space helmets before setting out onto an alien planet (regardless of whether or not sensor reading bullshit showed oxygen similar to earth etc.) they could have avoided the whole thing (or most of it anyway). The fact that they didn't even acknowledge that maybe diseases exist on alien worlds that humans aren't yet accustomed to and so they ought to take every precautionary measure really killed any immersion fast. How does anybody take this movie seriously? The crew consistently makes stupid decisions such as this, and nobody was likable in the slightest.

+GoodBadFlicks What do you think? I think what they should have done was just called it Covenant and had it set to where the Covenant had received an incoming S.O.S. so Walter wakes up the crew. So the crew sends out of course the dropships with them in suits incase the air wasn't breathable. Then they come to find the air is breathable and of course there was the one guy that gets impregnated by the molts of the small egg sacks so after exploring around the area they do come across the Neomorphs and were saved by David, hence forth the David part of the story, confirming it a sequel to Prometheus. The crew member that was infected then starts feeling the effects of the bloodburster so Walter takes him to David only to find out that David has been doing experiments and there was no way to save the crew member and disabling Walter. David then grabs the infant bloodburster and takes what he needs for his experiment [the creation of the protomorph] and lures one more crew member to be infected by the now genitically engineered facehugger. The rest of the crew ffind out what was going on with a reactivated Walter and begin destroying the rest of David's work only for him to go mad and kill a few crew members before Walter incapacitates him and left behind to ensure David does not follow back. The crew getting back to the dropship to return back to the Covenant with the one crew member with the facehugger now falling off his face. Walter hurries back to the dropship too and all return back to the Covenant. With all seems back to normal going back on course to their destination time has passed and the one crew member who was infected by the facehugger starts to have chest pains. The crew hear screams and find his/her body with a hole in their chest not knowing what is on the ship. To their knowledge could be another Neomorph but after searching for it comes to realize its not a Neomorph, its a new type of alien they hadn't seen [protomorph] and begins picking off the crew little by little. And how it ends would be the same as the film.
