My guess would be that the esp is just acting as a serial bridge, and the other pads you saw on the other side are for a bt module in serial mode as well. Probably fun to probe the pins and record the traffic going between the charge controller and the module, documenting the commands. I wouldn't be surprised if the rs485 port just needed a socket as well! Looks like a nice little controller for not much money, but the link is dead.

Hey. I’m charging my lifepo4 bank using a 20 amp EPEver tracer A charge controller. It’s been running for years. You will need some way to connect to it if you want to customise the settings though. MT50, WiFi, Bluetooth or a home made solution. I’ve pretty much made a video about them all! :-)

I bought this unit (140D) without WiFi (I use external arduino + raspberry pi + node red + grafana to monitor input, output and a bunch more). I live on 1 degree north latitude and I got 150+ Watt on a 2 x 100 Watt series with this solar charger. What it could not do with my system (8S LiFePo4) is re-activating the BMS after the BMS had protected the battery for low voltage - despite the claim by the manufacturer that it can. I had to jolt the BMS back to live with a power supply on mains. Looking at this video, I am happy I didn't pay extra for a WiFi option. Overall, I am happy with my solar charger, given the reasonable price.

@@AdamWelchUK Hi! Sorry I wasn't able to reply earlier! And I am sorry to tell you it is not as complicated as hacking into this unit! I have set up my grafana using this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJW5ZatvZ5qUq5I (Andreas Speiss). I have used a shunt for measuring the current by connecting it to an AD620 Voltage Amplifier and an ADS1115. The battery voltage I am measuring using an INA219 (I have a bunch lying around and I didn't want to use a voltage divider for measuring the battery voltage even though I am not using the INA219 to its full potential). I am using an arduino processing the data and sending it over UART to my raspberry pi / node-red server. In fairness, as of today I haven't connected the solar-side yet to measure, because I am waiting for a shunt to arrive. I will probably have to use a trick to be able to do that, given the fact that the solar charger unit is anode-common and the dc-dc buck modules I am using (one to power the raspberry pi + arduino) are all cathode-common. Cheers!

@McTroyd
@McTroyd 3 жыл бұрын
It would be interesting to hit those RS-485 contacts with a continuity tester and see where they trace back to. Chances are good, if they connect to a microcontroller, you'll be able to populate the passive pads from an "example" circuit in the microcontroller's datasheet. Of course, that then means tracking down compatible software, or API documentation -- you're probably better off going down the road of modifying the ESP.

Probably not. There is also the matter of the mosfets - and potentially other areas which will need to be looked at as well. Often the input voltage is capped perhaps 5% lower than the capacitor rating to be on the safe side, but not in this case.

Thanks for the review . I have been looking for a small MPPT controller . I was given some reject commercial PV panels that put out 380 watts and are 48v Voc . So that controller is good that it goes to 100v for PV but it can't handle the current I need . They rate the current as the output to the battery and not the PV current. So I would need the 40 amp model and that brings the price up to $110 . So at that price I then I need to compare to other MPPT controllers that might be a bit better. In the long run probably is smarter for me to get a USA produced Midnite or Morningstar controller that are warranted for quite a few years but of course cost more like $300 plus . Tough choice . Since the PV I have I think is basically two PV put together I might be able to cut the center at a junction box and then could use the inexpensive controller.
@LarryKapp1
@LarryKapp1 3 жыл бұрын
I will probably end up getting Victron 75 /15 . It is 75v 15 amps but the good thing is that I see that it can handle a larger PV and will limit the input current if it is too much. That is perfect since I want more PV than less so that on cloudy days I will get more amps in.

@@LarryKapp1 Hey Larry, i am thinking quite the same for me, a bigger controller would just get me loads of power at high sun and my batteries in my van would be full in like 2 hours...but that isnt necessary so with a cheaper controller i still get the most out of cloudy days.. Would not all mppt automatically limit the current if the solar power gets too high? Thinking about getting victron, too..
@LarryKapp1
@LarryKapp1 2 жыл бұрын
@@bearpoik The controller will limit the power to the batteries - cut the current back based on the Absorb and Float setpoints. If you have loads above those ( and available power) then a controller like Victron should also limit the current to the maximum output that it can handle. You would have to double check on that to be sure though. Who knows what a cheaper designed controller would do - probably smoke !
@bearpoik
@bearpoik 2 жыл бұрын
@@LarryKapp1 hmm I am just guessing but a DC-DC converter will just draw what it can and thats it..no smoke. imagine it hanging on a power supply with unlimited power. Its basically like a normal house socket..a phone charger just draws what it needs. A pwm controller however connects the solar directly to the battery so the current is not set by the controller and it has to be able to handle max power
@burkesdale

Adam, Since this has a Common positive layout is it ok to have this in a van and have this connected up with a Split charge relay so the van battery charges the house batteries as well or does the Common positive get in the way and make things worse? Or would anyone know and can help me please?

A SCR never works well. You are far better getting a battery to battery charger instead. Some B2B chargers can also work as an MPPT solar charge controller as well, though my one (a Redarc) has quite a low max input voltage, I think..

You cannot check mppt functionality when the battery voltage is at its upper limit. To check mppt use a discharged battery which will happily take any current available. You should see around 34V input when mppt is active. If it goes below 32V you have a dc-dc converter but no mppt.

@@bearpoik but my setup is for 24volt system, hence the voltage from panels are stil higher for mppt to run
@bearpoik

@@akashkumar9144 yes, the controller will have to do 80V to 24V conversion which is maybe more wasteful than 40 to 24. But i still think series is better...but I do not know it.
@CollinBaillie
@CollinBaillie 9 ай бұрын
Series would make sense if you had a long cable run from your panels to the controller. Less loss over the long distance when using higher voltage.

The identical looking Epever App is equally flaky on my iPad, in the case of a well respected supplier like Epever the badly executed app lets the product down very badly. It's almost ironic that a clone controller company would seemingly have also cloned such as crummy app as well!

You would think they could skip the app and just use an esp web page or two, to do what's required. That should be bullet proof.

These are going for a compelling price but only if you want to buy in bulk, otherwise after the cost of shipping it's so close to the EPever that you might as well just get that instead.

@@AdamWelchUK Or just bodge your own... I did that with my Tracer... have a ESP8266 with a 2.4" LCD on it... replaces the MT-50 display, and has a web page with all the info... should get back to that and put all the 'write' stuff in it... and probably swap it to an ESP32 so the modbus can run a bit better... I figured only doing read stuff was safer for starters ;) Works a treat though, and could quite easily do MQTT for dataloogging.
