Is a budget coil shock any good? In this video, I test out the DNM RCP-2S 550lb rear coil shock from aliexpress. Link to this shock amzn.to/323RVRn Instagram / gravitycheckmtb Facebook / gravitycheckmtb

The 50mm or 51mm is referring to length of stroke not width of the bushings. Shock are typically designated by eye to eye length and length of stroke, i.e. 190mm x 50mm
@johntran16713 жыл бұрын
As a FYI Fox coil springs do fit the DNM RCP-2S perfectly since the Fox spring inner and outer diameter matches perfectly. All you have to do is get a spring that matches the amount of stroke your shock has. I had to change the spring on my DNM RCP-2S since I wasn't getting enough sag out of the 550in lbs spring it came with. I ended up changing to a 450in lb spring to achieve the amount of sag I wanted which was about 28 to 30 percent. Now it rides buttery smooth with no harsh bottom outs. The 550in lb spring was too stiff for my riding weight and bike.

Good review. Do they make a trunnion mount? I've asked a few retailers on AliExpress and Amazon with no answer in the past few months. I'm guessing probably not unfortunately, but thought you might have better luck finding out. Thx TC

Grat point. I think selecting the coil should be an option when buying it. Even no coil option if you want to use the coil of your choice.
@rider65 Жыл бұрын
30% sag?! 😄🙄 dude that is way too much sag. Not only that but I would ask what side are you running in the fork. Because if you're running 25 to 30% at the rear you need to be running 25% at the front otherwise your bike will be inbalanced. Remember load transfer has to be closed in equality not perfectly equal but close otherwise you were going to experience too much or too little Fork dive > rear squat. Ideally you want between 15% and 22% sag. Okay it is depending on the majority of Trail systems ride and possibly on weight but unless you are extremely lightweight 30% sag is far too much for optimal suspension Dynamics

You can probably make a water bottle fit by using a problem solvers brand adapter to move up the mounting position for the bottle cage. If clearance at the top of the front triangle becomes an issue for fitting the bottle use a side loader cage or a fidlock system.

I have one of these on my old haro extreme mtb. Great bike. Anyway, i bought new bushings cut to the right size from tf tuned uk, straight fit no hassle. No filing needed

You can get a fox or rockshox coil to replace the original. A coil according to your weight, and fox and rockshox are lighter. So As we say here, you would be killing two birds with one shot. And even that would be cheaper than getting a full fox or rockshox rear shock.

What's the internal width for the coil ? Thanks
@harvmoid60652 жыл бұрын
you do realise that the 50mm measurement is the stroke length of the shock, not the bushing right ? The 190 is the overall length. The bushings can differ between bikes and isnt an issue with your bike or the shock :)

None of the drawbacks are specific to this product. I would be interested to know how this performs vs a similar spec coil shock from known brands.

Most important initial setting on a COIL is SAG 👍 You have to set preload before you can make adjustments on compression. Otherwise you're not taking advantage of the travel.
@taylortuder72513 жыл бұрын
You actually can set sag on this coil, I put it on my Bronson. It adjusts the same way a dirt bike shock would, compress the coil further by spinning the ring above the coil with an appropriate spanner.

Thanks for these videos, planning to build a e- mtb and these cheaper shocks you are reviewing seems to be perfect for a budget. Fox forks would be nice ofc but have to start with something and not blow the bank at first :)
@gravitycheckmtb3 жыл бұрын
I actually ordered another one of these shocks for the eMTB build I just completed on the channel. The air shock is working ok but the added weight required you to fill the air shock to the limit. Hoping this will solve the issue.

@@gravitycheckmtb Yeah I figured a cheap coil shock would outperform a cheap airshock, im not that concerned with weight on an powerful e-bike.

For your handlebars, what have you bought now? Also, I want to buy the 160mm travel fork but many reputable sources say you should only overfork by around 20mm? I have found a 140mm fork but not sure if I should risk the. extra 20mm travel. Also what drivetrain did you go with?
@gravitycheckmtb3 жыл бұрын
I’m running some amazon choice alloy bars for $25 for the meantime. I’ve had 0 problems with running 160mm. Jumps, 10 foot drops, extremly roughy tech. Both downhill park, snowshoe, and just general rising for over 2 months and not a single issue. I would not be too concerned about it. I’m running the SRAM sx eagle 1x12 drive. It’s ok but I would gladly save the money and build my own 1x12 because the sram Drive is just Ok for the price.

Will it fit a 2018 Giant Trance 2? It’s a 140mm travel shock and these are 200mm
@CRGT6662 жыл бұрын
You have to measure the eye to eye distance of the original shock, as I can see, trance uses a 185mm eye to eye shock, and the smallest DNM I can see is a 190mm, you would have to measure if you can fit a 190mm. 140 is the tail travel, I mean the distance the rear triangle moves when it compresses, not the measure of the shock. I have a Giant Reign, and thinking about installing one, which has a 205mm eye to eye shock, but the options dnm offers are 200 and 210, I can't install 210 because the bottom link would hit the bottom bracket, and the 200mm would reduce too much the rear travel.

Do you ever do long term reviews now that you've had some of these products for a while now???
@gravitycheckmtb Жыл бұрын
Yes actually. I recently did long term review on a bike rack. I hope to cover more long term review on all the products but it can be a lot to manage. As far as the shock goes I’ve had no issues with it. I will say that I have a switch back to air shocks over coil shocks simply because the air shock has a little bit more adjustability. If you watch reviews on air shocks vs coil this is a common trend. But as far as the value, the shock is still a great by.

@CRGT6662 жыл бұрын
There's no air on coil shocks. You would need to buy a different coil that matches your body weight. And DNM only offers a 550 pounds coil, so you would need to buy a fox, rockshox or dvo coil(only the coil ) to replace the original.
