The problem is time/distance. The chances we as a spieces are around at the same time as another AND one of us being capable of reaching another is SLIM TO NONE. @@aboveforever The only real viable way imho, logically speaking based on our current understanding, is that we or some other speices develops a ton of sentient AI's that are immortal or close too and then those AI reach out in search for inteligent life in the cosmos. At least that way human lifespan is no longer the issue. But distance still is. And then at that point why even bother creating this AI if your not going to be around to see if it found anything? But I think a civ would/will do this just to preserve thier legacy and memory for as long as possible in the hopes of getting to share thier story with another world. That would make it 58,750,000,000,000,000 miles away. It would take them 5,875,000,000,000 years to get to Earth from their planet. It would take another 5,875,000,000,000 years to get back. Altogether 117,500,000,000,000 years for the round trip. Now as mentioned above, the Earth is only 5,000,000,000 years old, and the universe is thought to be around 20,000,000,000 years old. That means these aliens would have had to start coming here 117,480,000,000,000 years before the universe existed. Even Houdini couldn't do that. Now, if aliens lived 100,000 light years away they would have had to start on their trip a looooooooooooong time ago. This all means that the probability that there are aliens visiting us is slim. But, if people want to believe that, then be my guest.
