She has won 27 Grammys. More than ANY female and third most of any artist. BUT, if one adds grammy wins for Union Station and Grammys Alison won as a producer, it's not even close. She is the most honored musician OF ALL TIME. The crime is that, relatively speaking, so few people know about her brilliance. I had the opportunity to see her and Union Station at The Brady in Tulsa many years back. They were just outstanding then, and still are today.

I knew you'd get a kick out of Keith Whitley's song, and the cover by Allison. I think there is a version of her and Keith Whitley doing this as a duet, where they used Keith's voice post-humously. They did the same thing with Lorrie Morgan (his wife) and Keith Whitley after he passed away. Kind of a way to make them live on long after they die. Allison nails this. She's phenomenal and her voice is pure. Check out her version of "Ghost In This House", which was originally done by the band Shenandoah. She kills it! She's also awesome in the duet with Brad Paisley in "Whiskey Lullaby". She's well know for singing Bluegrass, but she has done a lot more, she sang with Led Zeppelin's Robert Plant and I think they did 2 albums together. Also, Union Station, the band that plays for Krauss, are world class masters of their respective instruments. Look them up, they are badass!

I love this song in general, but Alison's voice takes it to a new level for me. I believe she holds a record for winning the most Grammys(?) Country music fans are going to hate me for this, but besides her perfect voice, I like her version better because it's less "country sounding" than Mr. Whitley's rendition. Not a big country music fan myself, but there are always exceptions to every rule. I love some of Hank Williams Jr. songs because he infuses a lot of rock and blues into them. "Hotel Whiskey" and "Big Mamou" are two of my favorites of his. "Big Mamou" is like nothing you have ever heard before, I guarantee it! I'm always drawn to the unique when it comes to music.

The back story of this particular song, Keith Whitley had written the song and he died. So they [Union Station] did it as a tribute to him. At the time in 1995, she had just had a baby. They had been touring for ten years and not many people knew who they were. So this song became a big hit for them. That is when they blew up as the main act.

I don't like country, and when I worked at a coffee shop years ago this is one of the songs that I heard nearly every night for a year and a half, so needless to say I grew to hate it... BUT I can recognize that Alison Krauss is immensely talented, and as evidence I direct you to Raising Sand, an album that Krauss did with Robert Plant. Yes, the guy from Led Zeppelin, the guy who sang "Stairway to Heaven", did a blues country album with Alison Krauss. When that album was released, I wasn't working in a coffee shop anymore, I was working in a book store in an airport, and staff got to pick what played on the stereo during their shift as long as it was a CD we sold in the store, so that album got a lot of play. My favourite song is "Trampled Rose", a cover of a Tom Waits song, but the whole album is worth a listen. Here's "Trampled Rose" if you want to hear it specifically, but Plant doesn't do vocals on it so it's not a good sample of the album overall. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXnSg36Ybc2UoMk
