I grew up listening to Alistair Cooke’s Letter From America every Saturday afternoon, on Australian Broadcasting Corporation radio. Cooke’s weekly monologues were wonderful, especially when he spoke about the great and powerful people who he had known during his long life. I miss Cooke’s wit and wisdom.

I'm watching The Jewel in the Crown and every episode is introduced by Cooke. I went looking for more information about him since he seemed a rather cultured man, and I am quite surprised by how he didn't shy away from disapproving the injustices of Empire and still was moralistic and reactionary about modern society.

What is his accent? I know he is British but why does he not seem to have much of an accent at all. I was introduced to him through finding his book at a library giveaway called The American Home. Really cool to read passages of places youve traveled and see his tale on them. I always read imagining his voice with a much stronger accent lol
