" She didn't know, and even her dad didn't know where it came from at first. And 'structural' as in what? Just part of the main frame? It was a bolt on the flap motor. It may not be 'structural', but it's a pretty damn important part...as is EVERY part on an aircraft. Every part is there for a reason, by design, and if just one comes off MIDFLIGHT, I would say that's cause for concern and immediate action. One part coming off could lead to more problems very quickly. My original point was that at that altitude and not knowing where the bolt came from, I'm making an emergency landing (not pulling the parachute as you said) ASAP. I already said she remained calm, as she should have and I give credit, but flying two minutes back to the airstrip could have been catastrophic.

It was actually the next pilot who found the perfect impression of the screw in the propellor blade. What are the chances of a bolt falling off while in the air and even seeing it. Much less catching it. That must have been a great learning tool. Your mission changed immediately...land as fast as safely possible. Great professional handling of a stressful situation. Also, could you just replace the bolt with a bolt with safety wire head of the same grade?
@johnstreet76566 ай бұрын
That would be pretty scary and she handled it like a pro.

Has someone from Boeing been left unattended near your aircraft? [ I'm not laughing ].

You were very lucky young lady, you could have had an eye injury.... Good thing you had glasses on at the time....

Just look around and you’ll probably see something by Boeing flying overhead.

How do you be so smart that you can fly that thing and not know that it didn’t come from any place else but your own craft , because it would’ve been moving a whole hell of a lot faster

I'd sure Ike to see you wear a bike / foam based helmet with a visor. Birds and now bolts.

Or a proper aviation helmet.

The aerodynamics of this plane are expressly designed in this way, since there is no electronic alerting system. Anything happening to the air vehicle will hit the pilot in the head as to alert the human on board. Many airmen have dangerously degraded or even lost A/C control checking around for something unusual, and Alina instead aviated, navigated communicated and attempted to pocket the warning system signaling device. Oh we also need to check sunglasses for scratch.

Great skills when handling your IFE (In Flight Emergency). Common, collect and great landing...

What does “common, collect” mean?
@dansalinas23226 ай бұрын
@@Ernwaldo , Sorry, I meant to say, " Calm: staying smooth under pressure and not panicking, collect: Knowing that you can handle any situation. I was a crew member aboard the E-4B in the Air Force with a few IFE's. One involving our airplane hitting a flock of snowbirds on take-off at night. Our #1 engine took most part of the damage from the 28 large bird strikes, but we were able to level off and burn off some fuel and land safely. Another event involved an inflight refueling with the E-4B and a KC-135 tanker. Once we were finished refueling, we released from the tanker and dropped free and away from the tanker. During my required inflight walk around check after air refueling. I found that the fuel manifold was leaking & vapors begin to be release. I was carrying a portable oxygen bottle, I immediately donned my oxygen mask. Notified the flight deck and began my bold face emergency procedures checklist ( which you had to know by heart). We were able to land safely and come to complete stop. From there I was able to evaluate 35 passengers to safety.

@@Ernwaldo Sorry, meant to say calm: relaxed under pressure... Collect: remembering how to fly the airplane during any situation. Alina performed perfect!

@@dansalinas2322 Gotcha! So, “Calm, cool and collected.” Makes more sense. Thanks. Yep, not exactly an IFE, but had a cotter pin on one of my toe brake mechanisms break. Had no idea until landing & attempting to make a turn-off. Almost looped into the grass. Fortunate to have had a long runway to coast until slow enough. Alina did a great job with her IFE, for sure. Thanks again. ✌🏻

one of the risks of a flying machine : a bolt here a screw there - so much to check and tighten after each flight .

A pro would do a pre flight check of the plane, dumb people do a pre flight of their GoPro ..

@@TimothyFles That's a bit harsh. Even the professional pilots don't check every nut and bolt on their aircraft. When I worked in aviation, I didn't see one pilot go to the flap motor (where this bolt came from) and check all the bolts were tightened up. They might look at the flap motor and note that it's in one piece, but unless they inspected it very closely they wouldn't notice that a bolt wasn't quite tight. Having said that, if a component I'd worked on had come apart in flight probably I would have lost my job. We had maintenance manuals for a reason, and even if we'd stripped down and rebuilt a component a zillion times before, we always checked the manual in case something had been updated or amended via an Airworthiness Directive or similar. To top it off, we had workshop inspectors to check all the work at the end of a job; and then when we fitted a component to an aircraft we checked it was all correctly assembled, tightened up, etc, anyway. So there were at least three checks before the pilot even got to see it on their aircraft.

@@vk2igWell said. Internet trolls that have no clue will always find anything negative. I tend to ignore. Glad you made a lucid, well-reasoned point to take a stand for William & Alina.
