Oh wow, this is a very interesting performance - you have to be so brave in this piece and she is certainly that, as well as thoughtful. I love my Steven Isserlis / St. Louis Symphony recording from years ago, haven't heard another performance I liked half so well, but this is definitely up there. Orchestra is fantastic. ❤

This is the Chicago Symphony …

there's no other cello concerto that allows such a full encompassing voice of the cello, to be expressed in a single piece, that is also supported so wonderfully by the orchestra. to have such a true partnership in a concerto is for me surprisingly rare. barber is a genius who composed with great courage; that same courage is also required when performing. Reticence to engage this piece to its extremes often results in bland confusion and genius lost.

One of the great 20th century cello concerti, along with those of William Walton, Miklos Rozsa, and Frank Martin.

I remember learning the Rozsa's Concerto while I was still quite a young cellist (around 16)... What an exciting music !! It's rarely programmed, sadly.

I had never heard it before, either, before hearing Weilerstein perform it with the Cleveland Orchestra, under Franz Welser-Most, a couple of weeks ago. How in the world had I missed it? It is not to be missed.
