Today I waste my time and risk destroying my 3080 by disassembling it to change the thermal pads. The 3080 and 3090 sport very high VRAM or video memory temps during AAA gaming and mining, two tasks I put my GPU to. While the core clock remains nice and cool, the video ram climbs to 110C where it begins to throttle. The word on the street is changing thermal pads drops the temps 30C, if it sounds to good to be true...that's because it is.

Highly recommend you redo it because I have the same exact card as you from Alienware r10. My temps are 54c core, 88c memory at 50% fan speed, hashing at 95. What I did was instead of putting thermal pads, you put thermal paste around the vram heatsink contact part. Maybe thermal pads is too thick in those area is my guess? I used mx-4. Also I changed the vram pads that came stock, 1.5mm underneath the black heatsink. Don't think you open underneath the black heatsink in this video. On the backplate, I kept everything the same but did 2.0mm (stacked two 1.0mm) for the sides where the long small chips lined up are on the outskirts. Also, after running it hot, you can rescrew, retight them after because there is a break-in period. This should lower temps further. Hope this helps!
@Bvoswag

You can try tighting the screws in your current configuration but I suspect thermal paste vs thermal pads around the heatsink might be more viable.

@@Go_Birds there's 6-8 screws you remove, the backplate is the easiest to get to. After you remove the 4 main screws that holds the heatsink, the black plate is harder, need to use flathead where the screws are located and open up the black plate in those areas, well at least that's what I did.

Models have NOTHING to do with it. It does not need thermal pads on that section. 1st those thermal pads are not good, 2nd you cant just throw any size thermal pads on they need to match the same for same size 0.5, 1mm, 1.5mm 2mm etc get that wrong and they could be either stoping the contact, that thermal paste is also junk and you cant just top up thermal paste they are different with different compounds. Anyone doing this please follow these steps Take the thermal paste off and replace it Apply a good amount of decent paste such as Thermal Grizzly or MX4. Next replace all the thermal pads not just the vram as soon as you remove the heatsink they can split. If you dont know what size to use then either use a digital or even lay the pads next to each other and you should be able to tell what aize they are Use something like thermal grizzly or Gelid extreme are pretty good.

I assume you bought a pre-build as a way of getting a 3080. I have to say there doesn't look like there is good airflow in that case. While it may be a pain and a tad expensive, maybe consider buying something like a Phanteks P500A Digital RGB and some good Noctua fans and transfer all the components over to that case. That would probably do a lot for your thermals. Even if you change the thermal pads, you still need good airflow to cool that VRAM.

Did you see the alternative method where instead of new thermal pads you installed, some folks used thermal paste in that area and got good results. Edit- also, Some have taken off the GPU side black plate on the top of the VRAM and installed thermal pads between the VRAM and the black plate

+1 to using thermal paste instead of thermal pads between the plastic and the heat sink. It's the only thing that significantly dropped my temps.
@Go_Birds
@Go_Birds 3 жыл бұрын
@@RoccoHorvath yes- my theory is this: if you look at the heat sink, it’s possible that the heat from the gpu, when being dispersed on the heat sink, could actually HEAT the VRAM, as the black metal plate above the VRAM is presumably in contact. The thermal paste will help prevent this, and simultaneously help cool the VRAM. I purchased a R12 with a 3080 so it’ll be a couple of weeks before I get it so I’ve been doing a lot of reading because I’m unboxing and modifying the 3080 before I turn the thing on 😂
@Go_Birds
@Go_Birds 3 жыл бұрын
I’ll add that my theory is probably waaaay off but regardless it’s interesting that those who didn’t see results from thermal pads did with thermal paste.
@Bvoswag
@Bvoswag 3 жыл бұрын
that's exactly what I did, my temps are 88c mem at 50-55% fan speed doing 95mh/s hash. paste the heatsink ram area, redid the thermal pads on the vram 1.5mm, kept stock thermal pads on the backplate but added two 1.0mm (2.0 total) on the outside where the link strip of chips are. You can try 1.5mm there. Then retight the screws in after heating up the card, to break the pads in.

Dude, I have the same card. There are a bunch of us over at slickdeals who have taken it apart 1) Always repaste 2) Jack up the fan speed. I repasted, added 0.5mm pads between the vram heat sink and the main heat sink. I added 1mm pads to the back plate like you did. Try this: Lay computer on it’s right side and leave the cover off. You can raise the psu up to give better ventilation for the backplate. I’m in the process of adding new chassis fans but if you are still stock, that side cover adds 2 degrees to vram. Jack up the fan speed. I set my curve to 70% fan to around 48* on core temp. Your fans are dependent on core temp, not vram temp. Jacking up the fan made a huge difference for me. I’m getting 97 MH with memory clocked to +1050, power limit at 70%. Card is drawing 225w. VRAM between 88-90*

You are basically putting extra pads on top of the preinstalled plastic or metal cover. No wonder why it's not making much difference. Plenty of people are getting good results with non Dell OEM cards, your card may not be designed for this.

Just got my R12. First thing I did was swap the fans. One Noctura and One Corsair for the exhaust fan. Then I put the OEM fan in the front as a second fan. I have boot up issues. Black screen, flashing yellow light etc. Got it to boot up and then restarted to install updates. Black screen again. I read this can be an issue when messing with the fans. Any ideas?

To be honest, I think you did it wrong. Your GPU seems to have a black plastic piece where the actual VRAM is. You put thermal pads where they didn't belong too.. I got about a 20 - 25 degree drop on my 3090 FE so this is not a lie.

I think due to their design for this dual-fan 3080, there aren't too many options to reduce the heat. Most of them can only reduce like a few degrees. I just brought an R10 with water-cooled AMD 5800x and rtx3080. Comparing to your R11 with an intel, my CPU temperature is totally a disaster. Heading to 80+°C while gaming. I didn't upgrade any thermal pads or fans except add an NVme SSD just as same as you did. So far, switching fans looks like the best to do. I see there is someone upgrade cooler master water cooler on their Aurora. Don't know if that will help...

Man I was in a similar situation as you are. Bought 5600x + 120mm aio + dual fan 3080. I am not lying to you I bought a new case and a new MOBO to move everything out. The heating is insane in Aurora poor case design so nothing can change it if you want to play hard on this machine...

104C is unacceptable that’s hot as fuck lol . My 3080FE with gelid Extreme pads hits max 82C on the thermal junction temps. Most of the time it it’s a solid 80C when the ac is on at 70 at night this is mining getting 101Mhs 24/7 !

These cards should all be AIO because they just dump hot air into the case some have complete open case just to not thermal throttle especially 3080ti and above this is even after applying A.M cooling products.

So many bad wrong things in this video dude. You didn't even change the thermal pads on the memory chips of the pcb. You just added pads the heatsink man !!! And never stack thermal pads like u have done on the backplate and also never add thermal paste on top of old different paste brand. No surprise that there is no changes !!! 😂😂😂

Good job not understanding the issue. Some manufacturers, like Gigabyte weren't putting thermal pads on the back of the memory. They'd put a huge metal back plate, but nothing to help facilitate the transfer of heat from the memory to the plate.

This guy order the wrong size thermal pad u need 2.5 or 3mm for it to have contact, and using cheap thermal paste. U need to add the thermal pad between the backplate for the vram to transfer. U need better airflow case what’s the point if it has zero airflow?

Yeah a lot gpu model out there..but i think the best gpu is the gpu that the heatsink touching the vram too..that dell 3080, the heatsink not touching vram because of the plate...temp goes down after putting thermal paste on that plate..but im wonder what if we cut that plate into shape to allow the heatsink touching the vram, then put the thermal pad.. At the end, this will allow vram transfer the heat without the plate..vram> thermal pad>heatsink..rather than vram>thermal pad>plate>thermal paste>heatsink

PC cases are not grounded so touching the case is an ineffective means of discharging any built up static. That said, LTT did a whole video showing that static shock isnt a huge issue.

You did not actualy replace old thermal pads. You have to remove the black radiator from PCB, it houses the old thermal pads, and those needs to be removed. Follow ?v=i4ful9eaVSQ KZbin video to find out what I'm talking about. What you actually did was added additional thermal pads, leaving the old ones in.

You won't get the results you're looking for. This specific 3080 is not a FE, it's a custom PCB and cooling solution designed by Dell and not available for individual sale. The thermal pad replacement, is for the 3080 and 90 FE's. I am surprised at your temps though, that backplate has copper heat pipes on the backside of the memory chips. The GDDR6x spec says 115 is fine, STS Miner from the Nicehash discord says 105c is fine. Red Panda Mining says 95c. It's really whatever you're comfortable with, because the longevity data does not exist.
@GamerHeavenOfficial
@GamerHeavenOfficial 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I knew it was Dell's in house card, but I didn't know it was a different PCB. That's good information about the temps, thank you. Even the Nvidia customer service page says 110C is completely normal and not harmful, but I would still like to drop them lower. With my current settings I sit at about 102-106C while mining Eth at 95MH/s average, which I am pretty happy with.

I changed thermal pads on a vision 3080 and I went from mining at 60-70mh thermal throttling at tjunction temps of around 110 degrees to under 80 degrees tjunction temps at 100+mh. Your pads are too thin for the vram chips and likely weren't making contact. You need 2mm pads, this was a failed application.
