I keep seeing Final Fantasy TCG keep rising from the dead over and over as the years go by. It never fully dies, but never thrives either.

I remember buying an X files CCG starter deck sometime in the 90s.

I remember trying to play this game back in the day. I actually had Ripley in my Marines deck.

Never heard of this CCG. I was always more of a fan of the various Alien movies. Really loved the first two. They were hit or miss after that but I really liked the last one (Covenant). Anyways, it will be interesting to see how Lorcana fares!

It is my firm belief that Flesh and Blood would have folded already if it wasn't for stimulus money and finance flippers propping it up. It has a skeleton crew of actual players.

Isn't there a place where you can download all the cards?

I haven't looked. The game was never very popular, so if any group of people have put together a complete library of cards I'd be surprised.

@@FinalTrade I didn't know about it, I even thought it was a fan project when I saw it, but the style of the cards didn't look very modern.

So many crap CCGs came out in the mid 90's, even with strong themes they could easily die through bad cardstock, bad gameplay or bad art. Some games would garner interest and last 2-3 expansions but by that time the market had had enough time to compare with MTG and players faded back after a brief dalliance. I learnt early on that putting any money into these sideline games was generally a waste of money. There were a couple of good games that did unfortunately die, Original Net Runner (great art, great game, great flavour), Battletech wasn't bad either, Rage and Jyhad had their day, Star Wars was flawed but it was Star Wars. Some games were fun for a splash from the bargain bin, Ultimate Combat was cheap fun especially with cards like Body Odour and Bad Sushi. Galactic Empires had the worst artwork, it was so laughable that noone even wanted to try it, it could have been the best game on the planet but you just couldnt take it seriously. Fun times :)

I think you mention some good reasons why it was harder to succeed back then: a lot of bad games and everything compared to mtg. Not to mention that there were just less people interested in card games and less online spaces to boost communities and discoverability. There are good reasons to be sceptical of these new games but also the 90's were a long time ago.

@@hover2go Thats a good point. I would like to believe that the entry bar is alot higher these days but with the recent flurry of kickstarter CCGs being offered trying to ride the recent success of FaB and MetaZoo, maybe the bar has dipped a little recently. Its a tough ask going up against MTG, similar to wargaming coming against Games Workshop but some companies can eek out a living in the shadows of the big boys, maybe for a few years maybe even a decade or more but it can be a big fall if they make a wrong step.

@@mangoman9290 I'm mostly interested in where FaB and MetaZoo land. They both have very different and passionate players and collectors, but neither is the size of MTG or Pokemon yet and that's a vulnerable place to be for so many reasons.

@@hover2go Small games have alot less scope for failure than the big guys. WotC or GW can have a failure of product(s) or releases and the juggernaught rolls on. If a smaller game has a failed product it can easily be seen as doomsday and people start moving toward the exits, they walk a very fine line and I dont think it ever gets much better for them.

One big factor: game design is really hard. Making a fun game with infinite replayability, that also isn't so complicated that it scares off new players, is very hard.
