was hoping to see some curves comparing HLD to CINE or SLOG, but that was very informative either way, thanks again Alister a true champ and full of knowledge!

Perfect info. Was shooting "no profile" and wondering whether PP10 could be better. Will now shoot HLG+709. Thanks!

Really good information (both parts) very clear and good to know. One of the best explanations so far.

Excellent explanations. Really helped me gain an insightful understanding of the technology today, including on my recently purchased Samsung HDR tv that also support HLG.

so, if I understand you correctly, HLG3 is primarily not a acquisition/recording PProfile but more a 'display/output' profile to HDR monitors. however, recently I've seen several people, modify the HLG3 settings and then applying various LUTS actually use HLG as an 'acquisition' picture profile. what are your thoughts?

Excellent overview and demonstration. Even though I'm watching on an SDR display, I could mostly understand. It is unfortunate, though, about the color (and slight brightness changes), because if HLG could perfectly get that right, people could shoot using it and both the dynamic range and color would be improved on HDR without any cost to SDR viewing.

can't tv's detect whether an incoming signal is rec 20/20 or rec 709 and adjust the way it handles the colours accordingly?

Thank you for this tutorial. This was very informational and told me exactly what I needed to know. Would grading in S-Log allow me to produce a more vibrant image than HLG creates?

Unfortunate that you don't have a link in the video description to the other HDR video he mentions in the first few seconds of the video. Excellent explanation though, really useful.

Apologies, we have now amended the description to include the link.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge, Alister! So we still have to choose between Rec709 or 2020 for this delivery format. I was hoping that HDR tech would sense which viewing device is being used, and automatically remapping the colors. I want the dynamic range of HLG, but also want accurate color. Pity that we can't have both until the world replaces all the televisions with HLG compatible sets, so the color recording mode can be left at 2020. Q: If exposed and lit correctly, is HLG reproduce colors with great accuracy? As HLG is a delivery format and not as easy to grade, I'm hoping the additional dynamic range can render colors more accurately than non Log formats.

Thank you for explaining HDR. In my own tests, I've seen better capture of blue skies in a wide-dynamic environment where the other profiles (short of LOG) lop off the top of the signal and wash out my sky. If I'm not doing heavy grading...or delivering raw footage to a client that won't be grading, would I be okay delivering HLG?
@VisualsCoUk6 жыл бұрын
I can't speak for Alister's opinion, but delivering in HLG is tricky. I wouldn't do so unless it goes for HDR exhibition. Watching HLG on a SDR TV can be painful depending on what the TV is, how it's calibrated (and most consumer TVs aren't). Hope this helps, otherwise it's easier to reach out to Alister on twitter or his website xdcam-user.com.

Alister (and VI) great video! Isn't one of the strengths of HLG is that you don't need to grade [much]. So you could use it on Broadcast or events and show the results as quickly as normal news is shown? Given the BBC was a partner for this standard, perhaps it will be their first HDR/UHD standard used for Broadcast? I know they have not said they would do that but at least it sounds plausible they might.

If you use HLG, your exposure and white balance must be spot on in-camera. There's little wiggle room. Though, there are new LUTS coming out that can convert HLG to a more Log look for easier grading in post. They seem more geared toward the Panasonic GH5, however, as its HLG profile is seemingly the only one that puts the camera in a Rec 2020 color gamut capture mode. Everything else seems to be Rec 709 friendly. The Sony FS line doesn't seem to have that limitation.

Please clear up this one point... If i shoot in HLG and the tv does not have HLG support but does have HDR10 support will the viewing experience still be as intended?
@dan_hitchman0075 жыл бұрын
It will not look as intended. You will only get the SDR mode on your TV. In your situation, it would be better to shoot in Log and expose and grade for a PQ HDR format. Make sure your output setting in your NLE is correct, so the metadata flag is telling HDR displays the signal is HDR10.

Alistair, can I convert my Sony A7III HLG content to HDR10 content for display on an HDR10(non HLG) projector?
@lucabrigantimediaproductions7 жыл бұрын
Hi Alistair.. The shogun inferno came out with 8.4 firmware update which introduces the HLG color profile in the sony inputs ATOM HDR menu. My fs5 does have raw upgrade but i am experiencing the HLG profile on the Atomos ATOM HDR menu is not available through SDI Raw but only through HDMI. It just disappears once I connect the camera through SDI. How can I monitor my camera if I am recording Raw outside of it in a HLG pp? I do see only slogs gammas into the recorder but i can output from it an HLGbt2100 in the HDR OUT. Is this normal in your opinion or it's just an Atomos bug I'm dealing with? Thanks a lot Luca

Great explanation. HLG does not seem useful to me. You have to accept what comes out of the camera, will not work for me! No grading? Really??
@petrub275 жыл бұрын
why grading if you are using a hdr monitor bt2020? no need that's the whole advantage of hlg, no need for grading with the correct display output if you want to grade and do not have a hdr monitor, then do not record in hlg!
@waynedupuis1235 жыл бұрын
@@petrub27 Most people shoot/edit/produce video for others to watch, not push through a local monitor. HLG is perfectly gradable when you resolve it to a rec709 timeline using something like FCPX custom lut plugin; which has a feature allowing rec2020 input rec709 output; within the plugin.
@boghav7 жыл бұрын
I call BS on this entire line of process and thinking. The picture differences are minimal at best, and an expert in Resolve could easily make the differences noted. Solid workflow techniques beats marketing by camera and TV manufacturers. Current HDR visuals are nothing more than cranking the Sat and crushing the Black. It's a personal preference of image representation, nothing more. Surely an interim step to achieving truly expanded dynamic range, which will come in the future as chipsets and monitor technology actually improves.
