April 2015, I was at Calgary Comic Expo, the main guests were the entire cast of Aliens. On the last day, at the closing announcement, they had Bill Paxton do his "game over" speech to close the show instead. The whole show stopped as soon as we all realized it was not the normal announcer - thousands of people all at once broke out laughing. Rest in peace Bill, you are missed.

I love that they referenced his "Game over" speech in the first Halo game. Also, did you know Alien was referenced by Arthur C. Clarke in 2010? As the Soviet and American engineers first board the derelict USS Discovery the ship is cold, dark, and very creepy. One says to the other, "Just watch out for the cat." The other responds with, "Who the hell thought it was a good idea to put that movie on a real spaceship."

A funny little detail about Michael Biehn is that he's actually using the same model of shotgun in both Terminator and in this film, the Ithaca 37. This is likely a small nod to the prior role, especially given the prominence of the weapon in both films, but a really cool detail is that when Michael Biehn played a character in The Mandalorian (I won't spoil anything about that), his character uses a scatter blaster (energy shotgun) that looks an awful lot like a Star Wars-ified Ithaca 37. It's a little prop detail but I rather like it.

The joke "she thought they meant illegal aliens and signed up" was based on truth. The actress Jenette Goldstein (who is 100 percent Jewish and 0 percent Hispanic, by the way) showed up to the casting call dressed like a Mexican migrant farm worker because she thought that's what the movie "Aliens" was going to be about. The casting director thought that was so funny that he offered her the part on the condition she play the role in the Mexican immigrant character. At one of my former jobs, my favorite partner to work with was a short Mexican girl, and she reminded me so much of Vasquez because she was so tough and dedicated to the work, just like I was. 37:00 The fight with the power loader is set up waaaaay back in the beginning, at the inquest, where the company revokes Ripley's license, which forces her to find low-level work at the docks, where she learns to operate the power loader. Which she would never need to know as a flight officer. Unlike other movies where the "hero" automatically knows how to do everything.

Checkov's power loader...
@bonchbonch Жыл бұрын
Well, Ripley automatically knows how to do a lot in this film, and everything else, she instantly learns despite being 57 years behind in experience. She masters marine weaponry in minutes and even understands that firing bullets would blow up the fusion reactor even though that would be Burke's realm of knowledge. I think she's far too powerful, all-knowing, and invincible in this movie.
@miller-joel Жыл бұрын
@@bonchbonch Hicks teaches her how to fire the weapons. Imagine that, a man teaching something to a woman. The horror! You don't need 57 years to learn how to fire and reload a pulse rifle. She ASKS what the pulse rifles fire, she doesn't KNOW. She's obviously way smarter than Burke, and that's no high bar.
@bonchbonch Жыл бұрын
@@miller-joel She masters a marine pulse rifle in 15 minutes when it took the marines probably weeks of weapons training. She's just a space trucker. Hell, she takes on an entire hive alone when a squad of trained marines couldn't survive. She even holds off a facehugger, something nobody else has done in the entire series--even Kane couldn't keep one off his face despite wearing a helmet! I think she's too powerful and invincible in this film and that she was more believable in the first one.
@miller-joel Жыл бұрын
@@bonchbonch She doesn't "master" it. She learns how to fire it. Basically, how to pull the trigger. That doesn't take weeks. No, she's not a space trucker. She's a flight officer. The socio-economic stratification was clear in the original, and here. You have the workers, Brett and Parker, and the officers, Dallas and Ripley. In Aliens, the Marines even mock her as Snow White. Hicks and Apone are blown away that she knows how to operate the power loader. Kane didn't see the facehugger coming, so there was nothing to hold off. The helmet had nothing to do with it. Ripley knows what a facehugger is, and she's actively trying to avoid it. She's not omniscient or invincible, she's resourceful and highly motivated. You need better arguments.

Sigourney Weaver was excellent in the first movie and she's even better in his one. The character dynamics aren't overly complicated, but they're powerful and compelling. Everyone's character adds just the right amount to the mix, with Ripley's interactions with Newt being particularly well done. James Cameron used a lot of the same themes again in "Terminator 2"... including having a kicka$$ female lead, lots of guns and explosions, being hunted by seemingly unstoppable foes, motherhood, artificial humanoids, and those same artificial humanoids acting in ways which redeemed them as being more human than they'd been previously depicted. Overall, "Aliens" is one of the finest action/horror/sci-fi movies ever.
Nice work on the editing, also your outro's are actually interesting, so yea, well done Whim

One of the best movies, and greatest sequels of all time. Cameron based the entire story on the Vietnam War, where a low tech army smashed a high tech army, and the story was laced with PTSD through Ripley's character. Ripley's reasoning for returning to LV-426, is the same as Vietnam Vets, who hated every minute of being in the war, but would sign up for a 2nd, 3rd and sometimes even a 4th tour of duty, regardless of how terrible it was.

Very cool observation that “Burke was the android of this movie.” You’re totally right! Ash > Burke (Psychopath betrayer) Lambert > Hudson (Hysterical, loses their shit in a crisis) Dallas > Hicks (Steady, dependable, looks out for his people) Parker > Apone (Wise cracking black guy who delivers one-liners)

Another sugestion is The Dead Zone(1983). Imho it;s easily the best adaptation of a Stephen King novel to the big screen. Tom Skerritt From Alien has a fair size role in it. Don't want to give any spoilers but there's such an uncanny resemblance of one of the main characters to a certain well known individual. There was also a series created from it that went for 6 seasons.

In the late 90s I got to go behind the scenes of the now sadly closed ‘Alien War’ attraction at Londons Trocadero Centre. They had a load of amazing props; including Dietrich’s armour, several smart guns & flamethrowers from the production. Also there were two art deco dog sculptures, which had featured in a deleted scene in Alien 3. Fun facts: When they went to Acton Power station in West London to film Tim Burtons Batman, the sets of the Alien hive were still there. For a long time, the Alien Queen was the single largest puppet ever created for a film. There’s also a deleted scene which shows what happened to Burke. Carrie Henn (Newt) is now a school teacher, but is still very much involved with Aliens. During the filming of the escape through the air ducts, Carrie Henn repeatedly messed up her lines, so that she could slide down the chute. Also, when they were filming the sequence of her in the water, she spend a lot of time just hanging out with the performer who was playing the Alien. According to Henn they just say their dangling their feet into the water & chatting; I just picture Newt & her Xenomorph friend hanging out 😂 Al Matthews (Sgt Apone) was Vietnam Veteran & used his past experience to help with the training of the rest of cast during pre-production. Please, please ignore those who say otherwise & make sure you round off the trilogy by watching the Assembly Cut of Alien 3. Alien 3 was David Fincher (Seven, Social Network etc) directorial debut & is what I consider to be a failed masterpiece. It has been disowned by its director & was the product of too much interference by the studio. Even to this day, is remains a film that splits opinion amongst fans of the series. Visually, it’s absolutely stunning & although the script isn’t perfect, it does serve a purpose in Ripley’s story arc. The Assemby Cut fixes multiple issues from the theatrical cut & also reintroduces several scenes. It is now my preferred version of the film; & without giving anything away, I do prefer part of the theatrical cuts ending. It was also the last film that the legendary Jordan Cronenweth (Blade Runner) would serve; albeit briefly as Director Of Photography on. Cronenweth left the production just after filming began due to his deteriorating health relating to Parkinson’s Disease.

Michael Biehn, aka Reese wasn't the original actor chosen to play Hicks. He replaced the previous actor and reshot his scenes. @@ryanclark6402 toofab: Now that there's all this talk about diversity in film - do you think you would be cast as Vasquez today? Jenette: Hmm. No. I mean, people with Jewish last names are Latino, like my son is Pablo. Pablo Goldstein. He's Mexican-Jewish. So you don't want to stereotype what Hollywood thinks is Latino. But there should be, obviously, roles available in a wide range of ethnicities, I think. You know, at the time, they were looking for an actress who was big and muscular, and they were wanting to cast a bodybuilder because they didn't think there were any actresses who had, you know, a physique that they wanted. And so that was a big part of what they were looking for, and they were kind of shocked that there was a trained actress who actually had the physique. You know what? I tell you the truth: I have never been cast, or given the opportunity to audition for a short, freckle-faced Jewish girl who is half-Russian and half-Moroccan and Brazilian. So, I don't think I would work very much if that's all I was able to read for.
@ryanclark6402 Жыл бұрын
@@jauntx You might be missing my point a little, so I’l clarify. I have no gripes with the actress or her portrayal of the part. She nailed it. Bang on, exactly the physique and attitude they were apparently looking for. She rules every scene she’s in. My issue was that once they found the perfect actress, they didn’t adjust the role at all to more accurately reflect their casting decisions. If you think the short Jewish girl with freckles (who also happens to be ripped and rugged) is exactly what the film needs for the role of “Vasquez”, you find yourself with two options: make the actress look like the role, or change the role to better suit the actress. Given the actress’s performance, I see no reason she couldn’t have been equally badass portraying “Goldberg” or “Rubenstein” or, heck, even “Smith/Jones” without all the makeup needed to make her “Vasquez.” Change what’s on the page, not what’s on the camera. For another, better iteration of how this could have happened, see Denise Crosby and Marina Sirtis in the casting of ST:TNG.

Watched a few of your other reactions. I didn’t realize how new to this you are. I think you’re doing a great job and I really like what you bring up at the end of each video. I’m not sure if you’re aware of the sci-fi series called Firefly? One of the best ones out there but it only went one season. Some behind the scenes nonsense and squabbling that had the episodes aired completely out of order that turned a lot of people off. It still has a huge “Browncoat” fan base and eventually a movie was released in theatres to help finish the series somewhat. It’s called Serenity and it has the best start to a movie that I’ve ever seen. The rest of it is pretty damn good as well. Some say you don’t have to watch the series to appreciate the movie but I don’t agree. Not sure if you would want to do reactions to Firefly but if so, there’s only 14 episodes. Keep up the great work!
