I think the use-case for coil shocks is park, shuttle, and e-bikes. They are heavier than air-shocks, and not intended for uphill / XC type of riding. Also, the springs come in different strengths, this one may be too strong for you since you are a light weight guy. This would explain why the small bump sensitivity doesn't feel great for you.

Great example of the rebound control , I have front & rear 2000lbs coil & oil shocks without the rebound adjustment on my Scooter & the front rebound just snaps back which usually happens mid air , kinda distracting & need to anticipate it every jump or can cause a bit of wobble on the landing. Thanks for the video , these look a game changer for me. 😀👍

I'd say just like everything else, coil or air is a personal preference based on rider and what they ride. I don't have issues setting up air shock but I only have 2 bikes with them so once set, leave alone.

You know after I was a soldier I was a trucker for 2.9 million + miles, like others have said I get a kick outta that radio talking back and forth when y'all show it 😁 Great review, guys! I'm old school and remember when a good old coil & oil fork or shock was the way to go unless just trying to shave weight off a bike (air forks and shocks have came a long way over the years). I agree, I think that'd definitely be a noticeable upgrade over the stock coil only shocks that comes on those (especially for more xc/less big hit style of riding), and especially at that price point. Like you said,though, a sub $100 part has it's limitations. Haven't done anything with the Trouvaille yet (need to reroute the chain in the rear derailleur, but otherwise it's ready to go) because I've been taking advantage of the hot and dry weather and riding (the Aggressor Pro) more. Spent yesterday afternoon riding some single track that I hadn't ridden in 7 or 8 years (mostly intermediate, but 1 black diamond 2 mile loop as well). After 11 months keeping it stock just to see how it'd hold up (to about a 75/25 ratio of gravel/single track riding), I'm pretty tired of it's 80mm budget coil fork beating me to death in tge rocks and roots sections, I think the next over $100 bike purchase that I'll make will be a 100-120mm air fork for the GT, and the original tire's knobs are just about worn smooth, but they've been a great gravel tire, lol (plus I've got a big box of upgrades I've been buying and haven't opened yet)...

As a heavier rider the air shock is usually better for tuning to weight. Ordering a coil spring can take a while and add extra cost to the shock. I wonder if the cheap air shock sticktion can be fixed with opening up and lubing with some slickoleum. Once again, great video , keep them coming.

Great video guys. Coil shocks are great but the spring rate isn't one size fits all. On the higher end coil shocks springs come in 25 pound increments so you can choose the spring rate that suits your body weight for sag and riding style. You will probably find with your shock there's only one spring rate which will only work with a few riders

Another great video. My take on the whole debate of air vs. coil is that it all depends on what the rider feels is a better option. Personally, I like the adjustability of air shocks but think the look of a coil is way cooler. If it were an option to use one on one of my Jekyll's I'd try one. I've been searching for the rare as hens teeth clevis mount Fox Vanilla coil for my '94 Super V but haven't found one yet.

I just upgraded from a Fox DPX2 air shock to a Marzoochi Bomber CR coil. The difference is night and day. The coil rear shock has much better small bump sensitivity and feels much plusher with large hits. The key with coil shock is getting the correct springs for your body weight and bike. Unfortunately with cheaper coil shocks you are stuck with whatever coil springs it comes with. You should try a DNM RCP 2S it has compression and rebound adjustment plus a standard Fox steel spring will fit allowing you to change to a different weight springs.

@@WOLFTICKVIDEOS a DNM RCP-2S are usually around $120.00 . Unfortunately most of your higher end coil shocks are geared more towards downhill and Enduro bikes which tend to have longer eye to eye measurements of 190mm or more. The smallest the DNM RCP-2S comes in is 190mm. So you might not be able to try a better coil shock on the Mongoose Ledge X1 because of the eye to eye measurements of the rear shock.

Nice! I heard you breathing...You got MILKED! LOL!! did ya catch any fish? Dude the ledge X1has a funky rear suspension design I run a 550lb spring on mine and actually would love to try a 500lb one. These are only 59 bucks on e-bay, I suggest playing around with it maybe try less rebound and maybe if you can get a lower LB spring for it... coil shocks are known to keep the rear down on the ground much better than a air shock and also be more active to the terrain see my latest vid I have this shock on my gravity see the terrain I drive on that's ware a coil will outshine a air shock all day long. Play around with it more I think if you get it just right for your riding spot you will find it works really good. I have to say I did notice the shock movement was active unlike the air shocks that looked like it don't react fast hence why the rear wheel loses grip and floats over stuff much more. Nice ride! and they do make a better version with a lock out too.

But you can't expect much from the really chepa stuff. Also that bike is not meant for gnarly or rough riding or heavy people. So insusp their might be some stiction issues. The coil seems so be quite supple, which is nice, a song a sits not too soft, so spring rate is important. But being able to just turn the preload ring sors not seem like a smart idea, mine has a plastic screw to hold it in place. Having a damper is a must, which this has, rebound damping is needed to keep it on the ground. Preload should be set until you don't have any play, but you can do slight adjustments, but won't be a massive difference, but coils have fatigue so eventually they will rattle so need to tighten again, but not having a screw to secure the preload ring does not look like a good idea. The nice nice thing with coil is it doe snot heat up as much, as an air shock so will perform well, be more consistent on long brutal trails, but it does not have a piggyback, but that would improve it more, as the oil would not get as hot. But coil is heavier. Air will get hot faster especially on long and rough trails. But for regular trail riding it will be fine. But kms of rough downhill trails it will be awful. The air shock in this video has more adjustments.

I think the rebound in the front and rear should match, or be very close. The sag on the front and rear should be 17/20 percent of the travel. A good setup will have the front and rear working together. If you can't get the sag set on the rear you will need a softer Spring. I did see that you did not have a lot of threads left on the shock body. Check your rebound speed Front and rear at the same time by standing on the peddles and do some small bounces Have the old man watch it for you, They should be about the same speed. I like a faster rebound.

I just found another copycat brake on aliexpress Zrace, Hope Tech caliper copy, and brake levers are a mix of Shimano or Tektro and alike, brake lever blade is Trickstuff copy. There is x2 and x4 brakes names refer to the pistons. So design wise they look great, clamp is a seperate part like Trickstuff. So broken clamp does not get the whole brake ready for the bin. But lever body does not have the machined out parts, but I don't know which material they are made off, but if they have good choice of material and tolerances are good they might be good. But I am not super how long the ymighy be on the market or when or if they will get or if they got sued.

Often it is the geometry of the rear end (the linkage and pivot locations/style) that messes with the shock. Higher-end bikes tend to have a shock that is tuned to that frame to make it work better.

I just picked up a Ledge X2. I want to swap out the rear coil shock ideally for another coil shock. How do you think the DNM Damping 2 System coil shock compares to the Exa Form 291r coil shock you tested? I'm debating between both. I know you guys don't recommend products but I'd really be interested to hear your pros and cons for both of them comparing each other. I don't think you've tested this DNM Damping 2 but I'd still love your opinion. Also have you guys considered adding an X2 to your collection or even just doing an episode where you compare the X2 and other similar bikes like X1? Thanks for your awesome videos!

I think I hit bar end plug, or a rock I am not sure it was a m rock roller went too far to the right went OTB. But today Pearl Izumi Elevate pads arrived, atleast twice as thick, many venting holes, also comfy sleeve, and the pad does not touch my leg when straight, but does when knee is bent, so very airy. I hope the twill take inoacts as good as Poc vpd2.0 DH Long, as those I could could get into gnarly crashes, hard impacts and barely feel it or not at all, apart from being jerked around and slight movement in pads, but I won't feel the impact on impacted area. 1 cm thick for the most part. So are my new Pearl Izumi pads, but they are mich softer. Poc was harder until they got warm, but still a lot harder. But I felt safe and was not afraid of crashing, I knew it would not hurt. I hope my new do that too. I fell off 1m high wall with the Poc pads and was fine, and I think I crashed a tthe same rock roller too. The Leatt FlexAir Pro are mot eof a xc and light trail pad, not for gnarly trails. I hope to fully recover.

Hiii good day. Just one question. I bought this coil shock exa form 291r 165mm eye to eye. I had this issue when I ride my bike on the trail, its making big/loud knocking sound.. the bushing where all fresh and new. But when I put my DNM air shock... there is no knocking sound. Is it maybe of the spring that makes the frame the knocking sound? Like when the spring comes back to its original position. Any idea? Thank you sir. Hoping for your reply 👌

I know this is an old video, but I hope you guys will see this and respond, because I'm thinking about purchasing one of the shocks you reviewed in this video. I had a DNM AO42AR shock, but it's leaking air bad (even worse in sub freezing temperatures), so I had to take it back. Did your DNM leak any air that was out of the normal 10-15 psi? Thanks in advance if you do read this.

@@WOLFTICKVIDEOS I wanna ask you one more question. It's a weird issue (to me anyway) I'm having with air shocks. They always tend to leak air. My first one, the ao42ar shock leaked air badly and now this 36rc is leaking air also, just not as bad as the 42ar. I rode my bike tonight for only about 20-25 minutes or so, and it was about 40 degrees and raining. After about 5 minutes or so I notice the shock felt a lot softer than how it felt when I was at home setting up my sag. I made sure I turned off the rebound and get any stiction out of the system. I get home from the bike ride, and I saw that the positive chamber lost about 10 psi, and the negative lost a whopping 40 or so psi. If the negative wasn't charged, I would expect the positive one to lose air, but it didn't lose much at all (if any in actuality because of my air pump connection). What could be causing these leaks? Thanks again guys.

I think you guys(wolf tick) haven't really used any high end shocks before, and while these shocks are leagues better then what comes on the ledge stock, these shocks are both pretty basic. Neither shocks have high speed rebound or compression. Nor do they have great options for volume spacers or progressive springs. I just think you can't compare air vs coil without having a comprehensive experience with both spring types.
@WOLFTICKVIDEOS
@WOLFTICKVIDEOS 2 жыл бұрын
Not sure if you watched until the end, but I pretty much said something very similar. We can make some comparisons, but we still need more experiences with coil shocks ranging from this $76.00 dollar one to about $140ish to be fair. We don't have much interest in the higher end stuff, that's left for our boy Evans MTB Saga😉😆
