Update. I've blasted through Alien 1-4 in the last week and loved these commentaries. I've Oliver for several years and Rob for a couple, both great channels that present movies in a different way. Even though these movies all have commentaries it's a great a great way to watch them again. I knew had done commentaries but had never fully checked your back catalogue. I jumped from this to Ghostbusters. 1984 was a hell of a year for movies. As streaming grew and then after COVID, movies rarely bothered with commentaries, they were rarely worth anyway. I also saw Alien Romulus on Saturday, even though it has issues, I genuinely enjoyed it and it was great sitting in an almost packed cinema.

Hi! Love your commentaries, thanks! Regarding the discussion at about 1Hr about how the scientists got the alien DNA... Well, in Alien³ Ripley gave a blood sample, not a DNA test. Maybe the chest burster feeds on the host´s blood in order to grow, and thereby some body fluids from the alien (perhaps KY jelly...) and the host might be exchanged... So Ripley´s blood had alien DNA in it. Perhaps that resulted in the military scientists having a blood sample DNA jungle, and that`s why they took so long to isolate the Alien´s DNA from Ripley´s DNA. That could be why they had so many failures in replocating Ripley, and kept the last one because it was the only one that survived... until they got the Ripley with Alien super powers... and the Queen! One just has to think these things through... And no, I am not a scientist. But I have fucked a robot... Regards, Swami

I was 11 in 1997. I remember the excitement of finding out about its release after seeing press shots on the front of some film magazine in a newsagents 🤯 Alien was my jam as a kid, my parents had the other 3 on video since forever as well as A3 for the Mega Drive so I felt myself quite the Alien connoisseur as a child. Loved this movie when I finally got my hands on a rental and eventually bagged the vhs with my birthday money 😎🤙🏻 I used to fast forward through the 1-7 clone scene, it’ll scared the crap out of me. This movie is really cool looking. The Alien movies actually have a very good track record and have always had strong visual stylists for directors. She was clones for the purpose of Wayland Yutani realizing she was the Perfect survivalist Human, thus the Alien in return respected her and admired her in the way WY, Company Admired and Respected them to be the Perfect Specimens thus that's why they kept her DNA. AAhhh was totally looking forward to watching along but I can't find the Theatrical Cut anywhere and as a 50hz peasant I only ever bought the PAL DVD. I guess I'm gonna have to grab a Blu Ray from eBay or something haha! Who'da thunk it that my first Blu Ray would be Alien: Resurrection, eh? I actually bloody love this film a lot. Very underrated. When I first saw it I had no idea about Jean-Pierre Jeunet directing it. My uncle gave my dad City of Lost Children on VHS for Christmas probably a year after it came out so I would have seen both within 2 years but as a 12-14 year old I wouldn't have even realised! I realised it was the same director probably 10 years ago, the vibe and the cast totally made sense. I rewatched it after finding out and I started enjoying it so much more. The colour palette is properly Jeunet. Lots of greens and yellows and reds from what I remember. It has some very memorable moments, the hybrid alien death is fucking harrowing for one thing. And it has Winona Ryder in it❤

I've no interest in being a contrarian arse. I don't say things to get a rise out of people. Yet Alien fans always look at me like I've come around their house on Christmas day to piss on their kids when I say, I like Resurrection. I like Resurrection more than Aliens. Aliens is the one I like the least of the original four. Yeah, nobody is gonna make a five hour documentary about the fourth film, and I should hate it for undoing the poignant ending of Alien 3. But Jean Pierre, I think, knew that a fourth Alien flick is intrinsically absurd. So he made it an absurd comedy. Aliens fans can love what they love, and I support that. But anyone says what about Bill Paxton, I say Dan Hedaya's hairy arms. Anyone says Pulse Rifles, I say Brad Dourif trying to French kiss a xenomorph through glass. Anyone says power loader, I say Ron Perlman's chin. That's what was great about those four films as a collection; all different, something for everyone. Even weird assholes like me.

Still don't make sense that you can clone a Ripley with the complete alien queen inside of her. Should just be a Ripley with changed DNA then, ready to house a chestburster inside of her, but not actually having one in her. Or if they are able to extract the important parts to clone a Xenomorph from her changed DNA, it should just be a Xenomorph then that comes out. Cloning a Ripley with the complete thing separately inside of her is mental and makes no fucking sense.

I always liked it for what it was. Together with A3 it's class lower than Alien/Aliens, but in many spots it is decent, and even when looking from the perspective of a fan service product- it's WAY above AvP1 movie (AvP games are great!). A lot of interesting ideas and setting, but the tone is the least Alien/horror, and more like an action thriller with some gore etc. Not sure what's the main source, but often the pace and some camera movements and transitions stand out in this regard. Just like with Alien3- some script issues (and most likely studio interference) can sabotage even a great ensemble of good actors and the work of talented set designers/music composers/cameramen/practical and CG artists etc. And just like with the Terminator franchise- it's better to approach cloning here like its time travel- take it at face value and DON'T ask questions.

58:30 (spoilers for Alien:Romulus, so look away if you haven't seen it or don't want to be spoiled) This was always one of my biggest points of contention with Resurrection, as much as I have a soft spot for the movie. But Alien: Romulus seems to retroactively answer the question by explaining that facehuggers carry the genetic accelerant (black goo) from Prometheus, altering their hosts in the process of enabling them to gestate the embryo As an aside, this seemed to imply that the Engineers did not create the goo, but rather sourced it from the xenomorphs themselves - they worshipped the creature's perfection and sought to imbue themselves with it, much like Weyland-Yutani. A fitting parallel that both the Engineers and Weyland-Yutani meet the same end through their tampering with the fire of the gods

This is where the films go from being bad and frustrating,Alien 3,to just being a complete joke. This film is a trash fire that only gets worse the more you think about it. Joss has no idea what he was doing. It reminds me of Alien Romulus like that. Even at this point it was a tired idea that needed to be put to rest. It's funny that they wanted Chow Yun Fat to be in this film. But when he read the script he turned it down. Good for him. Frankly taking about this franchise after this point only serves to remind one of just how much of a miracle it was that the first two films were as great as they are. Everything else after is simply riding off the wave that they made.
