Yes...it is the great Julius Patzak. He's most well known from his performance of the tenor part on the Das Lied von der Erde with Bruno Walter and Kathleen Ferrier. He's also the Loge on the Furtwangler RAI Ring Cycle. He was noted with an effortlessly produced, bright, clear voice with scrupulous attention to pitch and other musical details. Clearly one of the greatest musicians of the twentieth century!!

He was 67 when this was recorded, and still singing very well. It was a role which Richard Tauber sang frequently all over Germany and Austria, and was much admired by the composer.

Minor error....Patzak sings the Mime role in the Furtwangler RAI Ring. Windgassen is the Loge.

This is one of the most unjustly neglected opera in the entire repertoire. Perhaps the nearly unbearably tragic nature of the story turns people off these days, but take my word for it. Becoming acquainted with it is a true catharsis. A DVD of this production is available via several sources and the recent Vienna Volksoper revival is also available on DVD. There is a beautiful recording on EMI with Donath, Jerusalem, Hermann and Moll in the key roles and Zagrosek conducting.

I heartily agree. It is one of my Advent season essentials. The more brutal the story, the more beautiful the redemption.
