Can an artist fall off if he never truly took off?? That’s a question of the ages and the rap duo we are discussing today should give you; if not an answer to that question; then at least a better understanding of the concept. Camp Lo is a rap duo composed of Geechi Suede and Sonny Cheeba; most well known for their debut album hits Luchini AKA This Is It and Coolie High.

“Ahead of their time…” I hear you on that but I have to disagree. If Camp Lo would’ve dropped in the era right before gangster rap they would’ve gained more traction. If they would’ve dropped in the era with the Brand Nubians, Jungle Brothers, X Clan, Flava Unit, etc. Gangster rap killed everything that wasn’t gangster.

@@antdel33 I can respect that perspective or point of view…and actually can see what you’re saying. But honestly I’m biased lol as their one of my favorite groups ever. But again great perspective brother.

Camp Lo's music is a small market segment of listeners which is perfectly fine. We have to remember when it comes to music and hip hop specifically every artist is not going to be a megastar for their music to be meaningful to the genre or listeners. Camp Lo's music and influence play a significant part in hip-hop and should be celebrated. Great video Ali!

I've been a fan since almost the beginning, and over the years I have discovered a couple things about Camp Lo. They either don't know how or don't have any desire to be "successful". There is one part of me that thinks they very much enjoy being underground, because they themselves are huge fans of true Hip-hop. It seems to me that they make music more for themselves than for the public. Now on the other hand sometimes I think they just don't know how to market themselves. They could very easily build up a cult following again and release limited edition vinyl and cassettes as well as some well designed merch on a site like Bandcamp. I guarantee they would make money. But that would require them to commit to releasing music on a semi regular basis. But they just haven't been in that mode for the last few years. I keep holding out hope that they will come together again and really work hard on a new album. I miss that heist music.

I'mma say this I love this video but I'm going to be honest camp lo was Outkast competition for a brief second Outkast had Laface behind them a machine that's exactly what camp lo needed. Camp needed a major label that would have pushed them very very strong. A major label would not allow them to leave for five years camp lo would have been a real good act for Elektra records for numerous reason. Only if we could have got an outkast and Camp lo track or Camp and red and Method Man track. Camp lo flow and style would allow them to do tracks with 8Ball and MJG to be honest there limits was not push in the prime of their career.

I remember waiting for a bus at 34th Street,(Manhattan, N.Y.). It was September of 96 and I was on my way to Job Corps,(Glenmont, Albany). A guy came up to me with a white cassette tape. It was a promotional tape with one song on each side. I listened to that tape the whole entire ride and put many on to them up there. I had the biggest crush on Sony Cheeba. Those were the days!!!!😇🙏❤️👍🤗

Also you forgot to mention their Japan EP “Short Eyes” which a crazy dope song called “Sunkiss”. Their single “Disco-Tec” from DJ Honda album. They was on a record label Loud/Simulated around 2001. The label dropped a compilation album which featured 2 songs from Camp Lo. On the same label they dropped a single Trouble Man on the A side and Cookers on the B side You forgot Suede had a project with a producer called Apple juice kid. Under the name FreeBass 808. You forgot their appearance on people’s albums through the years. One being a Rick Ross project Last thing, Sonny Cheeba has a BIG HIT with The Avalanches that is featured in commercials worldwide. I don’t play with my favorite rap group dawg. But I would say the reason they never blew up is because of the hot lost in the shuffle of Profile merged with Arista. They really played into the 70s style, heavy NY Slang and complex lyrics. If with all of that Luchini is timeless and always resurfaces

Back in 1995 me n a couple of my boys had a group called the BodySnatchers. We were in my backyard (Willingboro,NJ) smoking weed and freestyling while my boy beatboxed. My sister and her friends were inside the house. This brother named Snoopy who was new around the way came through with his cousin and his boy to see my sister’s friends. I didn’t realize at first but his cousin and his boy were Camp Lo. Luccini had just came out a little while ago so I didn’t recognize them immediately but I wasn’t selfish so I invited them outback to smoke with us. My boy Wise who was beatboxin was the one who recognized it was them first and got them to start spittin with the rest of us. They did and it was a ill freestyle session. My high point was when I was going in for a minute and my boy E told the bul-SunnyChiba to jump back and he said “Nah.. Ya man’s is blackin out. I ain’t following that “ and dapped me hard as hell n said “you nice wit it B.” No cap, I’ll always remember that and it meant more to me over the years because Luccini is a HipHop classic.

I met Geechi Suede back in 1995. I took a job at Wendy's Pelham Manor as a dare from a friend who also took the job for fun. Geechi Suede and I did not really get along. He used to try to boss me around as he did not know I could easily get a better job at the drop of a dime. He was close with a dude he called his brother named Rudolph. One day I overheard him talking about a show they were going to do. I approached him like "You rhyme?" I then invited him to a freestyle battle. I won the battle although I cheated a little. Geechi Suede (Walter) had a different kind of style that I never heard before. It was not the usual aggressive hard rap style. Camp Lo came out before their time by about a year or two. Either that or they refused to sell their souls.
