FUNNY STORY - After taking a job. 3 months later I was in my office and had just printed my updated Resume (I always update it). My new boss came into my office and I noticed he saw my updated resume on my desk. (He didn't say anything). 2 days later I was called into HR. They told me I was being underpaid and should have been started at a higher wage. They gave me a retroactive 20% pay raise without even asking. I guess they loved my work and were afraid I was looking for another job and was going to leave. 🤔

Yeah, sometimes that happens. Headhunters started to contact my friend’s wife to go work at another company. Her boss found out (probably snooping her email) and gave her a raise. Both my friend and his wife were pulling in over $300k per year working at oil related companies. When the pandemic hit, the price of oil cratered and both were laid off. I also received a salary bump when I found out that I was being paid less than new college graduates. That was a long time ago.

I look for hourly wage jobs, but went to the first interview I managed to snag this year that didn't have a posted salary (or a range of hours, but I didn't think about that at the time, I was just excited to finally get an interview). I figured it was a department store (small town, admittedly) and I'd research basic pay rates from similar companies. The hiring person was pleasant and fun but I felt that pit in my stomach when they said it was $9/hr and 10-15 hrs/wk. Had I known the weekly hrs, I wouldn't have bothered applying, but that hourly was the major blow. I'd need to try and juggle 3+ jobs and hope the hours didn't overlap to make it in the same realm as affordable (if I neglected that it would be a waste of time & gas).

Had an initial interview with HR middle of Aug. Had to do IQ and math testing. Then got called for a second interview with the hiring manager at the end of Aug. Now into Sept. I was offered the job a week after the 2nd interview. They had me do a credit check, background check, and drug test. Then a week later, now into the middle of Sept. they finally said everything is good to go. Needless to say they low balled me an offer and I have to wait til Oct. to start. I have 5+ years experience in the role with many other things I can excel within the position. Basically I am taking a lower position than I left previously. I countered an offer and they will not budge. I know I will exceed their expectations. I really wanted to get this job and with all of the hoops I've been jumping, and being low balled, not to mention It's quite the commute, I really hope it's worth taking the job.

My only theory here is thst a lot of these job postings doesn't really exist anymore and there's a specific thing they don't about me. Whether I'm living in a latin american country or I stood too long without working. The last one was because I got fired due to shortage crysis and since then I wanted to rest and study new tech to find a shift in career opportunities within the tech industry, same as I was working before but with more of a back end and game development approach. Correct me if I'm wrong ... A team of industry experts will meet to decide if my expectations are in line with their conclusions. If they are not, they will pass, and not tell me why. I, on the other hand, have to guess what will make them happy, what will piss them off, and pick a number somewhere in-between. By the way, I don't have access to the mountains of data they have to base my claim on. It's not just difficult, it is impossible. I, as a single entity, have no reference to how my skill, ability, certifications, etc., stack up to the market as determined by this group. How about making me an offer that I can either accept, decline, or counter. That's what a negotiation is. Just like buying a house. The company is buying a product, and wants the best deal possible. I am selling a product, and want the best deal possible. Let's talk.

You don’t have an offer until you see an offer. Robert Half recruiters are notorious for keeping candidates on the hook after the final interview telling them that an offer is being worked on. What’s really happening is the recruiter is just hedging their bet and telling every one of the final candidates they’re about to get an offer, when the organization you interviewed with has not actually made their selection in reality.

They asked me a few more clarification questions about salary etc. They then said they will have an answer sometime tomorrow or whether or not they will move forward with the offer or if they will decide not move forward. I am so confused. And I have another offer from another company but this one pays more and it’s a manager role. Why are they doing this. I got all excited. I celebrated the weekend and now this. New job seekers read this. There is an ugly trend that's going on now. Companies are mining for experience candidates and/or with 3.5 GPA or more with ghost jobs postings of the same job positions every weeks everywhere. So everyone with no experience or lower GPA are pass up. As time goes by, your diploma lose value, then after a year or 2 when you apply for a job, companies have the nerve to ask you why you didn't get hire like there is something wrong with you, instead of knowing that their policies are wrecking the workforce. You can't get experience, if people only want experience workers or workers with like an A average GPA. So where do inexperience people get experience? Why is everyone hiring, but no one is getting hired? Why is there always 1 position open, but not multiple positions of the same type at that "big company."

Just had an recruiter screen for a senior level position 3 days ago. Didn't ask me about my skills or anything just said my resume looked great and asked if I would be ok with the hours and pay range. Then she asked me for my birthdate but not the year and said she was comfortable submitting me for the top of the range. Is that normal? She said the next step was a video interview next week with the hiring manager. Recruiter was with a placement agency filling positions for yahoo...

Just speaking as a normal person, that is very odd. Sounds like they are desperate to fill a position that someone quit on the spot. I would ask if the position is related to a new project or if it was existing prior to that posting when you get further into the interview.

Do you have any videos on companies that are really small that they don't have an apparent HR department? I recently interviewed with a company that's only 50 employees strong and my first interview was with the hiring manager (no recruiter or HR to speak of), received an unofficial offer from the hiring manager, and am waiting for an official offer letter from the COO. Is this normal for smaller companies?

I went last Friday to an interview with a temp. agency for a position at a UPS Mail sorting facility. How long should a background check take? Also I was told while I was waiting I could possibly be scheduled for a couple of days of work, but as of a week later, no offer of work and 3 times during the week I was told through text messages that my background check was still in process. What should I do? Please give any advice.

@@airthrowDBT I'm certainly leaning into my portfolio now. It seems the resume/CV is only an ATS test, as the hiring managers only care about published games. They are usually impressed with my tech test submissions, but I'm usually passed up for a candidate with a small amount of AAA experience, even if they never published their own games. That's fair, since if they value prestige over gumption, our values differ.

@@occupationalhazard I work in tech but on the HW side, I have heard MANY of the identical complaints that they all want devs with AAA experience, so that must be true. You will have to be persistent or really creative, good luck. Have you tried schmoozing and networking too?

@@airthrowDBT Yes, I regularly attend GDC, PAX West, and Unreal Fest (I work in Unreal) and network my little heart out. I'm also in overdrive on social media, especially LinkedIn. I find a lot of encouragement and made a lot of friends, but there is very little in the way of job leads that don't immediately result in a "we are moving forward with other candidates". With all the layoffs in the industry, even AA and Indie Studios are going rabid snatching up AAA talent, even when their skillset might not be optimal for their workflow. I foresee a lot of studios regretting these hires down the line. At least they are saving me the headache of boarding a sinking ship. I really want to work with people. Maybe my only route is too tough through it and build my own company to the point I can make hiring decision?

Disagree with the pedigree piece. I’ve seen quite a few startups and tech companies where coincidentally (insert sarcasm) all the employees are Harvard, Stanford, Yale, etc grads. Im almost positive this is why i was ultimately laid off, but its in the past. Every single application asks if ive had a disabability and an option says "no and ive never had one". Is it okay for me to click this? Can they find out i filed a short term disability claim? Im so nervous to put "i dont want to answer" in fear of being discriminated against. That's situational it depends where your living and how many jobs your working at a time. Blue collar workers obviously understand multiple jobs make more money. Yet white collar workers don't understand this basic mindset. Unless your contract specifically says you can't work for other people then getting another job in your field is logical.
