At the time this film was made, the actor who played Burke (of the company), Paul Reiser, was known almost exclusively for comedies, romantic and likable roles. I think they chose him for this role on purpose so that the viewers back then wouldn't immediately see him as "a bad guy", so it came as an unexpected shock to them that he turned out to really be one.

The colony had a population of 158. Newt was never infected, so that's 157 potential hosts plus the marines that were captured in the hive. Some facehuggers were removed, at least one before embryo implantation, and we know some aliens had been killed by the colonists. So we can guess that the maximum number of aliens is roughly 150.

Ripley made a deal with queen. The visual storytelling is phenomenal in that moment where she first makes it clear to the queen what the flamethrower does without aiming it directly at the eggs. She then points it at the eggs and looks right at the queen; her eyes saying "you let me out and I won't burn your babies - deal?" - The queen had the drones back off, indicating she understood the deal. When she allowed that one egg to open though, Ripley had to make good on her word by showing no mercy... otherwise from that point on the aliens would never respect her. I've seen it happen. You give them an inch and before you know it they're cutting you off in traffic, taking your parking spot, and stealing packages from your front porch. I KNOW THAT WAS YOU JERRY I HAVE A CAMERA.

@mickesmanymovies
@mickesmanymovies 11 ай бұрын
The eggs open whenever they're ready to open, and the facehuggers are operating on pure instinct. The queen has no say in the matter and cannot affect neither eggs or facehuggers in any way. So the unfortunate timing of that one egg opening at that very moment meant that Ripley was forced to break the deal. I absolutely agree with the visual storytelling in that scene being fantastic, and it stretches to that look and head tilt Ripley gives just before she starts torching the eggs. She doesn't want to turn it into a fight and was very happy to just leave, and then the egg opens and she looks at it, at the queen, tilts her head slightly as if to say "Well, damn...", and then just lets it rip!

30:50 As I see it, the egg that was hatching violated the ceasefire between Ripley & the alien queen. So Ripley fires back, at first in self-defence and then to not be followed. This version is the extended cut and the version that James Cameron much preferred. I also prefer the extended cut as it details Ripley's loss of her daughter (which is why she was much more protective of Newt like a mother) as well as the backstory of the colonists on LV-426. However, I did agree that as an action film, these two scenes were better off cut from the theatrical version, where there was more suspense on "what happened to the colonists" as you are entering it complete unaware just like Ripley did.

I think the ideal version would be somewhere being the theatrical and the director cuts. The daughter thing and the budding romance with Hicks are definitely missed in the theatrical cut. But showing the colony before the arrival of the marines in the extended cut breaks the continuity of the whole story being otherwise told from Ripley's perspective. I understand one idea behind that alien ship sequence was to give us some thrill in the first act, but if you really needed that, then do away with the lame-ass dream sequence which was only there to serve that purpose. I love that movie and it frustrates me that it came so close to perfection. (I feel the same about both cuts of Terminator 2 btw)

As far as Ripley laying into the queen with the weaponry instead of just leaving I tend to think it was a mother's rage thinking what the queen's eggs did to her crew and the colony. She probably was just reacting on pure instinct in wanting to finish her eggs off once and for all.

I think the queen went after Newt because she wanted her get-back. *g* Did you know that there were only about four alien suits and they used them to great effect to make it seem like hundreds. The concept of the powered suit of armor in general is usually credited to Robert Heinlein's story Starship Troopers, and we know James Cameron is a scifi fan, so it seems highly likely that the cargo mover that Ripley fought the Alien Queen with got at least some inspiration from Heinlein's powered suits. Especially the first introduction of Newt I feel detracts from the character. But your reaction was great as per usual. I really appreciate you getting into the character building more than I usually see on react channels

27:58 This scene makes me so emotional, not just because of Ripley's love for Newt but because Hicks says "I believe you, she's alive." The entire movie has been about NO ONE believing Ripley, and so many people died because of it. Now, when Ripley is hysterical because that little girl was taken, someone says I believe you. That must have meant so much to her.

Reasons Ripley didn’t just leave: 1: She was afraid to make any sudden moves until she had completely thought through her exit strategy. 2. She was frozen temporarily with fear until her anger at the queen overcame her fear when the egg opened. 3. She knew she was covered in plot armor at this point and was by most standards invincible. 😉

The director's cut, nice. I've seen the version that didn't have the turrets, the trip to the alien spaceship and some other parts. It's one of those movies (like Predator, Gremlins and the first Alien) that can be watched in the completely different language and it will still provide the entertainment and be self explanatory. The first time I saw this movie it was translated into German. I didn't know a single word, but I had a lot of fun. It's all about the action. The dialogues are just there to fill up some blank spaces.

Since you mentioned recognizing Michael Biehn as Corporal Dwayne Hicks as the same actor who played Kyle Reese in The Terminator three other actors here had other James Cameron connections as he likes to reuse actors he's familiar with. Bill Paxton Hudson "game over man, game over!" was the blue spiked haired punk at the beginning of The Terminator and Bishop "not bad for a human" was a police officer at the station in the same movie. Vasquez "I only need to know one thing, where they are" played young John Connor's Foster Mom in T2 Judgment Day and both she and Paxton (RIP) were in Titanic.

My absolute favorite of the whole series. From a time when film was still a craft. Sets had to be built and props deployed. As a filmmaker, you had to build something in order to show it to the audience. No CGI or similar toys. I think a lot of the quality that distinguishes films from that era comes from the fact that the film crew had to invest more. You had to come up with something, think about it and be creative in the truest sense of the word. An example? The Marine's ground vehicle is actually a vehicle used at the airport to move aircraft to their final parking position. Such an ingenious thought must first come to mind! Today, all you need is oh-so-great CGI, people who can handle it, and a director can do whatever comes to mind. Don't get me wrong folks, there are plenty of examples of CGI that looks really good and is an asset to the movies that use it, but I'll still say that those in charge of the big film workshops have become lazy, lethargic, and unimaginative as more of the work has been taken off their hands by the glorious new technology.

But other reactors who have done so regretted doing as a waste of time.

Great reaction. Some fun facts about the movie: -during the knife scene that was the actor's real reaction as his hand being added wasn't scripted and was a prank by the others - the actor who plays Hicks was changed after they started shooting. You can see a brief shot of the original actor as they're entering the hive. - you can hear the Queen screaming in the background after they burn the chestburster and that sets off the hive to attack, so they were actually pretty close to her

Fun fact: acording to lance henriksen, the actor of the android Bishop, Bill Paxton, the actor of Hudson, wasn't aware, he would be part of the knife trick scene, until the filming, so he's reaction is genuine. And there is a throw away line where Hudson says, when someone said aliens thought of illegal alien and signed up. The line was inspired by the fact, that the actor of Vasquez, Jennette Goldstein, thought the film movie would be about illegal immigrants and dressed acordingly for the first casting.

The one actor IS from Terminator (the first one)...it is Michael Biehn. The "mouthy, loud, freaking out"..."why don't you put her in charge!!!" soldier is played by Bill Paxton who was in "Twister". I love the lady pilot from the drop ship...her helmet has "FLY THE FRIENDLY SKIES" on the front..that was the old PAN AM airlines motto..."we're in the pipe..5x5"....The proximity alert machine sound is EERIE! In Alien, Ferro, a dropship pilot, states "We're in the pipe, five by five." This means in laymen's terms "We're on track (pipe) and read you loud (5) and clear.(5)" It's usually a military term. There are 5 levels of reception, five being the best.

I haven't seen anyone mention it yet (searched through comments) and fun fact! The knife trick scene was originally going to have the actor Bishop doing it alone. But they director got talked into playing a trick where the scene in the movie we see happens of Bishop putting his hand over the other well the comrade holds him still. So it's real fear since the actor didn't know he'd be pulled into the scene. He even got a blood blister from the surprise but nothing more.

Great reaction dude & glad you watched the director's cut of Aliens (which I also agree is the best version in my own opinion). Now it is up to you if you want to watch the next film Alien 3 (which also has two very different versions - the Theaterical Cut which runs at 114 minutes and The Assembly Cut which runs at 144 minutes. In my opinion, both versions have their pluses & minuses and they are both very different from each other in terms of overall tone, atmosphere and paceing. They even have different openings & endings as well - in some ways they both feel like two completely different movies because of all the changes made, again IMO). Now some fans did not like Alien 3 (to each their own I guess), however I did personally enjoy it (and I liked both versions as well). Some fans (...without spoiling anything, trying to be very vague here) didn't like the some of the changes made from Aliens into Alien 3 (particular with certian characters) but I understand why such things were done storywise and I do applaud the filmmakes for making such bold choices (other filmmakers might not have gone that route that the filmmakers took the franchise, but also Alien 3 might not have been as successful as it was if they chosen to go the safe route and rehash the two previous entries over again & it might have gotten stale - one thing about the Alien film franchise, it certainly isn't stale & each entry is very different than the previous)...and because of those choices that the filmmakers made, they did manage to create a pervasive atmosphere of unrelenting dread which runs throughout (both versions) of the film. So don't go watching Alien 3 expecting things to be all rosey because they are dealing with an Alien after all...My own recommendation is to watch the theatrical version first (then later on perhaps watch the Assembly Cut to see how the film/story could have been, and like I said, it may mostly feel like a completely different film to you). That totally up to you of you want to continue with the Alien franchise...(Sigourney Weaver is in the next two entries but she isn't in the two Alien Vs Predator films nor is she in the two prequel Prometheus/Alien films sadly). Keep these movie reactions coming (no matter what film you watch, even any Alien ones). 😁👍

It's great you got the director's cut too, although the theatrical one has its advantages (we only learn about Newt when they find her for example). I love both movies a lot but they are very different. This one is more fun to rewatch, but the first has that irreplaceable originality and tension. James Cameron loves to use the same actors, Sigourney, Bill Paxton, Michael Biehn, Jenette Goldstein... You're very perceptive and you comments and reactions are great! On the creepy themes I'm gonna insist on vampires lol, either the movie Interview with the Vampire (1994) or the amazing series (2022, S1, trailer for S2 just dropped) or even Bram Stoker Dracula (1992).

If you watch the scene carefully, Ripley makes a non-verbal deal with the queen: Let us go and I won't kill your babies (It goes like this: "See that flame I project it the air? ok, now I'm pointing the thing at your eggs"). The queen first seems to agree by sending her goons away. But then when one egg opens near Ripley and Newt, Ripley takes it as a breaking of the deal, so she exacts the threat she's made.
@thecocoacouch
@thecocoacouch 7 ай бұрын
The reason I was confused was because all this is true, but the egg hatching and Ripley killing it actually felt more like Ripley breaking the deal since nothing attacked her. She could have just ran right! That’s why I was questioning her choice. People have said it was more for closure and that her breaking the deal in a sense was for her and her trauma since the place was already going to blow up.
