Predators typically don't kill something they don't perceive as a threat. Like with Bishop Weyland, the predator saw he was sick and wasn't concerned until Weyland attacked him. It helped that she was able to kill a Xenomorph on her own. They respect the art of combat and like to hunt things that provide a challenge, like Dutch from the first film.

Its a nice trick that the Predators only hunt those they deem the most dangerous prey. ALIENS have a mind like a goldfish but are deadly enough physically to make it worth their time.

Correct but i would just add that it has nothing to do with respect, But more of a tradition within there culture, There's predator comics & novels that show that they treat non hostile species that survive the hunt not like there equals but there dogs or loyal slaves, Notice that he branded her with the symbol of the hunt, Predators typically don't seem to respect anything not even each other, Although they do have a class system in which they reward each other with titles & status, Based on overall performance, There kind of like vikings who worship the hunt more than anything else.

Basically, if the Predator doesn't consider you a "worthy" kill, it will generally leave you alone. That's why it didn't kill Weyland when it found that he was going to die anyway of lung cancer. Killing him would have been been considered "beneath" a Predator. When the lady killed the alien, she earned the Predator's respect.

There's ALSO an interpretation that Weyland was clearly dying of cancer, and not a worthy target. BUT, Weyland as weak as he was, fought an opponent he had no chance to defeat for honor - "don't you turn you back on me". So that earned Weyland an 'honorable' death in combat (very short combat, but I guess that counts for something). Similar to DS9 'House of Quark'. -edit- for honor. -edit- closer to 'Bambi vs Godzilla" in practice. (cue toenail flex)

these three Predators were the Yautja's version of teenagers earning their passage to adulthood. The Celtic was the most experienced among them, so he was the team leader. By hunting and killing the Xenomorphs, these three would earn the right to join the elite of the elite among their people. They would have earned the right to carry the mark of their kin. Sadly, as often happens when batting the Xenomorphs. . .they didn't survive the trial. Predators have their own sense of honor. They do not kill children, and they usually do not kill unarmed people unless its hand to hand combat. The predator did no kill her initially as she was not a threat or a worthy target. He gives her the Shield and Spear because she killed that specific Alien, so he gave her the ability to defend herself. Predators version of honor is at odds with our own concept at times. Its in many ways a clan law of sorts perhaps rather than just a code of honor. Hunts must be done in certain ways. Children and pregnant woman are off limits as they are no threat. The more dangerous their prey is the greater the trophy, its why he dropped Weyland, he was sick and weak the kill was worth nothing.

@@LoveLaurenn Great reaction, thanks! The "hunter code of ethics" was also introduced in the first Predator movie. Recall that the Predator repeatedly attacked the armed Special Forces soldiers but spared the rebel hostage lady they had taken from the other rebel camp and were forcibly extracting, even though the soldiers were often literally right next to the hostage when they were dispatched. Predators are hunters, not mere killers, and they take the difference very seriously. Also worth noting that these Predators would presumably have been rookies, hence their vulnerability and lack of combat knowledge. The hunting party was there to get "blooded" in one of what are likely many "game preserves" the Predators have established on primitive worlds. That humanity would have advanced to the ability to interfere in the Hunt as they did was not a factor the Predators in general would have foreseen, nor one the greenhorn Predators were prepared to deal with. It also seems not allowing a world to become over-run with dangerous vermin like Xenomorphs is pretty high on the Predator priority list, and it's sorta hard to fault them for it. Imagine trying to clean-up billions of our steel-toothed friends. You could just leave them, sure, but, as Ripley discovered several times, the giant-ass rats have an uncanny knack for escaping worlds that should imprison them. They're sorta like those octopuses you hear of that baffle all attempts by zoos to contain them, in part because they can use a space the width of a credit-card to make a break, and in part because they're way smarter than anything without a "brain" has any right to be (smarter than a lot of people, come to think of it). You could also just glass the whole planet from orbit, but presumably the Predators have found, as we have, that worlds capable of sustaining any kind of (non-acid-blooded) life are hard to come by. Overall, I thought this was a pretty fun popcorn flick that had the good sense to lift most of its plot directly from the Dark Horse comics that did such a good job expanding the Predator lore. The sequel to this could also have been great fun, but (spoiler? Not really) it's so damned dark you honestly can't make out what's happening most of the time. Very disappointing.

The leader with the cool designed helmed that went against the xenomorph(dubbed Grid Alien because the grid mark scars left on it from the net) was the Celtic Predator. And the one that lasted the longest is the Scar Predator because he marked himself and helmet with the blood of the xenomorph. Predators (Yautja) have a sense of honour in a way, if they don't consider someone/thing a threat they will generally leave it alone, unless it continues to attack or present itself as a threat, like the old guy, he was terminally ill so the Predator saw that weakness and left him alone, then he continued to flamethrower it so it finished him off. The one Predator (Scar) doesn't kill her because he doesn't see her as a threat, she didn't try to attack him or anything, plus she gave him the shoulder cannon, that probably was reason to spare her, she kind of helped him there, then her stubbornness and will to fight was obvious enough even if he couldn't really understand her so he ended up kind of valuing her as a warrior, which was proven when the chief/hunt leader rewarded her at the end.

The thing about xenomorphs is that they inherit traits from the host. Since we usually see them hatch from human hosts they have a more human-like bipedal body structure. If the host is a quadreped it will be also. So hatching from a predator gives it some unique characteristics. Just imagine if the host was something like a crocodile 😱 (which actually happens in a comic).

I know i'm a bit late on this one but I just wanted to point this out in case no one has yet. The 3 Predators you see in the film are all brothers. They were tasked with hunting the Xenomorphs as their first test in order to become men and slowly work to be better hunters. Its part of their culture. Celtic was the oldest. As the oldest, he was the biggest and most aggressive while also being the leader and undisputed Alpha of the 3. He also had a wild temper and acted more rashly. Similar to Ralph of the TMNT. The middle child was Chopper. He's described as being the most careless and was prone to taking more risks. Almost a daredevil type. And lastly, we have Scar, the more famous and youngest of the 3 brothers. Scar seemed to fight and think differently from his fellow Predator Young Bloods. Scar, on the other hand, seemed to be the most smarter fighter, using his senses to his advantage. He was also the most honorable, who abided the Yautja Honor Code accordingly. Additionally, he seemed to have a sense of humor as well. Kind of the most surprising part. But each of them were beefy as hell too with really cool looking designs that made them stand out. I also liked the fact that Grid, the Xenomorph with the gridded pattern on his head, was the only one who fought BOTH Predators alone and without help, killed both of them at once in the same duel. That's mad respect right there! What a badass. The Queen was great too!

Great Reaction :) The film isn't bad, but the Comics and books answer all of your "Why?" questions. Here, these 3 Predators were 2 students and one master. There are here to "blood" the youngsters......a bit of a coming of age ceremony. They have these worlds set up everywhere, but humans have come along and not understanding the dangers, totally bugger up their set ups the Xenomorphs and up running amok, Just like here. The Predators respect hunting prowess, combat skills and damn good instincts to survive. Any prey demonstrating that will be given equal respect but the combat will still happen.....a predator will never walk away from a fight. In the first book, at the end after the Predator burns his mark into the human and the queen has been killed, She waits, knowing that others will come to see what happened. She has the mark of a well respected Predator AND she has the skull of a Queen as a trophy......They let her travel and hunt with them.

I have a sneaking affection for this. Wouldn't go so far as to say it's *good*, and it's definitely not as clever as its parent films, but I feel like - on a basic level, if nothing else - it does get the Xeno and Predator 'right': the Predators have a hunting code, which is barbaric but they're acting in accord with it rather than just being rampaging slasher monsters, and the Xeno is ultimately uncontrollable, untameable; no matter how in charge you may think you are with your fancy technology or whatever advantage you think you have, you're always one tiny mistake away from the whole situation going spectacularly downhill real fast. This movie gets those points - not in any kind of sophisticated way, but if there's an Aliens and Predators party going on, I feel like it could get an invite, just for solidarity's sake. (Requiem, on the other hand, would get thrown out into the street by the bouncers, and serve it right.)

Predator 2 is the film that established that Alien was in the same universe. It's a Predator temple. Killing a Xenomorph is a right is passage for the Predators. BTW there are a couple of related short films you might want to check out if you haven't already. One is Batman:Dead End and the other is ZVP (the Z stands for Zatoichi). Both are excellent.

When I watched this in the theater I initially hated it, to be honest. Nowadays I think it is fine, a solid B-Movie, with many flaws but also with really enjoyable parts (like the actual AvP fights, which were far too sparse throughout the movie). As others already pointed out, definitely watch the second Predator movie! I remeber it getting a lot of hate some time ago, but that was totally unfounded in my opinion. It might not be as perfectly condensed as the first one, but they did a really nice shift in scenery there and also laid the foundation for much of the Predator lore which is later explored in the comic books etc. (and also in AvP, concerning the Predator's code of honor etc., but other commenters already laid that out). I also really loved the teaser with the predalien at the end of AvP, sadly the second movie... *sigh* That might be the only one in the combined franchise that I would actually advise to skip, except you really want to be a 100% completionist. ;) (By the way, I would love to see you react to Alien3, 4, Prometheus and Covenant. ;) :) ) In general, if you are really into both univeres, as well as the shared universe I would highly recommend the comics and perhaps even some of the novels (I only read the newer ones, don't know if there are older ones, or if they are worth a look, if so). But you have to be prepared to give the overall lore some leeway here and there. As with all things which have contributions from countless authors, things not always work 100% the same everywhere. And already the Alien filmmakers somehow ignored some things established in earlier movies (as an example: Ridley Scott more or less ignores every movies not done by himself in Prometheus and Alien Covenant). Myself I am a huge Alien fan, and "only" liked the Predators very much, but the combined Universe is so much fun and also I get more into the Predator's lately (read "The Rage War" books lately, and although they kind of differ from most other Alien, Predator and Crossover-Material, as they kind of focus a huge part on humans, I really enjoyed it as a kind of campy "space war" epic, with Aliens and Predators, also I really liked the even more expanded Predator lore there. ;) ) Long story short, really enjoyed your reaction, as always, keep going! :)

I've always loved how the Predators, also known as Yautja, do not kill mindlessly and do have their own code of honor as hunters and that you sometimes get to see their experience and actions as a race of hunters that, while dangerous, advanced, etc are not unwilling to engage in conversation or allow someone they originally planned to kill to talk. such as when he obviously intended to kill her at first but hesitated when she tried to communicate with him and then showed her respect after she killed a xenomorph, which I think Yautja believe are the ultimate prey. Also there's a deleted scene that shows this one has a somewhat twisted sense of humor.

If you remember the first Predator and seen "Predator 2" before this one, The Predator only kills those who are a threat to them and consider them as "Sport killing" Arnold to girl: "He didn't kill you because you weren't armed. No sport." The woman helped him against the predator and so considers her as an equal to help kill the Xenomorphs.

Hey, Laurenn! I'm glad you had fun but it's unfortunate you chose to jump the gun and skip ahead because most of your questions would have been answered had you been properly prepped by "ALIEN 3" and "PREDATOR 2"! I do hope you go back and see them. Predator ethics are elaborated upon in "Predator 2" as is the idea of a crossover between franchises. In fact, the next Predator movie being made will be derived from an element seen in "Predator 2". Alien hybridization is the next physiological revelation about the xenomorph in "Alien 3" in addition to two more discoveries. Had you seen the movies in their proper sequence, you would have been equipped with this information and would have enjoyed "AvP" more. Don't skip out on "PREDATORS" either because that one is definitely worth a watch, too. "AvP: Requiem" is a DIRECT SEQUEL to this movie and starts where this one ends! I wish you had kept the ancient ritual flashback with the jungle city being overrun in your edit. It's my favorite part of the movie! A Yautja isn't considered 'blooded' until his first xenomorph kill much like a Masai youth of Africa who must hunt and kill a lion to be regarded as a man by the tribe! I'm surprised you didn't recognize Lance Henriksen as Bishop from "Aliens". He played the CEO of the Weyland Corporation, the co-founding partner of the Weyland-Yutani Corporation of the 22nd-century. In "AvP: Requiem", you meet Ms. Yutani, the head of the other co-founding company. The setting is 2004. The pulse rifles were in use by the Colonial Marines in 2179! C'mon, now. The Queen will likely freeze or implode in the Antarctic depths. Sanaa Lathan was spared because she was unarmed and was aiding the Predator by deferentially returning his plasma-caster to him when he needed it most. She then kills a xenomorph which earns his respect. Everyone else who was killed by a Predator was armed and/or aggressive. Weyland would have been spared because he was defective prey. Killing him would have been unchallenging and, therefore, dishonorable until he made himself a threat. The team-up concept between a human and a Yautja is from the Dark Horse Comic series that kick-started the crossovers although the setting is on a colonized world in the future. At the end, the female protagonist, Machiko Noguchi, travels with the Predator clan and learns about their culture but is never accepted by any other Yautja. It's fascinating stuff! Great concepts in this movie. "Chariots of the Gods"-type stuff! The Yautja shaped early civilizations which is why ziggurats and pyramids dot the world. The Yucatan Basin just might be a nuclear crater caused by a hunt they lost control of! Yautja can capture and cryogenically freeze Queens. The gestation period for sacrificial humans is sped up for convenience either by genetic engineering or hormonal accelerants. We witness a Yautja rite of passage that requires the young Predators to best a xenomorph much the same way that Masai youth must hunt and kill a lion to become a man in the tribe. They use the alien's acidic blood for scarification to make a clan marking. Humans are seen as cattle but are a husbanded resource which is why they have the nuclear fail-safe in order to protect the wider world. It's also why pregnant humans are spared so that the livestock isn't depleted as seen in "Predator 2". We learn that infirm humans like Weyland are spared because such a kill is dishonorable. Same goes for unarmed prey which was established in "Predator". As established in "Alien 3", host characteristics are carried over to the chestburster. The drone in "Alien 3" was a quadruped because its host was an ox or a dog depending on the version seen. The Predalien hybrid born of the Predator host in this movie has the mandibles and the dreadlocks of a Yautja! We meet the co-founder of the Weyland-Yutani Corporation, Charles Bishop Weyland, who would later serve as the facial template for the Bishop android! You meet his 22nd-century descendant in "Alien 3"! The company mandate that Ash and Burke follow is the result of this encounter and the next one in "Requiem"! THIS MOVIE LEADS DIRECTLY TO THE NEXT FILM, "REQUIEM", WHERE YOU GET TO SEE AN INFESTATION ON EARTH! VIEWING ORDER: Alien Aliens (Special Edition) Alien 3 (Assembly Cut) Alien Resurrection (Director's Cut) [OPTIONAL] Predator (1987) Predator 2 Predators Alien vs Predator Alien vs Predator: Requiem (Unrated) Prometheus [OPTIONAL] Covenant [OPTIONAL] INTERNAL CHRONOLOGY: Predator (1987) Predator 2 Alien vs Predator Alien vs Predator: Requiem (Unrated) Predators Predator (2018) [SKIP THIS AWFUL FRANCHISE-KILLING REBOOT] Prometheus [OPTIONAL] Covenant [OPTIONAL] Alien Aliens (Special Edition) Alien 3 (Assembly Cut) Alien Resurrection (Director's Cut) [OPTIONAL]

I find this movie very watchable, but it fails to make me care about what happens to any of the characters, so I would grade it a solid C...maybe a C+ because it does deliver on some good AvP action. I wonder if anybody will ever do a Yautja (i.e. Predator) vs Alien (or vs. some other challenging space species) movie without humans muddying things up. I know the rationale is that the audience needs human characters to relate to, but uncharismatic human characters are worse than no human characters, and many people find warrior cultures fascinating, and so a Yautja-centric story has a lot of potential.

@@LoveLaurenn Talking about alien perspectives reminded me of two interesting examples from sci-fi. In an episode of the 1988 "War of Worlds" TV series, an alien was telepathically explaining to a human friend the alien rationale for the war. The telepathic vision stared with two weird looking aliens making weird sounds, then the picture blurred, and when the picture cleared, it was two attractive humans speaking English, so the human friend could empathize with the aliens more easily as well as understand what they were saying. In James White's novel "Hospital Station" set in a space station that provided medical care for a wide variety of species from different planets, a computer asked the main character to identify what species he was (because different species required different environmental conditions to survive). The character replied that he was "human," and the computer told him that he had to give the official alphanumeric identification code for his species because, in translation, every species refers to itself as "human."

The fight scenes between the superior (i.e. not human) warriors is really the draw of this film. Beyond that, it doesn't rise to the level of the first Predator film, and doesn't even deserve a comparison to Alien or Aliens. Being solidly in the Xenomorph cheering section myself, I do appreciate that they portrayed the predators as largely outmatched without their guns.
@churchofthegoldenone45772 жыл бұрын
The Predator honor code was introduced in Predator 2 (1990) when the predator gives the hero a trophy from a previous hunt, or the gift they left for humanity's chosen warrior in The Predator (2018). Sometmes tthey give their prey respect for being worthy opponents which is why they like hunting humans in the first place, but sometimes they reward those humans for being badass. Besides the predator in AVP (2004) knew he was going to die after being impregnated by the alien. The predator in Predator (1987) was actually a spoil sport in predator society by commiting suicide, he was supposed to give Dutch his due. That idea may be a rewrite of the original Predator film, but it has been followed through in every film except for Predators (2010) where the situation meade that outcome impossible, or AVP:R (2007) When the predator had to hunt an alien abomination.

So at the start of the movie, the Predator was hunting a lone human. Then it was ambushed by the Xenomorph. Later in the movie, we saw an entire chamber of Facehugger eggs. It seemed inconsistent to have so many after a several hours. I have a theory though. The hunt in 1904 took too long; the maze changed its layout every ten minutes, for test the Predator’s adaptability. But the Xenomorphs and Facehuggers made it to the surface. The Predators had to contain their numbers, or be overrun, as it happened in the past. Predators started killing the village population - no humans, no more Alien births. Meanwhile, the Queen laid more eggs than normal in the chamber, Predators are unaware of this fact. The hunt ends, the Predator returns the weapons to lockup, placed the Queen in the freezer, and shutdown the pyramid chamber, preserving the eggs for the century. The current Human group screwed up by taking the plasma cannons; they became targets of both parties. Your thoughts…

In this movie it is explained by the Sebastian that these are teenage predators who are basically having a coming of age ceremony. Think of it like predators have a practical exam for becoming an adult. Hence these teenage predators are as we've seen eager to hunt and kill, reckless/careless and somewhat merciful. In the sense that they rush head first into combat without confirming the presence of a third party (Xenomorphs) like the first two did, 3rd didn't check or secure his surroundings before marking himself and since he's not an adult and this is basically an exam with examiners watching, it would make sense he would like to score some brownie points with the examiners by showing he is respectful and helpful to fellow warriors even if they are not the same species.

the original Dark Horse comics AvP followed along the line of "Predator 2", where they gave a gift to a respectable human who survived a hunter. In AvP, this follows the comic book where the hunters see her fighting bugs but she makes peaceful gestures to the hunters to help them get the bugs, and so earns respect. Humans have colonized a planet with native animals which the predators previously would seed with bug eggs to allow hunters to train, but they didn't know that humans were there. The leader of the former human colony is Machiko Noguchi who helps her surviving people to escape and then becomes "Little Knife" in their language to join their hunting pack for a while. Weyland Yutani was the "Company" in the "Alien" franchise and Mr.Weyland is the model for the "Bishop" artificial person model in "Aliens" 1986. Lance Henrickson is one person to have been killed by the first "Terminator", the Predator in this movie, and the Alien queen and a baby in "Aliens" 2 & 3.

Amalgamated Dynamics Incorporated redesigned a huge amount of elements of the Queen for AVP. The height was increased from 14ft to 20ft & it’s arms were repositioned, so that they actually came out of its shoulders. 14ft was actually more accurate, based on the size difference between Queen Bees / Ants to the workers. Along with that, the waist & hips were changed. This was to allow for it to move like a real bipedal creature; the one in Aliens spent most of its time suspended & therefore it’s anatomy had developed differently due to this.
