@@sarcasmxkate no their point was that it actually made the darkling better in the show-but he’s NOT he’s unequivocally manipulative and abusive, but having her kiss him first and him ask consent actually contradicts his character. Like Cindy said Netflix said, I get why they did and it IS super important to show consent especially in shows targeting youth, but it muddies the water and gives darklina shippers more fuel for their fire. Also at the end in the book darling kisses Alina again while she’s captured on skiff, and she takes that out. It’s so controlling but they soften his character.

It really was him knowing their age differences and how important consent is. I still also think he's a terrible person, but I think that you can still be both. Honestly my biggest issue with this episode is Alina switching sides so quickly. Like in the books it makes sense, even though she’s physically attracted to the Darkling, she still doesn’t trust him at all, even when she wants him to do her. But in the series, because she DOES instigate the relationship, her flip feels kind of out of nowhere and because the plot demands it. Like despite hearing all the scary things about Kirigan, he seems to have been the nicest to her while she’s here and clearly trusts her and she him. So why would she suddenly doubt him and run away because of Baghra’s information? In the book I guess it could be excused because Alina frankly got dragged around by the plot a lot, but here, she’s a way more active protag so it doesn’t work as well imo. Anyway, can’t wait for the next review!

A crime you cut out the scene where Genya brushed Alina's lips The white circus Alina was the best portrayal of racism this show did tbh. Jesper and the Horse boy about to play ping pong "Goddamnit, I have to entertain all these white people." Doubt her stunt double had a problem with that I really think this series could have benefited from doing a sort of animated exposition scene at the start of just explaining the political system. Think of like the ATLA opening. THEN they could also bring that back for other bits (Like Alina explaining the history) but they could also use the actual powers in the show as part of the art style to show the audience what their power system is. 7:43 - 7:46 Cindy R U Ok? As a non book reader I was so confused as hell as to Baghra's reveal. Like, if she didn't want Kirigan to have the Sun summoner then why did she choose to train Alina? Why wait until the Stag was found, when she could've told Alina right away that Kirigan can't be trusted?
