When she was looking to move to Detroit she said "I'll have to take a big cut in pay." I said "Relax, it all works out ... things are cheaper here." Sure enough, we bought a two bedroom house with a basement for less than renting was costing her in Brooklyn. Nice place, just small, but we had a garage and a backyard we could garden. We liked it and planned to just mellow out and retire there. Then things got real ugly about the time we finished paying it off (6 years, land contract) and we sold it for a $66,000 loss to get away from a place that was going to kill one of us or the other (we're an interracial couple). But that was okay, we already owned a house in North Carolina. ;-) Yeah, NYC is expensive ... but anywhere you move people are making it. If wages are low, so are rents and houses and food and so on. If wages are high, you can expect to have to shit gold bricks to buy a night out ... corners and all. Like your avatar. Is there something else you'd like us to know? ;-)
