I think the 4.0 series deserves a refreshed review, the earlier versions did look a little bit gimmicky but it looks like they've done a lot of work on the design.

So a couple things. First if all you wanted was an appendix holster you could have gotten that and it wouldn't have cost $100. Second the whole reason for this setup is for people who do change their carry position and even gun on a halfway regular basis. I used this holster with my 1911 carrying every day 8+ hours per day for almost a year and had no issues with it. And once I get the new shell I ordered when I purchased my new gun I will continue to. As far as your friend goes, with their old holsters you did need to lock tight the screws once you figured out where you wanted the clips and retention, just like every other holster I have seen that had adjustable parts that will loosen over time. And this holster is designed to have no screws to avoid that. Alien Gear has never been anything but great to me when it comes to customer service and unlike pretty much any kydex holster maker, if you don't like it send it back.

@speedindeemin4 жыл бұрын
@Bill Dauterive Bill Dauterive Not sure why you came to the conclusion that someone who doesn't use the same, single holster setup forever means they don't know what they are doing. Not every single gun owner from all different areas, backgrounds, jobs, and expertise will carry the same way you do. Maybe they don't want to buy four or five different holsters for different situations they might be in. The kit comes with a standalone mount and the ability to have an additional shell. Maybe this person open carries, and wants to switch to a mount inside their vehicle instead of laying it on the passenger seat, in the glovebox, side pocket, or wherever. I personally don't have one of these kits, but I IWB carry my Shield .45 and I'd love to be able to have the ability to mount it inside my car when I'm driving. Right now I usually place it in the center console cupholders which makes it completely visible to other drivers in traffic, especially higher sitting vehicles (I'm in a compact coupe). Not really ideal because that has a potential to make me a target, and a mount for the car can make it still easily accessible but yet hidden enough. I don't like to lay it on the passenger seat because the leather seats allow it to slide around in turns, and I definitely don't want a loaded firearm sliding around in my car while driving. Other option is my glove box, which I really don't like because I have to reach and do an extra step to gain access. I should mention now that the holster I use for IWB is a full leather holster that uses buttoning loops to attach to my belt and is very clunky and oddly shaped, it's not something I constantly remove so everything I mentioned above is only applicable to my OTHER holster which is appendix carry only and I cannot stand appendix carry therefore it's never used. I only use it if I'm only going to be in my vehicle between home and work. So the only option I have for conceal carry within my vehicle for situations where I'm out of town traveling and will be in and out of public places is my leather IWB which means I don't un-holster the firearm while driving. I could carry my second holster to remove and place somewhere else but I don't like doing that since it's what I also use when it's kept in the house, it's just one more thing I have to carry around and deal with. I'd love to have an OWB holster for this when I go to the range. My IWB is great for conceal draw practice but when I just want to plink with a couple 50 rd boxes I just want something easy to get it in and out of. So this kit is really looking ideal for my particular needs, it fits all the bills and checks all my checks. I'm not a police officer, I'm not a security guard, I don't drive armored trucks and I'm not Jerry Miculek so I don't need a super duper high dollar extra premium holster (or.. 3 for that matter). It's an entire holster system that will work and fit my exact firearm, is modular, and quick and easy to use, for $100. Or I guess I just don't know what I'm doing.

Other than the trigger guard it was very obvious that John went way out of his way to not say anything remotely complimentary about this AlienGear product. In fact, his "theatrics" are so one-sided it's hilarious! In fact, this is the only review of the AGSS Core Carry Pack I have found on YT that doesn't have very positive overall conclusions. Sorry, John, the AGSS Core Carry Pack checks all of the boxes for an outstanding, well engineered, multi-purpose holster. A grand slam for AlienGear!

What John has is the ShapeShift Starter Kit/Carry Pack. It includes enough stuff to setup four different OWB options, an IWB configuration, a surface mount capability, and an appendix configuration. You can also buy just a single configuration. I have the Carry Pack. I agree that the appendix configuration just doesn't work well. I don't use the thumb release either because I find it too hard to press. The other configurations have worked very well for me. I Carry IWB. It's very comfortable and I've found the quality and engineering to be exceptional. Most of the pants I wear for working in my garage don't have enough room for IWB. No problem. It takes less than 60 seconds to switch my holster from IWB to OWB. I've crawled around under cars, laid on the holster, and hung almost upside down with this product and my firearm has never come out of the holster and the holster has never been damaged. This winter I can experiment with OWB with my street cloths without having to buy a new holster and easily switch back to IWB at will. It's the perfect solution for me.

Coincidentally, I just ordered and received two holsters from Alien Gear a week or so ago: The first one was a Shape Shift holster that was set up for my CZ P07, and the second one was a chest holster that was apparently set up for the CZ P07 DUTY, which is different in some unknown way from the the regular P07. I was prepared to modify the holster shell to accommodate my pistol but frankly was hoping that I would like the Shape Shift version because I feel like it has a better chance of being concealable. They offer a 30 day "test drive". I bought the two holsters with the idea that I would return one (or both if I didn't like either one). Oh, one more thing: My P07 has a threaded barrel. With all that said, both products came in black plastic bags, not a fancy box. The first thing I removed from the shipping box was the chest holster. I set it aside without opening it. Everything from now on is related ONLY to the Shape Shift holster. I pulled the Shape Shift holster from the shipping box and removed it from the bag. As I expected, the holster shell was set up for a "non-threaded" barrel so the end was closed. I used my Dremel to remove the material (very easy to do) that kept the barrel from protruding from the holster. Then I adjusted the holster and put it on. I found it to be extremely comfortable, especially in comparison to the Fierce Defender AIWB that I've been wearing for the past couple of years. However, I found that the thumb release was extremely difficult to use, and actually felt a little flimsy because of the effort required to release the pistol. So, here's what I did: I took the holster shell off the backing plate and removed the thumb release--it comes off as a module. I then put the pistol back into the holster and did the inverted "John" test. The pistol fell out without any effort. Then I felt inside the shell to where the retention adjustment thing was and cranked up the retention to where it was too tight, and then backed it off (I also used a 1/4 inch drive tool). The retention was now perfect. Then on a whim, I put the thumb release back in. It worked great! I now have a holster with both friction retention and active retention. It's easy to get the pistol from the holster and easy to get it back in. I am very happy with my Shape Shift holster, and emailed Alien Gear Holsters today to inquire about returning the chest holster. If I had any complaint it would be that their instructions are pretty minimal--probably because of the modular nature of the unit. But that doesn't detract from what I think is a great product otherwise. Next, because it was more than $99 they sent me a free mag carrier, which I guess I can use when I'm AIWB carrying, rather than keeping it in my pocket. Regarding customer service (before the sale admittedly) they worked hard to find me a shell for my fairly uncommon P07. I thought they did more than they had to. And finally, I have no affiliation with them-I just really like the holster. I strongly recommend it.
@SRFDriver2 жыл бұрын
@@forestjones956 Thank you for your kind reply. After using it daily for the past however long I have one issue with it: the holster is rotated too far "down", that is the butt of the pistol is "closer to the ground" than I would like. There appear to be a couple of rotational adjustment holes to allow the shell to be rotated, however I haven't done it yet because a) It appears that the adjustment holes are too far apart to allow me to rotate it just enough to suit my taste but not too far and b) I haven't been able to figure out how to get the straps to release from the backing pad. I'm sure I'll figure it out--I just haven't taken the time to do it. However, I do believe that the lack of ability to rotate my pistol butt to where I want it affects my draw speed, and that's a pretty big deal. I should contact the factory about this...someday lol

@Mike-dm5ut4 жыл бұрын
@Billy G but what he said about the holster "being shitty" wasn't objective but rather subjective. If you look at John's own rules of a good holster. . . this holster passed his test. His complaints were: 1. you have to assemble it (that's clearly understood when purchasing this set). 2. the retention system required another tool to get it loose ( says that's poor manufacturing... uh no that's better as things loosen over time). 3. It's a quarter to half inch bigger than his buddies kydex holster by uh me eye balling it. then he says yea buy any dedicated holster here is three options all from my buddies who you know give me stuff and custom build them to my liking for free. 4. I also know a guy who had a bad experience so the whole thing is crap - but hey I know these guys and they give me the best service (while I carry a firearm that I know the company has shitty service but let's look past that because). 5. Lastly, yea I think this point here will fail and then its useless. . . well yea that's true about any product. again fully subjective shit from a tuber who gets free stuff from his buddies. . . it was a crap review that came in biased. He literally failed his own objective tests he does in every other review.

I gotta tell you John, respectfully, I think you missed the mark on this review my friend. As much as you tried to make it sound unbiased it came out as sounding even MORE biased. I'm sorry for your friend's experience with customer service. I truly am. But I couldn't help but believe that the experience had a profoundly negative impact on your review. Just before I wrote this I borrowed some appendix holsters from some friends and co-workers then went out and bought the Alien Gear Shape Shift kit. Yes, I consider it a kit, not just a holster. Now, a caveat before we go further: I carry at about the eight to nine o'clock position. Inside the waist band, all the time. I say this because I just don't see how you appendix carriers can carry that way. Anyway, I thought you were right. All of the leather and neoprene holsters were by far the most comfortable. However, I couldn't keep some of the holsters from "sinking" a bit as I went about my activities. I just couldn't get the adjustment loops to set and stay where I wanted them and therefore had to go on a quick fishing expedition to make sure I had my grip correct before pulling. Like I said though, all were very comfortable to varying degrees. I also tried some Kydex and even plastic holsters. They would've been alright if the edges and seams had been finished. But I did notice that the weapon felt a little more secure in them. Then the Alien Gear. Like you I "built" an appendix holster first. I don't and won't presume why I didn't have any trouble assembling it but I considered it easy to build. Although bulkier than some of the other holsters it was only about slightly as bulky as most of the others. The weight wasn't as light as I would have liked but I had no problems carrying it the whole day. The two things that set it apart for me was the security of the weapon (I could have been upside down on a trapeze with it and never felt that it was going to pull loose and drop out), and the fact that I could build other holsters or make a hundred of adjustments on the holster to fit exactly as I wanted it to. I do agree that modular holsters aren't for everyone. But it sounds like Alien Gear is at least attempting to make custom pattern shells for as many weapons as possible and provide everything the buyer may need to let the buyer determine how and where on the body they'd like to wear it. One place I WON'T be wearing it ..... appendix. Too close to the boys for me.

@@ASPextra I watch a lot of your videos and you have a lot of good content, personally I think all appendix holsters are bad; on that note though I've never carried appendix (after the Army I've developed a bit of a dunlop myself), I prefer IWB at around 4:30 or open. If you still have that kit laying around would you consider giving your opinion on the other configurations? I'd like to see a review from your perspective (you seem to not like them much) on the quality of the IWB configuration. As a side note I like videos that point out the shortcomings rather than just harping on the good points so I think you could give some good insight on the other configurations. Edit: You don't have to go over how to set up the IWB config, that's easy enough to see; just your opinion on how it fits/feels/carries.

I just got my AGSS last week and am still in testing. I’ve almost always carried OWB for my entire carrying life, so the IWB holsters are new to me as a carry alternative. I think you make the holster changing process overly complicated because it really is simple. I change between the appendix as a belt slide, ankle, and the strong side carriers using two different shells daily to try different guns in different positions with no effort which is where this system shines. If you have multiple guns that you use during the week (for me it’s the M&P 9c and full size), the ability to transfer platforms without buying more holsters is a bonus. On the clips, you can get full loop clips if you worry about things slipping out. I don’t, but I also don’t appendix carry routinely so I haven’t run into that problem. On support, I emailed AG support with a concern last week on one of my shells (minor concern) and they had a replacement in the mail same day. I can’t say that my experience was anything but stellar customer service. From every review I’ve read about AG, your story is unusual. Not saying it didn’t happen, just saying it is the anomaly compared to other reviews. I think your review is your opinion and my jury is still out, but I appreciate dissenting opinions when I evaluate gear and you are one of the few people that don’t like the AGSS system.

Also ignores that there are single holster options from the company, different loops, ECT. John also only tried AIWB which in all fairness, even the guys who review and liked the OWB and/or IWB said the AIWB isn't comfortable or really any good. I don't plan to AIWB at this point so that isn't a concern for me. I suspect that the holster will be good, maybe even very good. Is it going to be like a custom fit and finished holster from a small shop... No, I didn't suspect it will be the creme de la creme. I also doubt it's going to be some Ikea POS. Also find it funny that someone complains about having to put something together, like 3 pieces. You can't put a few plastic pieces together but can field strip a pistol or rifle with fine springs? Never mind that once you put it together in the config you're happy with, you could never change it if you didn't want to. /Sigh, some people will just find things to complain about.

I'm currently running this modular set. In ways, I agree with John, in other ways he is vastly wrong. It's not the best holster system in the world. BUT, I was unsure how I wanted to carry as I am relatively new to ccw. This kit is AMAZING for giving you 4 different options to try. It's a starting point, nothing more, nothing less. From this system you can determine how you like to carry, then move up to a higher quality holster that will cost you more than this entire kit.
@ASPextra4 жыл бұрын
On the one hand I really hear what you're saying, as getting a $100 starter kit gives you some ideas. The challenge is that it's a BAD AIWB holster, so many will try it and think AIWB is bad for them when it's a bad holster and therefore it might not be a bad position for you. Likewise the OWB setup is bulky and poor concealment, and so a new carrier might get a bad impression of what OWB carry actually entails. So since the holsters don't do any of the positions well, I don't think they give a good representation of what the setup is.
@c.b.78304 жыл бұрын
@@ASPextra I get what you're saying. But in the end, that's the trade off, jack of all trades, master of none. I'm currently running this kit, more specifically the AIWB with a cloak mag carrier. I have been carrying a S&W M&P Shield 9 for 4 years now in an AG holster, about 3 on strong side and then the last year appendix. I’ll say that strong side wasn’t too bad, but it’s not great at all as an appendix holster. It never really felt like it fit right (I’m 5’10” and a muscular 205 lbs) and I learned it was due to the lack of a wedge and claw, I think. It’s just a really bad appendix holster, not well thought out…so I completely agree with you. Again, the strong side holster I used was ok. Their paddle holster is bad…the way the retention button works doesn’t allow you to get a good high grip on the gun and if you push the button too high up then it flexes, doesn’t release, and feels like it might break…something that could get you killed. I don’t recommend the paddle holster AT ALL. I do NOT recommend AG. By the way John your weight loss is looking great. Love your content on this channel and the main channel.

That said, my wife got me the shapeshift for my birthday last year and while I find the IWB and OWB hybrid to be extremely comfortable, durable, safe, effective, and reliable, the appendix version truly does absolutely suck. For a guy like John who pretty much only carries appendix, that makes it worthless, but I wish he'd recognize that factor for what it is before declaring the entire thing junk without even bothering to assess all it's other possibilities. My experience with AG has been the exact opposite of his, and I was really skeptical going in, fully expecting to hate it and return it (which they make very easy, by the way).

You're right- we love ya John but there a bias here but your post is spotone, the appendix setup is fair, at best, their ankle holster is superb.

I have the Alien Gear Shape Shift holster for my Taurus PT111 G2C. I have to say that I can definitely see the opposing viewpoint. If you are a competitive shooter or you carry your firearm concealed it's definitely not the best holster on the market. I live in Georgia so I have the option of open carrying and conceal carrying. It's kind of a pain in the butt to by 4 different holster set ups spending well over $300 so I can carry whatever way I want when I want. This holster may be slightly less quality than the other holsters but for a 100 bucks being able to switch between any holster I could possibly want is awesome for my personal use. I prefer to open carry and the paddle holster and the belt slide holster work great for me. The problem with the IWB holster for is is the size. I'm only 160 pounds and trying to conceal a firearm is a pain in the butt regardless, yet less with this holster it looks like I'm carrying a bazooka down my pants and a G2C is a pretty small firearm. The only time I ever carry concealed is if I'm on my girlfriend's college campus which is required by law in Georgia to carry concealed...and I have traveled to Florida several times where I've had to carry concealed to due to their laws. Over all I don't think this is a terrible holster it definitely suits my needs for the price point. There are definitely better holsters on the market but Alien Gear by no means is garbage

You literally went over just one configuration. You also compared this directly to an owb, yet you did not go over any outside the waistband configurations the Alien Gear has to offer. I'm not saying you have to like the thing. We are all entitled to an opinion and facts and figures should dictate our opinions but this was like watching CNN. You only showed what you wanted to show. (Appendix). Unlike CNN you at least told me that you had a bias. Hahaha. I hope you consider making another video to show the other configurations. Even if you just tell me what you don't like about them. I know you think everyone should carry appendix but that does not mean we all do.

@@ASPextra about the open carry, I’ve seen several videos of open carry guns being stolen but all of them where kept either stuck in a back pocket, a sticky holster in the back or mexican carry. Have you ever seen someone get a gun in a proper leather or kydex holster that is strong side and angled forward slightly? Especially if it’s either a pancake or iwb holster.

I’ve had the AG holster since day 1 (9 years now?) and I bought one of the holsters which you’ve promoted before for another firearm I have and it was kinda trash. The whole point of AG, in my opinion, is to figure out exactly what works for you. The same holster and gun that fits me and doesn’t print, prints on my gf, and my gf’s gun that conceals well for her, doesn’t work for me. Different body types, different carry styles, etc. There are NO perfect carry holsters that work for everyone, but also most people don’t get free holsters, custom made holsters for you, or have money to buy 10-100 holsters that cost $80-$100 each that gun “influencers” have. This video missed the mark completely - unfortunately. But I guess 1 in however many videos is a pretty good percentage :-)

I had an alien gear holster once. Price was good. Was pretty comfy. I had the .... maybe "soft tuck" which is a kydex face on leather backing. 1.) Overall comfort: wears ALL DAY no problem. 2.) Customer service in my experience was freakin' amazing. 3.) They've got a lifetime deal so if you get a new gun they'll ship you a new shell face for like $12. Not bad. *CONS:* A.) Inconvenient to put on, especially with the two clips B.) Inconveniently large when dropping a deuce in a gas station loo. C.) Reholstering is a little precarious because the leather flap at top that protects your slide from sweat tends to fold over the shell. That means two handed reholster or the precarious "muzzle yourself in the pelvis and lever the nose of the barrel in there" action. No go. Overall: I was satisfied with Aliengear but won't buy another IWB holster from them.

Man if you treasure your health you should really stay away from gas station bathrooms. I used to work at a truck stop and had to clean the showers that was the most disgusting thing I've ever seen in my life, worse than cleaning Porta-Johns for a living.

I completely agree too. I was also dumb enough to buy two of their leather gun belts, talk about bad purchase (they are nice but way overpriced). I used their adjusted waist band measurements and the sent the belts I received I couldn't use for EDC (the main reason for buying them) but they worked fine if I was in a tailored suit. Like a dumb dumb I didn't send them back in time to get replacements and when I contacted them about it the cough cough (literally the person said **cough cough** ) solution was to take a drill press to a virtually brand new belt so I could put more holes in them.

Not gonna lie John. I bought the Alien Gear Shape Shift core pack aka the $100 pack. I do like it and the idea but not all the way like it. Like you said around 17:14. The Belt Clip is too weak and too thin. Also YEP at 17:28 when you're talking about the entire holster coming out that happened to me. Hear me out okay? When standing still, drawing from IWB 3'0 clock..yeah..no issues but as soon as I do the followings..the holster start too...yeah... A: Sit down on a chair and draw while sitting down. The holster claw is sort of loosen off my belt, holster doesn't fall off but the claw has shifted off the belt and the holster tilts a bit forward. B. Move forward or backward, side step and draw gun. Sometimes the holster comes out and fall on the ground or sometimes the entire holster comes out. C. Practice ducking/taking cover and draw. Sometimes the holster falls out or the entire thing comes out. The only thing I learn about Core Pack. It gave me an general idea on what type of carry I like and type of holsters I prefer. Now I carry a Black Arch Single Clip IWB Protos - M. I played with this Black Arch and did my own playing style. Black Arch holds very well.
