These AI stories are so childish and dull :-( Letting the fight come close home is a very bad strategy, I would love to know why most authors think space battles will happen near home planets. That would be the last resort, not a defense strategy. Also, if there is an "empire", conqueror of worlds, you can be sure it will have many fleets, not just one. Specially if they only considered a single, weak planet inhabited by a species less powerful than some of the past conquests. Furthermore, if the alien command is so prideful and ashamed, I would expect nothing less than a surrender ambush, either capturing the human delegation or blowing up the ships when humans are close enough.
