Alienware m18 Review: A Massive 18-Inch Gaming Laptop (With Nvidia RTX 4090)

Just trying to reach out to those ordering on Dell - we placed 2 separate orders for these and both times we were charged for the super-duper premium protection plan that we did NOT order. And don't waste your time on the 2-day delivery - because it won't get there in 2 days. And, when you click on 2-day delivery, it will change spec/features that you wanted because it's only the premade spec machines that can get out in 2 days! Wanted 2 TB and the 2-day shipping rolled my order back to 1 TB & defaulted to the uber expensive protection plan. We are excited to try them out, just want to make sure everyone is going back and checking their receipts for things not ordered!

Yes., the configurator defaults to the Premium Protection plan, and you must be very careful when you check out because the slightest change will often trigger the plan to be added to the order even if you specify otherwise. Gamers Nexus blasted Dell for doing this, as it is a very scumbag move on their part. I also noticed that the 2-day shipping defaults to a pre-built system. But, I have ordered enough computers from Dell to know that they build their computers to spec per order. This helps them save money in the long run, as they are using inventory effectively on unsold merchandise. So, by experience, their 2-day shipping options tend to be lower-spec models built to be sold in boutiques like Best Buy and other electronic stores. Indeed, my first Ailenware was from Tiger Direct, and it was a low-spec model Alienware M17x r2. I still have it to this day, and it is still ticking along. I use the HDMI port as a second computer monitor when I troubleshoot them.

@@Mike_Jones281 The worst part was trying to get them to reverse the charges. They must be in Japan or an Asian country because the language barriers are very problematic. This alone will be a major deterrent in buying from them again. Also had to send mine back twice for repairs in the first month because it was doing all kinds of crazy, it was nothing short of BS hoop jumping with me (untrained in computer ops/system ops) for hours doing their work...Will give them credit that they did repair and return shipment very quickly. Final opinion, if you're not a buttons/whistles person who just wants to play a game and you want the basics to get game play that is smooth/quick/responsive, this was overkill and a waste.

The tech support side is outsourced to India. But every time I've had an issue with my laptop, they've come to my house and fixed it. Knock on wood, my M18 won't require repairs.

so after owning this laptop for the past 5 months here's my personal experience. the screen has lots of light bleeding and seems a common problem. the build quality is good but my previous model alienware 15 R3 felt better. I hade lots of software problems that apparently came from the alienware support assistant app conflicting with the Dell support assistant. I had to do a fresh restart and let only one app take care of all the updates. the alienware app that controls performances feels really buggy and I gave up playing with the configurations, I let the balanced one always running. except that everything is good. edit. in the Nvidia control panel also I had to manually select the option to use my graphic card, because automatically was only using the integrated one and never my 4070 for who knows what reasons.

I need 500 at the very miminum when I'm spending that kind of money.

So.. I recently Purchased an M18R1 with the 4090, 165hz screen and I13980Hk. To add, I recently made the decisions and purchased a Samsung 990Pro/ with 2- 32gb 5600mhz Kingston Fury RAM cards from my research and I'm going to install them before 1st power-up. I'm going to have it all here and will put it together soon "couple of days" I'm super excited like its my first PC again 😆. TRULY, I hope that it will last as long as my "OG Nebula Red" M15r1 that I've beaten up for years and still use it today. I truly hope it impresses me like the M15 did too. Really depends how badly you want it, lol. You can configure plenty of 15" laptops that would be much easier to travel with. Take a look at your needs... Need it for work? Travel? How often will you take it with you? Occasional gamer? etc. Flying with precheck or something is always great because you don't have to take your laptop out of the bag.

I have this and I will say that it is remarkably heavy and no normal computer bags will fit it. If you're actually planning to put this on your lap you should consider downsizing - grab a 10 lb dumbell and throw it in the oven at 300 for about 2 hours and then rest that on your thighs and you'll have a good simulation of what this is like. The business side with the keys actually does stay cool but it will shoot hot ash onto the mouse hand and it might make you sterile.

I have this laptop and I hope others have had a better experience. Audio issues - laptop audio fuzzes every few minutes. Issue doesn't happen w/ bluetooth, so hardware issue. Trackpad - Crap. Charger - Chinese made non-magnetic crap. Does NOT agree with the battery. Have had many charging issues. Charging port - loose. Charger falls out often Stability - crashes every 1-3 days Adware - xbox ads on startup Bloatware - EVERYWHERE Fans - super powerful - but NO adjustability. They turn on for overclocking or if it gets really hot but ZERO customization. RGB keyboard - Software isn't terrible, but if you pick a color changing mode and slow it down, it's as jerky as a slideshow. Expected better for 3k. Battery - you get about 1 hour 20 minutes up to 2.5 hours of internet browsing. An hour of youtube. Or about 40 minutes gaming. HILARIOUSLY bad. I mostly use it plugged in, so I don't care much, but you will NOT be doing a raid of ANY kind on battery power. It DOES have a usb charging port limited to 100 watts (out of 300-330 watts). You could use a battery bank to offset, but meh. Positives - Under some load with overclocking active, CPU is 100 degrees FARENHEIT. GPU is at 116 degrees FARENHEIT. Cooling is monstrously powerful. Boot times - about 12 seconds. Load times - FAST When it runs smoothly - VERY POWERFUL. Crazy framerates. Screen - not amazing (I got the best one) but not bad. Overall - The last computer I had - The predator 17x was 1400 dollars cheaper, could run great titles, and gave me almost zero problems. I would buy the new razer instead.

Also the vaunted BOSS acoustics do not sound very good compared to competitors. I'm already going to change the second laptop Alienware and now I'm at a loss what to choose, since the ASUS ROG Strix Scar 18 is ahead in all respects. How could it go down like that? Is it a problem to put the best screen, for a top-end laptop at least?

Stay away from Alienware. I bought a laptop M17 R3 back in 2020. I barely use it(until now not more than 100 hrs). I have my gaming desktop for my main use. 2 weeks ago I disassemble the desktop for cleaning and I used the laptop. Suddenly the laptop died while was plugged to the wall. I've sent it to a shop for a diagnostic and they found the power-connector burned half of the motherboard. I wanted to buy a new one, but in the process to contact customer service/tech support, they ask me to pay. Pay for what, for asking how much it cost a new motherboard?!

I would just get the msi gt 77 titan with the 4k 144 hz mini led display with hdr 1000 with 1,000 nits since I need 1,000 nits since I crank the brightness at 100% 24/7 with static images with no risk of burn ins. There are not much gaming monitors that have hdr 1000 with 1, 000 nits with 4k mini led display, the gaming monitor I would get would be the samsung odyssey g8 neo 32 inch curve 4k 240 hz mini led display, i love 4k curve displays, once I gotten into 4k curve displays ever since 2014, I can't go back to a flat display, the only exception would be a flat display like a phone or laptop, however the display has to be 4k since I'm already used to 4k, even my primary phone the sony xperia 1 iv has a 4k 120 hz oled display with 21:9 aspect ratio with 10 bit bt.2020 with 1,000 nits. I have the 2022 razer blade 15 with 4k 144 hz display but the screen is not that bright and it's brightness is comparable to my samsung chromebook with the 4k super amoled display since they are not that bright since there brightness are meh mediocre. I just wish my sony phone has a hifi dac like the lg v series of phones but at least it has a headphone jack and a micro sd card slot.

PERFORMANCE: You didn't mention that the laptop 4090 is NOWHERE NEAR the performance of the desktop 4090 (the desktop 4090 often has TWICE the FPS of the highest end laptop 4090, quite sad). It's comparable to a desktop 3070. AND the power requirement in the laptop is KEY to whether you get the best laptop 4090 experience or not. Some manufacturers are selling these laptops with a TGP (total graphics power) of only 75 watts which will be EVEN SLOWER than the same laptop 4090 running with a TGP of 150 watts + 25W boost = 175W total.

The laptop 4090 is much better than the desktop 3070. It's more like the equivalent of somewhere between a desktop 4070 and desktop 4070ti. Regardless, it's an incredibly powerful GPU for a laptop and would be enough for most games/software.
