Agreed, he could of had a second chance but his guilt ate him from the inside for all those years of exile. If I did the math right he was in exile for over 20+ years and constantly on the run. The blueprints and notes on the walls in Alister's hideout are said to be Kaden's notes so he's been clinging to the past the entire time
