Norway Chess is a 6-player double round-robin featuring World Champion Magnus Carlsen and taking place in the Clarion Hotel Energy in Stavanger, Norway from 7-17 September. Each of the 10 rounds consists of a classical game where a win is worth 3 paoints and a loss 0. If the players draw they play an Armageddon game, where the winner earns 1.5 points and the loser 1 point. No draw offers are allowed before move 30.
The classical time control is 2 hours for all moves, with a 10-second increment per move only after move 40. For Armageddon White (the same player who had White in the classical game) has 10 minutes to Black's 7, with a 1-second increment from move 41. Black wins if the game ends in a draw. A tie for 1st place will be decided by two 3+2 blitz games followed, if necessary, by a 5 vs. 4-minute Armageddon game. Official website: norwaychess.no

Alireza played like Morphy - he sacrificed his Rook for piece activity to win. The pressure was too great for for Rapport to even castle to safety. Incredible game.

Indeed. It was very intuitive and he said that to him it seemed immediately obvious he must be better. But he needed almost an hour to work out how to turn that intuition to concrete moves to actually win it. All of this is against top 10 competition. He is climbing insanely fast and only 18 so far from his prime. At some point Magnus will decline and Alireza will ascend to the point where we may have new champion. Maybe in next 5-6 years.

I'm disappointed that Rapport didn't win, but on the other hand, he made this tournament SOOOOOOO much more interesting than any of the others I've watched in the last year and a half! So many boring draws and slight gains in other tournaments, but Rapport blew things out of the water early in this one and forced everyone to play at their best in order to try to beat him! Wonderful competition!!!

Yeah, it's unfortunate that Rapport needs to work on his mentality. I don't know if you watched any of his post-game interviews, but ever since his loss to Magnus, he's been saying he just wants to get the tournament over with and go home. What kind of attitude is that?

@@ksham. he is still young and obviously the grind of playing so many games with only one rest day was getting to him. I remember when Grischuk semi joking how he played too many tournaments one year and he was actually more disappointed than happy he had made it to another Candidates Tournament because it meant having to play yet another tournament. I think playing so bad against Magnus only to blunder at very end because of time pressure broke his fighting spirit. Chess is actually pretty physical at this level. If you aren’t in good health the grind will get to you eventually and at this level even small inaccuracies will do you in. I mean Magnus is not immune to this but I think he is more insanely competitive and obsessive than most of these guys. It’s instructive that Karjakin very reasonably pointed out that he and Nepo played worse because they didn’t have a rest day which is absolutely a big factor. But Magnus is the sort of person where after this tournament he will go home and at midnight you will find him playing blitz online again. I think Alireza is like that too. These guys are chess addicts and so for them fatigue is always factor yes and Magnus was blind to obvious move in Armageddon when he admitted he was too tired to examine all tactics of that game but in general they will never think of just wanting to go home in middle of tournament when they still have a chance to win. It shows you why Magnus is WC and why people think Alireza may be the future. Can Nepo match Magnus for 14 classical games in a row? It’s a helluva grind. He needs to be in peak physical condition to last.

@@dfchang813 sure, but I think your response is not directly related to my point at all. I'm was not talking about his play. I didn't say anything about his play, mistakes, or inaccuracies. I was talking about his mentality and attitude. The tone is all wrong. Admitting one is tired is fine; nothing wrong with it. But to go as far as "I just want to get the tournament over with and go home." 2/3 of the way in sounds like he has already given up. Even if that were true, he doesn't have to say it like that in a post-game interview. Imagine being invited into a tournament and saying "I just want to go home" to someone there. That's borderline offensive. I wouldn't invite that person again.

Interestingly, Magnus' rating at the exact same age (18 years and 3 months) was exactly 2770 except Magnus didn't hit Covid and played more tournaments than Firouzja.

Magnus didn't need Alireza to win, a draw would be enough, but even if Rapport won with black against Firo (not very likely), that still wouldn't be enough for Rapport to win the tournament, he'd only tie Magnus and then he'd have to play blitz against Magnus.

7:04 after further analysis, f6 really is the best move. But the continuation with Bxd5 is what makes his plan not working. He had to go for Kf7 or Qd7, and would have had a good advantage. g6 is not the best, but is more solid and safer. It's rather drawish. Playing for the win, that's probably why Rapport have chosen f6

If you ask me i would always think twice sacrificing a bishop or knight for a pawn or a rook for a knight. i would never consider such a sacrifice for a future gains and that's what separates us from the Top 2700 GMs. The lob term benefits of such sacrifices
