No, they have observational learning; whatever they can use in their environment, they will use, like how the Queen used an elevator after seeing how it worked, or the liquid nitrogen weapon used to pacify them to kill a man.

@BigMac8000
@BigMac8000 Жыл бұрын
I agree except for one thing. Don't mistake compassion with curiosity. He didn't go mad in the end - he disassociated himself with the risks. He didn't understand what he was fostering. This seems hard to believe that a man of intelligence could find himself inside such an absolute vacuum - but that's the quality for which he was chosen. Not likely scientific merit, not likely his pedigree - his blithe obliviousness to the truth. Only madmen would sign up for a mission that was top secret, on a ship, that involved illegal research and gene tampering of such a high degree... and then follow that path this far. It's why his hands shake when he goes to terminate them with the safety protocol - he hesitated, because that's what the military wanted. They want men who will hesitate to kill these creatures because to the military, they only see the potential weaponization - not their actual potential. The scientists were goaded in by the promise of fortune, not just riches and glory, but the bevy of scientific possibility. They have no concept what it actually is because they've fixated on the sum of its parts - not the ultimate capability of the species, of which they have not yet observed. This incredulity dates back to the beginning of Alien - none of them have ever seen an Alien. Nobody has. The survivors of Alien 3 were prisoners, they wouldn't believe them anymore than they would have believed Ripley. Bishop, the person, would be the only person who believed in it and his accounts are all secondhand - he was a fringe scientist, and likely as deluded as the rest towards the actual capability. They really just plain don't know, they suspect, but it's easier in life to be oblivious and it washes over even the smartest people. We need that to survive. Yet none of them fathomed what could happen here, that this creature may supercede any natural creature in existence. It sounds silly, but this is the same story. Conscience and science don't go well together, despite sharing the same letters. You can note this in their very first exchange quite clearly when Ripley says "F***" and he says, "Fork". It's not just a joke. Ripley's hyper sexualized in this film, because her DNA has been crossed with the Xeno's. She has an instinct to breed that's far more advanced than the original Ripley - it's a compulsion. It's a new tick. It's why it's her first word. It's why she knows the first one born would be a Queen and not a regular Xeno. It's also because she's just starting to use her intelligence, and she realizes they are all screwed. The instincts are tied together - breed, destroy. That's what Xeno's destroy, in that order. That's why the first kills in the first movie were dragged off to be used for breeding. Breed. Kill. "F***ed". This went entirely over this scientist's head, because he has no idea what he's made. None of them do. He can't even "see" her in front of his eyes. In all fairness, they likely don't know this species was created to be the ultimate destroyer of worlds, they can't know that this things biology is so adept - they're lost in the forest and can't see the trees anymore. If this man was compassionate, he would've asked, "Why did you say fuck?" given that she clearly has motor functions, you can see it in her eyes, she's awake, aware, and observing. There's no reason that "Fuck" would be her first word, it's conspicuous - but his urge is to teach, to take control of the conversation. He's smart, curious, downright affectionate but... Obsession and compassion are pretty hard to distinguish, it's the age old poets dilemma. This movie has issues but there's some thought put into the script that goes way over people's heads - I often think over the production's heads too. "She'll breed. You'll die." It sounds like a badass line, but it's the instinct coming out. If he was compassionate, he would have said, "Where Ripley died" but he says, "Where you died". That's a callous remark considering he should disassociate Ripley from Ripley 2, it's also scientifically inaccurate. She's not Ripley. But he can't see that - it's also why he tries to correct her about the Fork. He cares about what's in front of his face and not what's really happening. If he had compassion though... he would've killed her immediately. Ripley is far more dangerous than the Xeno's in this building - her DNA being crossed, even slightly, with the Xeno's means that she carries with her a biological imperative. Ripley, if they'd read her dossier - was abject at the loss of her children. Psychological she's unstable, but let's say it all goes well, the Xeno's are captured and made docile --- in the end, Ripley would need to be killed because she carries with her far greater concerns. Her new DNA can be used to made Xeno's indefinitely, and horrifyingly, Xeno's adapt. God knows what she'll become in time, as her biology "adapts" to being partially human. Ripley 2 here wouldn't likely let that happen, but any scientist with any compassion at all would see the risk. Which is exactly why she's surrounded with soldiers, inmates, test subjects and absolutely soulless scientists. She wouldn't have been created any other way. Anyone who applied a psych profile to this discussion would immediately point out that Ripley had children before - and would likely again, and if she does so, she may end up breeding Xeno's via her children despite her best efforts.... or something "worse" given that she carries the same mentality as they do deep down. They can't even see the inhumanity of this Ripley, and if they had - they would've terminated her as hard as they'd terminate the Xeno's. We all like this character but post Alien Resurrection the "future" for that character is extremely, extremely, extremely perilous. ...... the script was definitely "there", even if the movie went way off the rails. Lots of great details here.

For me, this movie goes off the rails when Ripley goes into the "alien pit" where the scientist is stuck to the wall and the "alien baby" is born. It become an unwatchable mess after that so I just turn it off. I like alien hybrid Ripley. I like how they showed the Xenos as intelligent, clever creatures. I kind of liked the mercenary crew even though they were stock clichés right off the shelf. I disliked how the military was shown as incompetent bafoons. The scientists were stock bad-guy clichés. The story was straightforward until it unnecessarily went off the rails. It is a two-star movie in a franchise that consistently made 4/5 star material. It leaves very little room to deal with the implications of the new queen and the newborn, I dont remember much of it since its been a long time. Id say its just a dissapointment as it seems the unique ideas got very little screen time and instead of getting AVP maybe a sequel set up where the Aliens are mind controlled cyborgs conquering rebellious worlds, maybe seeing the alien dna spliced into humans for a variety of odd effects. You could have a parody where people are breeding alien dogs and using them for duck hunting. Roll over.

Not gonna lie, I really enjoyed this version of Ripley. Something about her just acting like this life is a bonus round and the game never ends had a nice sardonic flair. She really felt like a Ripley 2, and god knows what she got up to after this. She's possibly more dangerous than the Xeno's, arguably. Despite her being a good guy, her biology at this point represents a ton of problems should she ever try to have kids again - or even just "live".

I love how Weaver (I will not butcher the spelling of her first name) portrays 8 slightly differently. Similar to the cool confidence of a feline. Like a predator, a term she is referred by in the movie. I think it’s cool as it lets us know that she not only has a bit of Xenomorph DNA, 8 also has a bit of the predatory instincts. Along with the way 8 moves and interacts with things of course

This ripley reminds me of joker a little bit. I watched this after I watched joker, so that’s why I say it. What I mean by her reminding me of joker is that it feels like she has nothing left to lose. Nothing can hurt her anymore. She’s just given up on it all and has no reason to care.
@vishnu79
@vishnu79 Жыл бұрын
The thing is, the "Ripley" that we see here isn't entirely human. How much of her is "Ripley" and how much is the Xenomorph is open to debate. I feel that it isn't so much that she's given up on it all and doesn't care, as that she (like the xenomorphs in containment) is biding her time, learning, and waiting for the right moment. She knows that things will get out of hand eventually, and that that will give her the chance to escape. She also knows that her warnings of the same will be ignored, since the people in charge are so inherently arrogant that they will inevitably screw things up.

@Alex M Yes it had, but so did this movie (and even Alien 3 to some degree) Look one can easily argue that after Aliens we havent gotten 1 worthy successor in this franchise. But I would say I could still enjoy even watching Resurrection and Prometheus despite their flaws....they are nowhere near as great though obviously as Alien and Aliens those are the only 2 true classics in this franchise. But Prometheus could have been great way to start this trilogy of prequels to Alien, unfortunately Ridley Scott kind of dropped the ball with Alien Covenant. But ye for me Resurrection is more of a "guilty pleasure" movie than serious followup to the previous 3 movies, while with Covenant...well unless Scott or someone else would come up with great follow up to that, I will just ignore it entirely and just watch Prometheus as stand alone prequel even if it doesnt explain everything.

I have to admit. I have a soft spot for this entry in the franchise. It's cheesy. It's acting is all over the place. But in terms of vibe, and human hubris, and the ramshackle crew that banters, it feels more like an Alien movie than any of the Alien vs. Predator movies, and imo was a better story than Alien 3. (Alien 3 looked fantastic, and I give all the props to the Director for style and getting all he could from his cast, but all the studio interference in that movie, nobody but James Cameron could have saved that movie).

That's what I like particularly with the Alien movies (1 to 4, I purposely ignore the rest) it that every director had the chance to bring his touch, that makes 4 really different movies but I couldn't tell that one of them is bad.
