One of the first things I notice when I upgraded to 4K TV was the eye details. How they eyes shine, etc. I also think that Terminator 2 looked ultra fantastic in Ultra HD. Now with your review Aliens is on my list of must have 4k's. Thanks.

If you liked T2 then I'm not the slightest bit surprised that you don't see the problem with Aliens. T2 was one of the worst 4K discs ever released. ALL the actors looked like T600's with rubber skin. It will be studied in film schools as the definitive example of how NOT to do DNR.

The Special Edition I the only way to watch Aliens now, especially after Alien Isolation. To me, this movie is the greatest sci-fi and one of the Top 3 sequels ever made. The Godfather Part II and Terminator 2 are the other contenders. Sigourney Weaver shouldve won Best Actress. Thanks to James Cameron's writing and Sigourney Weavers acting, Ellen Ripley is one of the greatest, strongest, most iconic female characters ever put on film. I cant wait to buy this 4K.

The positive review is encouraging. I jumped on the Abyss pre-order (because I definitely wanted an upgrade from the 25-year-old-non-anamorphic DVD stretch-fest that I will now keep for pure nostalgia), but held off on Aliens & True Lies to see what the reviews were like. Sounds like Aliens is worth the upgrade, and I’ll hang onto my Spanish (bootleg?) release blu-Ray of True Lies

I just received my copy in the mail and watched it last night, I thought it looked great. Yes it does appear that the film grain has been reduced. However I think it looks great in 4K, I have no problems with this 4K disc, I have a huge collection and yes some older films I have do have grain, and I don't mind if its not to heavy.. But I think this film looks really, really, great..

I would have liked to hear more LFE, but Aliens is one of the best 4K upgrades I've seen so far (and I have over 400 x 4K titles). This is what the 4K format was made for -- clean, detailed and just enough grain to still feel filmic. Can't wait to get The Abyss 4K. If it ever comes back in stock ...

I'm with you on this, I love the removal of the grain, although in a lot of scenes there is very light layer of grain. I can never understand why some people love grainy films so much. It's so distracting and unnatural. I love a clean picture. This looks really good, I heard that AI was used to clean it up, if this is the future of film restoration, I'm all for it.

The Abyss and Aliens are both absolutely stunning and clearly use a different technique or pipeline than True Lies. Neither of those have the weird AI face effect that I can see, and both are extremely clear and sharp unlike True Lies which is a smudge fest.

Minus the motion smoothing frame stuttering when things are in motion. It's really great that they smeared a bunch of stuff all over the screen and got rid of that "pesky" film grain. Am I right!? Totally the same movie.... ...totally

Thank you for the great video. All the recent 4k releases including Aliens look amazing to me. I don’t think it ever looked this good in the past. It won’t look better in the many future years either. To me, much more details can be seen in the 4k release despite some small details possibly being lost because of the modern technology.

I'm with you. I agree. It looks great. I picked it up today at Walmart up here in Canada. In store and on a side note BEST BUY sucks so so bad for movies especially in store. They suck so bad. I had no idea this movie was even releasing. I heard nothing about it, made a stop at Walmart this fine Saturday just to see if they by chance have anything good on Blu-ray or even better and rarer, 4k. I scoped out everything twice and on the second sweep, 2 copies of this. It didn't look "Alien" to me. I didn't recognize Ripley and Newt on the cover. Up here in Canada everything is printed in both English and French. I saw the small ALIENS logo written twice and I STILL didn't clue in "Woah... ALIENS I'm 4K..." I'm thinking "Aliens? what? A double feature? Is this like Alien 8 and 9? Which I am not interested in" Then I did the math that's Ripley and the kid from..... and wow, it's Aliens... That's a big for sure on 4k at $25. Exactly why I came in here. What surprised me was that it's a brand new release. Early March 2024. Walmart pulls through again (go figure). It was the same with Sleepy Hollow 4k. I expected a display at Best Buy on the day of release of that movie. It was as if it never happened. It never did end up happening either. 3 weeks later, venture into Walmart and there it is. I think it's an awesome set. 3 discs. The movie looks great IMO, I have the 2010 Blu-ray as well anyway but the special features in this set, if you don't already have them, are a plenty. I'd say they are almost worth the price alone.

Question. Is the 1080p version that comes in the box the new remaster just scaled down? Or is it the same blu-ray version from a decade ago. I don't yet have a 4k player but I'd be interested in watching this version at 1080p, and whenever I DO get a 4k player, then I'd have it.

I find it quite funny that dedicated fans can do amazing 4K transfers of what was once considered as lost media (Super Mario 86' Anime Movie & Project A-Ko movies), but multi billion dollar companies cannot... They just throw these beloved movies in Topaz Video AI and call it a day. It's just sad that we waited an eternity... for this? Not even a new scan but just an upscaled version that destroyed all fine details with it. I expected more. Like the Jurassic Park and Alien 79' transfers, which are stunning.

This is a film shot on 35mm from 1986. Film has grain. It’s not digital and it wasn’t shot in 2024 either. This is the core of the argument not from trolls or haters but fans who want films to be preserved, not altered. While some people like these changes, this release could have been a lot more positive if they’d included a DNR and a non-DNRed version. AI enhancing is a whole different conversation but needless to say, the movie studios would love to save money by completing moving to AI in order to feed the greedy executives. If allowed, nothing will be preserved.

Again, another overly dramatic OTT comment. This isn't dnr in the same fashion of T2. Also, it's very much a Cameron thing (and perhaps a Lucas thing). I got the release of American Graffiti last year and the DNR was terrible. I immediately got rid of it on eBay. Titanic and the Abyss (haven't seen Aliens yet) to me look absolutely fine. I still have my Aliens blu ray and am looking forward to seeing a new interpretation of Aliens. The Abyss never had a blu ray release, so this 4k is a huge upgrade. Same for true Lies. I get the feeling some people just like to be glass half empty and have a moan. I could understand if these looked like T2... But they don't. They're still detailed, minus the grain. I love film grain, but having seen Titanic, Abyss and with True Lies and Aliens on order I know what to expect with the other two. I think most of the people complaining are just bandwagon jumping and don't actually have the discs.

@@benpascall4297 You have your opinion which differs from mine. I’m a film lover and have been for over 40 years. I have only witnessed Aliens and True Lies which I prefer the Spanish Blu-ray, warts and all. Have you seen it? I also prefer Aliens on Blu-ray over this new release. Have you seen Alien on UHD disc? How would you compare it against this 4K Aliens disc? Different movies of course but two very different approaches. For me the issue is that artificial smoothening of facial textures makes actors look unnatural, grain reduction and other changes makes the film look less like a product of its time. Some people may be jumping on the bandwagon, others have waited years for these releases and genuinely disappointed by the results. I’d also argue that there are also some who are just defending their purchases or siding with so called KZbin influencers who seemed to have teamed up in defence of JC. Of course we’re all free to express our opinions however much they differ.

Others have reported with these new Cameron 4Ks that the stickers are damaging the slip covers. Did your sticker come off the slip cover without residue or damage?

I took the sticker off true lies and it was difficult. I used alcohol to get the leftovers off. As my sticker was close to the edge, some of the coloring came off. After that, I didn’t try with abyss or aliens. It’s a shame because the cover is ruined by the presence of the sticker.

Watched it yesterday and this transfer is all over the place. The film now look like TV episode. It is over Sharpened, it as smear, loss of detail in many medium shots. Many will love this transfer because that's how they want their films but am on the side of protecting films which were shot on film to look like film.

Aliens looks better than expected. I had it on the Blu-ray set. I can tell the difference because DNR was used to much on the 4k but with adjusting settings on the 4 player made up for that. Yes it's to polished. The Blu-ray in the set has the film grain still their The 4k polished the dirt as they say.Still a good Disc with great sound. What happens with to much DNR it removes the grain to much a changes the Grittyness. I'm watching both the 4k on my 55inch 4k TV and the Blu-ray in my bedroom to compare. So far it's good but different like Invasion of the DNR GRAIN snatchers😅.good Video 😎

I found the 4K remaster jaw droppingly detailed, I love it. I'm not a fan of grain myself, though I can see why some might prefer that aesthetic. I guess it's probably similar to how some people may prefer different colour grading. Now if someone could do something similar for Stargate SG-1!

He removed a considerable amount of it, and he upscaled it using AI. Not only did he remove detail (grain), he then let a computer program guess what should be there and added fake detail that never existed. Didn't even bother to re-scan the original negative, either.

I think Cameron wanted the 4K to look like a new movie. Look at the opening credits. Very crisp,not at all like 1986 graphics. Didn’t do the same work on the closing credits. They look like 1986.

Why are people so unable to appreciate a movie made in a specific time and place with the tools they had available? Do you not have any patience or ability to see beyond "HD = better"? Just absurd. Preservation of art is important and this literally erases so much of what made the movie what it was. The fact that they removed film grain suggests film grain isn't a part of a movie's look, feel, and era. Same with color grading, set detail, etc. You can like it all you want but why isn't there an original version available on the Blu ray? George Lucas 2.0 right here and you're not even about to notice the severity of this.

@@jarg8 I appreciate older movies and I totally agree about a bluray. If this is something that actually happens quite a few times more then I would hope to have two different updated 4k options. And/or even include them, instead of blurays, in the 4k release. Especially since they're inches towards $40 for most releases. But I applaud James Cameron for this release. The look, feel, etc is definitely modern. It's 4k!! If that's how people or directors feel today you can't tell them they're wrong. I know the majority of people with 4k ability watch flicks way too bright but that's their prerogative. I think that's mainly how Samsung can still sell 4k TV's and not have Dolby Vision 😆 But that's also how 4k settings gives anyone the ability to watch movies any way they like to. So to come full circle, there should be some kind of release for cinephiles. Kinda like how we have vinyl records and CD's.

1 significant error in the Spec Ed... when we move to LV-426 and the admins are talking about claims and rights being honored... that needs to be re-edited for placement because AFTER that discussion it cuts to the rover with Newts family discovering the ship and then talking.. revealing they haven't radioed admin @ base yet.. re-cut to: Rover traveling and discovering the derelict ship.. they state how they need to check in and confirm their claim.. Cut to admin control hub with supervisor asking about the claim being honored..full discussion Cut BACK to rover and the parents gearing up to go explore.. rest follows as normal .. Second issue.... Ripley asks Burk DIRECTLY "We're going to wipe them out, not to retrieve, not to exam?" Burk replies "That's the plan" Proves that Burk knows about the Aliens and the potential asset they can be.. Ripley should have seen thru him then and said "oh fuck no"

Hi Thanks for the review. I watched the 4k DisneyPlus streaming version. It looked quite good. that was the theatrical version. I live in The Netherlands. The dutch release on 4k BD comes out at end of April (2024). I will pre-order it on 4k Bluray. No matter some DNR, it is my nr 1 favorite film ever and i just WANT TO OWN IT ON 4k UBD. Hope the dutch 4k release has the longer S.E. on it too.

This is a great idea for a video before Alien: Romulus releases! I do like Alien 3, but I don't hold it in the same regard as Alien and Aliens. I think it really got mangled in the editing/assembly process, but I appreciate its uniqueness a lot.

Visually Aliens 4K is amazing! The real problem is the complete absence of the LFE channel. So you get to see the movie, you get to hear the movie, you don't get to experience the movie.

The hate is justified because the "transfer" looks atrocious. Badly AI Sharpened and Upscaled. Initially sure it looks good but once you actually look a bit closer then the whole thing falls apart and becomes clear how awful it actually looks. It is just the initial wow this looks sharp and then very quickly you see that it's horrible and fake. We want rescans and real remasters and restorations like Arrow, Second Sight and so many labels and studios do. Not an AI upscale of the old blu ray with fake HDR. This release may be passable but it could have actually been great and supporting this product and the use of AI is actually dangerous and damaging to the industry. If you actually think this somehow looks good then I dont know what to say to you. Just look at it again and you'll probably see it, I dont know how you wouldn't. Being quite familiar with AI upscaling and sharpening, it is clear as day from second one what it is and how bad it looks. To the more average person it may take a bit more time to see but soon this will be like the old Universal Blu-rays that where horrible and DNR'd to death and then sharpened, they got good reviews when they came out and now everyone looks back and shudders at how horrific and damaging they were. This will be the same, average people just dont know what looks right and wrong yet but they will.

As an Alien fan, I cannot disagree more regarding watching the Special edition over the Theatrical release. The extra scenes massively spoil the pace, and show us what we didn't need to be shown. This is Ripley's story, so whatever happens on LV426 before she arrives, should not be common knowledge to the audience. Not knowing adds to the dread, adds to the tension. And when the Colonial Marines first encounter the Xenomorph, it hits way harder. Theatrical >Special on first viewing. If you wanna watch the Special after the durst viewing, sure.

I've never been a big fan of film grain and I'll never, ever understand why people not only love it so much, but go into apoplectic fits over grain reduction, or removal. There are some 4ks with such high levels of grain and these people say it looks fantastic. I don't get it. Some people got death threats over giving Aliens a positive review... Madness

The hate is because a lot of scenes look A.I. enhanced, and the grain (e.g., details) has been scrubbed from a lot of the film. Wherever the details are retained but the grain is not present, the presentation is waxy and artificial. Also, there's no actual HDR. Some guy did his own color-correction and HDR and in 20 minutes his looked twenty times better than what Cameron put out. We're paying a _premium_ for 4k, so we should get a premium product, and we should not buy when we don't get it, and we should complain loudly and make it known that we didn't buy.

If you like the look of A.I.-generated images, then this release is definitely for you, but I don't think you can reasonably argue that people _shouldn't_ be disappointed that the movie has not been restored, it's been artificially re-rendered to look CGI.

The big problem is how inconsistent it is. Some scenes look great some look overly scrubbed, overly sharpened and faces look waxy. To me it seems like a really lazy transfer where they just blasted a layer of processing over the the whole thing and called it a day. It does NOT look like the scrubbing/processing was optimised on a scene by scene basis as it should have been. I honestly don't understand what film makers and studios do this. They should clean the film negative (physically not digitally) scan it, colour grade it and release it with grain and detail intact. Using a quality 4K scan as a source It is easy to create fan edits with all the detail scrubbed out by overly aggressive DNR filters and sharpening algorithms if that is your cup of tea but it is impossible to take this is as a source and recover the lost detail. After T2 and now Aliens I have zero faith in the upcoming release of The Terminator.

Some people might be getting a little too animated about films being DNR and scrubbed and using preconceived ideas of it. I'm sure the streaming version might look fake and plasticky but if the revised film has great detail and not overly processed is it really bad?

Aliens loses that war movie feel when Cameron tinker with color for the earlier blu-ray and now with the latest 4K release, he nearly scrub all the film grain and further tinker with the colors so that it can look like his Avatar movie. This makes the first movie looks even more drastically different than the second one. I don't know why there are so many blu-ray reviews on KZbin defending this decision knowing the backlash. I'm fine with having no grain in his newer movies like Avatar or even older underwater movies like The Abyss but for Aliens it just changes the mood/feel of the movie totally. The DNR and upscaling also made some scenes look even softer than the previous blu-ray and the same issue also happens with the 4K True Lies blu-ray. Abysmal.

@@benpascall4297 as a big Aliens fan, of course I do and that includes the figures by NECA and Hot Toys too haha. I was quite disappointed by the look and feel of the movie in this 4K blu-ray more so than the normal one. If you see the original Aliens (I have the HD broadcast version of this, the original DVD and the laser disc to compare to) before the first James Cameron remastered blu-ray, the metal grating looks like actual metal(metallic grey hues) and doesn't have that blue/ cyan hue that made the environment look a little plastic and fake. The grain also gave it that war time atmosphere that's totally gone in the 4K blu-ray. Some of the sharpening cause faces to look way too smooth. You can say grain is not detail though it does give it texture, but by losing the original color timing and that filmic look, it just feels like a different movie. Try to imagine turnimg up the saturation for Saving Private Ryan and apply a different color filter. Maybe you don't mind, but many people who watched the original will feel something is totally off and the WW2 atmosphere is gone. I will also say the best special features still belong to the Collector's Edition laser disc. The documentary is totally uncut as you hear cast and crew cursing on set.

It's not a real 4k transfer. It's an upscale from the 2010 edition. It's just sitting in an HDR container it's not actual doing anything. Not a serious review.

Many of the complaints are justified. Having watched Aliens on 4K just recently, and yes, the set-up was correct for the 4K to be viewed. The film looked artificial. There has been A.I. added to give the film a smooth feel, and the grain is very marginal. In some areas, Aliens looks too clean for my liking. I saw the movie when it came out in 1986, and this 4K with enhancements looks very artificial or unnatural. But to many people's eyes, the film looks acceptable. True Lies is a total mess. As for The Abyss, it's probably the better of the three, but that's not saying much.

2001 and Alien are examples of how to do a 4K release of an older film. T2 is a case study in using excessive processing to create a waxy, greasy mess out of your actors faces... Aliens strays too close to the latter for my liking.

I can kinda understand the hate but think it's become too emotionally charged. There are some horror hard-core fan boys that only watch 80 horror on VHS which it the only true way to watch it. I think that's a bit extreme but I do get it, gritty films in especially gritty film quality it's a very unique experience. Cleaner film with less grain does risk the "grittyness" and I would pounce in it too but its not just grind house film quality that matters. If the detail remains and perhaps even enchanted you can get that same dirty feel with a real dirty face in UHD. Still need my copy but I won't be so hostile to a clean picture especially if it's really high detail of some nasty looking imagery.

So much divided opinion on these so to be frank I am buying Abyss and Aliens and if I think it looks great I couldn’t give a damn what anyone else thinks. I own over 500 UHD’s so I am happy with my judgement. Oldies particularly those filmed on 70mm tend to be the best, Spartacus, Lawrence of Arabia, Ten Commandments, My Fair Lady, Vertigo, Casablanca.

I picked up these 3 Cameron movie releases and they look absolutely stunning! Reference quality that has never looked so good. Anyone knocking the work that has been done on these are nit-picking. The sound and the picture quality blew me away after hearing all the hate from some of these people that said it was horrible. I've owned all these movies on previous formats including laser disc back in the day and what was done to these films is extraordinary!

The "Hate" is real simple. But before I get to that lets just get this out of the way first... The 4K releases of Aliens, True Lies and The Abyss are the best ways to watch these movies! (Unfortunately) Period. Now, why is there "Hate"..? Because James Cameron is a fuc**** Idiot! That's why! The Audio in these movies are all B- at Best! Considering movie titles like The Frighteners Mid 90's or other 4K restorations, the sound in these movies mentioned above are Muted, lacking in detail, no Power, depth or drive to them. This didn't NEED to be the way. He chose to sign off on this hot garbage. The same way he did with T2. The fact that movies like The Incredible Hulk, Ready Player One, New Batman, Hacksaw Ridge ect sound SOOOOOOOOO Good, Bold and Raw but one of the BEST movies ever made (T2) is still till this day considered one of the worst audio experiences in 4K is just Crazy! Not to mention the fact that the Waxy-ish look to some of these characters is over the top. Rant complete.

Removing the film grain is removing the detail. The grain is part of the film whether Cameron likes it or not. That's not the only reason it's a poor transfer, though... it's the clear failures in guesswork that the AI has attempted. Removing detail, then trying to add detail that never existed? It's when people start ranting and raving like it's the end of the world. Is it great, no but in parts it looks great. The main issue for me is exactly what you said, the film grain. Some movies are fine without it but film grain was there in the first place and that was the overall picture and atmosphere. To have that taken away is odd. There are people out there that also don't like film grain but each to their own. I like it, I'm happy with it. Am I overjoyed by it? No! I do get it though and I understand that people will naturally be put off by it. I watched the 4K release yesterday, then watched the Blu Ray from the Quadrilogy release today. I prefer the 4k release.

This disc looks great in close-up shots and for wide shots. Medium shots make people seem sort of waxy. I'm torn because the movie looks better than it ever has without question, it's just that we have this sort of waxiness in many of the shots and it's tough to digest that. I've never been so torn on a release before. AI or not, this film is not missing detail. Rather, it's imposing a standard of clarity or 'definition' that our eyes know isn't quite right.

I thought it was damn good looking. I do not WANT grain. Thats the whole reasoning for 4k...to make it look GOOD. The Abyss however, I didnt really notice anything NEW looking......then again its never been on BD so. I will skip True Lies as I watched it again last year and hated it. Which is odd since when it came out I LOVED IT.....just didnt age well.
